Preliminary (8/11 eps)
It really, tries to be deep. I assume they were attempting to mirror the holocaust, what with friends and neighbors being split apart due to differences, as well as similarities to the German military at the time on top of other things. I might be being a bit surface level, but the fact that it's hair colour that divides them is fucking stupid as shit, I get that it's trying to be like "Look at how little it takes to turn humans against one another", but like it's so fucking stupid. At points there's mention of skin tone, but it seems as though the animators didn't pick up on that and used the same tone for all of the characters mostly. Again, seemingly trying to go for the how little it takes route but again, it just seems incredibly cheesy. It repeatedly points out the hypocrisy of Lena, but while the 86 group seems to warm up and understand that there's nothing really to do, other characters are used to repeat the message of "Lena is a hypocrite". Which obviously yes to an extent, but we're also seeing it framed as though we should side with said hypocrite on many occasions. And due to the nature of her hypocrisy, the writers are essentially being hypocritical. I find it ridiculous as well that they keep acting as though people would believe that the 86 are descended from pigs, anyone with a basic understanding of the fundamental nature of evolution could tell you the sheer improbability of that occurring. Not even Nazi propaganda attempted to dehumanize the Jewish people to that extent, yes they are attempting to mirror the propaganda which compared the Jewish immigrants to rats, but also there's a massive difference in comparison and going against the very basic science that even 6 year olds understand. It keeps bouncing back and forth from perspectives trying to be nuanced, but it never actually delves in deep enough to go beyond surface level, so it comes off as an incoherent mess. The addition of the things like the odd reasons for discrimination as well as the evolution bit, end up making what little worth can be found just feel like a misstep in an otherwise ridiculous premise.
The animation is fine overall but there is sloppy cgi in some places. The sound ranges from ok to really bad at points, peaking at odd times and going blastisimo at others. Also occasionally the mixing can drop off the face of a cliff and dialogue may be difficult to interpret.
