I know it's been years since you wrote it, but I just wanted to drop by and say that your review of Monster is fantastic. I found myself nodding in approval all throughout reading it, and you helped me pinpoint what I feel was this show's worst sin: lack of focus on the main characters, and the lack of emotional attachment resulting from it. I similarly went into Monster expecting it to be an even darker and more mature version of Death Note, but in my mind the two aren't even close on any level (aside from release dates, maybe).
I wish more reviews were written like yours, tbh; it wasn't overly wordy or pretentious, and your arguments are sound.
Good Monster review. I'm reading the manga and just started watching the anime in conjunction, and I agree with all of your points, with emphasis on the bit about not caring enough about the characters. Lunge and Eva are really the only two characters that have interested me so far; everyone else is...well, bland, for lack of a better word.
Monster is alright (I'd probably give it a 6 or 7 as of right now), but I completely agree that it's nowhere near the masterpiece that people say it is.
Watching "Monster" right now. Funny, that I have nearly the same thoughts as you do, but with drastically different emphases on each of them. I'm about to put it 8 or 9 I guess, I still have to see how they wrap the whole thing up. I'm getting what I expected to get so far.
TL;DR I mostly disagree, but I've pressed "like".
