Uchuu Senkan Tiramisù (Space Battleship Tiramisu)

Subaru Ichinose loves his cockpit as, to him, it's like being in his mother's womb. Whenever he struggles to converse with his fellow pilots, his cockpit is the one place he can be alone. As the ace pilot aboard the Tiramisu, Earth Union's most important battleship, it is his job to defend Mother Earth from the threats that emerge from humanity's extended dominion spreading throughout the vast reaches of the universe.

Armed with his personal mecha Durandal, Subaru must fend off encroaching foreign colonies as he struggles to protect his personal sanctuary from rogue fried pork skewers, suffocating backwards shirts, and unsolicited redecorations. In the year Space Age 0156, the fate of humanity rests entirely in his hands.

I was sent this anime randomly today. I expected some boring crap that took itself far too seriously. I was very bored and just wanted something to watch. Anything would do.

And then

BAM!! This was sent to me and boy do I not regret binging on this and ignoring all of the other responsibilities that I need to do right now.

This anime had me legit CRYING and screaming because I am an emotionally unstable drama queen. I felt so well represented by these beautiful characters.

Story: 8 The stories are episodic and make no sense whatsoever and I LOVED them.

Tiramisù begins as a rather aimless compilation of comedic skits that range from pretty damn hilarious to mildly chuckle-inducing; it ends pretty much the same way. The disappointing part is that somewhere in the middle they toyed around with introducing something reminiscent of an actual plot.I was genuinely interested to see what the show had to offer following the mid-season story developments. Unfortunately, the crew never quite figured out what to do with it.

Mixed Feelings

Space Battleship Tiramisu has gone beyond parody into the realm of sheer absurdism. While it draws from all space opera anime, its heaviest influence is clearly Gundam. Everything from the pilots, their idiotic space sense, the contrived conflict, to even the premise of their war is parodying basically every Gundam anime.

The show has its funny moments, but its hard to say they are truly great comedy. Tiramisu's comedic timing and bathos is competently executed but its hard to give it more than that. It lampoons the Gundam plots and premise by taking them to the extreme, but sadly its never their logical extreme. The ... show is never quite a parody where the comedy is made from demonstrating the insanity of fully stretching out sci-fi tropes and concepts. Rather it gets most of its laughs from outright insane exaggeration, or by collapsing seemingly serious sci-fi in a juxtaposition to inane modern life elements that persist in the future. Some of jokes are even exceedingly dumb things like all the characters having names of car brands. To be honest, it is pretty funny to think about, but for clearly solely absurdist reasons.

None of its humour is smart, but then again its not intended to be. It would be unfair to decry Tiramisu as mediocre because it does not leverage its sci-fi concepts. While it may not be anywhere near as good as parodies like Spaceballs, it is solidly done from an absurdist angle. On the other hand, it cannot help but feel like massive missed potential. If the show were to make light out of things science fiction glosses over or the true insanity/melodrama of science fiction plots, then it would have parody humour. Without that, there is only so much bathos can do for a show. It cannot stand out if its comedy lacks a unique element that ties it to the setting.

While this does get solid laughs, and there are some particularly good jokes, much of it just feels like it is using its absurdism as a crutch. Its hard to demand much more from such a short show, but it also feels like its sci-fi elements become nothing more than trappings. Unlike other shows with a longer run time or different premise, it is also hard to demand anything from the characters. They are largely lampooning Gundam's contrived character relations and sometimes shallow motivations. In that sense, it feels the show hamstrung itself on a character level and never compensated by having great comedy on a conceptual level.

Overall, I found it to personally be a 5.5 to a weak 6 out of 10. Its mainly because I enjoy sci-fi to the point where I can find an absurdist take on it to be entertaining for the sake of it. Objectively it is closer to a 5 since none of its comedy is born inherently from effectively parodying sci-fi premises which would make it a truly great show. If you are in to science fiction then this is a pretty good, fast watch that can easily justify the time it takes. Otherwise, it would be preferable to watch a comedy show in a genre that is more personally appealing.
