I've come to seek the council of an Atelier expert. I saw you talking about the series on twitter, a sight that I would rather die than make an account on, and wanted to ask. I recently bought Atelier Lulua on a whim and wondered if I made a horrible choice as as far as getting into the series goes. The only other one I've played is Atelier Annie on the DS about ten years ago. I hear that one's kind of an oddball/spinoff so it's probably not a good first introduciton to the series.

One more thing. The lack of Princess Tutu on your PTW list makes me sad.

Hello! I know nothing about making YouTube videos, but I'm a fairly prolific reviewer here on MAL. By which I mean that I churn out loads of poorly written reviews, largely covering obscure hentai, that nobody will ever read. Anyways, I just wanted to stop by and say I enjoy your YouTube videos. Even though our affinity and anime tastes are quite different. Our average cumulative rating is actually quite close, but I tend to dislike most of the shows you like and vice-versa. I don't care about that stuff though, I'm just glad you're passionate about your opinions and make fun videos!

Hello random anime YouTuber!! I have been having a bored lazy day on this unassuming Saturday and exhausted my YouTube subscription feed, so when I saw your The Rise and Fall of Gaia Online video recommended to me, I thought, what the hell, I used to use that website (in a very light capacity, mainly since my first ex-girlfriend was into it), and I was kind of curious what the state of it has been since it's been well over a decade since I really used it.... BUT! That's not why I'm here. I continued on to watch The Rise and Fall of the Yaoi Paddle (mostly because of this picture of a friend posing with one such paddle that he picked up for one of his friends during our trip to Anime Expo 2009 under a much-too-appropriately named street sign; yes, the weeb is strong with this one). Then I watched five more videos that seemed interested for various reasons, subscribing to you somewhere along the way, and then came to the video that brought me here: "Why I Don't Like My Hero Academia and 9 More of Your Favorite Anime: An Ode to my Unpopular Opinions"

Yeah, so I was kind of thinking of posting in the comments of your YouTube video as I watched the video, but it was a pretty old video and then you mentioned the link to your MAL profile at the end! Well, weirdly enough, while I heavily shy away from the MAL forums (having 206 total post in my 10 years on this site), talking back and forth with people directly via profile comments has become a bit of a past-time of mine on here. Yeah, weird, right? And I usually write a LOT, so if you actually have the time or interest, strap in!

So yes, I'd like to respond to your video on your unpopular opinions, one series at a time. Though, I will preface this by saying that I do love a lot of different kinds of anime of many different types and rarely truly HATE entertainment. So relative to my tastes, if I give something less than a "7" score on here, then that thing has done something wrong by me, as I'm at least getting bored at that point. I mean, I maintain a personal Top 100 Anime/Manga Series List and every single thing on it has at least one entry in its franchise that I score a "10" or "9".... Anyway, so on to your video items!

My Hero Academia: Yeah, I kind of love this series. It's currently #46 on my working Top 100 List. Yeah, by the way, I keep a working Excel file of my Top 100 and this series got a slight boost since my last posted version from a year ago because I've now decided to take out standalone anime movies and they'll be part of their own list from this point on (probably a Top 50). Anyway, I can see your reasoning and honestly, I haven't been super excited yet while watching the latest 4th season of the series. My love for the series might be waning and it could go the way of the "Index" series after its 3rd season caused it to drop out of my Top 100....

Toradora!: Hahaha!! Okay, this is my #4 favorite series of all time and Taiga is my #2 favorite character of all time (right behind Kyon from the Suzumiya Haruhi series). BUT! I love me a good tsundere and you apparently don't. So yeah, just not your thing. Even if Taiga "gets better", that probably don't matter for someone who can't get into her core character trait. So no hard feelings here. PS: Rei Ayanami is creepy. XD

Sword Art Online: Yeah, I dropped it after 7 episodes, so absolutely no arguments here. As far as anime that I used to love in my younger years that are actually bad, I can't honestly think of very many good examples. I mean, Sailor Moon first got me into anime and I'm not anywhere near as big of a fan of it as I was back then, but I wouldn't really call it all that a "bad" series either. Again, I don't typically "hate" much entertainment. I'm probably more forgiving of things than I should be.

Tokyo Ghoul: I dropped this after 3 episodes, so also no major arguments here. Although on a side note, the "Mary Sue/Gary Stu" label kind of makes me cringe a bit, kind of like how the "OC" and "MC" abbreviations do as well. Kind of a personal thing that I won't get into. XD

Black Butler: Ahhh.... So the only reason that I finished the entire first season of this was because I was watching it as part of the 2018 Anime Watching Challenge here on MAL. If it wasn't for that, I probably would have dropped it 5 or so episodes in. I kind of figured I "should" watch it because it was a pretty popular series at a time, but man I was pretty damn bored during most of my time with it. And the comic relief moments seemed soooo awkward.

Akame ga Kill!: I've been having a problem with having way too many shows stuck in "Watching" and On-Hold status, and Akame ga Kill! was one of them. I somewhat recently finally finished it and it was just "good" by my standards. I talked to a friend of mine about the series who had read the manga and turns out that a lot was changed in the anime, especially near the end. Turns out that at least 3 major characters in the series that died in the anime didn't actually die in the original manga! I'm somewhat tempted to try giving the manga a read, but what was there isn't quite enough motivation.

Elfen Lied: Hey! Back to another series that I actually love! ^_^ It's currently #53 on my working anime/manga series list. Honestly, I wouldn't call it nothing but a gore-fest.... It's also some great misery porn! Yeah, you say YOU'RE old, but based on how old you said you were when you watched Black Butler, I have at least 10 years on you. So around when I watched Elfen Lied for the first time (in the mid-2000s), I was about as old as you are now. Yay math! And I'd actually re-watched it at least twice since then and I've read the manga series as well. And yes, nostalgia and "shit tastes" might play big parts in my love for this series, but I did get really sucked into the tragedy of the different characters in this series. HOWEVER! While I will not fault you for not liking Elfen Lied, I most definitely WILL fault you for implying that Another is a better anime by a significant measure.... Like, what?? That is honestly one of the most bland, boring shows I've seen in recent memory that I had the displeasure of slogging through. All of the characters had nothing interesting going for them and the "story" felt utterly pointless. Plus, the gore in Another always came off as hilarious instead of scary or unsettling. I don't really get the love for that series at all.... On the up side, Higurashi is my #3 favorite series so you at least have that going for you! ^_^

Fullmetal Alchemist (2003): I mostly 100% agree with you here. Brotherhood has made the old FMA anime totally obsolete. The only thing that I don't really agree on is the early episodes of Brotherhood. Maybe it's because I'd finally trudged through all of the old FMA anime for the first time about 2 years before Brotherhood came out so that was still somewhat fresh in my mind, but I didn't really feel like the early episodes of Brotherhood were all that rushed. I actually thought they were well balanced and cut out some fat that didn't really need to be there. But yeah, other than that, totally agree here (Brotherhood is my current #14 series by the way).

Hetalia: Hey! The only series from your video that I haven't seen/read a single bit from!! And, I have no desire to ever watch/read it. I hear it can be funny if you're a world history buff, but I am just about the farthest thing from such. Pass!

Serial Experiments Lain: Ahhh, well, this was actually on the far tail end of my first Top 100 List from 2016 right at #100, but it has since fallen off. I'd really like to re-watch it at some point since it has been.... over 15 years since I last watched it?? And I'd only watched it once. I'd be interested to see how it holds up with how technology has changed since it first came out. Probably not well. But yeah, for me, when it comes to the Yoshitoshi ABe x Yasuyuki Ueda works, I much prefer Haibane Renmei (my #7 favorite series), though you don't seem to be a particularly huge fan of that anime either. =P

And as far as talking shit about your favorites.... Nope, I'm not going to go after One Piece. While I'm not really into it myself, I don't really have much against it other than the fact that the art (and the 4Kids first exposure) initially turned me off to it, and don't have much to say about it since I haven't consumed a considerable amount of it (though your One Piece video still amused me). The big boy I'm going after is....

Death Note: Oh god.... I have conflicted feelings about Death Note. If you're interested in the long story, I wrote this blog post 10 years ago about my confusion of Death Note's popularity which goes into most of my problems with the series. But the main gist of it is that I read the manga first and while I mostly thought the story was interesting, I didn't really get into any of the characters other than Matsuda. Then when I watched the anime soon after, I was nearly bored to tears because the story had absolutely no replay value for me. Compare this to Higurashi which I've lovingly watched the two main seasons of at least 4 times and would gladly watch again (wish I had more time to re-watch my favorites). Higurashi just has a much more interesting story with more layers to it and has VASTLY more interesting and lovable characters. Although I still gave the Death Note anime a 6, I'd probably give it a 4 if it wasn't for the great production values. Maybe I'll go nuts one of these days and start giving harsher scores to things on here, but that seems like a lot of work for little benefit.

Other than Death Note, I did write an old blog post about some of the anime others seem to like more than me, but that is a solid 9 years old. I might want to write an update at some point. Other than the stuff on that list (and the previously mentioned Another), probably my biggest least-favorite-anime-others-love thing would probably be Grave of the Fireflies. Man, I actually get pretty emotional with a lot of anime, "crying like a bitch" pretty often. And during most of my early life as an anime fan I heard about how Grave of the Fireflies is THE SADDEST ANIME EVER!!!! I finally watched the movie in late 2014 and didn't cry a single tear. I was mostly just annoyed and ended up kind of hating the main boy in the movie. It was his own pride that got him and his sister killed. Maybe I'd feel bad for the sister if she had ANY character development. Other than that, yeah, war sucks. A lot of people died in WWII. Since I didn't connect with the two kids, I was mainly left feeling like I was watching a boring educational documentary that I might have been forced to watch in high school history class. All that was missing was a pencil and paper so I can take notes for the eventual paper I'd have to write reacting to it or some shit. Like Death Note, I ended up giving Grave of the Fireflies a 6, but would honestly also give this a 4 if it was based 100% on my true feelings for it. In this case, the production and historical relevance saved its ass. And while I'm, again, not big on history, I do truly love another WWII anime movie: In This Corner of the World. This is pretty much everything that I would have wanted Grave of the Fireflies to be, because I actually connected with and cared about the characters!

Anyway, I should probably go ahead and end this since it's already stupidly long and I'm not sure if you'd ever even try to read it since you don't seem to get on MAL very often. But yeah, no hard feelings at all. Everyone has different tastes. And I look forward to watching more of your videos!! Have a wonderful day! ^_^

Couldn't resist the temptation of clicking on a video about gaia's economy and then fell further down the rabbit hole of yaoi paddles and light novel title length. Thanks for the high caliber informtainment!
