-tbh, this season really picked up the slack of where the other seasons where lacking. if this show was like this for all 5 seasons, i'd recomend this show in a heartbeat

SPOILERS:

so if i where to give my big big gripes about this show, it's the fact that our protagonist bends back to the whim of traditional society for literaly nonsensical reasons, every godamned season

season 2: you could literally marry the in universe equivalent of elon musk and do whatever the hell you want, but, you refuse because of the fact that the guy doesn't want to have a family, strange but fine, you do you

season 3: become an actually popular idol, where you can leave your shitty office job and get a chance to live your dream. (this one also gets a pass because of the knife scene)

season 4: hire back your (explicitly written) chauvinist boss into your job you got off of another one of your windfalls, because it's soooooo sad that the dick who's been putting you down constantly because of your gender got layed off from the company

(side note: the narative gives WAAYYYYY too much fucking credit / leniance to this literal PIG who demeans and harasses women every scene he's in. yuck. )

season 5: literally have the chance to become a fucking senator for an entire governmental district. nop, i just like my tradtionally shit office job too much

actual fucking stockholm syndrome dude.

10 Ajin
i really do like the top MAL review for this show: "the batman arkam knight of anime"

so the elephant in the room, the 3D is not great compared to a lot of other anime that blow 3D out of the water, but compared to what i've seen from stuff like Berserk 2016, the best I can say is the 3D here is functional. Like it literally does the bare standard it needs to to not look completely and utterly shit.

outside of that, honestly the show reminds me a lot of tokyo ghoul, and if you're looking for a show like that with the same vibe, watch it first, then come back this if you can bother to watch through the series, nw if not tho, this very much is a skippable show.

i hold this show in a pretty high regard

the premise is a very apt one, to hold the narative demands of a 50 episode anime

SPOILERS:

the only thing that was weird with the ending, i wished the final scene where they finally kill off the teacher could have had more stakes, but also i kind of get the feeling that it was written to be more of an emotional endpost, so I can understand how it was written in that vain too

i'm gonna be honest, the only reason young kid me decided to watch this is because it was on toonami, and bryce papenbrook (kirito's ENG VA) also voiced the protaginist in this

is it good?

i'll be honest you could probably waste a couple of days on something better but it's not the worst shonen you could watch per-say

spoilers?

it's also a little funny, the magic system in this show revolves around memorizing bible verses to exorcise demons, and it's kind of funny that since one of the protagonists doesn't know the correct verse to exorcise a demon, mf literally reads the bible from the begining for +6hrs. while his friends fight the demon to find the right verse

20 Blue Period
so i'm very mixed on this show.

i'll say out the gate that I really am not a big fan of organized art, so take this bias when i talk about my experience with the show but

i mean coming from 'murica where art school is kind of the unofficial post secondry that everyone likes to clown on, watching teenagers compete to enter an art school, feels very goofy to me

so that aside, i really often felt like the show tries to apply the formula of something like food wars, where the chef struggles and succeeds to make a dish and learns in real time. and with the actual art making scenes, it becomes very hit or miss.

So where food wars would write something like: " i need to add some paprika to this chicken to create the missing flavor ", and I'd be like yeah ok i get it, Blue Period would write something like: " i need to add more texture to this composition to capture the essence of my creation ", and i'm just left honestly kind of confused.

And mabye the crux of why this is an issue for me, is I really don't want to "get" art, in the way that the traditional organized art sphere makes you feel bad for not doing.

What i really like though while i was watching it, is unlike something like a food wars, where literally half of your characters are just cutout troupes, the characters written here i really like, and they feel very human.

I say, give it the standard 3 episode go through, if you like it it's short and sweet, so go for it.

also OP is an actual banger, i really REALLY enjoy it!

33 Chikyuugai Shounen Shoujo
not a bad 6ep. romp. tbh felt like this was aimed towards younger teens, but for the 6 episode run time i was able to vibe with it.

-on that note, if you're looking for a great anime to put on for some of your younger relatives / kids, this is a great one to have em watch

oh before i forget, i actally made a long ass review for this:

So recently I've been trying to burn through most of Netflix's anime catalog, half because I'm slightly worried Netflix is going to shit pretty soon, but more importantly Netflix has greenlit some really interesting anime projects in the last decade, and it's always a joy to see what they greenlight

Case and point, on my queue pops up this show, the orbital children, I watch the mini clip, and I think it could be interesting. Glad I stuck around.

For a bit of a preface, this miniseries is a young adult 6 episode series whose dialogue and presentation felt more grounded for a preteen audience. This didn't affect my viewing experience by much, outside of a few characters/scenes, but I only mention as such to ground your expectations before hand. Likewise, if you have any relatives/younger folks that you'd like to share an anime with, I would 100% rec this as supposed to the prototypical "just watch studio ghibli"

The show itself is fairly short, and at least from my perspective, should be watched as a film, as the full air time goes a little under ~3hrs. The option is there though to block it out if the show just isn't moving you.
Past that, speaking of the story itself, the best way I can describe this show, is it falls into the "venture down into the dark deep unknown" type of show. Only corollary that comes to mind for me would be Made In Abyss, and also in a similar vein The Promised Neverland. (additionally, it also reminds me of this anime I watched when I was a super young lad https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children_Who_Chase_Lost_Voices)

The primary premise of the show revolves around children escaping a collapsing futuristic tourist space station, and this is the part I appreciated the most, the action was well paced, and the environments where really interesting to see implemented into the escape

However where the show mostly lost me, was the other premise, understanding importance behind the AI that built the space station.

to give credit where credit is due, the show sets a fairly good baseline, and gives a rough explanation to the importance of the AI in the world they've introduced

however as the show progresses, because the limits of what the AI can actually can ever do are never established

this eventually leads me to become mentally checked out, where the characters are like "oh no the AI can't hack the mainframe" whilst the AI was precisely able to do that and way more in the last episode

oh yeah that and a lot of techno-babble, with not a lot of actual science backing it up, the use the word quantum so much with it meaning nothing, but I suppose that's just the sci-fi norm idk lol

spoilers if interested in watching

The ending kind of suffers from EVA-itus, where the main protaganist has a communion with a higher power the ai and while I suppose there was a deep and heartfelt message in there somewhere, the film throws so many ideas out of nowhere that the end message at least for me was kind of lost, the director knows this and from what I've read he intends to make a directors cut if he ever got the go ahead, so that would be well apreciated

Animation wise, if you've heard of the show Den-noh-coil (I've heard of it but haven't watched it), this has the same director, which is making me intrested in watching his original work. Here, animation is incredibly smooth, which is especially nice for complex motion like this with zero gravity (bonus props, blender was used in the production for storyboarding, major W!)

going with the perks of being a mini film, this movie gets the pleasure of having a 40 track orchestral soundtrack which is incredibly nice!

Overall:
by no means is this a revolutionary series, but the premise alone and the artistry behind it make it an ok watch, especially for a 3hr runtime
like I said before this movie would be a great watch with someone who's younger like a preteen, and is starting to get a deeper taste in media, so definitely watch it with em if you can

since this story isn't tied to the actual game, except for the setting, i think it does a damn well job telling a story in a self contained medium

it's also very interesting to see characters die as fast as something like akame ga kill

this show could have followed the very established archetype where david joins the crew and they go on wacky little adventures untill about ep. 10 /11 when the main overarching plot tells them to get back to finishing the anime

40 Death Note
aight, this one's a bit of a harder one to review since i actually watched about a third of the show back when i was first getting into anime, but never finished it till now

so in terms of this anime, it seems like the first half is the part that everyone likes, but after the first half people get split down the middle from folks who are into it and those who aren't

i'll be honest, i think the second half is just as good as the first, and overall, finishing the entire show I don't see why some folks get kinda tilted over the second half

like overall, without even saying much, this is fortunately one of those anime where if you can watch mabye like the first 3-5 episodes and get into it, you're pretty much golden, the story's very consistent and intresting

SPOILERS BELOW:

major part i did NOT like about the narative, this might be a bit of a bias since the 1/3 i skipped watching probably explains this but, there are waaaaaaaaaaay too many rules that the death note has that aren't very intutive or easy to understand, and the fact that for like a good part of the show, there are 2 of them floating around only makes this even more confusing

now that being said, when a rule is relevant, they do explain what rules of the death note are actually being used pretty well, so i can't complain on that part, but it does kind of take me out of the actual, solving the mystery part of the anime, so not the worst issue i guess

other than that, like only major thing that was a major dislike

first OP fuckin banger man, it's iconic for a reason

second OP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNSmPmcgBho

just honestly kind of cringe, like the lyrics, especially the end bit just remind me of a "it's not a phase mom" tryhard limp biskit song

so if people are bashing the 2nd half, mabye it's because they have to sit through this every episode.

42 Dimension W
SPOILERS BELOW:

so i watched the first few episodes for this on toonami back in the day, i'm gonna be honest in terms of sci-fi this show tries it's best to introduce a pretty cool concept (an alternate unlimited source of energy from an unknown world - Dimension W) and throw it into a scifi world

and don't get me wrong they did that in spades and made a very cool futuristic society

but past that, the thing that gets me is they don't do their homework and the further exploration *behind* the alternate energy source (Dimension W) falls flat mainly because:

-the idea behind how characters interact with it is only explained abstractly at best

-when a crucial element about the source is a big focus in the story, i'm kind of left waiting for the story to technobable up an explanation up for what (Dimension W) is doing, because to me, this location to me is pretty much the shadow realm from yughioh, becuase they both equally make just about as much sense

if you are intrested in a cool scifi action anime, and you honestly don't mind keeping your brain on autopilot for the plot you can still get some enjoyment from the show

62 Fullmetal Alchemist
i feel like this is a classic for the y2k kids, i could argue if you wanted to relive some nostlagia (or if you weren't born then, watching it and prending you HAVE nostlagia for it)

i would HIGHLY recomend just watching brotherhood to behonest for afformentioned reasons below

(if you do decide to watch this version though, you can watch the first 2 filler episodes but NOT the third for reasons i ALSO get into below)

SPOILERS:

so after reading the diffrences between the OG and brotherhood, i can REALLY understand my gripes with the OG anime

so if comicbookreivews dot com is telling it right, the main diffrence in where the stories split is right after the death of major hughes

... and *that* explains why the pacing for the original story just felt so damn... off

so don't get me wrong, from that point to the end they do get around to telling an intresting story, but i because relevant plot points are so disjointed in this adaptation it just makes you feel like you're licking the edges of the yoghurt cup for the real essence of the story

like mabye for the worst example

there's an entire episode where whenry learns from some ishbalans that her parents where killed by roy mustang

oh wow that's horrible! i bet in the following episode if she's going back to central she'd at least get a scene where she fuckin talks to mustang

this anime: nope. we're gonna make the next episode after this a *filler* episode where mustang's troops are skawued of a gwhost ( despite the fact that like a good number of them have actually commited warcrimes)

like the guy who is being framed as this untrust worthy person... no he probably still isn't trustworthy but we don't have time to actually write more of the plot, just watch this filler episode and remember that murdering parents thing when the plot needs to adress that later

i feel like some how somewhere there's a directors cut which sows together the pacing togher much better

- TV
51
63 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
binged waaaaaaaaaay too much of this show. here's some food for thought

SPOILERS (more or less...) down below:

so overall, this readaptation is MUCH better than the original adaptation, predominantly because it's actually based on the original story from the manga

like i cannot stress enough how much better this story flows when story elements dont just need to be made the fuck up on the fly for this story

mind you, change wise the adaptations have some good changes, but they also do have some changes that to me at least could have been better, i'll run through the ones of note to me:

GOOD CHANGES:

- they where able to condense and restructure all of the really long poorly paced parts of the first show, and condense them into about ~20 or so episodes which is a MAJOR improvement from the first show (kind of like the directors cut i was mentioning for FMA)

- scar feels much more like a significant menance in this show. he doesn't just kind of forget that he's touring a contry which commited genocide against his people, like in the original. as well the story doesn't bend backward enough this time around to give him his redemption arc. it's earned, since in the end, it's scar who eventually comes to the conclusion that he'd rather rebuild the relations to his nation then continue on an endless cycle of violence

- the actual motivation behind the villans this time feels a *smidge* more belivable than "hey we need to rely on the skills of this 14 year old kid to do what we want" (there are still some holes with this plot tbh, i'll prolly get into that later)

- while Hohenheim wasn't perfect in this story, his writing into the plot was pretty well done compared to like the two seconds he shows up in the orignal show

- for the baseline anywho, the new regions / characters did add an enjoyable dimension for the plot

- greed got a very cool plotline! while we're also on that note the "homunculi can be infused in humans" idea was a REALLY cool concept that i wish they adressed more

CHANGES THAT I DIDN'T LIKE AS MUCH

- so while I don't exactly like how the hommunculus where written in the first adapt, since they really lacked crucial elements of motivation, the one element i REALLY liked about them was their one *crucial* weakness - the only thing that can kill them is remenants of the body that they where transmuted from. while i understand that they wanted to go with the homunculi as children thing first and foremost, the reason why liked this one and only weakness element more, is in this adapt, it's really kind of arbritrary when a homunculus is in danger of dying. like the flame alchemist can down TWO homunclui, just by shooting his flamethrower arms enough? what makes him so special? by that logic why didn't he just corner the fuher in a room like the orignal and burn him to ash?

- while the other nations element is REALLY COOL the story really kind of missed a BIG opportunity to i don't know *visit them?* like for the duration of the show xing is mentioned, and the stakes of the two seperate clans depend on this emperor guy. do we ever meet him? nope.

- also for the new baddie's big plan, like how hard would it have been to get 5 sacrifices? like there are so many state alchemists in the capital, and if they just forced mustang to go through the gate, like how TF wheren't you able to do that, well i don't know, TWENTY FUCKING YEARS AGO?

i'll be honest, i'd still recomend this show to anyone intrested in premise, it's still pretty good for all of it's kind of annoying plot holes

SPOILERS BELOW:

honestly kind of an intresting show, piqued my intrest more than I thought it was gonna at first

i think the setup is pretty good, it's been a while since I completed it, but I think the pacing got a little weird halfway through after it was revealed that there actually wasn't any point in collecting coins, I thought they where gonna keep that arc going for a bit more, it served the plot well...

another weird thing to me is how easily both protags are to start murderin, I mean I understand why, it's a core consequence of the envirmoment that the show wants to produce

...but it's also kind of weird, that very rarely do any of the characters really pontificate on why they had to murder outside of a generic "i know this is wrong but this has to be done" type schpeal, i could be misreading here too

gonna be honest for *me* i would love getting a second season to finish this anime, but i honestly don't know if that's in the cards unfortunately

if you're new to anime / haven't watched a lot of shounen type anime e.g: "naruto, one piece, bleach, ect..."

if you're looking for a long story experience like one piece but don't want to spend literal years finishing the show, this is *definitely* the show for you

overall, the show respects your time, and outside i think ONE arc (this is debatable), the pacing is insanely on key

i enjoyed spending my time with this anime, definitely a slice of life type fair which I can enjoy

don't do DnD whatsoever, but to me, it feels like this honestly could just be the campaign with the prompt:

"one player has been granted FUCK YOU levels of power, but the catch is he can't be conscious of his actual power level, letting the fantasy story actually work somehow?"

do also enjoy the very *very* spesific nodding to SEGA properties, very cool to see it involved into the story instead of just a small easter egg

88 Kanojo, Okarishimasu
i could get into this show, but i'll be honest the premise kind of does most of the explaining for why i'm not really into it

"college shut in rents girlfriends from girlfriend rental service"

so like I was hoping idk that over the course of this anime, our protaginist begins to gain back his interpersonal communication skills with the wacky hijinks that renting a girlfriend ensues

...and ideally the anime tries to do this, and we could be done after 12 episodes if the story doesn't constantly try and "will they won't they" with the main rental girl.

why enamor this? there is like not that much of an actual connection between the 2 after episode 12 stops, and let's say for the sake of argument these two can even hitch up at some discernable ending. what's the point, that just doesn't even seem like that great of a union, even for unrealitic anime standards.

not all is lost, watching the english dub Alex Lee dubbed the protaginist and he definitely made the show a bit more enjoyable: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYIxkNZJfcs)

i gotta face the mirror here, i might watch the second season at some unfortunate day in the future, coping and seething that this gets any better but idk, if what i'm describing here doesn't sound that appealing, no need to give it a watch friend

SPOILERS BELOW

definitely one of the better watches of 2022, I really do like how the plot definitely likes to trick you after a couple episodes in

i think the most pressing juxaposition I can probably say off the bat is the pretty *noticable* character design

so yeah you can kind of play it off as a "lol author's a lolicon! XD" moment but to me at least it suits the narrative

i mean with this example idk how many of yalls i'm gonna reach but it's like having one of these litle innocent figurines (https://www.amazon.com/Precious-Moments-162011-Porcelain-Figurine/dp/B01KI2ON8Y/) face inhuman horrors beyond comprehension, to me at least i cannot explain how that fuckin contrast just *works*

aight, very charged opinions on the ending here but i'll lay my thoughts here for now and come back later too

SPOILERS... obviously

so I could maybe be wrong on this, but I feel mainly that the point of contention for the ending here as a whole predominantly hedge on Eren Yager, and how his plot got resolved from start to finish

i'm gonna be honest, i could maybe see some virtue in trying to connect future eren to past eren... amazing work on keeping a continuity like that btw

but to me at least, the fact that there's even that like future/past thing that "decides" some of his actions feels kind of like a really pointless obfuscation, like I was geninely intrested in what really was the whole point of the yagerist revolt, betraying everyone and everything in the end...

but then just to have it be revealed in the end when in the dream sequence that it's just a matter of: "oh im sowwy there was nothing i could dooooo the future was already written, i couldn't change it :(" is really annoying because it just feels like a copout

-like borderline evangelion obfuscation shit

in total the future/past already written thing doesn't bother me a lot, because otherwise the entire narative was carried so damn well that ima be frank like literally no other anime for a *while* will be able to top

definitely something to keep in mind, a masterpiece of an anime like this definitively is something that I only think I'm gonna see mabye like 1 or 2 more times in my life time

like I'm just thinking in total, this was a {decade+} of time, and a small nation's worth of animators to get a fuckin masterpiece like this to completion, really makes me hopeful that when the time comes again i can see another one of the these literal "titans" from start to finish again

there isn't an un-edited version of this scene i could find but this does the same vain in explaining it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErfvKCHz3ls

i mean from the limited stuff i know on reki kawihara, this is kind of his thing, there's a "rape" scene every season, but like what the actual fuck? there is the unfortunate rule that fan service just kind of exists in this medium, but shit like this that you do constantly breaks that fucking line into the extreme.

reki. you are part of the problem.

outside of that bullshit. yeah i mean when i did watch it, it was kind of an intresting start, like an at least intresting way to redefine the "trapped in a VR world" idea, by having our OP have to progress in an MMO with AI players, but boy if you thought that was gonna go anywhere, you can just go fuck yourself i guess

POSTWATCH:
-aight, so i'm not gonna say that this show is bad by any means but here are the two things i'll throw before you give it a watch:

i think the biggest complaint that i think everyone can throw at this, is that the scope of the writing was not managed very well. this feels like the kind of show that was written to have 2/3 seasons, executed on that for the first half of episodes, THEN realised oh fuck! we only have one season and about 80% of our deeper end plot is unexplained, and the rest of the anime is built on fixing that. some real OG eva shit right here

also, in terms of the story itself, i could apreciate what it was trying to do, but after watching this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPiN6hQ2asI&pp=ygUTd29uZGVyIGVnZyBwcmlvcml0eQ%3D%3D) , and knowing what the director has done in the past, i can definitely see the critisms it gets wholesale

After watching:

SPOILERS... of course.

-ok so after binging like 9 episodes, i'm not gonna say it's like an "expose" in total for idol culture but i'm also not gonna say that the show doesn't really hit hard in some places. i currently understand it like this:

this show alternates between two parts:

Part A - "i wanna be an idol group, let's have a fun cute Bocchi the Rock/K-On adventure"

Part B - "i need to resolve this persistant freudian complex that my greatest love intrest is/was now my mom? while also learning how the japanese entertainment industry is actual hell"

170 Code Geass: Dakkan no Rozé
so i'm gonna be honest, unless for some weird reason you're REALLY into all of the world building that they've done for the extended reboot code geass, honestly this isn't worth your time

spoilers? if you really care? it's not ruining much...

so like verbatim, the show in terms of the plot setup is almost verbatim similar to the original season of code geass, this time NEO-britania takes over japan (*again?*), and this time blonde lelouche needs to reclaim japan. again.

before going into to much else, let me resolve this hang up

personally i think that is actually really really weeeeeird, since like in this time line, the "britanians" and also the "japanese" who used to live in the old oppressive times don't seem to really seem to care that the exact same fucking thing literally happened 20 years ago????

like mabye there's a factor to this i don't know since i honestly didn't feel like watching the recap movies to get like the 5 bits of alternate lore that this world has but still... like this is a pretty significant. no?

i'll be honest they at least did a decent job writing out the MC for this show, there's kind of an intresting plot going on with the fact that blonde lelouche is actually one of the twin daugters of the former emperor, so there's one who's this puppet ruler (that goes nowhere btw) and the actual one who's the MC

like i could go even more into it but honestly being real here, i'll put it like this

if you gave sukuku (lelouche's brother) the geass and made him swithc role of lelouche in the original show, this entire franchise would lose it's ommph factor, since the entire point of the show is that while his actions from some outset may serve a tenious moral good, by no means is lelouche a decent moral human being. this is the key formula here!

this is a show where they gave sukuku the geass. it's pretty close to just generic shonen mecha action now.

gonna be real with yalls - like i can understand the fact that you guys are really into this show but like by the actual time i would hypothetically get "caught up" with this, could actually like no joke here literally be time i could use to get a masters degree or smth

if the one piece is real or not i literally don't care much, and i plan to stay ignorant, thank you very much.

177 Oooku
aight insanely cool premise here, and the first 50 minute "episode" was really cool to see

...

but then from there, they kind of turn it into a courtesan drama, where the only stuff the plot cares about is who's taking the throne, and don't get me wrong i think the court drama part is intresting, but i'm honestly more interested in looking at society as a whole being affected by this "reverse patriarchy" like in the first episode, because after a while the court drama really starts to feel like it could just be like 2 or 3 flashbacks instead of 30 minute episodes. the thing is too, we know the kingdom survives, so my suspension of disbelief is already destroyed

also TW, SA:

there was a pretty significant instance of rape in the show that at least from what I can remember I wish was handled better. idk, it was not very nice to sit through

178 Romantic Killer
from what i remember of this show, the premise while i thought it was kind of intresting just was not really that great of a hook for me in execution

also this show just kind of takes a fine gander over the fact that ace / aro folks exist ?????????

like don't let that little wizard spec thing fool you otherwise, if you ain't intrested in guys gals or any other pals, you're good :)

ok i got through the first season, watched a smidge of the second and didn't really have much steam after what. not a bad show by any means, just don't really feel like having to sit thru a 20+ eps. tournament arc

was interested in this because of directors work on the orbital children, didn't end up liking that one as much, but reviews told me this series would be much more worthy of a watch, as well as carry the themes from that other show, hoping it lives up to that
