Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo

It was very beautiful. I love watching movies about science fiction and romance. I really liked the characters and the relationship between them. I always smiled while watching. It was really great to be able to time travel. I think the second part should definitely come (if it comes, it would be great), I want to see more of the relationship between the characters. It's hard to say without spoilers, you have to watch it and you won't regret it <33333 (uh but I was really expecting a little more between chia ** and ma *** so I was a little offended.

Jumping into the past is cool, but it's no DeLorean.

Story:
I love time travel stories. BttF, Chrono Trigger, Bill & Ted,...I seem to enjoy them all. That said, the concept is nothing new and has been done a million times, so to get youself noticed, you need to give it your own little twist. So, did this movie manage to pull that off? Well...a bit. The way time travelling is used casually here has been done before, same goes for the butterfly effect (I know that's not the right term, but you know what I mean). But the way the movie slowly shifts from harmless fun ... into drama works very well. In terms of pacing, this is wonderfully done. A big issue with stories like these is the huge potential for plot holes, but it avoids that as well. That's not saying there are none, but nothing major. Still, for it to be truly outstanding, I miss a little innovation.

I have to say, I am not a big fan of this artstyle. It took me some time to get used to it, but once I was, I greatly enjoyed it. The scenery was wonderful and the motions were flawless and good-looking. I also liked the character design (again, besides not being into this style). This is the one thing movies will (probably) always have over series and it really shows here.

The voice acting was absolutely solid, though it misses a truly outstanding performance. The music was fitting and not abstracting, which works well with the movie. Not much else I can say.

Characters:
Makoto is a very relatable character. Who wouldn't think of their own enjoyment first after discovering you could time travel with (apparently) no consequences? As soon as she learns how her actions negatively affect others, she tries to correct everything, trusting in her time travel abilities, realizing too late that she only made it worse in the process. All her actions and decicions are realistic, making her a great main character. Everybody else seems to be just...there. Not that it hurts the movie, they were going for realistic people apparently. I didn't really get into Chiaki however. I didn't really understand his motives and the plot twist kinda came out of nowhere.

Enjoyment:
I get bored easily by movies. If they don't grab me early on, they will most likely become background noise while I do something else. The Girl who leapt through Time (I tried to avoid spelling that out the best I could) managed to entertain me through its whole length. That's impressive, as not much happens for most of the time. I think it depends on how much you can get into Makoto or not. She is the focus of 95% of this movie. I liked her, so for me, the movie works. I wouldn't want to see it 10 more times, but I can safely say that my time was not wasted at all.

A very good story line, the whole &quot;I did something wrong that I have to fix it&quot; didn't come till later. And there are a lot of funny moments. Over all it is a really great story line.

Definitely top natch for 2006. Everything looks very realistic. Unlike a lot animes that looks just plain unreal. It is very eye catching.

Sound~
Not much to say but all the voice sounds very very real.

Character~
... I have to say the character are not as good as I wanted. But they also looks very real. There aren't a lot of exaggeration of emotion.

Just a great movie, One of the best I have ever seen, the only movie I know that's better is Princess Mononoke.

What would you do if you had the ability to leap backwards through time? Makoto Konno gained that ability and she used it right for the personals issues. But what if you prevent something from happening? How many times does she had to go back so she could finally realize that &quot;time waits no one&quot;?.

A beautiful anime with great story. I strongly recommend it!

Was there a time in your life that you want to go back and probably change the actions that you've done? The heroine of the story, Makoto Konno, can actually leapt through time and return to the past. She got her power by accident in the Science room of their school.

The animation of this movie may not be the best, but I can say that the story is one of the best. There are scenes that were repeated a couple of times (because of the leaping) but didn't appear to be boring. It just shows how the time leaping affects others ... which results to various consequences. You can also enjoy the movie by its very calming insert (Kawaranai Mono) and ending (Garnet) songs both sung by Hanako Oku.

What's good in this animated movie is the message it conveys to the audience. It shows how important time is. This will also make you laugh and cry.

Certainly, the creators did a very good job in this movie. So watch this movie now because as the movie says, Time waits for no one.

I added this to my anime list, and a few days later I found myself in gamesman (my local anime dealer) and to my surprise, a copy sat on the shelve in front of me, I decided right then and there, knowing very little about it, that I was not leaving the store without it.

And boy, was that a great decision.

The girl who leapt through time tells the tale of a young girl who gains the ability to literally leap through time. At first she uses it for her own needs, but eventually she takes on the problems of everyone around her, bearing the weight ... of the world on her shoulders, until it all comes crashing down around her.

I really enjoyed this movie because I felt the actions being depicted on the screen, I couldn't take my eyes away, the first anime where I didn't hit stop until ALL the credits had finished rolling. Everything from the sound and art style to the storyline help draw the viewer into this beautiful tale of friendship, romance and morality.

A true 99 minutes of perfection.

"Time stands still for no one"

I just watched this movie and it was amazing! It was as amazing as Miyazaki Directed Films. Very beautiful plot, and awesome characters. It was a very touching film. The movie overall is awesome, though you might find the ending quite unexpected and odd. But you will love the movie.

STORY:
Follows the life of a high school student named Makoto. With her 2 best friends and a normal everyday life until she somehow got the power to Time Leap. She uses the abilty to time leap for life purposes, Romance, Friendship, School, you name it.

The good/great:
- Beautiful artwork, especially the breathtaking scenery.
- Powerful story. Not many movies can string together a tight plot with this sci-fi topic (I won't spoil what it is). It's very well crafted.
- Relationships... It is a love story at heart, and a very moving one at that.
- Characters. I found the protagonist especially likeable.
- Creative and not cliche in its execution of fundamental concepts.

The bad:
- I'm not a huge fan of the character design style, but that's more personal taste than a true flaw of the production.
- That it had to end! Wish they would make a series out of it... :)

Conclusion: It's thrilling, mysterious, beautiful and moving. Definitely check this movie out!

This is not a review, rather just a short comment about the movie.
Pros :
+ The art. Beautiful and eye-catching.
+ The characters. They are well written and well voiced.
+ The development of the plot. Each character develops well enough throughout the story.
+ The soundtracks. Very well composed.

Cons :
- The way the story ended. I just don't like that kind of hanging ending.

The story has high re-watch value. Also, the quote in the movie "time waits for no one" left a deep impact on me.

Honestly I've seen other movies in 2017- and anime movies such as Kimi no wa. But this one is underrated and I've never seen it come up through any social media feed but Im glad I found this movie.

Analysis:

The story I gave is 10, reason being is that the atmosphere transition between the slice of life, humour, and the things that revolved on a average last year student to the explored details of time leap and the consequences that revolved around it makes the story at its best- transitioning to a little darker atmosphere and forcing you to think carefully on your own to understand ... how the story is evolving (It's not too complicated but you will understand once you reach near the end). The story was well established and explained through the main protagonist.

The characters were well developed although Kousuke Tsuda was less developed compared to the two but still played an important factor in the story. The other two was very developed- this is simply because they less generic and explored different views on time leap and how well they transition through the two sides of the plot and the change in personality according to the change in objective of the plot

Writing this review immediately after finishing the movie.

With regards to Art and Animation, I simply cannot get over how beautiful this anime is. All the scenes look absolutely stunning and the attention to detail in them is crazy: everything from the various objects in the rooms to the writings on the blackboards in the school settings. It truly looks like you are looking at snapshots of an entire world. I was especially impressed by the background characters and the way they all feel like they have real lives behind them. I love the backgrounds in this anime.
The animation is similarly impressive: the character’s movements look ... very human and expertly done.
Needless to say, I am blown away in this department. Many scenes are easily wallpaper material and the anime is, without a doubt, right up there with Makoto Shinkai’s works. It’s worth noting that it’s a 2006 anime, too: the art is quite before its time.
Art: 10/10

I am very impressed with the sound too. It’s got excellent surround-sound audio which is great for immersion. The use of sound (or the lack thereof) to compound many of the scenes was effective too.
The songs themselves in the anime were pretty good but not anything amazing (but they don’t have to be). The ED was pretty good - good enough to keep me around right through the credits - and nice, fitting lyrics to tie off the anime too.
Oh, also, the voice acting was quite good - no problems here.

The characters have behave quite realistically - including the side characters too, which results in quite realistic depictions of many settings. The school settings in particular were especially refreshing in comparison to many other anime.
Of course the character progression can’t be compared to that a good full series may have, but it was very solid regardless.
Character: 9/10

While I recognise that this kind of time-travel -> learn about consequences kind of premise isn’t that unique, “cliche” never crossed my mind. It managed to get me hyped cause of the whole ‘going back in time and living life to the fullest’ kind of thing and the romance aspect was good too.
Story: 8/10

Because of the attention to detail I mentioned earlier, settings such as the domestic ones had a nice warm vibe to them. Also, there were some very powerful scenes in there.
Enjoyment: 9/10

The main character's development throughout the story is hands down one of the best I've seen in any show. I find Makoto's character similar to Okabe's from Steins;Gate, using the gained ability for egoistical purposes only to realize that it brought only suffering, and that is exactly what makes her human. I love how Makoto is genuine and friendly yet a bit impulsive and egoistical.

The plot was somehow predictable (except the ending), still amazingly enjoyable, deep and original. It is not easy to make a time-travel show with basically no plot hole (at least I couldn't find any, except Makoto's extraordinary speed in a certain ... scene, but I think that could be justified in some way). Also, the plot was very clearly driven by the character and not viceversa, which is something I find important. I give the plot a 9/10 and the character and easy 10/10.

I like the other characters as well, the "pure" relationship between Makoto and her friends and how simple yet round their characters are.

The graphics are really some high quality stuff. The animation is steadily fluid and the art is so clean and detailed. I subjectively love Hosoda's style despite some find his drawing style unbeautiful. It deserves a 9/10.

I didn't pay enough attention to the soundtrack, even though it felt nice and fitting. I guess I should give the original soundtrack album a try. Spontaneously, it sounded like traditional japanese music adapted in a modern way, a mixture of new age and contemporary music. For now I give it an 7/10, could potentially get higher ranking.

Overall a wonderful film, I'd recommend it to almost everyone, the pacing is initially slow but gets eventually faster in the second half (another similarity with Steins;Gate). One of Hosoda and Madhouse's best works. I give it an overall 9/10.

[STORY] (9/10)
I feel like The girl who leapt through time isn't exactly a "story anime", although it shares its iconical traits. Good animation, highschool setting, lots of sunsets, identity troubles, romance... It's almost too standard, in some sense. But here's where lies a notch of originality. Time travel, which isn't exactly original per se, gets thrown in the mix and revolts the plot from the ground up. All of a sudden everything either goes extremly smoothly or tremendously wrong: for a short while Makoto is able to dodge even death, but it isn't long before the thread tangles up. Micro-stories begin but never finish, or ... they finish so many times it's like they never began, destinies are swapped and put back in their places so rapidly nobody can tell which end is the head and which is the tail. And it's not a coincidence the whole plot suffers from the same illness. Ever since we're explained how time travel came to be, it becomes unclear when the story actually started; was it with Makoto's death? Was it in the science room? Was it in the future? Or maybe... In the past? Towards the end, Makoto's aunt is revealed to have had similar experiences as her niece, way too many, such that one can't but wonder: "are they the same person? Is she past Makoto who traveled back through time and camouflaged as her own aunt?". But then you realize that's not possible, that Makoto never met herself during the on-screen travels, so her aunt must've loved another time traveler, as the photo on her shelf suggests. Finally the story ends, but only so to speak, cause all we're left with is an unlikely promise: what the future holds, we may never know.

On a surface level the story, although well told, looks quite average and a little approximative with its explanations, but at a closer look you can notice how it's really just a big knotty “what if”. "What if I'd known...?", how many times have you had that thought? Well, this anime brilliantly shows that such a question is meaningless, that even if you could know it wouldn’t make a difference. Even if you could time travel and know exactly what would happen, there would always be a bigger “what if” behind the corner, and that the more you turn it the bigger it gets. There’s only one possible answer: courage. Embrace the unknown of the present and whatever it holds, let it discover you, and only then you will find your true life path. After all, time waits for no one!

CONCLUSION: great low-intensity mind twister, but still a bit too stereothypical for a 10/10.

[CHARACTERS] (8/10)

Characters are the least original part of the movie in my opinion, being essentially a refined version of recurring highschool anime archetypes. The tomboy girl who’s clumsy and likes sports, the one friend who sticks with her ‘cause he loves her but she doesn’t realize, and the too mature and reliable guy who silently supports them. That being said, it’s true that dialogues never feel forced or cringy, they’re always coherent with the situation, and their personality is explored enough to make them credible and relatable. Since this is not as common a thing with animes, I’ll take what I can get.

CONCLUSION: Good enough for the genre, but still I’ve seen way better designs.


[ART] (8.5/10)

Although the settings and the overall atmosphere/drawings were nothing extremely original, the animation and direction of the scenes were totally on point. Time/screen swaps were always confusing enough that they would be credible, but also clear enough that you wouldn’t wanna throw your [insert preferred device] at the wall. Also, there was a subtle and graceful precision in the way characters’ depiction was swapped from detailed to just a few essential (and warped) lines, without ever hurting the on-screen flow.

CONCLUSION: Overall a pretty good product, although I feel like it could’ve achieved more

About the same goes for the sound department as well. I don’t really care about OPs, but I can say the sounds during the storyline were chosen (and discarded, when silence was needed) appropriately. The dry sound of the baseball hitting a glove, with nothing more going on, or the silence that hugged Makoto’s panting when she was terrified greatly helped my immersion.

CONCLUSION: Not spectacularly memorable, but a very good job

[ENJOYMENT] (9/10)

Overall, I really appreciated this title, mostly for the philosophical trickery hidden behind it, that kinda forced me to go back and forth between breaking and regaining immersion to see through the lines. Not the most surprising product ever, but still a pretty fun run.

Life is Strange: The Good Version is not a Ghibli-tier blockbuster. Expecting as much is the greater part my fault, though given how gorgeous some of the screenshots are, I suppose I can be forgiven for making the mistake for reasons I will detail later. The disappointment was a bit of a stumbling block for me when the cracks appeared, but I still greatly enjoyed Girl who Leapt and highly recommend it as a somewhat generic but overall vivid experience.

The premise is pretty simple; the teenaged Makoto uses her newfound time travelling ability to redo moments in an essentially mundane, highschooler life. That can arguably ... be pretty dull and unambitious, but it fits Makoto's character well. Other characters will note that Makoto is not nearly creative or resourceful enough with a power that could allow her to accomplish superhuman tasks while she's transcending Relativity to save a pudding from her sister's appetites. This, coupled the with the fact that actually activating her time leap involves literally jumping wildly into the air (and often coming down with a crash) make it believable and lighthearted. As a young adult novel-turned-movie, themes of deciding what one wants to do in maturity and romance are the main narrative drivers. At least on my end as someone who doesn't normally go in for either, both aspects were watchable and played enough off the time gimmick to keep me occupied and even hook me with a sudden and unexpected veer in the plot's direction.

Artistically the movie holds up, having understated yet stylized character designs and very consistent art style and direction. The execution can really vary, encompassing a smattering of lifelike anatomical movements, overly simplified long distance shots of characters, brilliantly flowing cartoony action, and somewhat choppy areas where a more fluid movement was either attempted or scrapped. Everything here is drawn as opposed to modelled with only some very few exceptions though, which is always a welcome sight.

Sound design is in a similar boat as the art, albeit with flatter peaks and deeper valleys. For the most part, the voice acting both doesn't stand out nor does it do anything to detract from the scenes. There is the occasional positive exception, like Makoto and the supporting male cast that's close to her speaking with realistic familiarity and chemistry. There was a lack of fidelity in other respects though, such as long lines of confirmation lacking emotional undertone to mark each iteration apart or emotional superlatives like crying or laughing not reaching the intensity the visuals imply. On top of that, I remember at least a few instances where the sound design was enough to knock me out of a moment, like during a running sequence at an emotional climax of the movie that was about 90 seconds of panting and moaning without even any background music.

Most of the issues in the above can probably be attributable to the budget being an order of magnitude lower than the standard I had in mind going in. The dents could probably have been dinged out with more time and money, though it's conceivable that such resources might not have been available for the project. All that said, the number one thing they got right and did not compromise on for so long as a blink are absolutely gorgeous painted backdrops. To be honest, the sheer quality of the backgrounds are what made screenshots I saw of the movie look so good and put me in the mindset I was sitting down to a 'Ghibli movie' by another studio. They provide an absolutely rock solid foundation to the rest of the art without being intrusive. I suppose it is counter-intuitive to lavish over beautifully rendered sets when the major and minor characters moving over top of them can really languish when not in the camera's focus, but it works here in a way that I really can't overstate. The approach is not generalizable to every project, but Girl who Leapt shows just how good a work can be when they set the right priorities and really polish them.

By all means, I exhort you to jump into The Girl who Leapt Through Time with a more open mind than me. It is a damn fine movie that I was privileged to watch and more likely than not, you'll find yourself having a good time with it too.

This is quite possibly one of the best Anime movies I've ever seen. I'm not going to give a plot summary because frankly, you can get that from the other reviewers, and from the plot summary listed above. What I am going to do is tell you why I liked this movie so much.

It gives us a rather mundane story, with a lackluster explanation (in regards to the time travel), and tells it with a light touch, filled with charm, and true emotion. These are not the stock anime characters one finds all over the place, but characters with depth that slowly ... reveal themselves organically through the storytelling, instead of us being beaten over the head like so many other anime that I can think of. I got so involved in the characters and the drama (not melodrama, but true drama handled subtly as to feel real) that the time travel seemed almost incidental. A means to explore teenage relationships, and not using teenage relationships to exploit the fun sci-fi device that is time travel.

Time travel, though literal in the story, is really used more as a thematic metaphor to explore youth, friendship, the pitfalls of one's first love, and growing into responsibility. The story isn't about a girl who learns how to travel through time, rather about a girl who learns what kind of person she wants to be and how she wants to live her life through her experiences traveling through time, albeit sometimes only one hour at a time.

It is the light touch, the ease and depth of the characters and their relationships, and the richness of their inner lives that makes this otherwise common science fiction tale glow with life. If you are looking for a film with the standard sci-fi tropes this is not the film for you, but if you're like me, and enjoy the sci-fi to be a means to an end and not the end unto itself, then you'll enjoy this movie as much as I did.

Story: The premise of this movie has been seen before, probably many times. You have the main character who discovers a way to go back in time to fix certain aspects or to prevent events from happening, something happens (usually negative) because of the constant time leaping, etc etc. Because the story line was familiar, it was pretty obvious what might happen, but something did happen that I was not expecting that's for sure.
Because this is a movie, the pacing was pretty quick. I would be curious to see how this would have played out if it was an actual series.
Sci-Fi, Adventure, and Drama were ... correctly labeled to this movie for obvious reasons. The romantic side does not fully manifest, however it does pick up steam by the end.
I found the end to be a bit disappointing, mostly because I am a hopeless romantic but it left alot to be imagined by the viewer.

Art: I became first interested in this movie because I would always see clips of it used in AMVs I would watch on YouTube. At first glance, I thought the art style was beautiful and reminded me of the movie Summer Wars. As it turns out, they are both products from the studio Madhouse.
All of the characters look like people you would see on the street which is good to see in this type of story. It made the characters more relatable, which I feel like alot of us have wanted to go back in time to fix something we screwed up.

Sound: The music was gorgeous to say the least. It made me feel like I was witnessing the greatest human creation ever. I definitely prefer instrumentals anyday.
As far as english dubbing is concerned, I feel like they could have casted someone better for the main character Makoto, but she was still pretty decent. My favorite voice was definitely Andrew Francis as Chiaki. Oooh I just love his voice :)

Characters: Again, because this is a movie and not a full fledged series, there were very little back story for anyone. The character with the most story is Chiaki and he isn't even the main character.
Like I said before, I believe a lot of us, if not all, can relate to what Makoto is thinking. Hopefully we wouldn't react so drastically, but who knows how far we would go to make something better.
The characters were pretty flat other than their friendship with each other. It felt like everyone were pawns for Makoto to play with.

Enjoyment: In all, I gave this movie a 7 out of 10. I feel like if it would have been a series, it would have gotten a better score, but it was still pretty great nonetheless. If you are a fan of anything made by Madhouse, or are a fan of time travel, this movie is for you :)

I watched this movie with high expectations from the score and the reviews I've read. I started watching it and the first thing I noticed was the art. I was in awe of how realistic it felt. Watching him bounce the basketball off the ground, or when the boy fell off his bike. It all seemed so perfect.
I admit, at times it got a tad confusing about where she was in time, but everything linked together in the end. It was pure enjoyment. This movie made me feel so many different emotions.
This has been the best anime movie I've ever seen. I recommend ... it for everyone to watch, if you don't you're missing out on one of the greatest anime masterpieces.

This was a fantastic film, great characters, fun, excitement, drama, slice of life, sadness, magic, everything that you could wish for in a film.

I really liked Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, this is mainly because of the great story. Most time leaping stories are hard to understand when and where the main character is, but this story is simple enough but still has it's depth in the story.
It is well composed, and it keeps an unexpected touch so that you don't know what is going to happen next.
The art is not the best I have seen but was well enough so that you didn't bother about it.
The characters are also very good made, all have their own personality that changes through the story.
I must say that I ... really enjoyed Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and that I recommend it to everyone who has some time and likes anime in general. It's certainly a must watch movie.

I kept hearing things about this movie, so I finally came around to watching it. On first glance, visually and stylistically, this isn't the type of stuff I'm drawn to. But within a few minutes, the art style grew on me, along with the main character.

This movie really did catch me by surprise. The movie is about....well...a girl who leapt through time. Simple, right? But instead of some cheesy time travel movie with a visit to dinosaurs and futuristic robots, this movie remained fairly realistic.

There were no character types or cliches, there were no contrived problems and overly dramatic scenarios. The characters felt ... real and very relatable. The main character is seen using her time traveling powers for silly little things, for which the consequences are later observed.

The movie had me crying, at several points. The character relationships and interaction really stuck out as the key point in this movie, and I loved it. The way everything was executed was just perfect. It's definitely a movie I will watch time and time again. a must see!!
