I've seen Battle Angel Alita around for some time, but because I always thought it seemed like some cheesy old shounen series, I never bothered trying it.
However, during a period of boredom I suddenly came across it and decided to give it a try. And I was very surprised.

The story starts out like a typical shounen series, with an amnesiac cyborg girl being found in a scrapyard. She is then repaired by the guy who finds her, who becomes a kind of father for her. continuing on, she meets lots of people, friends and foes, while pursuing bounties in a dark, steampunk styled post apocalyptic read more

What a great original story this was. The art is very detailed and clear in the sense that you can actually understand whats going on in the fight scenes. For some fighting manga's it was very difficult to imagine what went on during a fight scene but Alita didnt lose me. I got a sense of excitment following Alita's develpment from innocent cyborg to bounty hunter to elite sportwomen to warrior as there was not a single boring moment. It was a thrill to see what new weapons or body she would get and how she would defeat or catch her enemies.

Not only was the read more

Whilst these two have completely different settings, they have many common themes between them. Both Berserk and Alita follow unfortunate protagonists whose troubles seem to go from bad to worse-- pretty much all the time. Guts and Gally/Alita (depending on where you read it) suffer terrible hardship, and through this we see them change dramatically. Both stories are so emotional and amazingly written... but I think it's important to note that they're both really gorey!
Both have a lot of action, a lot of gore. Both have the main character risking their lives in death or life competions and fighting the bad guys . In both mangas the story is unraveling little by little and you just can't stop reading.
