Gintama'

Gintama is by all accounts a horrible shounen.

Gintama is plagued by several flaws that have existed ever since the beginning of the long running Anime. The world building and setting are nonsensical, the fight scenes and power scaling are off balance depending on whether or not it suits the script, there are too many unnecessary flashbacks, and the story hits the most cliche shounen anime beats. The amount of genre cliches that Gintama uses go beyond parody level. Whether that be the "friendship saves the day" cliche or the "you hurt my friend, now I'm angry and powerful" cliche or a myriad of other shounen ... troupes, you can be rest assured that Gintama will not only use the troupe, but beat it into the ground repeatedly. It's almost laughable how bad Gintama is these regards.

And yet despite all of that it's steadily growing to be one of my favorite Anime's.

At all times I am well aware of all the above mentioned flaws and how they should annoy me to no end and pull me out of the experience, and yet that never has happened once. I've tried and tried to rationalize why this is the case, why such a glaringly flawed show is able to entice me over and over again. I eventually came to the conclusion that, as cliched as this sounds, Gintama just has more heart than any other anime I've seen. This feeling stems from the shows characters, which far and away is the best cast of characters I've ever seen. The wide range of characters with diverse backstories, personalities, and funny gimmicks is astounding, and more so when I think back on how good they all are and how well they play off each other. When I look back in my memory to other anime's with large casts of characters I simply can't think of one nearly as well done as Gintama. Other anime's that I love like Mob Psycho 100, Hunter X Hunter, or Gurren Lagann all have great characters and certain interpersonal relationships that I think are on par with the ones in Gintama, but none of those reach quite the same level of Gintama. Also the show has hands down the best representation of female characters in media, but that's another discussion.

I've avoided talking about the comedy aspect of Gintama so far, and it's because there's not much to say about it other than it's one of the funniest shows you will ever watch. The way Gintama constructs long form jokes that snowball into more and more jokes and scenarios is unparalleled, in anime or in other medians. This much of the show is a gimme, but its the fact that beyond the comedy aspect of the show it's still got gripping action, romance, and drama even though writing wise those aspects of the anime aren't anything special. Because of how strong the characters are no matter the setting, fights, or cliched story beats they find themselves in, I follow them there in full attention and adoration. That's why Gintama is able to plow through any and all of its downsides, it's because it simply has the heart (samurai heart that is) to back it up.

In conclusion, watch Gintama. It's heavily flawed, but there isn't anything else like it. It'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry, and it'll warm your heart with the most lovable cast of goofballs that you'll ever see. Eventually this journey will be over for me, and when I reach that ending I'm sure it'll hurt to know that I won't see anymore adventures from the Odd Jobs gang, but I hope to take solace in the fact that I experienced a truly unique and great piece of media.

When you first read the main story of it you may think it's an ordinary boring series of three guys living some adventures together .but actually it's not full of that normal nichijou (daily life) of most of this kind of anime's characters , It's actually full of surprising events . Even if some of its episodes are repeated but they got their own trait.

Including internal music , openings and endings
It's great !
It's suitable for this kind of anime.
... It makes you got excited when you watch the pivotal moments.

Characters :
The best thing that makes Gintama special is the characters.
Every single character in the series has his/her own unique personality . Even if he/she is not a main character.
Other thing that even if this anime rate is +13 but it's suitable for people who are more than 17 y.o like me ^^ because a lot of its events are similar to reality .
Last thing , the comedy scenes are really amazing
I advise people who want to enjoy an anime full of comedy to watch Gintama.

There is something that nobody talks about in gintama. Even though it's one of, if not the most important detail that most people can't seem to be able to accept.

Gintama fans have to stop fleeing reality.

This is the second season of Gintama, so you'll be watching this after 201 episodes of S1. I'll get right into it, no need to explain the world of this anime.

In a seemingly normal episode, in that it's so crazy, Gintoki, after getting himself completely drunk, and forgetting what happened the night before, believes to have slept with 5 girls : otae, sarutobi, tsukuyo, kyubi, otose, and as if that ... didn't seem much, with hasegawa too(a midle aged man). everything makes him believe that he did sleep with them, as they make him take responsability.
So the episode unfolds, it's as over the top as ever, it's very funny haha, but at the same time it makes you wonder : will character development and relationships change in the future ? well no : again, the funny haha : it turns out they all did this to make gintoki understand he shouldn't drink too much, as he had wrecked the bar they drank too.

so it ends, relationships stay the same, the very funny.

but do they?

the thing is... at the end of the episode...
played like a joke...
Hasegawa...
reveals he wasn't part of the plan.

Yes. You heard me. He wasn't part of the part of the plan to make gintoki believe he slept with him to make him understand he shouldn't drink too much.
You understand what I mean. You remember your sealed memories. Chaos unfolds into your mind as I call you back to reality.
But you won't overcome your traumas by rejecting them.
Gintoki did have a sexual relationship with hasegawa.
this relationship, a very important one, isn't touched upon later in the series.
but this is how it is.
as important as this relevation may seem : meaning that the show will never be the same, it won't be the funny haha joke, but the very serious hoho, there's also the fact that Gintoki rejects having slept with Hasegawa. Though it's said by hattori he had a smile after spending 20 minutes alone with Hasegawa the former night.

yes. That's the final important revelation I have for you. Gintoki is Homosexual, and he rejects it.

wether you want to ignore this as most fans, or accept it and move on : it's a very important thing that you should take into account as you go into Gintama S2 and onward.

In seriousness though, Gintama' is one of the best animes out there bar none. The arcs were amazing, the humor was amazing, and we aren't a 4:3 aspect ratio from Gintama so that is certainly an upgrade as well.

Story: Though there is a resemblance of a story, a bunch of arcs and humor are just glued together. We still have not seen the Amanto yet which is the entire synopsis of the anime. But at the same time, there were a lot of internal conflicts happening throughout the story.

Animation: Beautiful. Sometimes it gets lazy but other than ... that there is really a lot of attention to detail. Amazing animation.

Humor: Though humor is always subjective, this one stuck with me. The fact that the show was super self-aware is amazing. The one funeral episode will never be forgotten holy crap I died laughing at that episode. Honestly, that one funeral episode made the entire show a 10/10. The funeral episode may be one of the single greatest episodes of Anime ever, on par with The Broken Seal of Shonen Naruto, the Mazda RX7 Rising Suns battle episode of Initial D, or some others I cannot name off the top of my head. Amazing show.

Why you should watch it: Well, one reason. It's goddamn Gintama that's why! It is in the top 10 for a reason. It is amazing. If you have not seen the first four seasons, watch that then this. By the way, if you are ever discouraged from starting Gintama, sip the first two episodes.

Gintama is in 16:9! Honestly, that is a genuine improvement in this season of Gintama as well as the animation. The look of this season was so much nicer than the first season, of course, since it's newer.

But I'm not here to talk about art style. I was pleasantly surprised with the arcs in this season. In the first 201 episodes, I enjoyed probably 85-90% of the arcs regardless of if they were comedy or not, but this season, I didn't dislike any arcs. There were a couple arcs that drug on a bit too long for my liking or were a bit too, ... for lack of a better word, stupid to be super good, but all the arcs this season had really awesome points that I loved. Of course, I'm talking about the comedy arcs here, and the main arcs are an entirely different story.

The major story arcs this season didn't hit as hard as the serious arcs in the first 201 episodes. However, that being said, this season did remarkably well with the action scenes. Because of the improved animation, but also because of the stories of the two major story arcs, the fight scenes in this season looked gorgeous both in choreography and the contents. The stories themselves were interesting, though they felt more like build-up than anything else, which is fine. There was one particular episode that I was happy to see included as it offered some development for the antagonist that was lacking previously. In addition, there was some really good character development this season that stood out with a couple of the characters.

Gintama still kills it, the comedy is still awesome and actually even better than before (though not as fourth-wall-breaky anymore), and the serious arcs still feel special. Most of this season was small, comedic arcs, but I loved it all the same. On to the next.

Continuing on from the foundation of Gintama (2006), Gintama' only improves. The long-awaited shift to 16:9 only enhances the series and there is a noticeable improvement in animation quality. However, the heart of the series remains unaffected as the character’s ruthless, self-referential comedy keeps the series from becoming something it isn’t.

Gintama''s greatest strength is its characters. Whether considered a main character or part of the supporting cast, they all have their own eccentricities and unique viewpoints that make them stand out. New additions to ... the cast are fleshed out in the short amount of time they have on screen, making them feel integral to the anime’s world. While some had been foreshadowed in the earlier series, others were introduced for the first time and yet it feels like they have always been there. This balancing act is difficult, yet Gintama’ pulls it off.

The story is also quintessentially Gintama’, blending comedy with action and drama in an addictive way that makes it difficult to stop watching. There are more episodes dedicated to the longer arcs, allowing the story to develop in a familiar way while devoting more time to the action scenes. Yet they don’t hang around for longer than they need to; it never devolves to waiting for an arc to end. There is also more appreciation for the emotional moments… there were a lot in Gintama, but Gintama’ manages to improve on the format. The background plot also moves forward in a way that keeps it intriguing without sacrificing the looser structure, or themes, of Gintama’.

This is a perfect continuation of the series, and if you love Gintama (2006) then Gintama’ will be one of the best shows you could watch. Everything that was done well at the start is improved upon and made even better.

Gintama 2?

A long anime can get exhausting at times, but in Gintama, I've enjoyed every episode with the hope that it will never end. Of course, such a sympathy bomb must also end one day, this is inevitable.

This season is still one of the better Gintama seasons from the "golden Gintama times" before the mediocre main plot took over the episodes.

You get a full load of humor, idiotic behavior, and wonderful entertainment here again. This is what sets Gintama apart for many. No detailed story, no profound characters with great ambitions.
Indeed, Gintama is not an anime for people who prefer "detail or plot" and that ... is not what we should look for here. This anime is still just a humorous parody shounen that only develops a plot towards the end.

However, some "Serious Arcs" are included here, which are so adored by the community. I have to admit that they were a bit better than their predecessors, but in general, they were only slightly above average. The approach is simple, the implementation is normal, but the scenes are again drawn out. And as expected, Gintama has not given up his penchant for melodrama. I love Gintama and think that this anime can be dramatic and shocking, but not when he tries to rub it under your nose. They often try to enormously pull out various dramatic scenes and chew through them for as long as possible. And this is exactly what ruins the atmosphere and tension. It is unclear to me whether this is only the case in the anime or whether the manga also did it that way.

Apart from that, the humor this season has been amazing again! In all honesty, it's so rare that an anime really manages to make me grin or laugh. Gintama just knows how to use "nonsense" and "character-related humor". Especially since you've known the characters for so long through the episodes and just thinks "Oh god, what's that crazy bird doing next" and it's always a surprise. The two high-flyers are still Hasegawa and Katsura, who probably produce the best humorous scenes.

You can't say much about the characters, there have been some new ones who are mostly average and only have slight traits that correspond to the typical Gintama level.
As expected, the usual familiar faces are still complete clowns and failures of society. Exactly those failures whose everyday life sustains our lives.
Of course, they are not written in-depth or excellently. However, they are complex, personable, and have tremendous personalities.
I could write more about the respective characters, but that would not lead to anything.

The animations are still above average and can maintain a certain level, even if this is not particularly remarkable. But still satisfactory for such a long shounen. Musically, the series is held by the same well-known Osts. There are also some new and pleasant intro songs.


Gintama continues to be a work that can either be loved or hated thanks to its bizarre content. For me, it is by far one of the strongest and best character-related comedies I have ever seen and has an excellent implementation in this area. If Gintama were all a comedy without a plot, I could have given more points. Unfortunately, the serious arcs keep dragging the streak down.

This anime is really awesome and I recommend everyone to watch it. The imperfections of the characters are really awesome, the quotes are simple yet deep and straight to the heart of the viewers. THIS ANIME MADE ME LAUGH SO MUCH, CRY AND EVERYTHING. This is really AWESOME.

This is one of the strangest, most unique funniest pieces of media ever created by mankind. It is a work unlike any other. It doesn’t just break the fourth wall. If there was a fifth wall it would break that too. It probably killed it author several times over, it’s a miracle that this show even got made it is hilarious it is action packed but most importantly it is character driven These are some of the most flushed out characters I have ever seen in any media.

Many anime have filler arcs, but none do them quite like Gintama does. It also crosses over by ... father anime regularly looks at him and makes fun of Shounen the magazine. The sub version is good. The dub version is good. Any version of this is great.
Even the movie is worth seeing.

Just WARING SPOILERS AHEAD.
Usually I don't write reviews but I felt this one deserved one this anime has a complex plot that truly carries out till the last episode it has sprinkles of fanservice FOR BOTH males and females it's one of the few to pull off mixing fanservice with the plot and they do it quite well the fanservice fits either the character or the plot it's never crammed don't your throat.

Character development is phenomenal and you can see it gradually progress throughout each episode. It's one of those animes that lures you with fanservice and then you continue watching for the amazing plot ... and character development I highly recommend it.

Where do I begin with this review...

I have cried at a few anime, and laughed out loud at a handful. Gintama in both seasons 1 and 2 has made me do both. Season 2 more than Season 1. Even where I fins the Arc itself to be average somehow at the end they can generate tears.

The second season ramps up from the first in terms of graphics and character development. The humour is also more consistent and there are a number of heart warming endings.

That said I can't give it a 10 because the same problems from Season 1 remain, that there are ... a few too many average comedy episodes, in particular near the end of the season where it feels like they were running out of budget. The best arc in fact occurs near the start of the series, and whilst there are a couple of other good arcs I was a little disappointed by the lack of a second really good arc.

But overall it scrapes a 9 just from the fact that it did enough to make me laugh and cry more than any other anime. There are other anime that can do one or the other but Gintama somehow manages both. If only they could master the quality continuity a little better this would have reached a 10 ranking...

Nonetheless a very enjoyable watch and a good follow up to the first season.

What is Gintama about? Well, according to Gin-san: "We don't even know". But for me, Gintama is a great filler with some anime bows tucked in the middle of genius shapes.

Gintama tells a story about Japan at a time when it was dominated by alien forces, the plot focuses on our four protagonists: Gintoki, Shinpachi, Kagura and Sadaharu. Now speaking of the anime, Gintama is very good indeed, all the characters have a different charisma, from their personalities to their beliefs, like our revolutionary Zura, oh my mistake, "Zura janai, Katsura da.", Dear Hasegawa-san (Madao), the whole shinsegumi ... from Kondo-san (gorilla), Hijikata-san (mayonnaise) Okita-kun (sadist), among others. Seriously, there are soooo many characters, which turns out to be a problem too, as it's impossible to always show them all, so there are times when they just disappear for several episodes and yet more characters still appear, there are a few moments when that happens. makes it nauseating, but Gintama's universe is undoubtedly incredible, with the advent of aliens it is easy to put up with many different situations ranging from comedy (like all scenes in which Baka, I say, Hata Ouji appears) to dramas (Like Prejudice that exists between the amantos and humans), this is something strong in Gintama, is a shounen that has comedy as its essence, but knows how to create various heavy and sad situations, an example of this are the side storys of the villains, there are some that in fact they made me water. Apart from all these points, the songs, the soundtracks are wonderful, they fit the scenes very well and the amount they use is amazing (if you have the time looking for some playlist to hear some). And it's amazing how the stories fit together.

But undoubtedly, the characters are the most captivating things in the works, you may end up not liking one or the other, but it is impossible not to like at least one of them. Even such "villains" have their story very well developed, which makes you even more fond of Gintama, creating a special affection for this great "void of anime" and full of feelings. Not all episodes will make you laugh, or make you cry, but some of them will touch you, I'm sure, and don't underestimate Gintama because he wants to take everything in comedy, it's the author's way of showing that you should laugh even at times that seem impossible. Speaking of Gorilla (not Kondo), I find it impressive how he can mess with those who watch his work, but undeniable the clear improvement of the adaptation, the studio and director managed to give a unique air with all those 4th wall breaks.
Perhaps the only 'problem' in Gintama for us (from the west) is the various references to the culture there, such as the structure of their language or actors, comedians and the sennyu themselves (voice actors). Which makes some episodes extremely boring unless you really understand. I also think that not all ages can really appreciate Gintama, I remember I started watching when I was 10 ~ 11 and found it extremely, because I was a shounen without those screaming powers stuff or a protagonist who was really “badass” but Today, with my 19 years, I can enjoy much more. But I don't want to talk about it, so give Gintama a try, it's an amazing anime that has a lot to show you, both in history, in comedy, and of course in characters.

(PT-Br) Do que se trata Gintama? Bem, de acordo com o Gin-san: "Nem nós sabemos". Mas para mim, Gintama é um grande filler com alguns arcos de anime enfiados no meio de formas geniais.

Gintama conta uma história sobre o Japão em um momento em que ele foi dominado por forças alienígenas, a trama tem como foco nossas quatro protagonistas: Gintoki, Shinpachi, Kagura e Sadaharu. Agora falando do anime, Gintama é de fato muito bom, todos os personagens tem um carisma diferente, desde suas personalidades até suas crenças, como nosso revolucionário Zura, oh erro meu, "Zura janai, Katsura da.", o querido Hasegawa-san (Madao), toda a shinsegumi desde o Kondo-san (gorila), Hijikata-san (maionese) Okita-kun (sadista), entre outros. Sério, tem muuuuuuitos personagens, o que acaba sendo um problema também, pois é impossível mostrar todos eles sempre, então tem alguns momentos em que eles simplesmente desaparecem por vários episódios e ainda assim continuam a aparecer mais personagens, tem alguns momentos em que isso se torna enjoativo, mas o universo de Gintama é sem dúvida incrível, com o advento dos alienígenas fica fácil colocar várias situações diferentes que vão desde comédia (como todas as cenas em que o Baka, digo, Hata Ouji aparece) até dramas (Como o preconceito que existe entre os amantos e os humanos), isso sim é algo forte em Gintama, é um shounen que tem a comédia como essência, mas sabe criar várias situações pesadas e tristes, um exemplo disso são as side storys dos vilões, tem algumas que de fato me fizeram lacrimejar. Além de todos esses pontos, as músicas, as soundtracks são maravilhosas, elas encaixam muito bem com as cenas e a quantidade que eles usam é incrível (se tiver um tempo procura algum playlist pra ouvir algumas). E são impressionantes como as histórias se encaixam.

Mas sem dúvidas, os personagens são as coisas mais cativantes das obras, você pode acabar não gostando de um ou outro, mas é impossível de não gostar de pelo menos um deles. Até os tais “vilões” tem suas histórias muito bem desenvolvidas, o que te faz gostar ainda mais de Gintama, criar um afeto especial por esse grande “vazio de anime” e cheio de sentimentos. Nem todos os episódios vão te fazer rir, ou te fazer chorar, mas alguns deles vai te tocar, tenho certeza, e não subestime Gintama por ele querer levar tudo na comédia, é o jeito do autor mostrar que você deve rir até em momentos que parecem impossíveis. Falando do Gorila (não o Kondo), eu acho impressionante como ele consegue mexer com o quem assiste sua obra, mas é inegável a clara melhora da adaptação, o estúdio e diretor conseguiram dar um ar único com todas aquelas quebras da 4° parede.
Talvez o único ‘‘problema’’ em Gintama para nós (do ocidente) sejam as várias referências a cultura de lá, como na estrutura de sua língua ou atores, comediantes e os próprios sennyu (dubladores). O que faz alguns episódios serem extremamente “chatos”, a menos que você realmente entenda. Também acho que nem todas as idades conseguem apreciar de fato Gintama, lembro que comecei a assistir quando tinha 10~11 anos e achei extremamente, pois era um shounen sem aquelas coisas de gritar poderes ou um protagonista que fosse de fato “badass”, mas hoje, com meus 19 anos, consigo aproveitar muito mais. Mas eu não quero me estender falando disso, então, deem uma chance a Gintama, é um anime incrível que tem muito o que te mostrar, tanto em história, quanto em comédia e, claro, em personagens.

There are some differences between seasons of Gintama one of most important is that Gintama is getting more serious first season is more like a comedy one second and third and bit serious and like this till the end. There are lot of people who don't really like this and i will say its personal, I like where it’s going because it has potential this way too and i like that they are using it and I must also say that comedy part isn't lost its just got less. Second season is still more comedy, also new characters were added and more "love story" theories ... become possible: D. Well what i can say again?HILLARIOUS but this season we dive into Gintoki's past with Otose and that's really gory and sad.I want to say this season is a little darker than previous season with Shinsegumi facing new rival.All of this will build up to the great sequel.This is Gintama so i think you guys already know all of this.Yeah it's still good and will fill you with laugh every time you watch it.Don't forget the greatest arc in this season Scandal Arc you will have nonstop laugh and one particular episode about burial ceremony which is one of the funniest anime episode i ... ever watched.HOLY MOLY WHAT A JOYFUL RIDE.It's Gintama anime on their unique way.I watched alll of this in 3 days and i still can't forget it.The art is normal just like sound.One ending is good especially that bloody arc.Overall:100 MILLION POINTS YOU WILL REWATCH AGAIN.

If you like lighthearted, slice of life, comedy gintama is definitely for you. Gintamas main plot is. there are aliens who came to earth and took over edo. It follows the main character gintoki (who works as a freelancer) and his two friends kagura and shinpachi. They take on many jobs and meet a lot of fun likeable characters.

if you want to watch a anime for a compelling story from what I’ve seen so far (I’m on episode 73) gintama might not be for you but if you just want to have a good time. And get some laughs in and maybe shed some tears ... I’m sure you’d love gintama

Gintama is the best , it has a place in my heart dearly... by the thought of being one with the characters while watching the series is good enough for me. Thanks for the wonderful masterpiece you made, Sorachi-sensei how I wish tho if Gintama stays in a sazae-san like format kinda show. I like their interactions to one another and so on...

The way they joke around on other anime using parodies got me there. Gintama is the parody king and also the inside jokes that only most otakus can ride on makes you want to know more about the Japanese culture

If I'm being real here, this second season doesn't really feel like much of an upgrade from the first season of Gintama other than the fact that its now finally in 16:9. The first two episodes of this second season had my hopes up that this show was gonna go in a new and exiting direction, but instead they decided to go back to their old typical ways of lowest common denominator humor.


The story feels exactly the same as how it did in the first season which is something I'm happy about because the single episodes with the ... occasional 3-6 episode arcs is a very clever strategy, especially for a show that's this long.


The art is definitely an upgrade from the first season. I have very mixed thoughts on sunrise studios because they are a very hit or miss studio in my opinion, but they give Gintama the nice smooth animation it deserves.


Just like the first season, the soundtrack and voice acting are easily my favorite part of this show because its so simple to tell that the voice actors are giving this they're absolute all. And just like the first season, the OP's & ED's of this second season are absolutely slaps as hell. I really have to give this show credit on one thing that despite how decent, yet ridiculously overrated both this show and second season is, this anime seriously has some bomb ass taste in music, dawg. Like forreal, I can listen to these OP's and ED's all day with no complaints.


The characters is where I'm kind of let down on in this sequel season because I was seriously expecting this show to continue on with everyone being 2 years older with Shinpachi being the only one who didn't change. The first 2 episodes felt new, refreshing, and exiting. So it really hit me hard when I discovered that they weren't gonna give this series the Shippuden treatment. Other than that, my symptoms on these characters hasn't changed at all since season 1, and I believe that's probably for the better. But I will mention this that I forgot to say in my season 1 review of Gintama. How Gintoki is still alive is beyond me because I don't think folks have really thought to themselves just how much extremely physical painful moments Gintoki has tolerated. I mean, this man has literally gotten stabbed in his appendix, had one of his balls sliced in half, and somehow he's still standing on his own 2 feet. Like this mans such a badass, and he's a character who even influences me a little. Katsura is still my favorite supporting character in this show despite only making appearances here and there. Another supporting character that I really enjoy is Tatsuma. I forgot to mention that in my first season review, but I really enjoy Tatsuma's optimistic cocky personally, even though being cocky is his weakness. This man doesn't fear no one, and is always keeping it cool which is my favorite part of his character, and what makes him stand out from the other characters. I forreal believe that Tatsuma is underrated as hell, and I'm very happy that this 2nd season acknowledged that he lacks screen time.


As I said a little earlier; the 2 year time skip arc left me disappointed knowing that nothing was gonna change both humor wise, and character wise. The Jugem arc was pretty damn weak in my opinion simply because it was unfunny and stupid, and the same thing can be said about the Scandal arc. However, this second season did offer some fine ass arcs at the same time. Like the Vacation arc I thought was pretty fun, even though it was just Tokugawa ShigeShige getting lost and abused like a damn toy. I forreal fell a little bad for ShigeShige, like he's a cool dude he's chill af, but he's always getting treated by others like an object more than a human being. But by far my favorite arc of this season was the star wars parody Renho arc because this arc shined on all the aspects I love about Gintama. Katsura and Elizabeth really steal the show in this arc, and Tatsuma finally gets time to shine in this arc. Although the Dark Vader joke was a little weak (it would've been more clever if they called him Darth Elizabeth or Duck Vader.) it was still cool nonetheless. I also found the several Elizabeth clones with different hairstyle's and fashion very fascinating. This arc is easily one of the best arcs of the whole damn series.


Overall, this second season felt more or less the same as the first season, which is by no means a bad thing, but I just found the time skip arc only lasting 2 episodes to be kind of a dick move. The humor is exactly the same with the same bathroom jokes that in anime at least I really don't find appealing. Like if I really wanted to see lowest common denominator humor, I'd go watch Bryant Moreland or something like that. And on top of that, I still think that this anime is decent, but nothing to write home about. And like I said in my first season review; its easy to understand why people love this show, but people just push it way much in my point of view. So yeah, after watching 252 episodes of this anime out of 375, I think it's safe to say that this anime definitely isn't for everyone. Don't get me wrong, I think Gintama's a fun anime, but that high bar that everyone is giving this show is just too high for me to reach.


With all that being said, I'm gonna put this anime on hold for about a year or 2 until I check out the rest of the seasons simply because I feel like I could be watching something that I would enjoy more than Gintama, and also because I got through 252 episodes, so I'm already over halfway there. Personally, I don't really recommend this second season or this show, but don't take my word on that because if you want to watch this anime or this second season regardless of what I told you here, by all means be my guest because there's a good chance that you'll love this anime a hell of a lot more than I did. So in conclusion, I believe that Gintama is a decent, yet overwhelmingly overrated anime with lots of ups and downs, and until I continue this series from season 3 to the final season; I'm gonna take a one year break from this show, so pls bare with me. Gintama, and by that I do mean Gintama, not Gintama', as in the first season had a clear trend of long standing arcs slowly getting better, and more absurd, with the characters gaining a but more definition over time. Well Gintama', and this time I do mean Gintama' take the shortcomings of Gintama and, while not fixing them, makes a good effort in that direction. What I mean is that some of the characters who were a bit weaker, that I mentioned in the first review did some catching up.

The ... story is probably the biggest improvement Gintama' offered compared to its prequel. Aside from a few stand outs, like the Benizakura arc, the serious arcs in Gintama were self contained stories. They were still good on their own but they were held back because they didn't mean much in the grand narrative, aside from introducing and developing some characters. In Gintama' there are about as much serious arcs with an impact on the main plotline as the first season while being close to a quarter of the size.

For the production, well, don't fix what ain't broken, it still looks as good as it used to, officializing the full usage of the screen while looking that tiny bit shinier, something about making it to the 2010s.

I think all those small improvements warrant the switch from a high 7 to a low 8, although it is very debatable.
