Merry Christmas!

I felt similarly about Ano Hana while watching it until I accepted the fact that I'm ok with cheap drama if I'm in just the right mood. I'll often upgrade or downgrade a show after a second or tenth viewing. So many of my favorite shows are strewn with cheesy ploys. Kinda like watching a really bad "B" horror comedy that you just enjoy down to your soul. You almost resent yourself afterwards.

Sometimes you put up with so much cheese or questionable episodes just to get to the scenes that make you adore anime. For me Clannad is a good example. I really have to force myself to watch a lot of season one. I think I gave it a 7 and I'm never sure if that's rounded up or down. It depends on what episode I'm on at the time. Then there's season 2, which I gave a 10... rounded down. Ano Hana was like that too. It took some forgiveness to appreciate the charm.

Hotarubi no Mori e?? Never heard of it but I'll check it out asap! I'm watching Steins;Gate right now which is incredible from start to um... episode 19. lol I'll have to finish it to know about the other 6 eps. Just started it Sunday. Other stand out shows that you haven't watched and I've seen recently-ish would be Spice and Wolf II. I had to buy the Blurays for both seasons and finally moved it into my top 5 just because I can't stop re-watching it.. and I love it every time. Holo also got bumped all the way to my second favorite character! You have to watch the dub, though. It's miles better than the Japanese cast. I know, I know... but it's true. Kure-nai was interesting and enjoyable. B Gata H Kei was smutty fun. Planetes was so damn hard for me to get through episode 1 (tried off and on for like two years) but once I forced myself to cram down a couple eps I watched the series three times!!

Oh!!! RideBack!!! Just watch the opening on YouTube or something. Sooo awesome! Especially with the subtle symbolism. I thought I'd hate it but I'll likely buy it. It's more about "cool" than substance. It's one of those shows where you learn more about the heroine from her expressions and actions than from dialogue. Rin doesn't say much to other characters but she has a vibrant inner dialogue. Somehow, the fact that she spoke with her actions made the show unique and the character memorable.

I'm sorry about the crazy rant. It's just been such a long time.

*revives from the dead*

Hi there! Where to begin? (I'm a geek too so I don't know these things) Apparently I loved Ano Hana a whole lot more than you did. I guess giving it a six really isn't all that bad given your score curve but I really enjoyed it. Is that a bad sign?

Birdy was a blast, too! I see what you mean about it not being "particularly original or amazing" it really was still a fun short series. I know that was a long time ago (we both finished it last year).

They're from the anime "Kaze no Stigma," (where I actually prefer the dub for once - the girl's voice is so annoying in the original lol) and the characters are Kazuma and Ayano. ^^

Your love for FMP! is incomplete. How come you haven't read Sigma yet?
hal89 Jun 6, 2012 6:01 AM
If you do, then it is probably a very well suited show for you! I'm really happy you seem to like it, since everyone I know who ever watched were like, "meh, I keep falling asleep"... I need to get new friends

I did the mistake of watching the Bebop movie once ages ago, just to kind of see what it was about, and at that time it didn't really inspire me to watch the rest of the installment. (I must admit the whole Space Cowboy concept also seemed pretty retarded, haha) I see now how important the rest of the series is in order to enjoy the movie. I just love how our crew just goof around, always mess things up, blame each other, but still somehow stick together. I get some real "Wild Arms" vibes :)

Oh and btw, I had my third exam today, last one Saturday, then it's summer! I'm saving the final episodes till then, woo

(now I must end this comment, cause I'm still procrastinating, hehe)

I know how you feel - Never watched a sports anime myself. I think you might be putting a bit too much thought into the Karuta matches, subconsciously, which is probably because it wasn't the right anime for you to watch right now (or maybe ever?). During the Karuta matches, my attention was drawn towards the players and how the match made them feel at every time, and not so much the game itself. Enough about that, if it's not for you, then I think you should just leave it be :)

I rarely recommend Casshern Sins, although (and due to) it is probably the one series that has affected me most amongst all others. It's practically the reason I got into anime, which makes my point of view very subjective. If you are ready for all the dialogue and the slow progress, then I'm really, really happy for you. Hope you enjoy it, but I'm not expecting anything. Let me know what you think if you feel like it, I'm pretty curious.

I just watched ep 3 of Cowboy Bebop. Feeling a bit ashamed I haven't watched it earlier, because I was so determined I wouldn't like it. Really feel like watching one more, but I guess I should be studying for exams.. Sigh, I love to procrastinate :)

I see, I've heard the same reasoning from different people, and am finding it hard to understand. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I watched it while it was airing, and thus had to wait a week to watch the next episode, making the Karuta matches exciting and less tiresome. That and the previous season didn't really bring a lot of other good series to watch (in my opinion), which made me look foreward to it a lot :)

Great stuff :) I enjoyed it tremendously. I'm aware though that opinions are very split about it. Let me know what you think, if you remember to do so. - Gotta love Birdy right!

If you haven't done so in your absence, you must watch Chihayafuru :)

That's the highest compability I've seen in ages. I should probably snitch a few titles off your list :)

Thanks! Haibane Renmei is indeed amazing. Going by your profile I think you'll have no problem getting into it. Make sure you don't read up about it beforehand though, if you have a habit of doing that. It's best to start it without any preconceptions.

"I actually would like to re-read it again sometime because I have a feeling my opinion on it would be very different now. I tried reading Heart of Darkness by Conrad when I was 14 and basically tossed it aside after one chapter, but then when I read for a college English class when I was 18 I fell in love with it, so it's interesting to see how one's tastes change over time. "

Heh, yes, I read "Heart of Darkness" when I was 17 myself! A very appropriate age, in retrospect.

"Wendy...hmmmm looks like it's worth checking out, Peter Pan was one of my favorites as a kid so a dark, more adult take sounds intriguing."

I'm a huge fan of the author, Jiro Matsumoto, which is why I picked it up initially. I was actually a bit surprised at how relatively normal and restrained it was compared to his other works!

Great manga though, and I loved the ending.

"Reviews on the site can be...frequently fairly untrustworthy in my opinion since the masses in general seem to think Harry Potter and Twilight are the height of reading pleasure. No offence to fans of those series, I actually happen to like Harry Potter but it's light reading and as soon as people start trying to get me to take it seriously...* head desk*"

It's probably people who read few books, and even fewer serious works, and feel secretly ashamed by it, so they try to push obvious works for children they've completed as something serious and important.

You see the exact same thing with live action films and even anime/manga on this site; people, some of them in their 20s, arguing that a simple, cliched work primarily meant to appeal to 8 year-olds is something more than that.

Some of them are good or even great (Star Wars, The Dark Knight) and others aren't, but they're light entertainment for the kids, even if adults can enjoy them, too.

Anyways, funny story about Harry Potter;

When I was in high school, I mentioned to my parents how we watched the first two movies in school (one in Spanish class!), they were both utter shit, and how I'm sure the books were equally horrendous garbage.

To this my father told me; "Actually, they might not be that bad; they're just fairy tales for little kids, after all. Just fun childrens' stories...there's nothing wrong with that."

A few months later, my father decided to read the books. As he was doing it, he would often complain to my mother and I about how these damned works were teaching kids the wrong things!

He was especially annoyed that Harry is a relative slacker, never works hard, and yet (magically!) is the best and most successful sorcerer.

Thus, my father was forced to admit that he was wrong in assuming the works had any real worth!

"Oh! And I read your review on Full Metal Panic and found myself agreeing with most of your points (except in regards to the comedy, because FMP did make me laugh), I love the series to bits but it does have serious flaws. My major grips would be as you pointed out, the plot is all over the place. And the sudden switches between school comedy and 'serious' action were frustrating, it was like they couldn't make up their mind about what type of show FMP! was suppose to be."

I watched the series and wrote my review several years ago. Nowadays, there's no way I would be anywhere near as kind (or give it something as high as a 4), or even have the patience to sit through more than a couple of episodes! Heh.
