In the year 2025, automatons dubbed the Kikou suddenly appear and attack human beings, leaving many cities completely devastated. Human civilization is left in the ruin, but debris of a Kikou is then found in Japan. A research facility named Tokyo Kikou Institute (Toukigen) is established to investigate the Kikou's weaponry. Following the proverb "use poison to defeat poison," using Kikou to defeat Kikou appears to be mankind's last hope. Nine years later, a new weapon named the Muttsu is created from the research, and it is almost ready for use in live combat. A boy, Rin Sagami, and a girl, Yuzuru Midou, are chosen to ride the Muttsu. They are entrusted with the hopes for the future of mankind, but they face the mission with courage. However, what awaits the two is a cruel fate.

This little mantra really caught my attention: "Lets make the Mech shows we want to watch!"

Is it possible? Could it be? A mech show that doesn't care about genre conventions or 'Gundam Guidelines'?
well... no... not really.

You see, to this day I'm still not really sure what Rebirth Storage was trying to be; taken as a first episode, absolutely everything went wrong after the show's cold open. Taken as a preview, I'd say they crammed in WAY too much of the wrong information.
I couldn't shake the feeling that the entire episode felt like one of those mid-season "recap episodes" that nobody really cares read more

This OVA was based on a novel idea that was expressed pretty well in its opening thesis

"lets make the Mech shows we want to watch"

Unfortunately it does poorly in its execution of this idea.

It tries to cram a 12 or even 24 episode season's worth of ideas and info into a SINGLE episode, and ends up messing up pretty badly.

The characters themselves seemed decent to fairly interesting, but they were ruined by trying develop them in a one-episode story, and the sound/animation were both pretty stock.

The usage of energy-based plasma aliens and a dimension jumping sword turned me off like an EMP.

The one amazing read more

~Overall 5/10. A spectacular adaption in the mecha genre, only it was an entire story with developed plot, characters, ect put into a single episode.

Where did we come from? Who are we? Where will we go?
This is the basic premise that the anime will leave off on, and, in all honesty, it probably has at least 1/3 to do with the story. Though I do see the relevance.

There were c l e a r inspirations from NeonGen and Eureka 7
&, just sayin

~Story 8/10. The story in this case was pretty dang interesting, The creators stated "Let's Make the Mecha Shows we Want to read more

This tv special anime has a very high potential if given a chance to make it a proper tv series. I daresay that the creators concept of "Let's make the Mecha shows we want to watch!", barring executive meddling, would have fully realize in this anime project; shame that it hasn't been greenlit to become a full-fledge anime series.

Why did I say that? Several reasons which I have listed below:

1) FeMC - okay not quite "main character' but the main pilot, which equates main character in a mecha show, is a girl.

2) No romance (a rarity in mecha shows) - the two pilots acts as read more
