I actually really enjoyed the episode, though I kind of felt that it deviated just a little bit from the normal dynamics of the show. Every other episode so far shows how humans are inherently flawed. This episode actually had a happy ending though, where people were able to cooperate together to get a decent outcome. ^_^

Happy endings, yay. The series needed it, to be honest. ^^; It was getting a tad depressing.

I agree that it was good with a happy ending :-).

However I do think that it shows human flaws: The fact that we tend to get stuck in old ways of thinking and doing things and consider things we do not understand as "magical".

Great episode!

Well...if you view closed mindedness toward technological progression a flaw.
But I agree, it had a more light hearted and happy feel. A nice change.

Waaah, I nearly cried when she said 'Everything was right. The calculations, experiments and my life...they weren't wasted!' D: Cute episode.

A happy ending ?
I thought Kino's Journey was a pessimistic series, I didn't expect the plane could fly o_O

But indeed it was a good episode, less violent than the others but more relaxed.

I'm glad Kino came to this country and happy that Ninya did not waste all those years of her life, family fortune and end up in bitter disappointment for the rest of her life. It was good to have a happy ending for once.

pretty symbolic eh...
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

I wasn't sure what the "moral" of the episode was going to be, so I considered both the possibility that she wouldn't be able to fly, and that she would. The ending was great though, very nice. Another fabulous episode. It was indeed ironic that the statue of the bird was what initially prevented her from flying.

Nice change in the mood. A light-hearted episode with happy ending comes out well.

I felt very relieved when Nimya could fly, she didn’t waste all those years of her life and family fortune for nothing. Accomplishing something you’ve work really hard in so much time is really meaningful, even if nobody believed in you.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

No one understood the message? I think it's something like this.
Unforeseeable results may happen from a simple whim. Or something along the lines of chance. (Too bad I don't have a way with words and couldn't make that sound awesome.)
I wasn't sure at first but this quote made me certain.
"It might be just a coincidence or a whim that the traveler came to this country....."
This sort of this was actually mention twice. The other time was earlier in the episode.
"Yes, it was sort of a coincidence that we came to this country.
We let a stick fall and it happened to point this way."
So the episode really was thought provoking.

Also the fiance was (insert rude word here). "I just want you to be an ordinary wife." DB!

For a change, an episode that showed that us, humans, flawed creatures, have the capacity to take a stand, to make a difference and to revolutionize. And most important of all, that there's people who can help you achieve a dream. This episode gives me faith in humanity me.

It's amusing how everyone kept mocking her when her ideas failed. Now they looked like they practically wanted to worship her.

I thought one of the high-tech places they briefly visited (or talked about once in a flashback, I think) had flying cars?

Anyway, great episode. I think this show has ended happily more than people are giving it credit for, though.

Because the greatest thing about technology isn't the how advanced and futuristic the tech appears or actual is. What's important is the ingenuity, innovation, and dedication behind the invention. Sure, many of the countrys
they've visited had advanced technology, but as we seen, they always look so lifeless, and only accomplish menial tasks that humans already have the ability to do. Without a true...purpose? behind thier creation, they become nothing more than moving piles of metal

This is also my theory as to why Hermes can talk, because he was created with the intention to explore and learn and all that good stuff human can't do on thier own. Consequently, he is alot more lively.

Finally, while the message is alot more positive then past eps, It still feels rather pessimistic considering the above theory. The fact that ALL the citizens considered the plane (which embodies innovation and all that good stuff) "magic," sort of implies that the values that the plane embodies are so non-existent within them, that they are unable to recognize it as anything other than magic. Even kino admitted to doing the same thing. The ep basicly said, Hey, the world has all this great potential, all these possibilities, but almost the entirety of the human race doesn't have the qualities to make it happen.

Coming off the heels of the two episode mini arc, it's rather sad that this episode seems rather appreciated, being that it's an instance of, once again, Kino directly influencing the countries she visits. In addition, it's a spiritual sequel of sorts to Episode 4, what with birds the image of flying birds and whatnot, where the travelers in both stories encouraging and ultimately driving those girls to reach for beyond parochial interests, beyond a life of utilitarian confinement. What does it mean to be human if not to live, rather than exist?. Both stories even involved fixing up machines, a motorad and a biplane respectively, their take offs acting as both literal and figurative vehicles of freedom. It's magical. Beautiful.

In addition. It's easy for people to conflate benign magic with bad witchcraft, transgression rather than transcendence. Yet, unless conditioning's an issue, people prefer the familiar, because it's certain. If not altogether comfortable in reality, it's comfortable in illusion. But without that initiative among people to attempt to fly beyond these boundaries, humanity wouldn't have come as far as it did.

Everyone discouraged her, but she realized her potential in spite of that. And of course when she succeeds they start to look up to her. That's how it goes.
While the old man wasted all his potential on trying to be something else.

Damn, I absolutely loved this episode, maybe not as deep as many of the others but it sure was entertaining.

Didnt like how the fiance asked her to be an "ordinary" wife, he does seem like a good guy though.
When the girl fell over Kino, Hermes saying: "Now it's becoming interesting" - loved that.
And just the fact that it did fly and the villagers immediately removed the statue to make a landing strip ... so lovely.

This episode isn't half as clever or thought-provoking as the others, and the whole "individual tries to do something amazing, society doesn't take them seriously, individual succeeds, society suddenly respects individual, the end" formula is a tired cliche.

And yet...

Somehow I really loved this episode. In fact, I'd watch an entire movie or series about this woman's life. Nimya's ambition and relentlessness, the friendship between her and Kino, the visuals when the plane is flying, the soundtrack... So many things I loved in this episode.

I suppose it is nice to have a break from all the dark stuff.
