Hey! I saw you asking about TTGL and figured I should give you a personal response rather than a forum post.
TTGL is absolutely AMAZING. It has great character development, it tugs at your heartstrings, and overall it's a very inspiring and uplifting series. One of the things that makes it so successful is that it combines shoujo, shounen, josei (series geared at older girls) and seinen (series geared at older guys) together, making it enjoyable for any audience. Like, I'm an older girl who really isn't fond of mechs, but I absolutely LOVED TTGL.
There are a couple things you need to keep in mind when watching the series though. I see you've never seen Evangelion, which is fine, but TTGL was made by the same group as Evangelion and is actually a counter to it. Evangelion is a deconstruction of the Mech genre, and Gurren Lagaan is a reconstruction of it. What this means is that where Evangelion tries to break down the genre and give you all the negative about it- EVERYTHING is turned into something negative and bad- TTGL gives you all the positive- EVERYTHING is turned into something good and/or positive, even death. So, there are a lot of things that seem INCREDIBLY ridiculous in the series, but it's supposed to be like that, that's part of it's message.
Sorry for the lengthy response- these are just some things that I kept in mind while watching TTGL and they really helped me enjoy it to the fullest. =)
