Mononoke Hime

These two movies seem very similar. Princess Nausicaa has many of the same qualities as Prince Ashitaka from 'Princess Mononoke'. Little subtleties like the enchanted forest in 'Mononoke' and the toxic forest in 'Nausicaa' reflect each other. The boars from 'Mononoke' and the Ohmu from 'Nausicaa'. Both these movies are very unique and at the same time very similar. Perhaps the similarities are due to the fact that they are both Hayao Miyazaki films. 'Princess Mononoke' is the story of human civilization expanding and endangering the enchanted forest and how the people/creatures of the forest react to that growth. 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind' is the story of how the toxic forest is expanding and how human civilization reacts to that growth.  read more 

Making recommendations for Hayao Miyazaki films is almost useless. This director has it’s own style in graphics and storytelling which is hard to be muddled. His every film share same ideas and attitude about life. All characters in his films act almost the same, naturally, following their own heart and without hesitation. So if you’ve seen one of Hayao-sama films and get excited go and watch the rest. Here we go with Mononoke and Nausicaa. Except favorite Miyazaki’s mysteries girls which have special ability (for example to communicate with strange creatures) or artifact you’ll find in these movies his other favorite feature – a relationship between humans and nature. You won’t find explanations about how to prevent global warming or decrease environment pollution. Those films mostly based on special Japanese perception of the world which arise from Shinto. So all battles in reality are only reflection of battles in their hearts. read more 

Both of the same director, they share the sme message of protecting our world and the nature. A brave girl who will give everything to save the world she loves so much despite of the cost it will need. A masterpiece 

Both movies have a similar environmental conservation theme, have strong female characters, and show a fine line between what is considered good/evil. If you enjoy any of Miyazaki's movies, these are definitely must-sees. 

Both have that man vs. nature theme but in different settings. Both Miyazaki films. 

Obviously the influence sphere is obvious, since both of these works were done by the same man (Hayao Miyazaki / 宮崎 駿). In many cases, Princess Mononoke feels like a spiritual successor to Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. The films both deal with the same issues and problems, and most of the characters even fit the same roles. The only difference is the setting, where P.M. takes place in the Muromachi period of Japan, Nausicaä is a steampunj-futuristic setting. The stories are almost exactly the same, but, that doesn't make them both enjoyable for different reasons. Nausicaä is a must see for anybody. 

They're both about princes and princesses saving the village and both pretty much have violence. Although, Princess Mononoke has much more bloody parts than Nausicaa and it reminded me more of this so I had to make a recommendation of it. 

Both are ghiblish movies, made by the same author, similar art. In both of them one of the main characters is a strong fighter female who cares about nature/animals. They are both really good movies.  

They both were made by the same director and animation studio, so they share similar styles of artwork, and of pacing. Most notable of their similarities is their story themes. Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke are about finding and balancing harmony between Nature and Technology. 

Both are Miyazaki films with a strong emphasis on the conflict of Man against Nature in which a kind-hearted hero brings peace to both sides. 

I cannot stress enough how similar these two movies are. Both beautiful films about humans and their relationship with nature and how the natural elements of the world react when threatened by humans and the construction of man. Nausicaa and Ashitaka are extremely similar and their relationships with the other characters and how they treat their world and fellow inhabitants of it are without a doubt next to the same. I can argue that Miyazaki created Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa as a test run in a way for Mononoke Hime just because how similar the two films are. If you loved one of these two you need to watch the other, such fantastic movies made by none other than Hayao Miyazaki.  read more 

The story is somewhat similar, about a mystical world the heroine interacts with and tries to bring peace to. 

Both being awesome Ghibli movies... There is no need to add more XD But compared to other Ghibli movies they both have the theme of humans´ war against nature and how to coexists or not. :) 

It's been said before but I want to say it anyway. They're two sides of the same coin, I'm glad I watched Mononoke first so I could see the differences. Mononoke deals with saving the forest of animals from humans. Nausicaa deals with saving the human world from the forest of bugs and trying to find peace between the two worlds. Both have strong female protags but in different ways. Mononoke is vicious, she won't hesitate to choke a bloke, while Nausicaa does everything in her power to do things the pacifist way, she does get ferocious for a scene but she learns from it.  

These Miyazaki works rank as possibly the greatest anime film productions in history. Themes of environment and social responsibility are strong in both these films, but Nausicaa is a more personal journey with a more inventive mythology. 

A boy trying to save humanity as it stands on the brink of apocalypse, Princess Mononoke is a dark version of Nausicaa, which has a somewhat wholesome feel overall. 

The darker and more violent of the Ghibli films. They have very similar themes, story, and characters. 

Their both movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki and animated by Studio Ghibli that take place in a fantasy world with similar themes about the harmony between man and nature. The difference with these 2 are while Princess Mononoke takes place in a old Japan like setting Nausicaä takes place in a post apocalyptic word.  

both movies are from studio ghibli, the protagonists are strong female characters who defend nature and meet a guy that helps them. the antagonists are also strong females who sort of destroy the environments they all live in. I rated mononoke hime higher tho, I think the antagonist has a lot more depth, since she's more ambiguous, she may be violent with the nature but she saves the lepers. also, princess mononoke seems to be older than nausicaä, it made me like her as a character a little bit more, like she's more mature. although they're both independent and strong women. its always good to see the female represantation in miyazaki's movies.  read more 

Both the anime heavily focus on Human and Nature relationships both have strong female lead and lots of memorable characters .  

Both about the war between humanity and nature, and the consequences of ruining the Earth too much. They're very similar in worldbuilding and characters as well. Both amazing movies, and if you like one, you'll enjoy the other just as much! 

In both of these movies... you'll experience a great story with decent visuals. Since they are old movies...so you can't expect much from animation and art style. But still it will get you hooked. So just give it a try...you will enjoy it. 

Both anime revolve around the spiritual aspect of nature and are rooted in Shinto beliefs.  

Both deal with the supernatural and the relationships between humans and the world they inhabit. 

Both are situated in an old Japanese era. Both main characters looking after the spirits of nature. 

Both are themed on plant, forest, animal, supernatural! 

Both cover the spiritual world of old Japan, and watching Mushishi helps western people understand Princess Mononoke better. 

A beautiful anime about relationship between human being and nature. 

Mushishi and Mononoke Hime explore nature in a fantasy setting. With their themes, both anime adapt a mystical background with ingredients of a tale involving characters that get themselves involved with supernatural beings. They also present a powerful background with a natural outlook of its nature. The soundtracks are smooth ones that retain a serene-like feeling with minimal comedy. Character relationships are explored and the laws of nature with humans and beasts are also emphasized. 

Both are filled with serene backgrounds and music and stress the theme of mankind's balance with nature and the spiritual aspects it possesses.  

they both possess something soft and mature about them. supernatural, fantasy, and adventure. they have a very smooth transgression, get you thinking, and have a bittersweet feel to them. 

Both share themes of nature, humanity, and the cycle of birth and death. Mononoke Hime has spirits of the forest, gods, demons... These are very similar to the mushi of Mushishi, with the main character of Mushishi also trying to find a balance between humans and nature, the same way Askitaka does. Both have gorgeous scenery and animation, with heavy emphasis on natural surroundings.  

The atmosphere is very similar. Both deal with nature, the supernatural, and what is the very core of all life itself.  

Both stories are about the coexistence of people and nature. Both using supernatural metaphors - spirits of nature - to tell the story. 

They both have an incredibly similar world and atmosphere. An older time in the forests of Japan where there are themes of the spirits of nature and humans living in harmony.  

Beautiful scenery and similar theme of respecting nature and humanity's place alongside it, even though nature can be dangerous and frightening. 

Both are good Seinen products based on Japanese folklore who strive to create a deep and well-rounded mystical-supernatural setting. Great use of silence and pauses in both works.  

The great theme of nature and civilisation being in conflict, made visually delightful by inventive and quirky animation, runs through Mononoke in the same way as it does through Origin. More than that, Mononoke presents a two-sided argument with more complex characters and superior action sequences whilst retaining that 'innocent' feel you find in Origin. 

Both have a similar man versus nature theme. 

Both movies are amazingly wonderful to watch. If you enjoy 'Man vs. Nature' concepts then you'll enjoy Agito just as much as Mononoke 

In both the movies nature has got a conscience. Both make you think about what is right or wrong. And they both of the movies are just... incredible!

Origin: Spirits of the Past was probably inspired by Mononoke Hime and Princess Mononoke is way better, especially in terms of character development. 

Both have very good storyline to support a successful movie. But the part that makes it less successful (this is just my opinion), is the fail of an ending both of these movies have. Still great movies....until the post-post climax portions. 

Both were made by Studio Ghibli, and have girls as main characters . Both almost equal in length and are movies. They are both very good. I recommended checking both out. 

made by the same guy Hayao Miyazaki. He makes great anime movies that will leave you wanting more, I can't say that I didn't enjoy watching all of the movies that were made by him. His movies are very creative and original, if you've seen one, you should check out some of his others, they are all just as good. His movies are so great that I even re watched some of them a few times. anyways if you're interested in one of his movies, you're almost guaranteed to like the others. see for yourself. 

The great thing about Studio Ghibli is that each and every one of their movies goes out in their own ways to tell a story, yet they have a close resemblance to one another simply because of the directing and execution it takes. I would take this recommendation as "just watch everything Ghibli". Though if you really want some more specifics, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away have a journey type story where both MCs have this one central mission which eventually gives domino effects into meeting new people and trying to work things out in this new life. Both are great movies sharing the same director, Miyazaki Hayao, and studio, Studio Ghibli. There is something for all of these two movies.  read more 

- kids vs the adults and the world - two main protagnoists comign from different worlds - kids changing the history ("kids are the future") - oniric world 

Although Howl's Moving Castle doesn't have such a 'save the nature theme' that most of Hayao Miyazaki's movies do, it still is about 'no war.' I love all of his movies, Princess Mononoke being my favorite, but out of all his movies, this one is my second favorite. The animation is great as well as the characters. It has a great plot and another curse. In many ways, Howl's Moving Castle is similar to Princess Mononoke. 

A Studio Ghibli connection here, as all other Ghibli movies share as well. Both Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle follow a protagonist who has been cursed by some evil force, which initiates them to set out on a journey, meeting an unconventional character in the midst of so, bringing forward a once in a lifetime trip for them. Both are great movies sharing the same director, Miyazaki Hayao, and studio, Studio Ghibli. There is something for all of these two movies.  

The story elements are very similar, cursed MC forced to move out, then met the Main hero (movie title) to overcome a major conflict. As usual Ghibli is the GOAT of worldbuilding, aside for the stories we are witnessing you feel there is great and alive world out there with so many interesting nuances that you just take a glimpse. Very enjoyable watches, Howl focusing on personal growth and Mononoke on enviromental awareness. 

Besides being two of Hayao Miyazaki's greatest films they both deal with conflict and the deformities hate causes in one's Soul 

The environement's details and creatures are very similar. Global vibes are very similar: poetic, but dynamic. 

Similarities: The mysteries of their worlds and the way they explore them in both, from the designs of; the creatures, the environments and even the characters. I mean, San's design obviously helped inspire the design of Nanachi, Ashikaga's curse to Regu's cyborg arms and even Lady Eboshi antagonistic beliefs to Ouzen's own antagonistic beliefs. Even the stories are alike; a tale of a journey to found something/someone (with Mononoke Hime, a cure for Ashikaga's curse and with Made in Abyss, Riko's mother).  

Made in Abyss feels like a Ghibli movie that was written by a sadist. Boasts an Art Director, Osamu Masayuma, who has worked on various Ghibli films too, so the art is just as fantastic and captivating. 

Vivid and detailed natural environment, a setting organic to the plot mixing more down-to-earth elements with supernatural ones. Both anime play around with the more apathetic, dangerous and less softer aspects of nature. Of course, one is a movie another a series, and the character designs of MiA are of the chibi style instead of the realistically proportioned Ghibli ones.  

Both have the same feeling to it, and both are about someone running away from his home for the same reason which is being cursed. 

Moving story, motivated characters, well-crafted fantasy setting. 

Both are great epics, both are about the importance of respecting nature, the coexistence of the world of humans and the world of spirits, and both are about the encounter of two characters from very different worlds, who have a choice to make between fighting (aka destroying life even if it is to protect something) and being nurturing (aka perpetuating life). Also the visual style of both has a lot of volume and matter. 

Similar themes in terms of nature and environmentalism, a staple of both Nahoko Uehashi and Hayao Miyazaki, but there is also a strong cultural anthropology / ethnology aspect to both. 

They are very alike in plot.When the spirit of the forest turns bad and destroys the forest.Both of them are very cute movies^^ 

Both movies are dramatic fantasies about the struggle of humans and animals fighting to save an enchanted forest. Each film features a mystic forest spirit aided by young heroes with an affinity and empathy for the forest's creatures. 

Besides the very similar plot, these movies are a great watch to anyone who enjoys fantasy mixed with a bit of action. The greenery and depiction of forest wild-life are really fantastic and either one of these will have you grip harder to the nearest object as the plot thickens and things start going down. 

In Both movies is a fight in a forest, both have healing water in the mid of the forest, they fight in both against a giant "creature", all characters have a simular character in the other movie,..... the only differences are that the pokemon movie isnt that brutal and plays of corse with pokemon chatacters. 

Both anime - a fantasy, with atmosphere of romanticism and adventures where people co-operate with gods. Well and of course plotting in this work of Makoto Shinkai is too similar to an anime of Hayao Miyazaki. 

Both movies have incredibly similar atmospheres and basic plot lines about humans trying to be/control gods and not fully understanding what they're getting themselves into. Princess Mononoke delves much more heavily into a humanity vs nature theme, while Children Who Chase Lost Voices focuses more on how people cope with death. Both are gorgeous beyond belief and if you like one you will undoubtedly enjoy the other. 

"Children Who Chase Lost Voices" bears a strong resemblance to many Studio Ghibli films, especially "Princess Mononoke" -the majority of both take place in a mythical natural world -both these worlds are guarded by mythical creatures -the antagonists in both series are aiming on upsetting the natural balance of things in hope of attaining immortality/bringing back the dead -Shin and Ashitaka are pretty similar,, both come from native cultures, have a horse/deer companion, and have a strained but protective relationship with the female protagonist -both mythical worlds have evil spirits that have been corrupted by their hatred for humanity -both deal with the theme of man vs nature In conclusion Children Who Chase Lost Voices and Princess Mononoke are a lot alike and viewers will probably notice many similarities between the two movies. read more 

Both have similar fight scenes, similar style mythology and medieval style Japanese villages 

Both movies have a similar setting (pseudo mediaeval), a similar premise (an illness coming from wild animals) and similar themes. 

Shika no Ou: Yuna to Yakusoku no Tabi or, The Deer King has almost the same elements as Princess Mononoke, from elk riding main character to the asthetics, despite having different storyline. 

Both characters have a curse that is affecting them. There is a political plot going on between various communities. Handsome stranger travels the country. Lots of nature. There are Deer in both of these. 

Armies clash around two characters, who, while they don't trust each other at first, try to make sense of the world. Both deal with the same themes during approximately the same time period. Mononoke is more fantasy, Stranger is slightly more realistic/grittier.  

Both movies are set during the late Middle Ages in Japan and feature action with a good variety of pre-modern weapons (e.g matchlocks, spears and bows). Their differences lie in themes; Princess Mononoke is a semi-historical fantasy that focuses on nature vs man conflict (between a forest's denizens and a society of outcasts), whereas Sword of the Stranger is a ronin adventure that focuses even more on action and on feudal wars (including conflict between Ming mercenaries and locals). 

Both take place in same period. There is a relationship between the MCs of not trusting each other at the beginning. There are fights, not only duels but also with armies, which are well animated. Princess mononoke is more fantastical and sword of the stranger, more realistic 

Both have similar themes relating to what happens when humans encroach and try to destroy forests and nature 

Ecology, Human VS Nature, human nature, self destruction, humans ignorance and arrogance, all these themes are raised there. "Earth Girl Arjuna" - "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" - "Princess Mononoke" - "Mushishi" - ... They are similar, with some same context and themes risen, but they are different in presentation of those themes. 

Animation and themes-wise there are soo many parallells. The realizations about how we are harming the earth are deeply woven into these stories. 

Both have somewhat similar setting and atmosphere, both feature wolves in some way and both have serious and dramatic tone to them. 

Both have similar lore to an extent, and feature wolves (which is a key part to both animes) Definitely the same kind of feel 

At their cores, both Mononoke and Erin are about our relationship with nature, and both create convincing and fantastic worlds that we feel strongly connected to. It is through these worlds that we understand the various characters' motivations and points of view. Due to its format as a TV series, Kemono no Souja Erin is able to paint a deeper emotional tone than Mononoke. And like Mononoke, Erin has a mature, engrossing story that respects its audience, never cheapens the experience with common anime tropes. Like Studio Ghibli, Nahoko Uehashi's works that have been adapted by Production IG are above trends and spiky haircuts, and successfully aspires to be more than its genre. read more 

Both stories are taking place in a fantasy world where the question of human actions on the nature is questionned and criticized.  

they are both medieval and both are really action/fun filled anime, if you enjoy medieval anime at all then you have to watch princess mononoke because its a classic. 

Runaway. TnK and Princess Mononoke both feature a runaway who ends up meaning a girl of some quality in supernatural respect, whether it be due to a relationship or special power. The two pairs end up trying to make do with one another in both movies too, though Princess Mononoke takes into consideration all parties in the story. Whereas TnK is just teenagers doing dumb things but with one another, they can improve themselves for the better. Both highly acclaimed movies though I would say Princess Mononoke tries (and succeeds) at being more sophisticated. If nothing else TnK is for the visuals.  

Both movies have a similar premise - a human girl working with spirits to protect the forest from destruction by "greedy" human developers. Miyori no Mori is like a sanitised version of Mononoke Hime that is meant for younger audiences.  

Made to wander the world, with nowhere else to go to. The fallen elites Ashitaka and Hyakkimaru both see themselves in this situation. Princess Mononoke's Ashitaka has been made to leave his tribe for a cure where he embarks on an unprecedented mythical journey in what the forest can offer. Dororo follows victimized Hyakkimaru on a journey to get his body back after it was taken from him in an exchange his father made. Both are great in telling the tale of a man's journey which gives him multiple life lessons along the way. Both filled with action too.  

Made by Miyazaki's son and has simlilar humanity and nature theme towards it. I recommend because it doesnt have too in depth characters but how they react and actions require no explanation. As well as many great motifs! 

Both play with the man vs nature theme, though Ponpoko is a lighter and softer ecological adventure directed by Isao Takahata, whereas Princess Mononoke is a dark and highly violent Miyazaki film. 

- Both movies turn around nature and the natural order, and show us what happen when the balance is broken. - Both movies involve mythologycal creatures who exist to keep that balance. - They both develop ideas like retribution and responsibility. - In both cases there is a marked difference between the human being and nature. - Both mc are foreigners who arrive to the town/comunity and get involve in the local problems. - Both have a human female character who lives in nature. 

Beast and man. Whilst having varying plots, Princess Mononoke and Wolf Children both have similar ideas when it comes to the relationship between man and animals. Princess Mononoke takes a more pessimistic view which shows the constant conflict between the two races. Whereas, Wolf Children is much more optimistic though it uses half-half beings in a family with humans. Both are great visual masterpieces about the two sides relationships between man and animals can bring, being the good side and the dark side. 

Both feature a lost boy searching for his purpose, where both of them have received powers that they didn't ask for. They both meet a mysterious girl who helps them throughout their journey but also acts as the deuteragonist/protagonist. Both series involve themes of dying nature and tackles the problem of human interaction and nature (In Mononoke, humans tearing down forests; in Xam'd, humans abusing shamans for personal gain.) Symbolism is also integrated in both series, some symbols being "rebirth" and "hope." Both series also feature great artwork, animation, and soundtracks. 

Garden of Words and Princess Mononoke don't have anything close connection, however, they do follow an unconventional relationship between two beings in each. Presented in a way to feel a little more flamboyant but well-produced than they already are. Garden of Words does this with an age gap relationship, Princess Mononoke with an animal and human relationship. Both are great movies with amazing attention to detail. You will come out of both not forgetting them in the long run.  

The will to leave everything behind, the need to save that which is important to you, and the strength to push forward with whatever the future may hold. Stories KnY and Princess Mononoke both follow two individuals who go out, far away from their home in order to find something that may change the dark fate that occurred to their homes on that fateful day. With such a trek, come new ones who join along which is seen in both stories. Both are great anime, receiving very large positive reception, filled with amazing visuals and great audio too. Though Princess Mononoke has a deeper more sophisticated story than KnY's general narrative, by no means bad.  read more

With most recommendations already, and mine, there is a Ghibli connection here. Though Secret World and Princess Mononoke have their intimate similarities such as a strong female lead who does everything in their power to better their family. A dude comes along and aids in such a mission as well. You could look at both as two sides of the same coin in some respect. Both are great Studio Ghibli movies, for all to enjoy.
