Trigger may have outdone all of their previous works with this, there are nearly no flaws in the production of Edgerunners. However the twists were all kind of obvious, the character deaths could be seen from a mile away. There was only really one that surprised me, being the second one. At points the show whips out it's massive throbbing exposition and just flops it on the table, making for very stiff scenes. A minor flaw but consistent one is that every time there's a call, the text seems to be translated very poorly, with characters repeating themselves constantly, at first I thought it was
...
stylization but it really went off the rails towards the end, and I'm pretty sure it was either a mistake or a stupid decision in the translation department to make it "cooler" or something. The show is also too short, this being linked the exposition problem, but it also has more drastic ramifications, being a lack of impact at times. People die left and right, and while minor characters are fleshed out quickly enough to serve their purpose, the major characters kind of had everything stacked at once, or not enough generally. Overall most characters could have used a little more work. Finally, although I understand what the ending was going for, it just didn't really work for me. I was just kind of disappointed, a lot of this sourced from previously mentioned points , especially the overall pacing and obvious twists. Overall it's worth a watch, though how fast it goes is an issue for story reasons, it also makes it easy to bang out in a couple hours.
Spoiler-ish stuff below, don't read if you want to be 100% blind.
From the very start, or at least after the first episode I figured that they would die, and honestly I was hoping that the show would surprise me with a happy ending, or rather a more optimistic one, rather than the more negative one that I saw coming ever since episode 2.

It really, tries to be deep. I assume they were attempting to mirror the holocaust, what with friends and neighbors being split apart due to differences, as well as similarities to the German military at the time on top of other things. I might be being a bit surface level, but the fact that it's hair colour that divides them is fucking stupid as shit, I get that it's trying to be like "Look at how little it takes to turn humans against one another", but like it's so fucking stupid. At points there's mention of skin tone, but it seems as though the animators
...
didn't pick up on that and used the same tone for all of the characters mostly. Again, seemingly trying to go for the how little it takes route but again, it just seems incredibly cheesy. It repeatedly points out the hypocrisy of Lena, but while the 86 group seems to warm up and understand that there's nothing really to do, other characters are used to repeat the message of "Lena is a hypocrite". Which obviously yes to an extent, but we're also seeing it framed as though we should side with said hypocrite on many occasions. And due to the nature of her hypocrisy, the writers are essentially being hypocritical. I find it ridiculous as well that they keep acting as though people would believe that the 86 are descended from pigs, anyone with a basic understanding of the fundamental nature of evolution could tell you the sheer improbability of that occurring. Not even Nazi propaganda attempted to dehumanize the Jewish people to that extent, yes they are attempting to mirror the propaganda which compared the Jewish immigrants to rats, but also there's a massive difference in comparison and going against the very basic science that even 6 year olds understand. It keeps bouncing back and forth from perspectives trying to be nuanced, but it never actually delves in deep enough to go beyond surface level, so it comes off as an incoherent mess. The addition of the things like the odd reasons for discrimination as well as the evolution bit, end up making what little worth can be found just feel like a misstep in an otherwise ridiculous premise.
The animation is fine overall but there is sloppy cgi in some places. The sound ranges from ok to really bad at points, peaking at odd times and going blastisimo at others. Also occasionally the mixing can drop off the face of a cliff and dialogue may be difficult to interpret.

The writing and animation completely killed the show. Basically every chance they get, ie characters turning around or even the slightest zoomout, it looks like Berserk 2016 lite. When it comes to the writing, the emphasis on the "gamer" mentality kills it. The scene after Akina's first match in the tourny is especially abysmal, it effectively makes me ashamed to play video games. They haven't experienced enough character development considering it's been around 6 years in the show. The two main characters behave like they're 6 year olds with severe adhd. Even in the final episode, where Harou is spurred into action, it looks absolutely
...
dreadful, the animation falls off of a fucking cliff. It also just does not feel like Harou has earned redemption in any way, he acts like a piece of shit for 8 episodes then is like "whoops it's ok tho right?" And for some reason all is forgiven, with zero consequences. It feels like it tries to mimic some of the emotion and story in 5 Centimeters Per Second, in it's general theme. But it just completely missed the mark.
