One of the most overrated Garbage in Anime. Period.
Well I don't really have grudges against mecha/military anime. I personally enjoyed the thrilling experience of Aldnoah. Zero and quite consistently watching some military anime. But Code Geass was REALLY BAD.
I peronally finished this series because some ppl insisted me on watching this series. I thought the story was going to get better at some point... but it never did.
Story (1/10):
Code Geass is setup in the universe where Japan is a colony and the ruling country is ... Britannia? Is this coincidence or possible hatred against western countries... that aside let's go to the next one.

The main characters are never injured and side characters always die. EVEN WHEN THEY ARE OUTNUMBERED 100 to 1. It's like saying couple of local men from the middle east defeated the entire US forces there.

Pretty bad gundam fights. Fights aren't intense at all.
And countless more to just get the conflict going in the most boring ways as possible. It's like Mirai Nikki on drugs except it's not interesting.

I feel like that I can't give another 10 to an emotional anime now that I have seen this...
Sukasuka is the one anime that will linger in my heart for quite some time. It is also first drama/romance anime that made me want to re-watch. It's also a hard anime to describe with words; it's really an emotional roller coaster. But if I were to describe Sukasuka in terms of more popular anime, I'd describe it as what "Violet Evergarden Should Have been", or Anohana, or Clannad or whatever.
Think of Sukasuka as an emotional movie that gets your heart into wrecks because it is comparable

to, well actually better than a lot of emotional movies. It has perfect soundtracks played at the right time, with happy and sad themes to add more to the story. The soundwork for SukaSuka is one of the best, rivaling Violet Evergarden. The sounds add another dimension on this such already great anime.
Despite it's long title (which made it subject to laughs of being an anime based off LN, which are quite full with mediocre stories), sukasuka has one of the best stories I have seen in anime so far. Well stories aside, it's phenomenal in ... just all departments.
The world building in Sukasuka is ONE OF THE BEST. I won't talk much about the story here, but from the first episode where Willem and Chtholly met, I could tell that there were much to be explored in this world with floating islands and fairies. Some LN readers have complained that this anime is not full adaptation of the 5 novels, but the anime by itself completes Chtholly's story (and in a good fashion) too. There is a beginning, the roller coaster then the resolution. It's not like many other LN adaptation where it is cut off in the middle.
The reason I gave a 9 on the enjoyment is because the empty sensation that comes as a result of finishing this anime. It's been several weeks since I finished this series, but I still yearn to find another series like this. A lot of anime looks pretty shit now that I have seen this. I am really sad that this anime doesn't get the attention it deserves. The production and the story is top-tier, levels ahead of majority of popular anime.
TL; DR: A Masterpiece (coming from a guy with really low MAL avg ratings)

I never knew that a card game like karuta could be a sport. Chihayafuru, an anime about karuta exhibits characteristics of a sports anime, and alongside it, their FLAWS.
The feeling of REPETITION is a plague that haunts other sports anime series such as Haikyuu, and Kuroko no Basket. Chihayafuru is actually worse than my aforementioned anime in dealing with this factor. After a certain point, all the karuta games in the series just look and feel the same. It just feels like you are watching the same match over and over again.

I found them really boring while binge-watching. If I were to watch this anime without skipping a scene, that would be tantamount to me watching ENDLESS EIGHT for an entire season. After a couple of episodes in, I found myself watching 8 to 12 minutes of the anime, and I am sure the average would have been much lower if it wasn't for buffering on my streaming sites.
And for the characters... I don't really hate much of them but there isn't a character I strikingly like either. Chihaya is the generic "athlete with talent but no brains", and Arata is the "generic role model", and Taichi the "childhood friend/loves protagonist" trope. This show really wasn't a special snowflake some people advertised it to be for me. Having Hikaru no Go (an anime about go, a sport mainly only played in East Asia) as one of my favorites, perhaps my expectations were too high for this anime.
But I am surprised that an anime about such seemingly boring topic kept me watching for quite some time. For that reason, I am giving this anime a 6/10. This anime isn't horrible. It's just meh.
So would I recommend this anime to a friend? No.
And I recommend to those who are planning to watch this anime to watch this at around 4-8x speed if possible.
Side note: I actually find the voices of the poetry readers annoying.
TL; DR Chihayafuru is repetitive like many other sports anime, and is not the special snowflake.

Storytelling is not just about the story. It's also about how it is delivered.
When I first saw the studio name "Shaft" next to "slice of life" anime, I was pretty doubtful; Shaft's directing choices are often multi-angled, with various high contrast shots and rapid scene transitions which makes it optimum for mystery and psychological genre. But apparently their approach also fits the "slice of life" genre.
3-Gatsu no Lion is a masterpiece in directing; the sound and the shot choices act perfect to deliver the desolation Kiriyama faces as he lives an isolated life, questioning his way of life. This is how to direct an anime.

Who knew that such a board game can create new insights about life? March Comes in Like a Lion just touches you with just the sense of realism - something that I rarely get in this medium. I feel like that I am in Kiriyama's shoes as I am watching this. And Kiriyama's spiritual growth is perfectly natural and, well the story just seems in touch.
But then why am I giving this a relatively low score?
Mostly due to pacing. Quite a lot feels unresolved after watching the first season (I haven't watch 2nd season so far and I plan to). And Kiriyama's development feels pretty slow. I just felt like that if this entire story was told in 15 episodes rather than 22, it would have resolved this issue. Well, I guess reading the manga might solve the problem for me her.

Solid work from Shaft. Seems like they preserved the original artist's art style too.
Sound: 10/10
I don't think I can immediately find an anime that does better in this field except Bakemonogatari (also by SHAFT). Great openings and endings, and all insert songs and sound effects are placed perfectly.
Characters: 8/10
All just feel REAL. I can relate to them. And they have scars like regular human beings.
I am giving an 8 for now because it doesn't feel like that the characters haven't been fully explored yet.
Enjoyment: 7/10
The story does start to feel little repetitive after a certain point; there are just to many shogi matches to count. I just didn't feel like that the first season ended in the right part.
And most importantly, I am just not a big fan of slow paced anime.
Overall: 8/10
A masterpiece in directing choices. But slow pacing could have been improved. It kinda felt a little repetitive near the end. Nice slow paced story for slice-of-life fans. I think I need to get to 2nd season before being fully able to rate this anime.
TL DR; Realistic anime with great directing choices. The slow-pacing might upset people not accustomed to this type of anime. Too early to judge as this story does not feel complete with just 1st season.

Is this anime about food or po*n?
Despite the criticism "ecchi" genre receives, it is really one of the hardest shows to achieve perfection. It is hard to find the right balance between storyline and lust. And Shokugeki no Souma is a perfect example of what not to do in this genre.
Join Yukihira Sora on his journey to become a master chef, in which every single judge is like Gordon Ramsey and doesn't give a god da*n about just eating food. You know... quite a lot of people live on ramen you know... And as long as it's cooked properly, it's edible god damn it. But

ironically, when it comes to the POWER OF FRIENDSHIP, all cooks become like me, just complimenting on any edible food.
TL DR; This show is utter garbage. There is not a compelling story unlike literature and the already barren plot is plagued with scenes that resemble hentai.

I totally don't get where the story is going. This is the one show where the fan service just totally destroys the storyline. There are just too many useless fan services and I really can't tell whether I am watching HENTAI or anime. Seriously, the VAs kinda make it sound like it is the former. The results of any food competition just seems BS and the story is just full of holes to make any outcome convenient to explain. This lacks all elements from Aristotle's Seven Golden Rules to storytelling.
The development of the characters are really poor - like Tadokoro for example - she just straight up goes from the worst cook in the school to the best. Zero explanations. Romantic developments are utter trash. And the story itself is just as boring as possible. And they just seem to add more overpowered cooks just to get the show going.
And why are there even fan services in an anime supposed to be about food? Why are there even "food orgasims" in the first place? Nobody does that in real life. This show already didn't have a plot and this just ruined it even more.
After some time, I just skipped all cooking scenes to the results.
The only reason I'm not giving this 1/10 is because it is not a propaganda.
This show is utter trash; I don't get why this is so popular.

This show is between 2/10 and 3/10. I reserve scores lower than this for the absolute worst. But this anime already is a disgrace to the storytelling medium. If you are really into food, just watch any Gordon Ramsey.

You are in a running race. As you approach the finish line you are in first, far ahead of your competitors. But right before you get to the finish line you trip. Your victory and your new record is a goner.
This is basically the feeling Eden of Grisaia left me with. A would-be masterpiece that just ruins it at the very end just like Charlotte. Just when I first thought I found a masterpiece in a genre called "Harem", a genre often filled with mediocre stories, the ending just had to ruin it all. last episode of first season and the last arc (though the latter was a bigger turnaround).
Grisaia series is another series that has left me excited while watching. Heck, I finished the entire series within 48 hours of a weekday just because of how enthralling this was. It was a surprise that this series with such compelling story originally was an eroge (whaa). I have not read the VN before watching this series, and really didn't find major flaws until the very end (like pacing), unlike the fans of VN.

The story was a masterpiece... until the writer decided to say "F*** it, and threw physics and logic just out of the gate.
Let me start of by saying how this would have been a masterpiece if it wasn't for the last arc.
The Grisaia series is really a mix of everything: romance, action, psychological, harem, romance, and quite a lot of genres. And despite the chaos the combination the flow of the story (until the last arc) and the tension were perfectly smooth - it felt like I was watching a psychological piece like Psycho-Pass while watching The World God only Knows with tension of Death Note and action like Attack on Titan. And what Grisaia does is gets rid of the flaws of those series and only puts the best elements in the story. I can safely say it's one of the best.
I initially thought that this series would be like Nisekoi or another conventional dull and average MC, but he's pretty bad-ass and just "like a boss", I'd say. And the Harem series does not really act as a detractor from the main series; they all add up adding to the mysterious component of the series. I understand why the VN has received so much praise. Well, this series WAS superb..
Then there was the last arc. (and I thought the last episode of Fruit of Grisaia was full of BS too)
Where nobody gets injured when a car crashes falls from midair off quite some altitude (quite an irony to the Microbus incident), or the villains who are just ridiculously terrible shots, or a bomb that just doesn't detonate, and the girls magically earning money like piece of cake. Well, this series was full of action that kept me tense the entire time, but it just went too overboard here. And the ending was troll just like the last arc itself.
If I were to rate the story, I'd give the first season 8.5/10 (-1 due to last episode), S2+Yuuji's past arc 9.7/10 (Simply just brilliant), and the last arc meager 3.5/10.
And this series probably one of the best sexual innuendos. Well Miles above others. And it doesn't interrupt the action aspect of the story at all. But it has some "quirky and unique" characters....

The angle of shots and just the general tone of the cinematography is perfect for setting up the tension in the series. But it kinda gets distracted by some moe-ish characters (like the principal or the secretary). And it has some waifus for those into 2-D girls (I hope you are not).

Didn't find anything getting me off the anime. I like this season's opening too - pretty ominous song unlike other anime labeled "harem" (that's really because Harem is not the main genre of the story)

I'm basing this off all three series.
The background story behind each characters are deep and just thrilling. Yuuji, the guy who just looks like a generic average guy from a harem anime, is actually one of the most complex characters; he is haunted by the past, and his story reflects upon nihilism, existentialism, moral values, and countless other themes and motives.
And it doesn't cross the boundary with the LOLI character! (thank you... they are more like father-daughter relationship...)
Except two characters ruin the atmosphere - the principal and the secretary from JB's office. They are too "moe-ish" and just doesn't really feel like they belong there. Would have gave a 10/10 if not for this (it just felt way too out of place).
Enjoyment: 8/10

Way too thrilling. Action packed. I didn't want to skip any of it (which is pretty rare) until the last arc. Was better than most movies.

I kinda wrote a review on the Grisaia series as a whole. I gave 9 to S1 and S2. But as for this series, we have the first part which is a 10/10 for me (Yuuji's past) followed by mediocre "f**k physics and logic" arc. I just couldn't give this a high rating (mostly because the last art is 6 out of 10 episodes). But great series overall. I'd still recommend anyone watching this series to even watch until the ending to get a sense of resolve.
TL DR; Absolutely AMAZING series as a whole, containing the best of elements of top anime such as Death Note, Psycho-Pass, Attack on Titan, and other romance/harem-ish anime. Terrible last arc, but I'd still recommend to get the feel of being resolved. Low score due to it half of it being about the last arc.

Well, this show just sucks. There are just problems everywhere.
This show is an offense to just the mystery genre in general.
So why did I even finish this? Well, I actually dropped this quite many times, but decided to finish it given that I haven't watched much mystery anime at the time. And it was so bad so that I remember how terrible this is though it's been quite some time since I completed this anime.
It just feels like waste of words to write this for long so I'll just make each section shorter than my other reviews.
Story: 2/10

loads of characters without any depth. Many look the same so I couldn't tell which was which. And there are just too many characters.
The element of surprise was basically non-existent. As a mystery genre, it's just really bad when an average person like can me can see how the story will turn out.
Absolutely terrible pacing. Well it just takes forever for the story to start. And it just feels all drab just like the art style. It was an anime I didn't regret skipping some parts.
I personally thought I could have come up with a better story. This is just too far below average.
Art: 4/10
All are just dark, with no substance. The background just seems like that little work was done. Wasn't a big fan of it.
Sound: 8/10
Catchy opening. Didn't have major flaws.
Character: 2/10
All characters fit inside a stereotypical tropes.
I just didn't like the characters. Well, Shizuo and Celty were the only characters I found likable, and I still thought they were below average characters.
All are pretty shallow and lack substance.
Enjoyment: 2/10
I reserve 1/10 for worst things imaginable, so pretty much one of the lowest scores I give.
It was a waste of time.
Overall: 3/10
Well, it's not the worst anime.

So what is the essential element of comedy?
It would be the element of surprise, one would say.
Arakawa Under the Bridge is a comedy that breaks the concept of any expectations to outer space (and quite literally with introduction of Nino), something which modern comedy often lacks. Is this show hilarious? Absolutely.
And those confused with the romance genre tag: It's not a romantic-comedy like Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, but rather a comedy-romance, focused much on the first part than the latter.
But would I recommend this series to anybody I see? Yes. But would I recommend them to finish both seasons... No. In fact, I'd actually tell

them to drop this mid-series for a reason I will explain.
Story: 7/10
This is the type of comedy I just couldn't see coming. It mainly comes from characters who just blow expectations you'd see from an anime. But this type of anime has a critical flaw. As you watch more of this kind, the element of surprise dwindles, making each successive episode less funny than the rest. I've come to a problem with this section as I was watching the second season, and the comedy just wasn't fresh anymore. Either take a break from this series while you watch this or drop it. This isn't the best show for binge watching IMO.
When the element of surprise is fresh, the story is a 9/10. But with more exposure, it just becomes an average routinical comedy.
Art: Works fine to tell the story.
Sound: 8/10
Being a comedy, there just isn't need for many background tracks (although Konosuba revealed how much vibrance it could bring with just soundtracks). One thing that Kinda bugged me throughout the series was the fact that the VA for Kou was VA for Araragi and I just wasn't able to get Araragi out of my mind for the first few episodes. Well, it might be just me every time I hear Hiroshi Kamiya's voice.
Character: 9/10
The way that these characters are just out of the Earth (and one literally) is what makes this entire comedy work.
There is a diverse spectrum of characters, all of which are perfectly suited for comedy. And what is fantastic about this series that even the side characters have importance in the comedy, unlike how some cliche anime just throws them away or kills them for 3 seconds of emotion. Those who live under the Arakawa Bridge will make you laugh, I'm sure.
Enjoyment: 8/10
Pretty funny series overall. No complaints. I wouldn't say that this is the masterpiece of comedy, but it made me just laugh really.

Funny and above average anime that just makes you wonder what would happen next.
But drop this series once you feel like this gets repetitive. I personally gave a lower score to the second season because it just didn't feel as funny anymore. It wasn't much different from the first season, but being exposed to the characters for quite some time didn't make the series as funny as it could have been.
TL DR; Funny series that is an expert at the element of surprise. However, it will fade as you watch more episodes, and I'd recommend dropping this series once the comedy starts to feel like a routine.

Cowboy Bebop is a philosophical journey exploring the identity of human soul and the meaning of life through three main characters with haunting pasts (plus Ed and Ein). The crew journeys throughout the universe as bounty hunters, learning on the way the sense of camaraderie and sense of self-identity. And through thrilling Western fighting scenes and episodic stories of various individuals, Cowboy Bebop extends to the idea of death and existentialism.
So is Cowboy Bebop a Classic? Definitely.

The concept the Cowboy Bebop explores is, as I explained earlier, beyond

the surface. As one learn more about the characters' past, the more one delves into their shoes. And with an episodic format, Cowboy Bebop is a perfect anime in which you can drop and pick up late without losing important elements of the story. And any western movie fans would just love the action inside this series
But why isn't this a masterpiece in this department? The concept of reality and fiction is, I'd say, way to much mingled.
It just feels awkward that in the age of space travels, all the protagonists use pistols rather than futuristic weapons or just even any other assault weapons. What's even more absurd is the fact that the main characters leave without much injury even against hundreds of machine guns without any protective gear. The villains are always a terrible shot for some reason, and the protagonists are way to good of a shot. And some action inside space just breaks the laws of physics alongside casual logic. I know that Cowboy Bebop is more symbolical of a story than a realistic one, but the boundary of fantasy and reality needs to be clear.
TL DR; Nice symbolical concepts. But blurred line of reality and fantasy.

This was made before 2000. Amazing art for the time.
Sound: 9.5/10
Nice jazzy soundtracks that fit with the melancholy mood of the series. It even has an iconic opening theme that will almost never be forgotten by those who watch this series. Background music and sound effects are placed on right times.
Character: 9/10
The characters seem simple yet complicated. The interactions between the pure (Ed and Ein) and the impure (Spike, Jet, Faye) is just perfect for the exploration of the human soul. The characters are one-dimensional and complex at the same time, making them feel just so human.
They feel like people we can relate to rather than a character trapped in a different dimension.
Enjoyment:9/10
The action packed western style action anime was a good refreshment for me. But this show may not be the best for binge-watching as these are episodic. But the story adds up, so don't skip episodes. Just slowly watch this anime from time to time.
Overall: 9/10
Just an anime series any devoted anime fan should watch. The word "classic" perfectly fits this anime.

Edit: overall rating has been dropped from 6 to 4 after being compared to other anime. Story and character ratings. Story has dropped from 5 to 3 and character from 7 to 3.
TTGL, the classic, hailed masterpiece by many, felt like a long journey to me.
It was an anime that has surprised me and disappointed me at the same time. I haven't seen an anime which left me conflicted in quite some time. Had I watched 10 years earlier, I would have gave nothing but praise to this anime, as it has explored concepts that were never explored by anime during this time period.

is Gurren Lagann a "classic masterpiece"? In short answer, "No". The longer answer, "it depends on how you look at it".
But why a such low rating (6/10)?
First of all, I tend to give an average anime 6/10, so that places TTGL in the average section for me as of right now. It's has an interesting story but full of just flaws and character archetypes I couldn't stand.
It is also an anime that gets away by the phrase "cuz it's anime", which I generally don't like.
Just as a reference, I dropped this anime a few times in the early episodes then later decided to finish the anime. I finished the last three quarters of an anime in 3 days, and binge watched the second half in one sitting.
Story: 5/10
This was the hardest section for me to rate. TTGL had iconic quotes and masterpiece episodes which I would easily give 10/10 (episode 8/9), but also subpar cliches and character archetypes which I would place in the lower half.
TTGL is a story about a boy's journey to discover his existence, the universe, and all else beyond the horizon. It starts off comedic for the first quarter, delving into the adventures of a young boy Simon, and his idol Kamina. It soon turns into a battle for existence and the search for the human soul, adding on to the philosophical question behind meaning of life, something never really explored inside a shounen. However, the execution of this sagacious subject is below average.
There are just too much cliche character archetypes and stereotypical anime routines such as screaming for power or fan service plot or the classic power of friendship and on and on and on.
It's not that I wasn't a fan of quick transitions to the next battle, but how generic the transitions and the tension was.
And I just felt like that some side characters were being killed in the last battle to evoke a sense of emotion.
TL DR; Amazing concepts. Poor execution due to cliches.

An anime that excels in this department would be the Monogatari series. There are various theme song all evoking different emotions adding on to the layer of perfections. TTGL, however was meh in this field. I couldn't notice the soundtrack adding on to the layer of emotions (which could have been due to the story). And it had some mismatched timings for the opening theme song placement in my opinion.

Well characters in TTGL are mostly either way above average or cliche and subpar.
Kamina, despite feeling like a stereotypical careless hotshot guy, is far beyond that. He is a symbol for much more; he is definitely one of my favorite characters I have seen so far.
Simon is also a likeable character; although he may be the stereotypical "coward" character int he beginning, watching his growth was just satisfying.
And this show has a complex villain which we can relate to, which I never expected from an anime made in 2007.
And there are the cliche characters...
Kittan, is the stereotypical hotshot character in any shounen anime.
The missile launcher guy is the stereotypical anime guy who gets the main character into troubles.
Leeron, is a character that works as a plot armor.
Rossiu is the stereotypical "I can't bend the rules" guy.
Yoko felt like a fan service character to me... and was solely there to add romantic elements without depth.
And these cliche characters archetypes just wasn't an element of masterpiece.
Enjoyment: 6/10
I found myself skipping some section near the end due to cliche plot elements. But there were just scenes in which I could not take my eyes off from. The episodes are mix of 10/10 and 2/10s and kinda kept me alert to watch more. But I was kind of disappointed by the hype the name TTGL had in the anime community.
TL DR; TTGL is full of complex thematic elements with a mix of masterpiece and cliche archetypes.
It is not "classic masterpiece like Cowboy Bebop" due to inconsistent execution.
