Makaryuudo Demon Hunter

First of all, this is a short anime with size of one standard episode, so there's not much to say here.

This is a pretty simple and standard horror OVA of its time, without any extremes in any aspect. Almost nothing stands out either in a good or bad way. The visuals are good, atmosphere is fine, the characters are there, some standard plot about "hunting demons" is also there, some action and gore are also there, in general, nothing special, but all these ingredients are "cooked" well together. The only thing that stand out in this anime is a little unique appearance of the ... main character (like her a lot) and the design of those small flying monsters.

In summary, this OVA is too short to leave any emotional trace or even just to be remembered, but it's high-quality enough to be a nice tasty "snack" for one evening for enjoyers of old anime.

This short OVA is good and nice for its time, but it definitely feels rushed. The story doesn’t really take its time to build tension or flesh out its characters. Instead, it often skips straight into action, with the protagonist singlehandedly slaying demons left and right. The animation is what you’d expect from its era—not groundbreaking, but gritty enough to complement the horror themes. The soundtrack and overall tone also contribute to its dark charm.

If you’re into short, retro horror-action OVAs and don’t mind a story that feels a bit rushed, Makai Yuudo: Demon Hunter is worth checking out. It’s a nice piece of anime history that shows how supernatural horror was imagined at the time, even if it leaves you wishing for a more fleshed-out series.

This little one-shot OVA is totally weaksauce. Awful on so many levels.

Yama is not your average high school girl. She has secretly been sent from the underworld in order to fight eeeeeeevil! The overall premise is sort of cliched, especially when compared against many similar type of anime OVAs and movies that flooded the market at around the same time. But all those other shows must have sucked up all the talent, because they must have had the B-team (or maybe even the C-team) of writers and animators working on this.

The ... quality of the artwork and the clunky animation are sub-par to the point where it noticeably detracts from the viewing experience. You are stuck watching how terrible the key animators are at staying on model (the amount of 'right-hand bias' is staggering), to pay attention to the story. But, then again, there's not exactly much of a coherent story to pay attention to.

If you're going to watch this, do it for the laffs. Because if you want a cute demon-fighting tsundere warrior, there's many other anime to choose from that are miles better than this.
