MUSHOKU TENSEI IS THE ANSWER

[So, a quick disclaimer, I like this show, so if you think that because of that my opinion is invalid, kindly piss off]

If you don’t care about the controversy and are only interested in my simple opinion on the second season alone, you can skip all the way down to THE SIMPLE REVIEW. However, if you do that and still feel like attacking me for some reason, please read the following text first, maybe that already answers your question(s).

It is rare that you find a show to be the center of as much debate as Mushoku Tensei. No, that wouldn’t be right, you can hardly ... call monkeys flinging sh*t at each other a debate. There are negative aspects that I think are well worth being criticized. But for some reason everyone got so stuck on an overall pretty simple to discuss “flaw”, that they either failed to accept that this show is indeed able to tell a compelling story or were so taken over by that single thing that they can’t even begin to see anything but that.
Look, I am going to make this as simple as possible. If you don’t like this show, that is completely normal, it practically tries to make you hate its main character in an openly disgusting way, and if that puts you off, that is okay. It isn’t just me saying this, I have never even once heard a fan of this show claim that you have to like it or anything. What really gets me, though, are those people that think, that because I watch this show, I am a pedophile or whatever. There are so many things that you can watch this show for, but not once have I actually met someone that deliberately decided to watch this show entirely because the Protagonist is a groomer.

With that out of the way, we can firstly get to the necessary stuff before finally getting to the interesting bit of reviewing season two in the context of the overall narrative.
Do you notice how insane that last sentence sounds? You made me do that, so please, just chill the f*ck out when someone just doesn’t like the same things you do.

The necessary stuff: This should be obvious, if you don’t get this, maybe start reading the subtitles. Rudeus is meant to be as disgusting as he is. I have argued with so many people that just didn’t get that this is intentional. And I am not saying that the “fan service” is intentional, that would be the case with pretty much every Ecchi-Anime, what I am saying is, that it is intentional, that the fan service is uncomfortable and that Rudeus is a weirdo. He is not meant to be a good guy. These are not the depraved fantasies of the author. If you think that something that Rudeus does is detestable, then you are right, because it is not meant to be the right thing. Are you going to call out Attack on Titan for “advocating” genocide? If your answer to that question is yes, please seek help, but if your answer is as expected a clear no, then I have to ask you what your problem with Mushoku is? Well….

The Problem with Mushoku: You remember how I said that there are negative aspects that are well worth being criticized? Well, here we go: Mushoku Tensei has fan service… Yes. That is what we are attacking the show for. Fan service isn’t a new thing, the issue is that the characters that are being sexualized are children and yes, that very much is an issue. I don’t really care, because it is filtered through the perspective of Rudeus and really not as bad as what people make it sound like (Have you seen like any trigger show). BUT, and I must say, that’s a pretty big BUT, you can be offended by that, and if you are, I am not going to judge you for walking away from the show. Hell, I would even defend you, if that was your opinion. It only becomes a problem, when you start blaming the show for not being something you like. This is especially an issue for Mushoku, because it already had it hard to even be taken seriously, that is how much the recent history of Isekai has squandered its appeal. I know that I am repeating myself, but I am going to say it once again, if this show isn’t your thing, nobody is going to attack you for that. The problem here is that habit of needing to justify your opinion, no matter how miniscule it is. I am not going to call you a racist if you don’t wanna date a person with a different skin color, this only becomes an issue if you start saying that this is an objective problem, because, listen up buddy, it is not. There are objective flaws that can turn you away from a story, but this is not one of them. You wouldn’t call out Breaking Bad because you find it morally wrong that they are dealing with meth, right?

Okay, I think we are finally done with this. If you felt like all of that was unnecessary, you clearly have never had an argument with a certain clown whose name I am not going to mention, simply because they don’t deserve it. Either way, after all that, I can finally give my simple thoughts on Mushoku Tensei's second season, without having all that on the back of my mind.

THE SIMPLE REVIEW:

New setting, new characters, new everything. Is it all as good as season one? Probably not, but it is really quite impressive how diverse this show is in its setting and tone.

Speaking of tone, we have a small step-down in atmosphere and world building. Season two quits the opening format of the first season after three episodes and replaces it with a simple anime opening. To make this clear, the opening is a banger and is amazing when compared to other anime, but then again, this show was exceptional from the start. In short, I miss the old openings, but the new one slaps. I also feel like there is a small step-down when it comes to the overall production value of the show, but it is more so a step-down from season 1 part 2. If season 2 part 2 is going to be awesome again, is something we will have to see, but this is still on the incredibly high production standard of season 1s first part.

Now, the story, this is going to be a bit difficult. The story is incredibly character rich, but it feels a bit directionless after the first three episodes. A lot of the stuff that seems like filler might just be set up for later seasons, either way, I feel like they could have done a better job moving the overall narrative. As it stands right now, season 2 feels incredibly disconnected from what came before it. There are a lot of plot threads that got picked up again and some were even wrapped together, but the mayor stuff has been entirely sidelined. Primarily, the Dead-End party has been entirely removed from the cast for this season and his been replaced with a similarly colorful but, overall, just shallow cast of students. Look, I like most of these guys, well, I would probably hate them if I ever met them, but they are a lot of fun to watch, a bit like Power really. And with that, we get to the big problem. If you don’t like these characters and especially are not interested in the redemption of Rudeus, this season is not only going to not change that, but it will probably bore you to death. This is why I must emphasize that I like this show, a lot actually, but it only really works if you have been immersed throughout the first season to such a degree that you want to see this tale be told.

A great season, but not one that stands out, that is what I am going to call it. I love it, but I am just some guy on the internet, so if you don’t, I’m okay with that. I have heard some crazy things about part 2 and I hope that I can be back in half a year to take every bit of criticism back, because this show truly deservers all the praise it is getting, even if it is fundamentally flawed.

Edit [15.04.2024]: Hi diddly do fellow neighbor, it appears that this is far and beyond, like completely unlike everything else, totally, without doubt, absolutely the most average thing I ever wrote. I just wanted to apologize for the whole debate part, I was having a lot of discussions with people about this stuff at the time, and while I still have the same position, I can't ignore how poor I argued my position, a few of the things further up are just straight up bullshit, and I am sorry, for underselling an industry-wide problem that we should not just silently accept.

As time passed, I felt empty as one of my favorite shows of 2021 ended its run with a bittersweet ending, yet I couldn't help but want more of Mushoku Tensei. Well, everything changed when the Bind nation announced an actual trailer for the 2nd season of Mushoku Tensei, coming with 2 cours. As the 1st cour has come to an end, I have nothing to say other than the feeling of satisfaction and happiness not a lot of shows can manage to evoke that same feeling. This 2nd season has come again to refill the dark void in my soul once again.

Unlike the 1st ... season which was filled with twists and surprises where Rudeus is thrown into a situation, let it be disturbing, challenging, annoying, or even sometimes amusing to watch, the 2nd season starts off subtly (or easy to say, pretty slow), not with Rudy magically knowing what to do or has a lofty goal to pursue after the end of Season 1. The character is lost, left with no purpose, and easily described, as just a dead man walking, waiting for change. This not only is in effect for the plot, but the comedy, drama, and ecchi have been a lot less obvious and more subtle. There are still moments of ecchi that happen here and there throughout this course. Still, even then, it's usually either censored or less visibly shown unlike the previous season's ridiculous amount of fanservice that were present in here. I'm not promising the anime has less fanservice, if you were already grossed out by it in the 1st season, you won't like this one either.

If there was a demerit this season had, the production value has seen itself a downgrade from its previous season. This means characters are less expressive and don't move much with the exception of its action sequences, which only last long enough to fuel dramatic tension. There are still moments of incredible animation, but not enough to make any action memorable that happened in this season. However, even with the downgrade, we still have characters that receive development and get meaningful moments without being forced or convoluted.

The divided attention between support and pure hatred for Rudeus continues to this day, thanks to the inner dark voice lying deep inside his head. I mean, it's hard to empathize with a man in a growing body to have such lewd thoughts, but the story, at the end of the day, has always been Rudeus' redemption for becoming a better person. We've seen countless proofs of how he's a disgusting human with excruciatingly low self-esteem and confidence, but even then, he still has the conscience to know he needs to be better, even if he's chasing the most stupid goals. And he still acts on it to improve himself, even if he needs others to back him up.

One thing that has remained consistent throughout the series has been the characters, even for characters you never see in this season, you still get mentions or see some implication of other characters (or love interests), it showcases the impacts these characters have on the narrative. The dialogues along with Rudeus' darker monologues to back with his choice of words have always been my favorite part of Mushoku Tensei. I realize how its well-written characters make a story good along with incredible voice acting from the cast. It may not have the brilliant visuals or fantastic fighting sequences to be gazed upon, but it still proves to be a good sequel for my favorite anime.

The detailed and logically cohesive universe sets it apart from many others ... in the anime genre. From the geopolitical intricacies of the regions to the nuanced responses and behavior of the characters, everything in Mushoku Tensei has been meticulously crafted. This attention to detail fosters a profound connection with the characters, allowing for deep empathy and understanding.It is as if I'm watching animation of an extremely well written fantasy novel.

Mushoku Tensei sets itself apart from conventional anime by eschewing the stereotypical "cool" main character who invariably does the right thing. Instead, the protagonist of Mushoku Tensei exhibits traits more akin to a realistic individual, complete with personal flaws and complexity. The narrative further diverges from traditional patterns by refraining from introducing generic, overpowered villains only to be defeated by sudden, unexplained power-ups. Instead, it focuses on adventures and quests within an intricately crafted fantasy world, devoid of clear and obvious villains or objectives.

This approach has resulted in a mixed reception; some viewers, expecting a more typical isekai experience, find themselves disappointed and unable to recognize the innovation and distinctiveness that Mushoku Tensei brings to the genre. Their expectations are challenged by a story that seeks to redefine conventional norms, potentially leading to an underappreciation of its true greatness and uniqueness.

Mushoku Tensei is arguably the best isekai anime of all time at least at the moment of this review. It is considered almost as a father of the isekai genre since it's light novel pioneered the genre even though the anime is a recent one. Most isekai anime are really stereotypical with bland character and plots however mushoku has an amazing level of writing put into every aspect of the story and characters.

Plot: the story is simply amazing constantly keeping the viewers curiosity and the world building throughout the story is immaculate and fits perfectly with the story. The plot for this season might seem ... a bit slow for people when comparing to season 1 but that is because the season focused mainly on introducing and developing characters, even though this season might seem drastically different than the others in terms of plot it was non the less very well written, very enjoyable, and progressed the story answering several questions brought up at the start of the show. If you watched the season and think the plot was lackluster you either only care for flashy action scenes and cool fights, nothing wrong with that everyone got their tastes, or you didn't understand the plot as a whole. I could go on and explain the whole plot but I want all my reviews to be spoiler free so I'll leave it at that.

Art: The art in the show is notably worse than the first season but that doesn't mean it is bad, the first season had top-notch animations and this season got a bit of a downgrade to above average graphics which are more than enough for what this season and it's plot demanded; as I already said this season was not action packed so there was no need to go all out on animation so having it still be very good to the point where no one would find the show less enjoyable due to lackluster graphics but not going all out especially if that means more budget for future more action packed seasons.

Sound: The various sounds effects for the magics and fights were as per usual of the show good and nothing seemed out of place, the opening was really good and sets the mood perfectly for each episode, the ending was a bit worse than the opening in my opinion but still enjoyable and the voice acting was also above average. Mothing much to highlight on this section but nothing also to criticize.

Characters: As I said before this season's focus was mainly set on introducing and developing certain characters and it did exactly that. Rudeus had an amazing development both physically and mentally, working though some more of his past traumas and working to better himself in general; this season also highlights sylphie and greatly develops her character where after season 1 you simply new here as Rudeus's childhood friend whom he taught magic to now you have a better grasp as who sylphie is as a character and her personality; Besides these two we get introduced to several characters like Nanahoshi who most likely will play a vital role in future seasons and we got to see again both zanoba and cliff whom I think will also be important for the future plot points of the show.

Overall: In general this season was great to just sit back relax and watch the characters flourish with some amazing writing and good animations, this season also pushed the comedic aspect more than the previous ones being a notably much less serious season within the show but from my point of view this doesn't in any way affect negatively the anime as we still had some amazing character development and more importantly some questions answered and even more questions formed.

P.S. This anime can get a bit weird at times especially in the "ecchi" department, but this season specifically had a bunch of controversy around it and cancelation attempts which I find to be utter nonsense, the main complaint for this was due to the slavery part and yes we get it slavery is bad the anime didn't depict it as being good. I don't understand nor do I want to understand what goes on in people's minds to try this with every single show that doesn't follow the norm enjoy it for what it is or simply don't watch it; for example on every single episode on crunchroll there would be comments insulting the anime... if you hate it so much what are you doing in the comment section for episode 10 of the second season?

How miserable must your life be to go out of your way to hate this anime when it's by far the best adaptation to drop in the past decade of shitslop? I'm looking at the 10/10 rates on the completed lists of some of these negative reviewers and they actually think asspull shows like Dragon Ball and Dr.Stone are perfect where a dude literally punches an entire pack of lions to death and people are being cured of death itself by bat shit. Might as well remove the review section all together because it's worthless and gives people missing their frontal lobe a platform.

Jobless Reincarnation is an anime that I really enjoy watching. While watching this new season, I asked myself over and over again the exact reason for this.

The answer was simple: it has an impressive narrative. It's hard to explain, but for some reason, you never feel bored. You enjoy every moment. It's almost therapeutic.

In this new season, we follow the adventures of the protagonist after the abandonment he suffered by his beloved Eris.

Now, broken and without a real desire to live, Rudeus must find himself, revalue himself as a man and as a person, and find new reasons to live.

The above would be the summary ... of what happens in these first 12 chapters. It is mainly a spiritual search of the protagonist to recover his pride and desire to continue living.

What is really surprising is that there is little progress in the development of the story. There is only one chapter where there are interesting advances about the mystery of who the protagonist is and why he is in that world.

However, it seems that the main plot can wait, because what is the use of advancing in the main plot if the protagonist is spiritually lost?

In conclusion, the continuation of Jobless Reincarnation is undoubtedly a pleasant reunion with this magical world and its protagonist. Don't expect significant progress in the story, however, the personal follow-up that is made to the protagonist's emotions is so beautiful and so deep that you really enjoy each chapter.

Highly recommended for fans. Non-fans, if they enjoy life-reunion and magical arts anime, will find a new universe that will undoubtedly motivate them to watch the story from the beginning.

THE GOOD: A great narrative. Almost spiritual.

THE BAD: Very little progress to the main plot. One can't help but feel stuck.

I AM NOT READY to judge this second season. We must wait for the final chapters.

All episodes till now have been very humorous/entertaining while the slow pace of the first episodes may be a little frustrating it’s definitely just prepped foreshadowing along with the chieftain twins to prepare the story further give it time and you’ll enjoy it by the end they didn’t start the show with a bang more a thud possibly a plop the later parts will show rudeus maturing alongside sylphy this is definitely a cliched school arc but all scenes of mutual studying alone have an immense amount of chemistry along with zanobas passion for sculpting he’s a perfect fit for the bff role his love ... for art is infectious and his scene of apology got a little tear out of me just genuinely sympathized as someone who’s had things broken. with a twist of rudeus having his returning to school a point of contention in his previous life while his feelings of attraction are misplaced at the moment this is a confusing time for Rudy as his last school days began with a sense of unease and egoism plus horny this is a whole new difference of confusion as he can’t experience that same excitement twice but now that he’s confident in other things we’ll begin to see an err of judgment of strength soon but as a first time reviewer please accept my apology if this isn’t helpful I’m gonna stay hyped for this because hey you gotta save the budget where you can next season’s budget is gonna go so high if we just keep strong in supporting this

I will say that throughout the series it is not the most action packed, but it is definitely hilarious by far. It starts out slow in the beginning, however once it gets into school life it really starts to show how Rudeus is both getting over trauma while still being hysterical. I will say the infamous explicit side of this series isn’t as bad as the first season was, but be aware this guy is still a horn ball. Also another thing that is a make or break for people is basically how there is no real plot progression, however I think it makes it ... up for by introducing new characters to the plot and one of my favorite starting characters that finally comes back (if you don’t know who I am talking about, don’t worry, you’ll enjoy her a lot). I won’t say this season is for everyone, but I definitely enjoyed the shojo side of it all and can’t wait for Part 2 in 2024!

Not as good as season 1 and dont wanna say much but still great. Sylphy was great and we got introduced to some great characters important for the future. The animation quality did drop due to the staff changing but they still did a good job and they animated the characters nicely except for maybe some mishaps and wonky moments but still good. Much didnt happen in terms of action but actually very important part of the story. It did rush more but cant really blame anyone for this due to the preparation for upcoming next part of the season.The echie part has decreased a ... little bit and the charcacters are defenitely more mature. Anyway great enjoyed now waiting for part 2

Mushoku Tensei II: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu was a really fun ride despite the slower pace this took from previous seasons. I liked that this was more character focused even if I found there to be less standout moments than previous iterations. Was really cool to see a few reveals as this went on and I thought the rather goofy overarching character moment of this season worked kinda well lol.

The animation was stellar as usual and it was exciting to see Rudeus' development as the episodes went on, it seems next season will push the story much further which is super hype and I can't ... wait. Overall this was a good continuation!

There's only one way I can explain Season 2 of Mushoku Tensei. If season 1 was about the exposition and the battles, the the true essences of season 2, is love! Rudy endeavors to move beyond his former love, wrestles and stumbles with newfound affections, all in the pursuit of unraveling what love truly signifies to him. Ultimately, he discovers love at long last.

This season was an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. I was in awe by the character designs and their evolving personalities. Despite its fantasy scene, the characters exude a genuine humanity, flaws and all. The attention to detail in creating ... and describing situations is a standout aspect, making these seemingly otherworldly characters more relatable in comparison to other Iseakis. Objectively speaking, it excels in every aspect you'd say when seeing an A+ tier story, aside from its exceptional characters. The pacing, particularly in the initial episodes of season 1, where we witness the main character's infancy, maintains a steady and engaging flow. Although slow in some parts, it makes up for it.

One standout quality is how the story handles its morally questionable main character. The overarching theme of transformation and personal growth shines through, most notably in the protagonist's growing disdain for his former selfᅳa clear indication of significant change. The evolution feels natural, with occasional reminders of his origins and imperfections despite the substantial development he undergoes.

Moving into the latter part of the season, new characters like the endearing Fitz are introduced, and the interactions between Rudeus and Fitz are some of the most heartfelt moments in the series. Fitz's perspective resolves a previous concern about characters sounding too similar to Rudeus. Overall, the burgeoning relationship between characters is portrayed genuinely, with mutual affection blossoming.

This first cour surpassed my expectations. It elicited moments that genuinely took my breath away, perhaps due to my heightened empathy at the time. I already believed it couldn't get any better, fearing an inevitable downturn, but I hope the story won't veer into overly grim territory. I prefer my slice-of-life romance with intermittent plot development, and this series strikes that balance perfectly. The writing style and the character's thought process align precisely with what I desireᅳnot overly explicit, not excessively sanitized, not overly naive, yet not omniscient either. I am genuinely content at this moment.

All in all, Mushoku Tensei remains a must-watch for of connoisseurs of the isekai genre. Considering its enduring popularity even seven years after the light novel's initial release, it's hard to envision it losing its appeal. To those uncertain about the series, trust in your own judgment. Your viewpoint is entirely valid. While I may not see flaws in Mushoku Tensei, I respect those who do, and I hope for reciprocal understanding. It's a divisive series, but one infused with love and passion, and that's what makes it a masterpiece.

This season got me to buy and read the Light Novels.

And I do not regret it.

As for the adaptation itself, it is missing some important information that is told in the LNs, however the manga also misses quite a bit so it is fair for the anime to follow the manga I guess.

I'm really happy with the quality, the music and the story.

Storywise this season is not everyone's cup of tea since it is not fully action packed, however it is still neccessary for the development of the series.

As for the animation quality, it is not AS GOOD AS the previous seasons, ... but that's only because it has less action and less sakuga moments compared to them. The important scenes are still very beutifully animated. The only thing is it has a weird grain-like filter to give some sort of an effect which makes the quality look worse but in reality I think it is a nice touch for the environment. I am not entirely sure if the previous seasons had this but I don't think so? (I just checked and it's always been there!)

Overall, I am pretty sure most of the people will enjoy it and maybe some will decide to pick up the manga or the LNs like I did (important note: the manga is not too far ahead of the anime so if you really want to see how the story unfolds you will have to read the light novels or the web novel)

Erectile Dysfunctional.

Mushoku Tensei is back and… better(?) than ever.
Compared to the masterful first season, the Magic Academy arc is where some of the cracks in the writing start to show. I don’t need to tell you that the art and animation are superb again because this is a studio Bind production and the studio was literally founded to adapt Mushoku Tensei, but if you’re expecting beautifully animated sword and sorcery anime battles well, you’ll get a few of those, but you might be a bit disappointed.

This arc takes a completely different pace as Rudeus struggles to come to terms with his loneliness due ... to Eris’ abandonment and rejection at the end of the first season. After a small relationship with a new party member, Rudeus discovers he has erectile dysfunction and enters a magical academy to study in the hopes of finding a cure so he could pipe with his pickled pecker once more.

As insanely stupid as the premise sounds the way Rudeus processes ED at first hits shockingly close to home with nearly all men (whether they admit it or not). Popular media likes to portray ED as comical and even berates men who suffer from it as the punch line of a joke. In reality, it's an embarrassing and humiliating thing for a man to suffer through which can be exacerbated depending on the partner. Not only did I like how Rudy handled or failed to handle ED was quite grounded considering he is still metaphorically and literally a man-child during this arc of the story, but I also liked how we see two different and clear parallels between two different partners on the receiving end of his adolescence. One takes it personally and scolds him which feeds into his inferiority complex. The other tells him it's okay and tries to help him find a solution. I appreciate this story's commitment towards unravelling and unveiling unfortunate truths about the toxic masculine condition through Rudeus’s character and how unspoken social taboos men follow like not talking about your feelings or uncomfortable subjects like ED hold people back from being the best person they can be.

Of course, ED isn't the only thing happening in Rudeus’s life. Whilst attending the academy he runs into his childhood friend Sylphiette disguised as a man for reasons you’ll know if you watched the special prequel episode that aired before the season and a slow-burn homosexual (for Rudeus) surprisingly sweet friendship and romance ensues. Actually, I like all the students we’re introduced to. The cast is wide and varied in shapes, sizes personalities and are surprisingly charming when they’re bouncing off Rudeus. We also get some long-held questions about the teleportation incident answered as well as more interesting trivia about the world.

Unfortunately, there is one episode where the writing got way too big for its boots and that was the episode when Rudeus compares his former life to that of a slave girl. Not only is it grossly arrogant for a 21st-century neet who grew up in a society without one of if not the worst crimes against humanity in our world history to compare his former life to one who has had all family, freedoms and humanity taken away presumingly by force, but we have another isekai where our main character participates and is personally involved in the transitional practice of slavery. At least nothing sexually implied happens with the little slave girl thank Christ.
There were some other scenes too that had me raising my brow. One involves Rudeus kidnapping two female students because they insulted his “Goddess”, and leaves them in his room whilst he works out what to do with them only to come back to discover they’ve pissed themselves wetter than transphob whining about pronouns in Starfield.

The second season doesn't quite hit the same level of excellence as the first. This arc is completely different to the one before, but the (mostly) good writing is there and it will leave you engrossed, uncomfortable and enamoured with Mushoku Tensei’s world and characters. It’s still not a show for everyone, especially if you can't stomach light novel isekai anime bollocks, but it's still one of the best isekai out there and I’m looking forward to part 2.

As a Light Novel (LN) reader, this part was done really well. Knowing all the things that would happen and understanding what's going to be happening next made it all the better. It was amazing how all the content from the Depressed Magician Arc/Mid Rank Adventure to the University arc and now with the start of this new arc, fit so well into twelve episodes. Now, as for where the show left off, 'Mushoku Tensei II' concluded, in my opinion, in an amazing way. The climax of the university arc hit everyone as it did, putting a bow on one of the lows of Rudeus's ... life and keeping us on the edge of our seats for what's next. With the shocking reveal that concluded this season, All I can say is this did an excellent job setting up all the things that are going to be happening in the next season and cant wait for season two part two to release in all its glory.




Review for People locked in a rubber room, with rats, and rats make them crazy

- Arcs (Depressed PP Magician/Mideus adventure arc to "Am I Gay?" university arc) was pretty poggers fit in 12 episodes nicely
- Climaxing in the climax of the arc and Rudeus talking about a waifu??? (I mean gotta catch them all I guess)
- I come from the future (Def not a LN reader) so I know the next arc gonna be extra super hot fire so the set up is pretty hot for the next arc

Once I started watching this Part 1 of Season 2, I was reminded of how good Mushoku Tensei is. I knew I had enjoyed both parts of the first season, but I didn't really remember why. Yet immediately upon starting the second season I was hooked once again.

Let me start off by saying that this season was different in some ways from the first, primarily in tone and amount of action. Viewers who watched Mushoku Tensei primarily for the action, adventuring and magic may feel somewhat betrayed by this season's content. Instead, there is a focus on the characters and their relationships with one another.

I ... enjoyed both arcs this part had to offer - they were filled with emotions, personal problems, mental health issues and tense dialogue. We witnessed reflection, soul-searching and self-growth for a main character who suffers from deep-seated issues from his previous life. I mentioned in my review of the first season that I felt some of the main character's mental health issues were resolved way too easily. This time around, I feel like the pacing and journey were much more on point in that regard. It was much more realistic and had its ups and downs.

I was not expecting to feel so many emotions while watching this part of Mushoku Tensei. The emotional beats were satisfying and in my experience it is very rare for an anime to get the atmosphere and sense of realism so right. I was quite touched by this season.

Aside from the character development, most of the other elements were done as well as one might imagine. The visuals were all good and the sound effects and music were fine, too. In fact, one particular element of the usage of background music really stood out to me. I remember are two tense dialogue scenes where the music was gone completely. And I found that this enhanced the viewer's tension during those conversations immensely. I already felt quite invested in what was happening, but that was the icing on the cake.

But not everything is roses and sunshine. Even though I haven't read the source material, some parts of the anime felt rushed and certain transitions were quite sudden. And of course there are a few stupid misunderstandings in dialogue and/or behavior that felt forced and frustrating.

In any case, I had a really good time with this part of season 2 of Mushoku Tensei. I am even considering starting the light novel as a result.

There are countless words that can describe the Mushoku Tensei franchise. But perhaps 'controversial' is one of the more fitting ways as Mushoku Tensei has some rather mature themes compared to other modern animated isekai. This isn't breaking news because for fans and the returning audience, this series has been known to take risks. At the center of that is Rudeus, a young man who is self-conscious with a complex moral compass. With a set of 13 episodes, this season is no short of controversy yet is also a colorful addition to its franchise.

First of all, I want to just throw this in and say ... that you must accept Rudeus' presence in this show whether you absolutely despise him for his personality, actions, or his morals. He's in every episode and we follow his journey across the Mushoku Tensei world from harsh outdoor landscapes to an advanced magical academy. Being the protagonist, Rudeus can draw in some negative attention for his inner narratives and high libido. While he has matured since the first season, it seems the past has affected him greatly especially since Eris left him after they did the deed. When watching the first few episodes, we see that Rudeus lost part of his mojo and charisma. He's not as carefree and seemingly has no real goal ahead of him. Sure, he has the idea of finding Zenith in his mind but having being abandoned by Eris truly affected his mental state. It is not until he joins the Counter Arrow party where he finds his place and slowly, his mental state improves. Throughout those moments, we see how Rudeus bonds with their members, gradually evolving from an outside stranger to a trusted friend. The most prominent relationship among them is Rudeus and Sara, the latter having a similar personality comparable to Eris. The season teases their relationship and attempts to take it to the next level but all this was more of facade. Nonetheless, Rudeus realizes that he is his own enemy and strives to improve himself as a person.

The University Arc in the second half of the show feels like a restart for Rudeus. It was his chance to become a better person by learning magic, making new friends, and moving on from the past. It's also there when he meets the mysterious Fitts who holds some secrets of their own. Reuniting with Zanoba also bought a feeling of nostalgia and he begins to see the world in a better light. The more episodes this season aired, the more we see how some characters have fragile personalities. In particular, Fitts' real identity is very obvious to the audience but she struggles to find the courage to reveal herself to Rudeus. It is until much later that she realizes her true feelings. Nonetheless, feelings are somewhat a bit ambigiously delivered in this show. One particular instance felt rushed such as Elinalise when she "falls" for Cliff with almost no buildup or development. Establishing characters in this anime should be the most basic norm yet some are just thrown into our face. On the other hand, the anime does take care at building Rudeu's character into a more likable protagonist. He still has some of traits from the older days but in this season, he's matured into a better person fitting of his age and personality.

Now, you may be asking yourself if Mushoku Tensei is trying to get across some sort of message to us. Is it trying to make us like Rudeus as a character more? The better question to ask instead is whether you should enjoy this season for the content it prepared. At a fundamental level, the season does improve in almost every aspect in terms of storytelling compared to the previous. The first few episodes wanted us to experience what a character is like after being abandoned. Rudeus' response to being abandoned by Eris is actually very normal and relatable. Furthermore, the anime had to take a deeper dive into his character for redemption. They didn't want to assassinate Rudeus' personality but at the same time, they wanted us to experience what he's been through. Quite frankly, they were able to protray his character in the most human possible, or at least someone of his age. Given Rudeus' background origins, he felt even more lonely and vulnerable to being abandoned. It is not until he discovers more meaning in life and hope that he gets back on his feet.

Similar to the previous season, Mushoku Tensei retains its witty dialogue usage and character expressions. Rudeus is less expressive compared before but the anime doesn't shy on showing his emotions when given the chance. This is most evident when he's paired with a female characters. I won't get too much into the controversial content but let's say that Rudeus is still a healthy boy who isn't shy about trying to have sex. To keep it less rated R this season, there's no explicit scenes and for character reasons too. Think about it, Mushoku Tensei had suggestive content since day one so none of them should really be a surprise.

They say controversy create cash and that's no further from the truth when it's about this franchise. The second season may be less explicit but that doesn't mean it's absent of mature material. However, I would say this season is an improvement compared to the previous for it managed to get us invested into Rudeus' human journey, a journey that he endures about discovering himself and being able to realize his purpose again in life. Let's just hope the next season builds on this even more.

Now that Volume 7 of the LN has been completed on the anime, there are still a lot of surprises in store, even if I had hoped for greater emotional intensity.

The story has unexpected turns that keep readers interested, even if some scenes were rushed..

Rudeus did a fantastic job at bringing the character to life. Though, that I was looking forward to the red worm storyline and wish they had given it more time to shine rather than cramming it into only three episodes.

Despite these minor hurdles, I can't wait to see what the following episodes have in store. I'm eager to see how ... the magical world of Mushoku Tensei develops as it continues to enchant me.

Despite the whole beating around the bush simulator thing I did like the course this first cour of Mushoko Tensei season 2 took, and although everyone's arms are sore and can't lift up anymore I'm at least happy with the outcome of the most painful and wince educing teenage romantic comedy someone can watch in the 21st century. If that all sounds somewhat bitter-suit that's because it is.
First things first, I have to give credit where credit is due, this is not the first time Mushoku Tensei decided to take an unpredictable path when compared to its counterparts. There is a true commitment ... to make the most realistic portrayal of a used-to-be-loser who has to reconcile his previous and current lives problems, even if at the cost of the patience and good will of some viewers, I know a lot of anime fans can't help but feel annoyed when issues that seem solved previously resurface again, but that's just how life is. Here things are even worse, after our boy Rude had just lost his virginity on the previous season I expected a slight more confident slight less awkward protagonist going for the big leagues and doing some crazy magic vfx, but nothing could be farther from the truth, being unable to maintain even his sense of humor we get a few years of slump. I had only pity and contempt for the guy.
At this point we get on all that was not great about Mushoku Tensei, the first few episodes feel extremely dry and hard to warm up to, yes it is winter, but our monotone directionless protagonist seems to be accompanied by a likewise direction which makes the few emotional highs and battles climax which could remedy some of that fall flat on their feet. A good direction can save a lackluster animation: emphasis on facial expressions and va on emotional moments, a variety of interesting angles on battle scenes with lower budget and dialogue-heavy scenes, all of this was lacking in this cour.
So, would I recommend you watch it? I can only speak for myself when I say yes, but I'm also someone that don't mind the tone of the humor used here, if that's something that might throw you off I would say do not watch it and save the world the possible creation of dozen of topics complaining about it.

The Best Isekai Returns (or Maybe Not)

This part of the story happens to be somewhat slow, although, compared to the rest of the work, it comes across as a welcomed respite.

As for Rudeus, I appreciate the significant development in his character. He now acts with more sensibility and less impulsivity, which might be attributed to his peculiar erectile dysfunction xd

It's nice to see Sylphie again, although her role as a man in the plot raises some questions. Why didn't she reveal her identity from the beginning? xdd

Regarding the other characters introduced in this section, they are rather well-executed. They contribute just enough to the plot ... without deviating from their purpose, ensuring they leave a lasting impression.

The animation in this part is adequate, although the quality of the artwork in some scenes raises certain doubts.

The music in this season is outstanding. Finally, we have an opening that perfectly encapsulates the essence of this point in the series, making it, in my opinion, one of the best of the year. The ending is also good, in line with those of the previous seasons. The internal tracks remain the same as always, without any particular standout.

In summary, even though this segment is somewhat slow, it feels like a necessary part of the story. Highly recommended
