Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu

I feel extremely bothered for giving the score that I did, and there are two reasons for that: it is on MyAnimeList top10 of films and the amount of reviews giving this film 9 and 10.

The film is good, but maybe what I am missing, and some other people will as well, is a bit of context. If this film was a standalone kind of thing I would give a 7 with no remorse, but it seems that people really liked the series, 1st season was great, 2nd season was bad and this film was the series' redemption, that's why I think people gave the ... film a high score because it saved the series from the 2nd season fiasco.

I haven't watched anything about those characters before, so I am not emotionally attached to them, but don't mistake me thinking that this is a bad movie, which is not, but it's just not as good as people are portraying - if your interest is just watching the movie, maybe if you watch the series first you will enjoy it better.

Before watching this movie, I've already completed the light novel which it was adapted from. So this review won't be so biased even if I've just finished this movie. Even if I already know what will happen, this movie is still great for me to watch, and certainly for those who haven't watched it. No doubt why it ranks so high.
It would be wasteful to write a long paragraph about the plot, as numerous (and excellent) reviews had already done so. Basically it's witty and entertaining, with proper depth in some points. Comparing with those movies which do nothing but repeat the ... anime, Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu is a real surprise. Personally I think that this is the best thing so far written by Tanigawa Nagaru. Besides, the final scene is really great.
As for the art, Kyoiani the name itself tells everything. Still, as they just kept the style from the anime (which they started in 2006), I felt a little bit disappointed as it doesn't change much.
Both the Seiyuu performance and the music are great and shed new lights on the characters. Although the OP is the same with anime, the new ED is very intriguing and the lyric fits very well, as if Nagato Yuki is confessing her heart.
The character is also comprehensively discussed already so I won't say much. Still I don't think Haruhi is just an ordinary supporting role. In the changed world she actually pushed Kyon to investigate further. Without her, Kyon would just complain about their disappearance forever and do nothing. It's not just for the plot, but Haruhi's spirit as well. She is not just bossy and immature.
This movie is a rather loyal adaptation from the already outstanding plot, so the enjoyment is granted. I can still feel the tensity even if I've read the light novel. There are also some original scenes, which are also great, like the last scene. As some other reviewers had said, this movie could be the pinnacle of the whole Suzumiya Haruhi Series.
Overall, for those who haven't watched the movie, watch it and you can know yourself why it's excellent.

Okay before I start off this review can I just say please watch the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya before watching this. You will enjoy it a lot more.

Alright then now that is over let's start the review. What can I say about this film? In my opinion its a masterpiece. It is my first favourite animated film of all time and my 3rd favourite film in general.

I am not going to tell you anything about the story as I don't want to spoil it for anyone but let me tell you it is extremely good.

Art and Sound wise it is amazing as ... well. My favourite track from the soundtrack would be 'Rikishi no Tenkan Ten.' The art direction in this film is brilliant and that just adds more to the experience. You feel like you are actually there.

The characters are just as amazing. You start to have a connection with the characters that makes you care for them and hope they reach their goals. The character you see most in this film is Kyon. He starts realizing how the world is so plain and boring without Haruhi and the SOS Brigade which he took so much for granted.

So anyway overall this film is outstanding. Watch it. You won't be disappointed.

This movie was a menace to my principles; it brought me closer to my utter nightmare, finding the perfect work worthy of my perfect score. The reason I am scared of anime this powerful is because if I do find a perfect work, anything I will watch after it will seem boring, prehistoric or otherwise not as good. This anime challenged this principle of mine that a perfect work cannot exist. Even having said all that, I am still hesitating on the final score since it was without question one of the best works I have seen; I will remember it for a long time.

The ... first thing that should be mentioned about this movie would be that fact that it is imperative that you watch the first episode of the second season of this series, you will still be able to enjoy the movie if you do not see that episode, but the experience will less likely be as pleasurable as it could. The story in this anime is actually pretty complicated, simply because is has to be more deduced and guessed rather than it being simply thrown on the spectator, making it a very interesting and developed story. This said complexity pushes you to theorise and elaborate on things you took for granted or thought were immutable if you are a suzumiya fan. Sadly, to comprehend the actual movie you have to have watch at least the first season of the suzumiya chronicles, else you will not understand a thing and will be lost by the time the two and a half hours are finished, then again, even if you have seen the suzumiya series, you will probably still be slightly lost by the time the credits roll. And that is the only thing i can actually criticise, the fact that this movie was so complicated was what made it so enjoyable but so confusing and sometimes irritating, that is the beauty of this movie, it confuses you to a point you are forced to reflect to comprehend and actually made it a very enjoyable experience. Unsurprisingly, the mood of this movie drastically changes from the anime to this, being less of a comedic parody and focusing a lot more on character development and on the drama part that was slightly showed in the anime, yet, this change only positively affects the overall outcome of the movie. I have read some complaints everywhere on the net about the fact that hahuri suzumiya wasent present enough in the movie and that it made it boring, if you are such a person, i will be pleased to refer you to the actual title of the movie (hence the disappearing part) and gently ask you to shut up. The main aspect that i found interesting was the character focused story rather than event focused story, plus we actually got a focus on kyon’s character which is simply amazing. In the end, all the changes made in the story rendred it amazing, all the changes from the anime we loved absolutely fitted in the movie I now adore, it was simply amazing.

Ps: question everything, especially kyon’s origins. It might bring you interesting reflections.

Obviously enough, the characters in the movie were as breathtaking, if not more, than the characters in the anime. The story shaking the very foundations of the anime actually did the same thing to the characters, ever so changing them and revealing a part of them that was left unexplored (as i mentioned in my first Haruhi suzumiya review). The fact that we are shown this new aspect of the characters refreshes the subject and actually made the whole experience not only as breathtaking as the anime but surprisingly traumatic and even odd. Then again, that weirdness only complemented the actual beauty of the final work. Also, the fact that we are shown this new side of the characters permits us to define their personality and their background a lot more, it permitted us to completely redefine the characters and make us bond with them again. In the end, I was not only entirely astonished by the characters; it also brought me back to the point of worship of Haruhi I was before the endless 8.

I don’t know what to say about the artwork. By that I mean, isn’t it obvious that it is simply amazing? It was detailed, beautiful, smooth, nice, magnificent, and almost made me depressed because it was realistic and made my world look like total crap for a second. The real beauty of the movie was actually the details of the facial expressions and the care they took to make it representative of the emotions lived by the characters.

The music was also obviously amazing, but better than that the movie actually exploited almost perfectly the impact of silence. The music was excellently placed and very emotive, it stated perfectly the emotions shown in the scenes. It was perfect.

In the end, this is definitely one of the best works I have ever seen. It was complicated, yes, but it was wonderfully special. There is no way comprehend how I appreciated this anime. I recommended it to anyone.

It was that good to me, and I would recommend it to anyone.

It would be impossible to watch this movie without being well acquainted with the previous two seasons of Haruhi. You have to know what is different in order to follow the story. This is also a great story for those who are into the relationship stuff with the different characters.

It simply begins with Kyon waking up one day and Haruhi is gone, no one remembers her, and Nagato and Asahina are normal humans. I found myself pulled along with Kyon's tramatic experience of a world without Haruhi, wondering if he is happy that his life is normal as he always wished and mentally complained ... about.

All in all, this is a Kyon and Nagato movie and really a wonderful delve into both their characters.

A Note about the Series (no spoiler):
I know most people hated the Endless Fight episodes, and watching them and waiting a week and watching and waiting and frustration and disbelief and waiting and waiting and waiting and then Finally. Victory! Something different! And then impressed that they had the balls to go eight episodes like that. And when i watch the season again (someday soon i guess) i'll probably skip some of the endless fight, or watch it and pick out the difference camera work. But nothing could remake that first feeling and relief and jumping up and down that Kyon got off his butt and fixed the problem! And the relief that it was finally over! It was a victory and really different experience as a viewer. So i don't hate it. It made me appreciate Haruhi a little more.

When it comes to the original "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya," I spent hours of my life re-watching clips, and frequently thought about the show both by myself and with friends. I thought that the series couldn’t get any better. I’m happy to say that I was wrong; "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" completely surpassed all my expectations; I have watched it numerous times over the course of my life, and each time come away with a sense that I've seen something special.

Christmas is coming, and Haruhi (Hirano Ayo / Wendee Lee) is abuzz with plans for the SOS Brigade. The ... ever-so-reluctant Kyon (Sugita Tomokazu / Crispin Freeman) braces himself for the inevitable humiliation that will come. Upon waking up one day, the entire world has changed. Everyone is getting sick, but most shocking of all, Haruhi is missing, as is Koizumi (Ono Daisuke / Johnny Yong Bosch). Mikuru (Gotō Yūko / Stephanie Sheh) doesn’t recognize Kyon, and Nagato’s (Chihara Minori / Michelle Ruff) personality is completely different. The only one seemingly unaffected by the changes, Kyon must discover what exactly happened to the world and set it back to the way it was.

What immediately stands out as exemplary is the animation. The famous “God Bless” scene from "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" had a noticeable increase in quality compared to the already-high quality of animation beforehand. With a larger budget, Kyoto Animation allowed similar quality for the entire two-plus hours of the film. Characters move through space with such fluidity and poise, and the care for color contrast is just as stunning. I was acutely aware of the extent of shading. Attention to detail is top-notch.

The sound itself was also of marked excellence. The original actors from both the English and Japanese dubs of the television series make their return. Crispin Freeman is still perfect in his performance as Kyon, while Wendee Lee is able to capture the boundless, occasionally-nauseating enthusiasm of the titular girl, just as she did many times prior. Though the Japanese dub I feel was able to capture better nuances and overall deliveries, all involved in the English version were good. The soundtrack makes excellent use of Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes, and orchestrations are lush.

But most noteworthy is that, unlike the television series which was brimming with exuberant energy, warmth, and comedy, this film’s environment is cold, literally and figuratively. There is a smattering of funny moments, but these are small gleams in a harsh world. Rather than serving as a deterrent, it causes the opposite effect. "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya’s" starkly contrasted atmosphere does not come at the price of lackluster writing for the characters. Despite the memory changes, no one acts in a fashion that is unbecoming of their established personalities. Mikuru is still the adorable cutie, Koizumi still has that off-kilter, positive attitude, and Haruhi is still full of herself.

There are, however, two notable exceptions in Kyon and Nagato. Though the scenario impacts all members of the SOS Brigade, most of the time is spent with them. Their relationship is one of the more fascinating within the original show, and the dichotomy between Nagato’s new personality and the unchanged Kyon makes for an uncomfortable dynamic. Kyon’s initial desperate attempts to make heads or tails of this new world by confronting Nagato is painful to watch, not because Kyon is being malicious, nor because it’s a side of him we’ve never really seen. Rather, we know he won’t get his answer. As he slumped dejectedly in his chair and Nagato stands against the wall completely embarrassed, my heart sank for both of them.

As for Nagato, she was the laconic bookworm whose emotionless face barely uttered a word. Here, she has more to say. Even so, the emotionless barrier is replaced with one that is quite shy. Her nose in a book is now a means to screen herself from anxious interactions. The moments where she opens up and talks are profound not due to what’s necessarily said—strong as those words may be—but instead that things are actually being said at all. Her facial expressions show the sheer amount of effort that it takes for her to do such a thing. Sometimes, she still can’t muster the courage to say something. It’s sad to watch. Plus, now that Michelle Ruff and Chihara Minori are no longer limited to deliberately-robotic deliveries, they get the chance to show off their voice acting skills wonderfully.

I have not discussed the story in much detail. Indeed, trying to talk about this plot without spoiling is frustrating since so many elements of this film are interwoven with each other and the original series. "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" is difficult to recommend if one has not yet watched the show. To get the most out of the experience, seeing the show is necessary.

One aspect that I may talk about in greater detail however relates to Kyon, or namely, the side of Kyon that is most apparent in the film. In the original series, Kyon is simply trying to go through his high school life while putting up with the antics of Haruhi, showing no qualms about his malcontent. In spite of his repeated barbs about wanting things to at least calm down a little bit, part of his charm was that we never felt like we truly knew what he was thinking. The way he would phrase something every once in a while would cast doubt for the viewer on just how much he did or did not know or felt. Kyon is clearly intelligent, but as the voice that leads the audience, he may choose what we ourselves do and do not know. He’s the textbook definition of an unreliable narrator.

Perhaps for the first time that we have known him, "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" shows Kyon at his most honest. The grappling he has of whether it’s worth the effort to put the world back to the way it was swings back and forth, and logically so. When Kyon finally settles on a decision, he’s thrust into a subconscious quiz with himself, one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema. The imagery becomes surreal as Kyon takes a hard look at what he’s feeling, and the writing and music here is great. I won’t disclose what kind of honesty is exposed, but to say it’s gripping is an understatement.

And “gripping” is the perfect word for my whole experience. Even for its nearly three hour runtime, "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" grabbed my attention and never let go. When it ended, I sat and stared at the blank screen, in awe of what I just watched. While I would love for there to be a third season of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" with the stories not yet adapted from the light novels, if this film is the last canonical story in the animated franchise we’ll be getting, I’m glad it ended on such a triumph. This series, with all its phenomenal characters and stories, deserved nothing less than the best.

And that’s what it got.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is a great movie. From it's TV series, I had fun. This series really makes you feel like you're a part of their adventure. But of course, everything comes to an end. This movie gave me a heavy feeling because, it's now over.

So what is this all about? Well, Kyon is either set to another world or his world has been revised. On this world, everything is different. Asahina doesn't recognize him, Nagato is different, Class 1-9 is gone - Everything changed. This is where it all starts - Kyon's adventure to solve this mystery.

This movie also fixes the plot ... holes that the TV series had.

The story is great. The drama was pulled off very well especially if you like the TV series. Although, there's a plot hole left at the ending which I really dislike but overall, it was one heck of a ride and this is one emotional movie.

The animation is great too. There are stuff where everything goes so smoothly and also the supernatural animation was really great.

The opening theme is the first opening theme but the ending theme was different. The ending theme was really great too and it really feels "emotional". The OSTs used on this movie - some were light and some were heavy and it really fits the movie itself.

Well, if I loved the characters on the TV series, I loved the characters more on the movie. Now, the characters maybe typical but it's how they blend and interact. That's what makes the characters good. The characters on this series are really memorable because of their adventure.

The main character on this movie is Kyon. This is his point of view on how he will solve this "error". He is left with this question - Would he prefer the original world or the new world? His interactions are very realistic and it isn't really cliche. I was expecting he would act so cliche in the ending but, surprisingly he didn't. I like to explain why but then I would end up spoiling so, let's just leave it like that.

The second main character on this movie is Yuki Nagato. She is very quiet throughout the TV series but, we now see her counterpart - a shy bookworm. This movie explains that she indeed have feelings throughout the TV series. She was expressing her emotions on this movie.

Haruhi Suzumiya? Well, she doesn't have much screen time but I don't really think we need more development from her on this movie. That's why the TV series existed in the first place.

Is this movie worth watching? 100% yes however, you cannot watch this movie if you haven't watched the TV series. If you watch the movie first then it will leave you with gigantic plot holes.

The reason why you should watch this movie is because of the feels that it offers. It tells you that you shouldn't be such a killjoy in life and just enjoy it. If you don't enjoy, who knows, you might regret it.

This is a faithfull adaptation of the fifth light novel of Suzumiya Haruhi.

In my opinion, this is one of the most exciting story in Haruhi's novels. It has more action, drama and (believe if you want) more sense than other stories. And the movie explored very well those elements.

There are some strong points that I can point out. First, the way how the feelings of the characters are developed during movie, specially Kyon's. Second, the soundtrack (basically classical melodies) and the final song. Both fit well into story and helps the viewer to feel more in touch about ... the characters' emotions.

Although it has some scenes are slowly developed (what makes the movie being so long), it does not make the movie boring. Many surprises appear, and it renews the will of remain watching.

The art remains nearly the same as the series, something that to me was good, and the enjoyment is completely guaranteed. Deserves a 9 in my point of view.

And if there are some parts that you can not understand well (what is pretty common on Suzumiya Haruhi's stories), I highly recommend read the light novels. In this case, the fifth one.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya - 10/10

This movie is Almost 3 hours long. But it's so worth it.
So much Character development, so much emotion and sort of like, analysis of Kyon's point of view on their whole team.
The plot about time-travel may not be that original but hell yeah it's done well, in a style that suits Haruhi the best, espcially with Kyon's monologues. We also got to see the other side of Nagato and it was really really enjoyable.
For anyone who has watched Haruhi, even if you didn't like it, this movie is just perfect.
The art is something between the first Season and the ... 2nd one, and basically i hope it stays that way.

I dont typically watch alot of anime movies but I decided to make an exception for this for two reasons. First of all, I heard such incredible things about it from other viewers, and after having seen both seasons that came before this, I wanted more.

The movie itself having clocked in at over two and a half hours had me skeptical, I didnt know how they would be able to fill that much time but they did! the story was so incredibly deep and pulled elements from everything from seasons one and two which is no small feat. In doing so, this movie actually ... made me appreciate the "endless eight" arc (which up until seeing this movie, I thought was a total BS waste of time, but now I get how important it reallly was).

The story seems pretty cut and dry on the surface as it just being a world where haruhi is gone as well as itsuki, meanwhile yuki and mikuru act as though they've never met kyon before. After this though it gives way more detail into yuki as a person and the way things would have shaped up in the event that kyon and haruhi had never met.

I'm looking at what ive written down thus far and feel that I am in no way, shape, or form doing this movie the justice it deserves. The bottom line is this: the show had amazing potential even if it felt like you watched the same thing happen eight times *cough* but this movie realizes that potential and makes something incredible. It makes you realize that every single part of the series even the "endless eight"(especially the endless eight) was leading up to something so much larger.

I guess Ive probably done a well enough job kissing ass, so I will say that this movie The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is very deserving of the popularity and success it has recieved.

Generally speaking I don't really watch anime movies(?), as if it doesn't have any other franchise, the amount of cut scenes usually destroy any semblance of enjoyment I get out of the story. And about this movie;

First thing I gotta say is that this movie is long. And I mean really long seriously; 2 hours and 40+ minutes. It didn't help that it was pretty late in the night when I sat down to watch it. But did I consider it a waste of time? Hell no!

The movie tells us the story of what would happen if Haruhi Suzumiya never came to ... North High(if I'm not mistaken about the school's name). As you can guess Haruhi being the god/ time distortion/ a much more evolved version of humanity/ etc. that she is, when that school is out of the picture, never gets to create the aliens, time travelers and espers.

So what happens when Kyon suddenly wakes up in such a world, his whole world turned upside down?

In my opinion the movie had one thing the previous franchise lacked: Character development. Taking on a much more serious approach, showing us the shock, panic, horror, hopelessness Kyon experienced throughout the movie, the story and the characters itself deserves 10 out of 10. Art itself is easily superb as it was with the previous show and the music itself was pretty much spot on.

It may seem a little too generous of a rating, especially from someone who didn't like the anime all that much (I'm looking at you Endless Eight). The movie from what I heard at least follows the light novels much more closely and that's a plus in my opinion. Though gotta say that I haven't had the chance of reading them yet.

If you want to see a character driven and much more serious version of the previously and still loved by many Haruhi Suzumiya, this movie is for you.

And If you don't have any idea about what Haruhi Suzumiya is? - Well, This movie is too long to watch while wondering; Who the hell is he/she? What the hell is going on? What're they talking about?

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is everything that the original show should have been. It has mystery, character development, excitement, and a greater focus on the show's supernatural elements. Its a super long movie, almost 3 hours long, but not a single minute feels wasted, and its engaging from beginning to end.

Story: The movie's story finally brings the series' supernatural aspect up close, in front, full force. With Kyon being stuck in a sort of alternate dimension where Haruhi never existed, he frantically runs around trying to make sense of this strange new world and how he got here alongside Yuki, who has a vastly ... different personality. I think the way the movie progresses is interesting. There's an air of mystery around the whole thing, where you'll eagerly follow Kyon as he tries to figure out what in the heck happened and how he's going to get out of this mess. 9/10.

Art and Sound: Being a movie, of course they didn't skimp on the budget. The movie is gorgeous, coupled with the appropriate tracks to suit each situation. 10/10

Characters: This movie actually gives the characters a little welcome development. We see normally calm, cynical Kyon raise his voice and run around in a panic as he's stuck in this alternate reality. We see the other characters acting completely different, with Yuki's being the most striking in contrast to her original character. Quiet little Yuki get's the most development, followed closely by Kyon. By the movie's end, you'll see her differently, not as the quiet and cold little alien. 8/10

Enjoyment: This is an entertaining little movie that is also a most welcome addition to the Haruhi franchise. After a decent first season anime, and a second season plagued by "Endless Eight," it seems this movie presents the series as it should be, and boy does it do it well. 9/10

Okay, it's been years since I had a chance to enjoy haruhi again.. seeing that there's a spin-off coming out I decided to re-watch the movie and remind myself of how much I loved the series. Oh how I was wrong.
Before I start I have to clarify that this 3 hr movie adapts an entire novel, so please don't get your hopes high while watching it.
Story : There was nothing much to the story that can leave haruhi fans (excluding those who have watched the endless 8) with an everlasting impression nor, haters would find interesting.
The story is as simple and straightforward ... unlike the previous series, this takes more of a psychological turn with some romance added to the mix, which was interesting but it's so up and down, the plot feels like it's stopping to advance and then advance and then stop again, it feels like it has no idea if it wants to continue or not. It has some very interesting ideas, but it doesn't use em properly, the whole plot twists and erratic what the hell moments were predictable as hell. Now now, I don't wanna spoil the plot nor what happens, there's a sypnosis for it.

Character : Like always Haruhi is annoying as hell, Mikuru is the moe blob for the fans to fap too.Ah yes,
Kyon or John Smith whichever you prefer. The star of the series and especially the movie he is no exception. The true definition of a well done MC in a show,unlike most overpowered or over the top "best" MC from anime would react to and would know how to deal with this situation, while Kyon is more on the realistic side than most. I cannot hate him for it, infact he is one of the few anime MC's that I like because of his dialect and way of handling things. As being one of the plot points for the film, I have to add the trials he endures in this film. Are well put up for him.
Koizumi, the knowledgeable troll who ironizes Kyon when he wants to. There is..... nothing much I can say about him expect being a comediec point for it.
Nagato, her development is one of the critical points of the movie, her fans will be delighted to see what happens to her.

Overall : Since Koizumi and Haruhi got 1/4 screen time. The movie was more enjoyable than it should of been. 9/10 or 4.5/5 however you prefer.


Sound : The OST and in the movie is limited, but it's good, it's not memrable that's for sure but it fits when it plays. Sound Quality is high though.

Animation : As being one of the most budgeted movies to have ever been made, the animation at times felt lacking, or unpolished. I guess putting so much time on the screen doesn't always mean you'll get superior animation
as well.

As much as I wanted to give this higher I just cannot, there are too many flaws, per say. But it's a good watch I recommend watching this to every Haruhi fan or Hater you'll get a somewhat decent experience off of it.

If there is such thing as the perfect movie, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is it.
The main protagonist, Kyon, has to make the most difficult decision of his life. Does he want to live in a world with aliens, time travelers, and espers, or does he want to live a normal high school life.
To watch this movie, you must watch the first two Seasons of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Anyways, the art that is shown in this movie is beautiful, the plot is purely original, the characters are like real people.
If you enjoyed the Haruhi Suzumiya anime series, imagine the series 5 times better, that's just how amazing ... this movie is.

From my point of view, everything in this movie is in fact outstanding, and I feel that I am usually a tough grader. I have probably seen Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu, or The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, roughly 5 times since the first English sub version was available to me. For the sake of organization, I will go over the various categories that I have rated, (Story, Art, Sound, Character, Enjoyment, Overall-- in that order) and why I gave this wonderful movie a perfect score.

Beginning with the story aspect, I will confess, it wont be nearly as enjoyable to those who decide to watch ... the movie without having seen the previous series or have read the light novels. The background knowledge I feel is necessary to fully enjoy the story elements in the movie. I gave it a ten out of ten for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the rising action in the story is well placed; as well as being diverse in the types of action received. "The Disappearance" however, is not an action packed film; but unlike the series that precedes it, it definitely presents us with a deeper story that we can only be compared to a few select moments in the series. Secondly, the climax is wonderful, and the ending is beautiful and unforgettable. The story-telling narrative told through the main character is also a asset to the unraveling of the plot. Overall, the plot of the story is intricate and interesting, with an emotional supplement without being messy or confusing.

To enhance the story that our dear author Nagaru Tanigawa has bestow upon us, is the brilliant visual art that really plays in the background to the movie. Honestly, there is nothing wrong with the art, but there isn't very much to take note on. The animation is extremely smooth, there nothing that would upset or deter anyone. If anything the art amplifies the story. The emotions of the characters portrayed and the seasonal effects (as it takes place in December) are good examples of the movie's art elevating the story elements and assimilating our consciousness into the setting of the film.

While good art is important, the sound of the movie is absolutely fantastic. The orchestrated pieces bring the emotions to life. The voice acting cast is top grade (the Japanese voices). I gave this a ten out of ten because I love a narrative in a story, and the Haruhi Series has one of the best narratives I have seen; and the movie is no exception. The only thing I could say I was unsure of at first, would be the song at the end, but now I am convinced that the lacking of instruments in that track are supplemental to the nature of the story.

Perhaps the backbone to supporting the story, are the lovable characters. There are five main characters who are quite unique in their own regard, and they are well developed in previous installments of the Haruhi series. The movie even furthers develops some of the characters. The mental psyche of Kyon and Nagato specifically are well explored in this film and will delight fans of both characters. However, the title character plays little role in this film, which is slightly regrettable, but it does not subtract from the awesomeness of this film.

The final 'critique' section would be enjoyment. If you haven't guessed by now, I thoroughly enjoy Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu. Even knowing the ending doesn't deter me from watching it over and over again--but I will reiterate what I said in the beginning of the review: Without seeing the previous installments of the series, the movie will not be nearly as enjoyable; many parts will be confusing, the suspense will be wasted. I would suggest not watching it otherwise. My enjoyment of this movie is snowballed with my love of the characters from when I was first introduced into them when I first started watching the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I could then infer that if you didn't like the previous series, you might not enjoy the movie as much as I did. Still, keep in mind that the movie is less antics from the SoS brigade and more of a misadventure for Kyon, with the central character being Nagato.

To conclude this review, I would say that I have referenced the previous series far too much--which may fall in the category of commenting on other anime. However I insist that knowledge of such a series is important to fully enjoy this film, and I think most people would agree. I may have laxed a bit on the aspects of enjoyment, and a more thorough review could have been submitted. I tried to be concise in this review with a fair number of reasons without spilling out random facts all over the place. This may be the best display of the Haruhi characters to date. This film makes up for the horrendous Endless Eight, bringing us a segment in the Haruhi series that will be cherished as one of the greatest anime series films ever made.

I don't usually write reviews and thus, don't have much experience in that.
I loved the Disappearance so much, that I decided to express my admiration in a review.
First time I watched this anime I didn’t know about Melancholy TV series, so I couldn’t fully enjoy it, however, I found it very beautiful and entertaining. That is how my “Haruhi spree” began. I watched all 28 episodes of melancholy twice in a row (except endless eight of course ^^). Then I could finally see the Disappearance in its full glory. The voices, visuals, characters are just marvelous. When it comes to music and ... soundtracks I can’t imagine better choice than, say, Erik Satie’s Gymnopédie No.1 or Itsumo no fuukei which seamlessly complement already perfect graphics. And all of those things together provide a unique atmosphere that makes you watch it over and over again, makes you feel immersed in that world, so you never want to leave it.
One of the most memorable moments is (spoiler) when Kyon first time sees Haruhi in a changed world, how Haruhi show up, and how Kyon reacts. I guess those are my favorite minutes of Disappearance.
I totally recommend you this anime, regardless of your preferences.

I had finally finished watching " The Melencholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" or MHS for short and I had arrived at the movie wondering if it would actually contribute more to the story and I wasn't really sure what to expect, so this is how it turned out.

Story:
Kyon, our main protagonist lives in a world where aliens, time travelers, and espers exist do in large part to his classmate Haruhi who is basically god but has no idea on the matter, so Kyon's world is a little weird until one day he wakes up and finds that the world has completely changed into regular normal world ... where nothing weird happens and Haruhi is no where to be found and no one has any memory of her even existing.

Impression:
To get this off my chest this is one of my favorite movies in general, but if you haven't seen the series first you might feel a little left out of things because of the whole attachment to the characters the series establishes but I have heard of people that enjoyed it without seeing the series but most people will tell you to watch the series first which is a con because it makes going and watching this all the more complicated so all I'm going to say for that is the movie has more of a full effect when you watch the series first, the choice on how you want to watch it is totally up to you.
As for the movie it's self, well when you get to the end you feel like you have been taken for a ride, maybe not a hugely adrenaline filled action ride but a ride, though the movie is nearly 3 hours long and they really pack some detail into this movie, the actual story doesn't start until about 15 minutes in, and through out the movie a lot happens, it's probably an hour before the story picks up.
Now the good side of this is that the movie really establishes what is going on and not a single moment is really wasted however some people may get a little bored with it, I'm not sure who but I'm just putting that out there.
As far as writing goes this movie does not disappoint and does not leave any plot holes even when some of the plot involves time travel which is hard to write about. Another thing that this movie does well over the series is character development, a lot of the characters go through some serious development which isn't seen much in the series.
As far as the Art and animation is concerned, Kyoto animation goes a few steps further to make everything have that cinematic feel which is to be expected from a film.
The only bad thing about this film which could be counted as a good thing is the fact that it makes you want to see more, even though it could count as a good conclusion to the series I still know there is more that happens after wards but none of that really effects the film it's self.

Sound:
MHS has alway's had a good soundtrack though I never really liked the first opening for the series which is what they used at the beginning of the movie but that aside the sound track kind of reminded me of the soundtrack from "Forest Gump" which isn't even an anime but it had the same feeling, but the soundtrack does it's job at telling you that this is a good movie.

Characters:
Like I said before there is a lot of character development in this movie and if it's not character development it's at least explores more into the characters.
Kyon of course develops through the story which I won't spoil, however there is also Nagato who is usually seen to be the emotionless machine like character but in this movie you get to see an alternate version who is more or less shy and timid book worm but it was kind of fun to see her like that as almost a new character.
There is one character that I defiantly liked the return of and that was Asakura, MHS's only real antagonist, I won't go into what all she does but you do get to see her as a normal person but eventually she becomes the main element of what is one of my favorite scenes in film history.
Other than that you get to see a lot of the characters through a different filter though some do remain the same like Kozomi who sits in the background smiling about how much he doesn't give a shit, but I kind of would have liked to have seen more of him develop but I digress.
As far as characters go in this movie, there weren't many weak points.

Sub vs. Dub
I tend to lead more towards the dub on this one mostly out of necessity but also MHS's dub is considered to be one of the greatest dubs of all time, that doesn't necessarily mean that the sub is bad the Japanese does hold up pretty well though now that I watch it, the japanese just feels out of place to me, but if I were to say one thing I liked out of the sub was kozomi's voice, I kinda like both to be honest with this character because they are both so different, I english he has a light voice and he speaks in a sophisticated manor while in Japanese he had a deeper voice that made every thing he said sound important which in the series it was but thats just me.
Now I can't really tell you which version to but I can tell what quality they are, many people would recommend watching in english (including me) but It's hard to really stack up how good the sub is, because for the most part it sounds like the emotion in the sub is placed in the same way the english is which feels kinda weird.

Final Verdict:
I will give this a 9 out of 10
this was a great movie and I would definitely recommend it.

Watching the TV episodes got my hopes really down for this anime. Honestly,I was devising a really mean review that would give its writer a bad flu; but the movie proved me wrong. If you really want to enjoy this movie, then I suggest you endure through the about 25 episodes in which you will sometimes feel anger and frustration towards some of the characters. But, trust me, you will forget about that when you watch the movie.
I can't really say much about the story in the movie without spoiling it and as it is a continuation to the TV episodes. However, a thing or ... two can be said about the TV episodes. As I mentioned earlier you need to be patient through the episodes. I have considered, not once, about dropping the show and I think people who are accustomed to shonen anime will feel me on this. I think around 15 to 20 episodes would have sufficed for the whole plot in those two seasons. For example in that endless eight episodes , it feels likes filler episodes have been taken to a whole new level (friendly advice, just watch two episodes and fast forward through the rest or just skip them).
Nevertheless, every minute of this 2-hour movie is worth watching; it explains the whole plot and premise of the anime without making its audience lose interest.

I can't be the only one that was surprised that this amazing movie came from Haruhi Suzumiya. The series isn't bad, but this movie is so much better. The storytelling is a lot more dark and complex than the usual Haruhi series. It starts out only a little more dark (due to it being winter) and the beginning is what you would expect from the usual Haruhi episode, but the rest of the movie is completely different. The atmosphere is totally changed from the show, and it is a welcomed change, as it fits this sci-fi time travel story like a glove. The story can get really complex and confusing, especially if you aren't paying close attention. This was the first and only time this series has ever confused me, and I was glad. I didn't know what was gonna happen next, and kept me at the edge of my seat, something the series could not accomplish in 100 years. (34/35)

You got tons of character development in this: everyone from Kyon, to Koizumi, to God herself all get some important and needed development. The two characters that get the most are easily Kyon and Nagato. This movie explores what Kyon really thinks about the SOS Brigade, now that he is given that chance to go back and be normal again. Sure, most people would kill to be in his position, as they always seem to be having fun, but Kyon never seems to like his life all that much. Nagato is surprisingly human in this movie, and we get to know a lot more about all the mysteries surrounding her. (33/35)

Unsurprisingly the music is great, as is the rest of the movie. It was tweaked to fit the movie's darker atmosphere better and did a pretty good job. (13/15)
The dub is also pretty good, I suggest you try it before trying the sub.

Since we are still talking about Kyoto Ani here, the animation is top notch, an some of their best work to date. Fluid, good looking, pretty much everything you come to expect from a blockbuster movie like this. (14/15)

This was an amazing movie and easily one of my favorites. The only reason it isn't 100% perfect is because the series is not as good and you sort of have to watch the series to appreciate the film. Some characters might get on your nerves, like Mikuru.

Where to begin? This film is an adaptation of the light novel of the same name. The animation here is completely and utterly beautiful. They not only managed to adapt the entire book without cutting anything, they added in a few places. In a good way. They turn a certain character's existential argument that lasted 1-2 pages in the book into a 5 minute 'battle in the mind' scene. And I loved it. The voice work here is top notch, and the range some of the actors show is far beyond what they did in the show. This movie, for me, is the pinnacle of ... the franchise. Not only is it the best thing in the anime, it might be one of my favorite animated movies ever. A small warning though: this movie is 2 hours and 44 minutes long. If you do not like long movie, don't watch this. Personally, I like longer movies more than shorter ones. This movie is great, and it comes highly recommended from yours truly.
