In this modern society, a new kind of "illness" is striking young boys and girls. Loneliness, disbelief, and outrage push this generation to grow more and more attached to internet and technologies. The experts call these symptoms "Net Addiction." To cure this condition, a certain rehabilitation facility has been set up to "lead the young men back to the right path." Enrolled to treat his addiction, Hibiki had no idea that this rehabilitation facility is nothing more than a prison. In this hellish place where escape is prohibited, how will Hibiki overcome his despair?
Alright, Evil or Live is not nearly as bad as the MAL score would suggest. Yes, the art is poor quality, but the budget is obviously very low.
Despite its relatively low quality, I've been enjoying it quite a bit.
It’s a show that has gotten a lot of hate because people went into it expecting a horror, rightfully so given the genre that MAL listed. But it’s not a horror, it’s a comedy that tries to scare you with an absurdly dramatized interpretation of the modern internet-addicted youth.
If you’re able to look at all of the horrible things that the internet does to teenagers
and chuckle, then Evil or Live is for you. It’s a crude sort of humor that takes jabs at teens who are addicted to the internet.
Parents send their awful internet obsessed children to boot camp to break their bad habits. Evil or Live’s concept is scary and exists in the real world, but here it is delivered with the subtlety of a jackhammer which deflates the seriousness. A concept like this one would in most cases create a very edgy show, but there is so much absurdist humor injected in that I never took it seriously.
The show's initial conceit may seem scary but it isn't, Evil or Live is just a goofy show dressed to look like a dark thriller.
Evil or Live mocks teenagers who are addicted to the internet through its ridiculously exaggerated characters, which is funny but I can’t help but feel like I fall into that area as well.
The main character is portrayed as a video game addicted teen who can barely look at a woman without getting hot and bothered. In the first few episodes, he sees the world through childlike eyes but due to the harsh boot camp he's been thrust in he goes through a wildly drastic change.
Right from the get-go the main character, Hibiki is established as unstable and incapable of functioning normally in society, it’s played to a borderline comedic effect. In fact, his first line in the camp is “I’ve traveled to a game world!” which immediately alienates the viewer from him.
Despite the main character being an asshole I can’t say I have a problem with the way he’s written.
So far the show has offered a more and more ridiculous scenario each episode and I haven't seen any signs of it stopping.
The visuals are serviceable, decent enough to comprehend what is going on, but in no way outstanding. Evil or Live a show about what's said more than what's seen, it is not about the art. I wouldn't say it's good art,
even though it gets its job done well. Sometimes it changes its style with varying degrees of success.
The characters are often poorly animated, which typically adds to the comedic effect.
Each character has a voice that feels very appropriate, while the actual voice actors sound mostly like amateurs I think they fit their roles quite well and sell the tone the show is aiming for.
The op is edgy but I like it, it's not as edgy as Ousama Game's op. The ed is weirdly calming for a show about teenagers getting beat up at their parent's request.
Very funny and dynamic. In the first four episodes, we've seen multiple scenarios of overblown interpretations of internet addicts. The script tries to make the characters seem like internet addicts, but it always comes off as hilariously overdone. Occasionally the show will choose edginess over humor but in these situations, it’s hard to tell if we’re meant to take it seriously due to such poor animation quality and a comedically bad script. Moments like those are rare in the first four episode but they have become a bit overbearing in episodes 5+6.
Provisional Score: 7.2/10
I haven't seen a show that I've liked so much more than the average score since Mayoiga, that was also a comedy which was wrongfully advertised as a horror. Perhaps Haoliners thought that Evil or Live would get more attention if it was marketed as a horror, but it's so much more enjoyable as a comedy.
Don’t sell it short just because of its weak presentation, there is a very enjoyable show here. If the show sticks to what it does best, humor with very little seriousness, it will be a great watch.
In this anime, it's about content or form. To me content is far more important than form. Because form stimulates your emotional response while content stimulate your logical/rational response. It's about thinking what is happening in this anime(to be able to see point) and not how it looks like, are characters pretty or not are they moving super smooth with great visual effects of fighting each other.
*** I have to mention, also that story is taken from real life scenario, where teens are placed in internet addiction camp in China, and there is even involved death from multiple external injuries.
If you want create awesome/the best/most
popular anime you must to balance these two. But I Always look towards content especially for low budget Animes. And I think you should too. People writing that everything is bad and being serious, is not appropriate. People only cares how it looks or form of it. And not what it's trying to tell.
This anime had very good potential but because wrong community started to rate this anime and flagged it as Bad One. That is why I am writing this, I would like from you people to admire more content especially for low budget production. Imagine how hard is for author even to release Anime Version of manga/light novel. And then people ruin it , very easily.
Sad true is that community always admire style/form more than content.
Tried to enjoy this show and see what lies at the end of it, but I couldn't. I don't know why people are giving this show anything over a six honestly. Everything about this show is "off" and doesn't fit.
The character is an internet junkie and socially awkward but can handle himself in combat and charm others to his side? The sound and the voice acting doesn't fix the character expressions, the art tries to be serious and a cheap man chibi when funny, and I don't know why this show wants to be widescreen with black bars on the bottom and top. It
feels like this show wants to be edgy and cool in a "hey look at me, I wear a trenchcoat and sunglasses at night" way.
The only thing that kept me going was the story. A world that internet addiction is a disease and there is a military school to fix them is fascinating. A power struggle between students and facility to rule the school. But again, it feels like it is trying too hard to be cool.
Honestly, this anime isn't at all what the reviews would suggest and I found it rather enjoyable. It's getting shit on because people had thought of it as a psychological thriller/horror but if anything this is a dark comedy. Stay woke my fellow weebs this isn't a shit show at all.
Story (8) - I like the whole idea of parents sending their internet-addicted children off to this hell. It's really modern and conceivable. But if you were to take in only that what the introduction gives you, you'll be pleasantly disappointed. Because like I stated at first this is a dark comedy IMO
and not a psychological thriller. For the most part, the show is still beginning and that can really make or break the show for now. I'm really looking forward to what direction it takes.
Art (7) - The art is expected of an anime of its degree. Nothing too flashy it's pretty plain but the story really makes up for its lack of uniqueness.
Sound/Music (7) - Like the art it's pretty plain and is what is expected from an anime of its degree. Respectable but that's really all there is to it. Oh, wait I almost forgot, the main character's laugh is really annoying and despicable.
Character (5) - The characters are probably the downfall of this anime, with lack of realism and their shitty attitude it's laughable. Hibiki is honestly a really unlikeable main character and I find more enjoyment and Kudo and his ignorant ass.
Enjoyment/Overall (7) - It's fine. That's all there is to it. It isn't as bad as it's said to be. It still has a chance to do wonders however and I sorta look forward it's next couple episodes.
