It's partially a "cute girls" trope, but both shows are not easy to watch or to be taken lightly. One of the girls is always, physically, out of this world. The themes in the two shows hover around friendship, memories, difficult choices, loss, and struggle against a kind of exterior evil that lurks around constantly. A similar sensation is to be expected when watching Figure 17 and Uta~kata.

Heartwarming shows about very weird professions (witchcraft and voice healing) and about some training the main characters receive in order to adhere there. They also cover daily happy life and friendships. They're both funny, original, and of good quality. Good times, good vibes.

I know it's a weird one, but the two mangas talk about families that are weirdly arranged, and, surprisingly, it works. Chapters are heart-wrenching, and sometimes mind-blowing or breathtaking, with an omnipresent danger hiding behind obvious comedic elements. And, of course, in "Rojica to Rakkasei" there is a chapter about a big peanut that miraculously came to life. Peanut stories are always worth reading.

Not only Shimeji Simulation and Ashizuri Aquarium are surreal and unfathomable experience, but both manga seem to have one recurrent theme: fish. It's omnipresent and helps to understand the reality which is dare I say, "in aqua scribis". With a good sense of humor, we are swimming through the main characters' adventures and we contemplate the authors' creativity.

Two completely different stories about girls (or just anthropomorphic beings) being rejected and constantly chased out of society. You'll feel bad reading it.

The Earth's in danger because something's approaching (or just waiting ominously)? People and animals working together in order to prevent it or make it happen? If you are interested in such fantasy course of events, you may find both manga interesting.

Horimiya was the only anime that had similar vibes to Tsurezure Children and made me feel like watching one of the best short romance anime, again. Cute couples, lots of love, smiles, feels, fun and overall good time. Watch both in order to become a teenager in love once again!

Goal setting, obsession, rivalry and fair competition, getting better, losing, winning, and many more. But there's maybe the most important thing to it. A last chance to shine and succeed. Not everyone will make it. They're young but it's probably their last time. Both shows draw different line between having fun and assuming serious, professional approach.

Cute girls drawing manga and becoming friends, basically and simply. These shows focus not only on cuteness of main mangakas. There is (I suppose) some technical stuff that you can get familiar with and pretend that you know the industry and the workshop. Both anime are kinda fun to watch, at least as an undemanding pastime.

Bunch of cute girls talking about everyday things in a cynical way? Yes. Cute girls having fun in a creative way? Sure. Girls that have chosen a very particular, weird career path... like maybe rakugo performers or fairies? Yeah. Beautiful similarities, equal surprises.

...then you might like Non Non Biyori add

I make this recommendation mainly for extremely cute girls living in the countryside. Cuteness, slowness and wondrous landscapes, that's probably all that both of the shows have in common. Few heart-wrenching moments, too, maybe. Figure 17 has so much of above-mentioned elements that you can easily disregard the redundant sci-fi motifs.

Aria and Violet strongly connotate the word "animation" and are renowned for it, explicitly or implicitly. What is more important, these two great anime are about delivering letters or, more importantly, feelings. As abstract as it may sound, some little side stories will make you cry. In uncanny worlds where humanity is quite different than ours: feelings remain the same, and message delivery system never changes, whether you are a post-war "doll" or a human living on Mars.

Equally dumb and equally intertextual. Milk-chan and Popuko-chan are equally aggressive and fun-dimensional. The one main difference: Oh! Super Milk-chan is schematic, following the same pattern in every episode. Popuko and Pipimi are just unpredictable.

There is a motif of working for a lingerie brand in both shows. Furthermore, we can see two school clubs which are semi-legal and gather some girls, seemingly hostile towards each other. They all want to achieve certain goals that can't really be discussed officially at school.

A boy from Earth and his girlfriend from outer space. Sounds familiar? Although "Narue no Sekai" isn't exactly an early 2000s direct reinterpretation of Urusei Yatsura, but it takes some liberties to expand the same concept and the result is kinda... heart-warming!

You wouldn't guess it, would you? It's just the German culture we're speaking of. The two settings included. "Princess Tutu" offers us a big reference to Gellert, Brothers Grimm and, perhaps, Gerhart Hauptmann... and to many more. "Monster" feels like a very good european thriller movie. Apart from German inspiration, both shows certainly don't feel like typical anime.

And they will surely keep making your face smile and your heart warm until the very end.

The common denominator of „Hinamatsuri” and „Figure 17” is a „powerful lolis from outer space who need to acclimatize on Earth” anime trope. Both of these shows also contain a well known theme of superpowers whose use help and damage the lives of our main characters at the same time. Despite almost 17 years of age disparity between the two anime, they’re equally heart-warming, funny and entertaining in general.
