Bloody Date (BD) is a five minutes short film made by Nagao Takena. One of the more striking features in Takena's works is that they are done with clay. The claymation is pretty unusual, but it definitely has style. Personally, I found it pretty cool... but I’m getting out of the subject. This is Takena's fifth work, and is, at least in my humble opinion, the best (is also the most violent and graphic, so if you don't tolerate gore, you can stop reading now).

fine until, out of nowhere, a psychopath with an axe appears and smashes the boy's head, spraying brain tissue all over the poor girl. Now, not only she's single, she must run for her life... Fortunately, our heroine finds shelter in a house. But, there's no such thing as a safe place in a horror movie, so the problems of our young protagonist are far from finished...
The animation is well done. The movement is fluid, the frame rate is pretty good for, well, clay. It looks like Takena put lots of effort in this stop motion business. There are several characters, all very different from each other. All of them are well done, and some are pretty creepy, specially the axe psycho. The landscapes... are made of paper and cardboard xD. The park is very colorful and has many trees. The house where our heroine seeks refuge is a box xD. But inside there are several pieces of furniture that are pretty detailed... there are even paintings in the walls (drawn with markers). So, the interiors were a nice touch.
The sound... well, this is a silent film, so no voices (there are dialogs, both in english and japanese. Faithfull to the silent movie style, there are no subtitles: the screen goes black for a few seconds for the reading, and then the action returns). We have music, though. At first, when everything is nice and dandy, we have quite music (sounds like a xylophone... or a keyboard... don't really know), and it become more intense in the violent parts, or in the chases. The music was correct in general, but I think the work in Bloody Night (another Takena work) was better. The sound effects can be present or not: we don't hear when the characters knock the door, but we hear when they shut it. Details n_n.
To conclude this, I recommend this short to people who like horror. There's an interesting amount of blood and dismemberment here, so if you don't like gore, stay away. To give an idea, the amount of clay-violence here is similar to Celebrity Deathmatch. I also recommend this to people without prejudice who want to see something new because, like I said earlier, claymation is not very abundant. And in addition to its original visuals, one of the strengths of BD is its story: for a five minutes horror short, the story is very good, and has a really interesting ending.
And if you liked this short, I recommend the other works of Nagao Takena, especially Chainsaw Maid and Bloody Night.

Bloody Date (BD) es un cortometraje de cinco minutos creado por Nagao Takena. Una de las características más llamativas del señor Takena es que todos sus trabajos están hechos con plastilina. La claymation es un tanto inusual en el anime, pero decididamente tiene personalidad. Personalmente, me parece genial... pero me desvío del tema. Este es el quinto trabajo de Takena, y es, al menos a mi humilde parecer, el mejor (y también es el más violento y grafico, así que si el gore no les va, pueden dejar de leer).
La historia de BD nos muestra a una joven pareja disfrutando de una cita tranquila en un parque. Todo iba bien hasta que, de la nada, aparece un psicópata con un hacha y destroza la cabeza del chico, regando de masa encefálica (violeta) a la pobre chica. Ahora, además de haber quedado soltera, deberá correr por su vida... por suerte, a los pocos metros encuentra una casa, donde le dan asilo. Pero como en todas las películas de terror, no hay lugar seguro, y los problemas de nuestra protagonista no hicieron más que comenzar...
La animación está bien hecha. El movimiento es fluido, y el frame rate es muy bueno para tratarse de plastilina. Se nota que le metieron muchas ganas al stop motion. Los personajes están bien, hay varios, todos muy diferentes unos de otros. Mención especial para el asesino, realmente es perturbador. En cuanto al paisaje, es de papel y cartón xD. El parque es muy colorido, y tiene varios árboles, así que cumple. La casa donde nuestra heroína busca refugio es una caja xD. Pero adentro hay varios muebles, bastante detallados, y hasta hay obras de arte, como un cuadro (dibujado con fibra). Todo un detalle.
El sonido... bueno, esto es una película muda, así que no hay voces (aunque si hay diálogos, tanto en ingles como en japonés. Fiel al estilo de las películas mudas, en lugar de ser subtítulos, la pantalla se pone negra por unos segundos para que leamos, y luego se reanuda la acción). Si hay música presente. Al principio, cuando todo esté bien, es tranquila (suena como la de un xilofón... o un órgano... la verdad no tengo muy buen oído musical) y se pone más intensa en las partes violentas o de persecución. No está mal del todo, pero creo que la música en Bloody Night (otro corto de Takena) estaba mejor. Los efectos de sonido pueden estar o no presentes: no escuchamos cuando se golpea una puerta, pero si cuando se traba. Solo detalles n_n.
Para finalizar, recomiendo este corto a las personas a las que les guste el terror y no se impresionen por la obscena cantidad de sangre y desmembramientos. Si, es plastilina, pero la violencia está presente, así que si el gore no les va, manténganse alejados (para que se hagan una idea, es similar a Celebrity Deathmatch). También recomiendo esto a la gente que quiera ver algo nuevo y no tenga muchos prejuicios, por que como dije al principio, la claymation no es algo muy abundante. Además de su originalidad a nivel visual, uno de los puntos fuertes de BD es su historia: para ser un corto de terror de solo cinco minutos, es muy buena, y tiene un final muy, muy interesante.
Si este corto les gusto, recomiendo los otros trabajos de Takena, especialmente Chainsaw Maid y Bloody Night.
