Yep, Ragnar had several deaths flags in this episode for example, the nice and cheerful eating scene. He was viewed as an obstacle to Askeladd's ambitions. I'm surprised that the King wants Canute dead.

Saw that plot to kill Ragnar coming a mile off, surprised he wasn't more careful , if Ragnar was supposedly someone strong enough entrusted to escort/protect the prince you'd think there would've been more of fight.

Canute now has a difficult road ahead of him. To think that a king would resort to murdering his own son for his own filthy benefits.. how rotten. Nothing vile in this series surprises me anymore.

Here I was about to award Ragnar, "Worse Surrogate Dad" for holding Canute back.

But now doesn't seem like the right moment.

Seems like canute and thorfinn are starting to warm to each other. Poor Ragnar, he was just trying to protect canute :( He survived longer than I thought he would though.

Ragnar seemed like a doting and overprotective dad for the most part since he's been guarding the Prince for as long as he can remember but finding out about King Sweyn's plot to have him killed by the enemy so no one would object to Harald being the next King of Denmark explained why he was acting that way. It's a massive shame that he got killed off by Askeladd of all people but at least he was able to bring up a very complicated factor into his plans before he passed away.

Seeing Canute having cooking as a hobby made me feel sad for him since he really looked like someone who just wanted to live a quiet life. No one's going to tell him the truth about what really happened to his father figure so I wonder if that will make him more stern and independent after the grieving period, of course.

Both a dark and lighthearted sort of episode this time. we learned Canute has a hobby of cooking which took me by surprise, and i think this is the longest we have heard him speak for. I have a feeling that Thorfinn will unintentionally adopt Canute as his brother.

And Askeladd is a confirmed A**hole, but i do like him as a character.

Asekladd really needs to tone if down with the dad killing. If he goes on like this, he'll just end up with an army of children aiming for his life.

Indeed, a case where the antagonist is hundred times more interesting than the protagonist.

Fully agree. Thorfinn hasn't really made much of an impression but Askellad is absolutely fascinating. A character that I really love to hate.

I really love this. The praying and food scenes... ♥ The last one brought me cozy feelings.

And Thorfinn, at the bottom, is a good boy; it seems to me he has a soft and protective side inside his hard shell that he comprehensibly built, and this side will probably be awaken someday.

And, yes, being a prince must not be easy at that time, Canute is also slave of his status and obligation as so, he cannot be who he is. A person who needs to be care of and Ragner was meant for it, despite he caused the lack of maturity (actually, the idea of maturity they imply within that epoch context and values is kind of doubtful in my opinion) and will/expression of the boy.

Alias, Ragnar's death was one the most unexpected and sad moments I saw in anime :(

What has happened? This just isn't the same show. Not much fighting. Thorfinn is an afterthought. Meh.

Askeladd intentionally putting his men in harm's way, so that it appears like he's making bad decisions and has lost his luck? If he's doing it in purpose, I don't understand his reasoning. If it's not on purpose and he really has lost his luck, then Ragnar not telling him about the King wanting to kill Canute is another example of bad luck. And it would seem to imply that Thorfinn may soon kill him in a duel.

Don't know why anyone cares that Ragnar is dead. He wasn't intelligent. Wasn't charismatic. He was just there. There was nothing emotional about that death whatsoever.

Rip Ragnar, despite being a bit annoying with his complaining he probably is the only one who truly cared for Canute like a true parent. Askeladd truly is a great antagonist, can't wait for the day that he gets defeated.

Another heavy hitter of an episode. We got the bros taking a piss in the snow together, rad. Thorfinn is without a doubt just a minor side character in what was seemingly going to be his own story. He’s kind of just there to be extremely edgy and to get some stuff done for askeladd in return for a duel. Princess trap waifu canute was just insufferable but that little snippet of his backstory with his father was kind of sad. I feel sorry for him now. Everyone already is mentioning ragnars demise but what I want to talk about is how “the ear” is basically ex machina for them for them to know when to run or fight. So convenient that everyone in this Viking anime has powers. I was hoping for a realistic take and we did get that for the most part, but really it’s just another dime a dozen shounen.

Thorkell is just waiting for news and just eating his guts off until the survivor actually gives them information and enlightens Thorkell

And now Askeladd and his men knew that they're coming and this ends up in an unexpected battle between a few men on the battlefield

Ragnar got ambushed by Askeladd's men and talked him out of Canute's purpose here, We mustn't forget that Askeladd is a bad guy I almost did.

Anne ratted Askeladd to the Englishmen and ultimately, Throkell. This ain't just some bad luck, it's straight-up karma on Askeladd's part.

What is this other than Canute trying to passively seduce everyone!? Canute with his hair tied up into a ponytail be looking hella Cute, fuck. Maybe this is the reason Askeladd wanted him to grown a pair and be a real man, it's so that this beauty of a princess do not distract and make literally everyone fall for him, not for loyalty but for lust. I can only imagine what Thorfinn thought inside his head upon witnessing firsthand, Canute with his ponytail, without his robe all whilst he's cooking up a meal as a woman would.

Well, well, well, another one bites the dust, pain and suffering brought about growth and wisdom according to Askeladd's action, that's why he killed Canute's closest acquaintance. Only to find out that the King is after one of his son's life, particularly the weak, frail and cowardly Canute, all to ensure the nobles will not split apart the Kingdom he reigns upon. The bastard cares more about his Kingdom than he does to his son.

When Ragnar was dying and has the final vision of Prince Canute in the plains of Vinland, Canute is still a child. This explains that Ragnar still saw Canute as that small, helpless child and is the reason why he treated him as such instead of letting him grow. Small details like these really make this show top tier.

man, i liked ragnar a lot. what's the deal with askeladd killing off the good ones. he was humorous and cared for canute as his own child when the king is out to let him die in favor of the other son. yeah, he coddled him but did the fcker have to die? did he have to die. sh1t is sh1t, free is free, DAMN! after he cooked that heartwarming meal with thorfinn's rabbit too... now who is going to complain?

Another sad and emotional episode. RIP Ragnar. You were the closest father figure to Canute. I knew it was gonna happen soon but wasn't expecting it just yet. That was the so-called driving force to push the hatchling out of the nest.

I don't know how Prince Canute will handle this but I hope things turn out well.

It really was a matter of time before Ragnar died, one way or another. The sly manner of his death was shameful to me. I guess it’s fitting of Askeladd, given how he ambushed Thor. It’s nothing for him to use children as bait or pawns, and for that his moral compass is truly skewed.

I am quite curious to see how Canute reacts to his keeper’s death in the following episodes…

Not to mention how his relationship with Thorfinn will progress.

RIP Ragnar. He was annoying but deeply cared for Canute. I hate how Askeladd forcibly got Ragnar killed so that Canute can grow.

But man any person who sees the scene with Canute in housewife mode will think that Canute is a woman.

i hope Askeladd dies a very painful death.

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

Literally called that Ragnar will die to get Canute to develop. Ragnar dying hit me in the feels :(.

It was foreshadowed in both the opening and a scene earlier on where Askeladd said the chick would have to leave the nest.

Didn't care much for Ragnar's death since I was never a huge fan of him but there were death flags everywhere surrounding his character for multiple episodes now, especially with the opening. It was bound to happen at some point. He did serve Prince Canute well and was the one real emotional support he had even through tumultuous times. He did serve as a decent plot device now, to have Canute's character push forward and to have Askeladd's ambitions proceed on with one big obstacle/trouble being dispatched of here. I'm not a real fan of most Vinland Saga characters and while I know Thorfinn does develop later on in the manga (and season 2 releasing soon), he has been a character to forget so far. But Askeladd's morally gray character has been the one real saving grace to prevent this series from completely being devoid of personality or interest for me. Even Thorkell wore off his appeal for me somewhat over these last few episodes with his short segments. He's just kind of there.

The Ragnar scene at the end was lacking impact, but it was still decently executed from the manga for the most part. The drawings don't look as intense but the music was solid as usual.

Well that revolution puts a big hole in Askeladd plans. I guessed that Askeladd would eventually get rid of Ragnar, still a bit sad to see him go. The scene with the tavern owner was pretty funny try as they might Thorkell keep eating and drink all his stuff.

I really like the show so far. Despite some events being predictable in the first half, I grew to like the subtle development of the different characters, especially Thorfinn and the prince. I really wonder if by the end of the show, or maybe next season, Thorfinn would still be after his revenge and if he'll ever go back to Iceland.

The king of Denmark sending his own son to war was a calculated move and it was very obvious that he was hoping to get rid of the weak link in the royal family. So far, the show has given me some perspective into what it might've been like in the middle ages and how cruel life was for many.

I'm starting to believe that Askelaad is running out of luck too since he's been dealing with one obstacle after another from the second he decided to "escort" the poor prince. Though I have to say he's a witted man and it's refreshing seeing characters act upon their thoughts and not their emotions.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

i’m starting to sort of get askeladd’s characterisation and what it is about him as an antagonist that’s actually interesting.
for me, it’s despising the actions but logically understanding the motivation and reasoning. i’m worried that i’m speaking too soon and somewhere down the line i’ll get my most despised antagonist trope: laughing manically while preaching said motivations. it makes the villains hollow.
he’s interesting, not likeable but i don’t think the point of him is to make us root for him.

This episode is an example of how much of a slow burn this show is. Askellad is a strong character with an unpredictable and savage arc. Thorfinn's role in the grand scheme if the things is made rather unclear with these last few episodes, but this one in particular solidifies the open ended nature of this anime.
