And now.... Welcome to "Tha Komi Zone(tm)...."
After taking a long break, I started buying and rereading Komi-san physically, it's been very refreshing! Volume by volume, the books are really well paced, and they only seem to get better and better as more characters are introduced. I think I like literally all the characters?? Even the page and panel layout is paced very well! Manbagi is introduced (im pretty sure) in the next one I gotta get, volume 10, and the focus or something seems to shift somewhat once that happens, which isn't a bad thing; but all this is to say that this '1st phase', volumes 1-9, peak for me around vol 8, vol 8 was reaaaallly great. Fun new characters, new friendships, background characters start getting along, social webs broaden across the board, new dynamics and stuff, its so fun!!
I like the official translation more than I thought, for the most part. I wish they wouldn't convert money into dollars, though, what do they think I am, some kinda dummy? I know what yen is, jeez. Actually I think they also changed the heights of the characters to be more american-sized, at least in the early chapter where Komi gets her height measured.
I wish they included honorifics, like would anyone even be confused really? Even total anime noobs are gonna need to understand this basic stuff if they're gonna get into the whole culture of it all, you know? Honorifics are important, they provide lots of context with very little. And why do they spell Komi's first name as Shoko instead of Shouko or something? That's a totally minor nitpick, but they're pronounced differently...
Why's Najimi got silver hair when she's clearly a blonde? Why's Yamai got brown hair when she's ALSO clearly blonde? That's just mangaka personal tastes though, there's no accounting for that. Najimi should def have been blonde tho. She's blonde to me >:( it's important >>:(
Najimi's so great, Najimi's so hot CUTE!! I love these characters a bunch, there's so many great ones. Tadano's a champ, it's funny how he feels like an unsung hero when he's the main character lol, he puts up with a lot. Of course Komi-san is very great, what a great concept for a character. But also like, all the side characters seem to be so good too, like there's Katai, there's the puppy girl, Ominene(? big sis girl), sleepy girl Otori, even Yamai, I think she's really funny sometimes. Then the family member characters, like Komi's dad is a total legend, and her brother, and her mother, all great... tadano's lil sis is great... Even Yamai's friend with the fang was super cute, even when she was a background character. She just got a chapter for herself in Vol 9, and so she's fun now too. There aren't many characters I don't like much, maybe like the competitive girl? Not the firey one, but the one who makes ugly faces, she's not very spectacular. I love that inexplicably, there's just a ninja in the class. Actually come to think of it, isn't this the manga where it mentions right at the beginning that the school enrolls students based on how weird and specific they are? That could've easily been another manga tho, but I'm pretty sure..........
...ok yeah, i went and checked and it does say that indeed, so that's why all the characters are weird and gimmicky. I love being able to get up and go check something like that, physically. Makes the purchase feel better justified!
Wow I sure did just write a lot about Komi-san, I didn't really expect this! I guess I'll put it in a bunch of collapses to tidy it out the way. If you got this far, hi!! Why'd u read all that? Prob u didn't, I bet.
Hey actually, if u did get this far, I literally just found out theres gonna bve a komi-san anime in october and im flippin out omg im so excited!! done my the studio that did the new pokemon with all the great animation, and they did pokemon origins, and cardfight vanguard, which i liked, and they did yokai watch which i dunno much about, but wow omg! this is so cool especially since im on a huge komi-san kick right now! I'm basically gonna auto-love it, its gonna be great!!!

In other (older) news: Mob Psycho is fantastic!! It feels to me like a natural evolution of One Punch Man, and improves on it in a few big ways. OPM was great, but Saitama seemed a little limited in terms of character growth. Mob has a very similar demeanor to Saitama, but being much younger and going through puberty gives the character a lot more room to develop and change, which he does throughout the two seasons. Saitama being so absolutely overwhelmingly powerful seems to become more and more of a hinderance to the writing, forcing that show to focus more and more on its side cast as it goes on. (I haven't seen S2 of OPM but I hear it isn't as good; I know it doesn't look as nice, and I suspect that the show drifts even further from Saitama, since he's sort of one-dimentional; I hear he doesn't even fight in it that much, he isn't feeling up to it or whatever, which makes sense for the plot but damn.) Mob also isn't as suffocatingly overpowered as Saitama, especially at the start of the show, which allows each massive action scene to feel super justified, at least in my opinion. I dunno, I liked OPM tho, it's not like I didn't.
Mob's side cast is top-notch, filled with charming, believable characters that all gel together well and contribute towards a colourful and well thought-out setting. The major stand-out has gotta be Reigen, who I was absolutely endeared to by the end of S1, and who consistently stole the show throughout as a phenominally smartly written, charming character that we could all strive to be more like. What a great guy!!!! Legend.
Most other characters are similarly well done - intense rivals become close friends. Friends are total bros and great guys you want to hang out with. Girls are cute while still being down-to-earth and honestly sorta plain, in a believable and endearing sort of way. Good girls. The characters are also just really visually well designed, and the unique powers are pretty good too, which is to be expected from the creator of One Punch Man. He has a great design sense. Or maybe it's the studio doing the heavy lifting, I dunno, I haven't checked out either manga to be fair (Tangent: didn't realise how big a fan of Studio Bones I was til I looked through their stuff and saw a bunch of really fantastic shows, great job Bones!!).
I'm now eagerly hoping for a Season 3 to wrap things up - we've got a fantastic setting, character roster and set of themes, but some things are still left up in the air. Mostly I wanna know which girl he'll end up with, I hope he chooses one of his nice friends, his crush girl is sorta lame and doesn't do anything. He should date the weird girl that looks like him, she's goofy and nice and enthusiastic about psychic stuff. Camera girl is a little too much of a troublemaker, and what's with her cult stuff?? Alien girl is good.
Fanart by AfroNinja360, this really captures her attitude and appeal, I feel like. I really love this!!

Anime is saved by Eizouken!!!! Never skip the intro, never skip the outro. These girls are fantastic, this passion is through the roof!!! Can this show do any wrong?? Current research points to No! Keep your eyes on this space to find out if I added it to my favourites list prematurely (unlikely)!!! (edit: yeah no this show rules 10/10 for sure, it was phenominal throughout)
...I thought I would add some elaboration here, after writing out a reply to someone specific detailing some of the reasons I adore this show already. I figured I would put what I wrote to them, in here:
"Basically it's a celebration of animation as a medium, exploring the techniques and tools that go into creating expressive, engrossing animation, following three delightful characters with fantastic inter-personal chemistry and a passion for various aspects of the industry. Soundtrack, setting, character and mecha design, voice acting, animation, art direction is all superb. If you love animation, I can't recommend it enough. 6th episode coming out soon and it's already on my favourites list."
Stoic Mamamori protects her flightless baby chick. Oh that's kinda creepy looking when the pupils are so small... Oh well (right click -> View Image to see full size!)

Recently read Starving Anonymous, a crazy horror manga which offers such interesting plot points, monster designs and lore hints at such a breezy pace that I found it pretty much impossible to stop! I had the whole thing finished in two sittings...
This manga nails the art of the cliffhanger perfectly; each chapter ends with some kind of crazy new thing that makes you immediately turn the page, except the final chapter of each book, which gives you a good place to stop (presumably so the original audience could bear the wait for the next book).
I'm not usually even into horror, but I just found it all totally facinating. It's pretty gory, and pretty creepy, but unless you're 100% put off by the sound of that, I'd recommend giving it a try. If you don't like where it's going, you can always close the tab. Maybe you'll be like me, and go in expecting to close it after 10 pages, but instead read most of it all at once~
I don't wanna spoil the monster designs or anything, so I've just gone for the striking front cover of volume 1 for this one.
