Group of youkai (and a human girl that happened to be dragged into it) clash with other youkai that cause troubles for humans. Both of these are episodical show that are remakes of much older vintage anime.

They both have "Small main characters" fighting ghost.

Kitaro doesn't get as dark or as horror as Junji Ito stories do but both still supernatural and spooky style anime

Both Gegege no Kitarou and Akuma-Kun are adaptations of Shigeru Mizuki's works. Both have a goregeous art style that compliment the horror themes and tone. Despite Gegege 2018 being more kids oriented, with Akuma-Kun being much more gruesome and violent in tone, both have themes of death and human desires.

Both follow an emotionless main guy who's a supernatural/semi-human creature with one eyed covered and a main girl with a very human feel to them and a lack of understanding to the supernatural things around her. They're both episodic which, most of the time, tackle some kind of heavy themes and topics, but they still have a nice message at the end of the day. The only real difference here is that kitaro has more episodes and different kinds of topics and themes to tackle.

Horror? ✓ Comedy? ✓ Tear-jerker? ✓ Toei at their peak? ✓ Comedy/horror is such a rare combination of genres that somehow mix to make something that stands out above the rest. It's something where I honestly couldn't explain why the two work together so well, they just do, and while I've always had a hatred for Toei, they seem to do this genre mix so perfectly. Gegege no Kitaro (2018) and Jigoku Sensei Nube are two anime that take this genre combo, and make my two favorite comedy/horror anime of all time, with some of the most memorable characters, facing off against all sorts of yokai that westerners like  read more

While these shows don't have anything in common plot-wise, they have a similar origin: they're both manga from the 60s and 70s that got a "modernizing" reboot in 2018. "Modernizing" because while the story, characters, and pacing are kept untouched, they're both re-set to our days, updating also the conflicts and the criticism made to society to make it match with today's problems.

Both shows involve "spirits" and souls as the main component of the show.

Story about a one-eyed protagonist of supernatural origin, his family and his interraction with humans.

Both shows are modern adaptations of older manga that involve a human fighting youkai with the help of another youkai.

Both are reboots of classic anime with macabre atmospheres and social satire.

Both have a lot similarities on the series: the main character are youkai, they're exterminating youkai(s) that have been too exaggerated on their (youkai) task. Based on appearing, they'll appear some time at afternoon-evening, AND THE MAIN CHARA ARE SHOTA. :V But the differences, there's plenty of them; - The place plot: GeGeGe is kinda random, but Hanako-kun is only on school. - Weapons for exterminate? I think so - And some of them that categorized as spoiler ._.

Both shows have the similar atmosphere and mood to them. (Not so surprising since both shows are animated by Toei Animation) Both shows follow the monster of the week formula where both digimon and yokai actions cause casualties to humans, some which eventually become fatal.
