| They repeated jokes too often and the fights were nothing too mindblowing, but this show was a real good time. Definitely checking back for season 2 |
| And so we end with Mash's secret getting revealed: his inability to use magic. How will this change things? I'm guessing not much, but we'll see next year. Imo this series is an example of trying to be one thing and doing it well. As has been said only about a billion times by now this series is more or less a comedic fusion of Harry Potter and One Punch Man. Its humor is often repetitive, but effective. If you really wanted to you could probably just bunch all the gags into a set number of categories and characters. Mash has his obsession with cream puffs and deadpan delivery for instance. Plus the super strength of course. The one dude whose name I forget is a siscon. Etc... There are some shonen action tropes being played with in cute ways as well, largely involving the antagonists. It works well enough. I intend to watch the next season, but going in blind as I am I feel like I still already know what to expect from a plot perspective. Maybe not the finer details, but the overall big picture. Mash and his might will conquer all. The only question is how. To what extreme, likely over-the-top comedic lengths will the series go in getting to the end? And how many cream puffs will be devoured along the way? Solid 7/10. Nothing more, but I really don't think this is trying for more, honestly, and that's okay. Not every series needs to aspire for some deeper meaning to be enjoyable. Just my two cents anyway. |

| And there we have it... the last episode. I enjoy Mashle a lot because I've always been looking for something like a slice of life Harry Potter. The stakes in Mashle seem high but essentially are played pretty low due to the comedic aspects. So while it's not slice-of-life, it still gives a similar vibe and therefore my search is fulfilled. There have been other similar shows, but I do like a parody like this a lot, so it happened to cover a lot of my usual likes. So yeah, I liked Mashle. HOWEVER, I have a huge gripe with this anime and that would be the characters. Mash is entertaining to watch, but everyone else is so flat. Of Mash's main squad, Dot stood out to me the most as a character with the most potential, but they didn't fully explore him. Even if this is a parody, it just feels like such a waste to tease at some type of development only to go the lazy route and give him some hidden power up. Lance would be after Dot in regards to being interesting, but even with having a whole goal he's not very interesting. Lemon and Finn just... don't have much going for them at all. You could probably combine those characters to create a much more interesting character, but I can only imagine they'd just fumble that too. Most of the character interactions were just... not all that great unless it was a comedy bit. Even as a parody, flat characters aren't enough to make the anime pop off, yet I did enjoy myself. If the characters had more to them then I feel like I would have liked Mashle even more! |
| Abel's redemption was technically nothing special, a very by-the-book "villain gets beaten by the hero and learns a lesson and by the way he also has a sad backstory and was actually working under an even stronger antagonistic force the whole time" narrative, but even though I know that I was somehow really touched... must be my seiyuu bias. I honestly can't really make up my mind on whether I enjoyed this show or not. Some of the episodes were a drag to get through, but on the other hand they did manage to squeeze out some visible reactions: the comedy style gets very stale and repetitive but I chuckled at the jokes way more often than I had the right to. Most of the cast, especially the heroine, is pretty insufferable but it's hard to say whether that's a con when they're made that way on purpose for the sake of the meta humor – if there's one thing Lemon exceeds in, it's capturing the essence of a shounen love interest™. I suppose Mashle can be summed up as a good concept that could use a more engaging, fleshed-out execution. Might check out S2 if I'm on the mood when it's airing. |

| Time on screen? These old farts are shamelessly breaking the fourth wall. LOL As we all expected that he'd just smash that uber magic mirror physically. Meh. Expel him? Let's ask the Headmaster Dumbledore...uhmm I mean the old headmaster dude first, OK? XD Huh, for a HP ripoff and everything else thrown in whatever plot we have, I thought everything will be done and over with this, and now we'll get season 2 next year. 6/10 it has it's moments but overall almost meh. |

| Pretty nice show even if the Harry Potter-esque influence are a little bit too obvious. Still, I liked more the funny part than the serious part. |
| This was a really fun and good introductory season. Let's see how the next season is :) |
