Recommendation Club Newsletter~Holiday Edition

As we enter into one of the busiest times of the year, we here at the Recommendation Club would like to extend our wishes for each and every one of you to have a wonderful holiday season!

Since the September newsletter, our club has gained many new members, and seen the return of old ones. We would like to keep the momentum going, and with our member list now at 3,111, that should be no problem at all! ^_^.

We would like all of our members, old and new, to help keep this an active, and fun club, a place to Chat and to seek out recommendations in our General anime and General Manga thread as well as the specific anime genre threads, such as Drama and Romance and Sci-fi and many others as well.

It’s a great place to make new friends, or renew past friendships, and we urge all of our members to drop by, and post in the various threads and comment section, as well as share you expertise with other members.

We look forward to seeing you all here !

News and Request for Help

Our club is almost one year old and we'll be most likely celebrating it with lots of specials and contests, so you might wanna check out the club at least once every few days as something new might appear in the horizon. :D

We noticed that while the member count keeps growing by day, we aren't exactly as active as we should be. It would be nice to see more and more people chatting in the comments or in the chat thread. I'd like to mention that a chat thread in our club gets closed after a comment or so is made on page 50. I'd like to get this one closed so we can start one anew in our next club year. Thanks in advance.

I'd also be glad if you introduced yourself in our special threads or warmly welcome our new members that have posted there. Also, if you have any trouble deciding what anime you want to watch or if you want to help others, take a look at the recommendation thread and post there.

If anyone is willing to make member cards, just post the templates in this thread or pm them to me. If you have made some other kind of graphic for the club you can post it in the comments or, again, pm it to me.

Ah how dare you enjoyed Spice & Wolf without watching the 2nd season. I take it you wait for the dub then. :)

Added some of your favs to my PTW and would say you could like Katanagatari. It's a mix of Spice & Wolf and Champloo with great dialogs and some nice shounen parody.

Hello there,
I am responding to your comment on my list ;-)

You are right about my currently watching list. I do seem to watch a lot of light romances (besides Paradise Kiss) and comedies right now. That’s because life is stressful at the moment and I can’t swallow too many deep shows…need something light to entertain me.

Ghost Hunt wasn’t a bad anime. There was one or two arcs which I honestly loved…but then there were too many arcs which I didn’t like and also I couldn’t really care for the main characters. If you like horror animes I recommend Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror and Mononoke, which are more like traditional ghost stories.
Fate Stay Night and Chrono Crusade basically had the same problem for me. Characters I couldn’t find interesting. But I do have to say that Chrono Crusade had an awesome ending that caught me off guard.

And about me dropping shows or putting them on hold after many episodes…well…if I start losing interest in a show then I don’t care for the ending anymore. Then there are those shows which gradually got worse from episode to episode (Seto no Hanayome and Kaiji) so I feel like there is no need to keep on…

I took your advice and I enabled the episode status. I was in fact debating with myself on Code Geass. I bumped it up to an 8 last night.

I understand. That's how I feel about Bleach. That's why I stopped it at the 'Bounts' arc and just gave it an 8. I doubt I would've scored it that high if I had kept watching. I still don't really understand about the movies, though. But I'm going to guess it's similar to how Haruhi S2 made me rethink the score I gave to Season 1.

Cute profile pic, btw. Penguins are so adorable. xD

Depends on the videogame....but recently most games get shorter and shorter. :(
I'm aware that many shows don't have similar offers like Death Note, but if you are willing to search for it I'm pretty sure that you can get most stuff relatively cheaply.
Agreed about Elfen Lied, I've noticed the same thing with a lot of shorter series. I'd still trade those prices with the pirces over here every day. :/

Well, to take a short series, the ordinary price of the Air BD boxset is 23.000 yen which is about 170? pounds. Now this is BD...but still. For Kanon 2006 it's a staggering 63000 yen. That's like more than my monthly rent, broadband, electricity and gas bill for 24 episodes.

Other than that, there are very few series with actualy with official boxsets. Most boxsets are just BD rereleases of older series which were originally released on DVD.
Newer series which get released on BD from volume one don't usually get boxsets.
Sometimes you can find "unofficial" boxsets in some stores (usually second hand) where they just sell all volumes of a series to a slightly cheaper price than if you were to buy the volumes one by one.

It is difficult to say that you will never ever watch an anime again (unless it was completely horrendous), though the possibility with me is extremely high - I have so many anime I want to watch, and so little time, that I will probably never get back to them unless I really wanted to. There are always better things to watch. And new shows are continuously coming out.

I see you've finished the FMA manga. What did you think of its conclusion?
novalis Jun 13, 2010 1:21 AM
I do that as well - though sometimes, I am in the mood for something stupid and "funny" (sadly most harem/ecchi are not) and I'll enjoy a series like that. Like you, i has to have a 'hook', like certain characters or story qualities. Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun, one of my latest anime, had great side characters, and they were the reason I watched the anime. And surprisingly, I rather enjoyed Ladies versus Butlers, which had excessive fanservice (which I don't usually like), but again because of the characters, I ended up enjoying the series.

Well, just because an anime is on my dropped list, does not mean it has zero chance of ever picked up again - except Mahou Sensei Negima, Da Capo and Gundam Seed. And I might even pick up Da Capo again for completion's sake and just grit my teeth while I watch it. Otherwise, I still have copies of most of the rest on disc, so they may have a chance at life again someday.

Yeah - my PTW is just a list of available anime, because like you, my preferences are always changing. It works best for me, and I like to have a comprehensive list of everything I have so that my local anime crowd has something to consult when they want to trade.

Ooh! I see Higurashi on your plan to watch list! I hope you enjoy it. It's the most outstanding psychological anime I've ever seen, and a personal favorite.

Anyways, about what you said in the forum:
* Cat Soup is a truly unique anime. I really enjoyed it, but it's so unlike anything I've ever seen before that I have no idea what to rate it.
* FMP was a decent anime, but it really couldn't hold my interest. So I give it a base score of 7 and then subtracted a bit since it bored me.
* The dropped movie is a mistake, that's supposed to be on hold. xD I saw half the movie streamed, then ran into dead links.
* I mostly drop anime these days more because they bore me than anything else. Most of of the exceptions are anime like DBZ, which are long runners that I saw on tv a long time ago. (I wouldn't rewatch all of DBZ for a handful of missed episodes) The one 9 is something I saw with a friend. ^^;
It’s time to ditch the text file.
