Yeah that what I thought too...I guess nobody's going crazy in this timeline but who knows, we'll see.

I think it's Rika that will go crazy in this timeline because of things being so different than what she has been used to since like forever. she's already starting to get paranoid, she is gonna lose it and go all psycho imo...

Basically, everyone did everything right from the start so there was "nothing" to beat. But now that she's thrown into a world in which she's lost. She knows nothing of what will come and she has no true friends anymore. She even lost her best friend.

So yeah, I think I agree with people here in something. Rika is likely going through the same process Keiichi went in the very first arc. So likely, the flash of Rena going psycho was likely all in Rika's head, the same way Keiichi pictured Rena and Mion as crazy.

I'll start with my first intriguing, yet "dumb" question: Why hasn't Rika tried to communicate with Hanyu? Or rather, why hasn't Hanyu shown her self yet in this "different" world?
By the way, whose that woman who's beside Rika (in the previw for the 3rd OVA and in the ED)? Frederica Bernkastel or her mother?

I remember hearing something about her being in a comma or something in Rei, so I presume that all of "this" is happening in her head (meaning that she didn't die when she got got hit by that truck), while she's in this "world" (comma).
I don't think that that's the case though...
Anyway, the Mystery's starting to get me more into it! :D

I think I must be one of the few who didn't laugh at Rika getting slammed by a truck after the, "Yay, life!" line. x_x That just *sucked* so bad I wanted to face plant into my keyboard.

Great episode. I think I'm in the camp of those who think Rika hallucinated Re/Reina's psycho glitch. :)

One thing that confused me (I'm probably mixing up plot points/not remembering correctly) - if there is no Hinamizawa syndrome, wouldn't...

Not really a spoiler, since I'm assuming everyone who's watching this has seen the past arcs, but just in case..

I have no idea where this is going. Rika is stuck in a new world where everything is fine...well almost. I need to know why Reina made that horrible face when Rika asked about the mutilated corpse, but we all have to wait for the next episode, impatiently. D:

She didn't, Rika's just paranoid. Look at Higurashi's very first arc for a similar case. (Keiichi pictures Rena and Mion with those same exact expressions)

And for Kurichan: if you listen to Rena's whole conversation, she talks about how Satoko and her foster dad (remember her mother remarries into the Houjo household) are getting along better and working their differences. So yes, Satoko's parents are alive, and that goes for Rika's parents as well (since it was Takano who killed Rika's parents).

I guess it's similar to the first arc, but even with that in mind you can't prove that she is going crazy. It would be a great twist though! The fact that not only did she see Reina's face change but also assumed the doctor was Irie is another big hint.

Pretty much. I think this time it might just be pure psychological stress rather than the oft. mentioned Hinamizawa Syndrome.

New world ? '

Keiichi is not in Hinamizawa, Rena's parents did not divorce, the dam project was resolved smoothly, and neither Satoko nor Rika's parents died. However the club never formed, meaning Rika has no friends, Hanyū is absent, Rika isn't revered as the reincarnation of Oyashiro and the village will soon sink underwater. What is going to happen ? What is the reason she returned to June 1983 in this condition ?

This is become very interesting !

I was sad when that truck came in, really. All those months watching the 1st and 2nd seasons, getting to know the story, and now some random truck kills her owo.

Comments made while watching:

-"Ill grind your eyelids off with a file." Considering some of the ways people have died in this series...that almost isnt funny.

-Girls stop sexually harassing Keiichi.

-Ok so this IS a sequel to season 2 then, ignore the related comments I made in my episode 1 post.

-Oh no Rika is trying to kill people again.

-Seems I may have been wrong as well about this being a comedy anime based on watching the first episode...as I said in the last two seasons..."Shit has hit the fan."

-Rika's got to get used to dying having consequences.

-Wait she didnt get hit by a truck did she...oh shit....

-So she has to relive that hell again...ok Satoko for the love of God...stay away from your dad.

-Yeah being hit by a baseball is the least of her worries now.

-No im not going to the clinic...the creepy lady is there!

-"Getting a head injury is quite scary." Lady you have NO idea.

-Oh yeah I forgot...each time she goes back something is different.

-"I heard he was a great doctor." Probably because he didnt try to murder his patients.

-No I dont EVER want a nurse like that to work here.

-So...maybe Rika got lucky and ended up in a time when nobody is trying to kill her...somehow im not quite ready to embrace that idea...

-Screw Keiichi...Shion isnt here either...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

-They could easily turn this episode into an infomercial about why its a good idea to follow basic bicycle safety rules...I mean this all could have been prevented if she listened to the kami and slowed down.

-"Rena I leave you to escort Rika-chan home." Yeah and please try not to kill her on the way.

-So you mean to tell me that all the problems of the first two seasons could have been prevented if they just build the damn dam?!?

-Oh yeah I remember Oyashiro-sama...yay!

-OK...apparently Rena has a problem with the words "mutilated corpse incident."

-"What am I supposed to do in this world. Somebody tell me." Um...how about not die.

Post Episode Comments:

So it seems like my first impression based on episode 1 about this being a comedy spin off of the first two seasons with no relationship to the original plot was way off. Instead it seems like everything is all nice and fine in this new world...yeah like im gonna buy that. Money says Rena knows something (its obvious). Look forward to episode 3.

I think Rika diead in that accident and the new world lacks only one thing... the Hinamizawa-syndrome...
After all, the dam building lasted due to agression, Satoko's family was torn apart from that, Takano's father was researching it, Reina's family problems were of that as well...

If you think about it, it is almost 100% sure that that's the only part, which they took out...

Meaning the only person left alone will be Rika

Oh snap, no Takano, no Irie, no Keiichi, no Dam war, no Oyashiro-sama's curse, no Hinamizawa syndrome, Satoko and Rika are not friends, Satoshi is still around, Reina never changed her name, Tokyo never conducted research, its a year after everything that was supposed to happen happened (but it never happened!!!)

Yet the mutilated corpse incident raises a stir with Reina when mentioned...

Also it looks like Rika's parents are still around too. I thought I noticed that in the preview. This should be an interesting series, to be continued over summer break!

That's because in this world, satoshi didn't go crazy from the Hinamizawa-syndrome, thus he wasn't taken away by Takano (who in the first place wasn't there to take him away)...

About that covers it, I think...

Interesting episode with a really strange world. Keiichi, Takano, Okonogi and Irie are not there, Satoshi is there, Satoko and Rika are not friends, the dam is built, Rena is Reina... wtf. Finally when Rika found her peace in Matsuribayashi-hen, she is confronted with that. Re(i)na's Hinamizawa snydrome moment at the end was scaa~ry, it had much more impact on me than in the other episodes of Higurashi. I find it also kind of disturbing that Hanyuu did not appear. Perhaps because the people even believe less in Oyashiro-sama since the chain of murders did not happen and it weakend her even more?

Man, a Hinamizawa without Irie, Takano and Keiichi? What a boring place! Also, an incredibly submissive Hinamizawa.

So when Rena turned around all murderous, was that an illusion or real? oooh, interesting.

Well this episode was weird... :/
I was expecting more fan service, but this is better. Poor Rika she is really having rough time... Well I hope it gets cleared out in next episode, I don't want to see her be more in paranoia. This world where nothing happens could be shocking for any of us if we know just one dangerous life we had, but Rika experienced it thousands of times, so I kinda feel her pain too... TT.TT
As for Reina, man she freaked me out...

I feel so bad for Rika. She finally was happy in Matsuribayashi-hen, but now she's in a new world, and has to figure everything out. But im not sure if that's where this third season left off, cause in the first episode, they were hanging out with Takano, which is strange.. or was that episode just a filler?

TadloS said:
Rika died really stupidly, traffic accident...

I agree. It just seemed kind of lame how that happened, but i guess they couldn't make up any other decent way for her to die and appear in a new world ^_^
She should have been more careful. Just because the battle thingy was over, and she could be happy, doesn't mean she shouldn't still be aware of her surroundings.
