The mystery that she requested Oreki to solve... doesn't seem all that important. Makes the story feel like am exaggeration...

But I still love the art and Oreki. I like the mystery with the Newspaper sempai. I knew he was hiding something. For some reason though, I assumed drugs, but it was tobacco. I wonder why the guy was so panicked though. He looked like he was on the verge of going crazy and attacking Oreki. o_o (Loved his hair~)

I hope the mystery turns out to be significant.

Still not exactly sure about the whole premise of the show. Why is what her uncle said years ago so damn important, and how could she have just "forgotten" it?

I can't tell if this show is trying to be more a mystery or slice of life... or how serious this secret from the past is. I understand that things will unravel as the show progresses and I do like shows where the beginning episodes are confusing, but I just don't know what to make of this anime.

And hopefully the mysteries will get a little less obvious :P.

Cause what her uncle said years ago is very important and somehow really bother Chitanda? She forgot because it was something very shocking. It can happen in the real life you know. When shocked, people consciously or unconsciously tends to make their brain forget what they want to forget

The tabacco thing was kinda predictable, good episode though, development about Chitanda's "personal" reasons.
And Houtaro is as lazy as always :P

I was hoping that third year was a stoner or having sex with some girl in the back of the classroom, kinda disappointing the whole mystery got played up around cigarettes.

Nothing really happened though, the whole episode felt dragged out in my opinion but I like how it's getting a little darker and there seemed to be a little more character development for the MC.

If it keeps progressing the way it did in this episode it should prove to be a very interesting series if not the high school melodrama will ultimately turn out to be a bore.

A bit better. At least we have a long term mystery to solve now.
Houtaro's ability to solve and manipulate people was good, but still his character still grates me.
The whole "saving energy" thing really is a terrible reason for his lack of overt emotion. He's not even sarcastic like Tomoya. As a result, character interactions suffer and are kind of a chore to watch through, especially since we're missing Satoshi.

The mystery this time around also had an extremely predictable and boring conclusion, but at least it was fun watching Houtaro make his sempai squirm.

The classical music feels oddly out of place. The show's own original soundtrack is far better. The classical music chosen lulls you into relaxation, something I really shouldn't be doing in a good mystery.

After three episodes, it seems that mysteries are just simple questions to everyday occurrences and are certainly not the highlight of this anime.
Will keep watching for Chitanda and beautiful animation/art.

So far this series isn't really grabbing me with it's plot. I couldn't figure out what the mystery was supposed to be, but now that I know a little more it isn't that interesting. I'll still watch it regardless, just to see where it goes.

Oh joy, we finally get some semblance of the main plot... only to find the mystery be Chitanda wanting to remember what her uncle said to her? ಠ_ಠ Couldn't it have been, I dunno... something a bit more substantial than a couple of words said in the past? Lol at the first volume of the book being so coincidentally gone.

That was so Loling awesome!
The Art of Shipping is no mere game. It can be small skirmishes to huge nation size wars.
Of course some will claim their ship is the BATTLESHIP but they all do. This is why battles occur because of factions fighting each other to justify their favourite ship.
And thus SHIP to SHIP combat occurs almost anytime even now.
Beware, Threading into the Shipping battlefield will be bloody.... What are you waiting for?

For those wondering why it was 'just smoking' - of course that's a bad thing for him. His family is famous for secondary education. If he was caught, underage, smoking, in school, in japan - of course it would become a large scandal and effect his family. This explains his reasons for panicking.

Anyway - liked this episode, I have a feeling there's more to Eru's story than meets the eyes, but I'll do a full post tomorrow.

lol i love eru's red nose, couldnt stop laughing at her
also love the character and plot development in the beginning

damn, houtaro is a devilshly sly genius.
i already had a hunch the senpai was doing drugs or something, but the way houtaro analyzed and figured it out and implicitly blackmailed him was pure genius.

and of course, getting closer to solving one of their mysteries leads to an even bigger one :S
the first issue missing, very big key to their mystery. cant wait for next week!

also LOL at satoshi's outfit

Better than the previous episode, I was actually focused from beginning to end. Satoshi's random appearance near the end actually made me laugh out loud.

Also Chitanda's petty mystery doesn't seem all important, well for her yeah but I could care less.

BRSxIgnition already answered that. And in addition to that I'll quote this from Animesuki:

Sylphic said:
For a son like him from an upstanding family of educators to be a delinquent and engaging in such behavior goes beyond affecting him. It would be a mark on the careers of everyone in the family and a severe blow to their credibility. Not to mention a severe blow to the reputation of the school and especially the teachers who work there.

How good of an educator are you, if you can't even educate your own children or your own young family members? The societal consequences would be huge.

These ramifications don't exist in western culture. Smoking under age is not detention or suspension in high school, it is grounds for EXPULSION especially because Kaneyama is a private school. Remember, mandatory education is only until the age of 15 or grade 9. The school has no obligation to actually keep the student.

Togaito has so much to lose if he's caught, it's not even funny. It's actually a little incredulous that he would try to pull that off in school.

Agreed. Honestly, who puts up sensors because of smoking?
The whole episode felt kind of awkward. I'm really getting tired of characters talking about nothing for 10 minutes while we are shown all the different angles, including under the table and from the floor next to the table. Most of these don't work anyways. It happened last week in Accel World and now in Hyouka. The reason Fate/Zero conversations aren't a bore is because they at least talk about something, but half of this talk was basically Eru clenching her fists and blushing.

I'm getting slightly bored of this. The mysteries aren't very well constructed either. I mean, Houtarou just assumes about 50% of his 'discoveries'. Like honestly, what were the clues leading who KNOW absolutely for sure, that the medical box was in the paper box table, along with the guy's smokes.
I did appreciate the sunflower moment though.

Who's dumb enough to smoke in school when you're in that situation? It was still very unrealistic, nobody would go through that much trouble to have a smoke.

The same dumbasses that try to beat up teachers, sell drugs on school grounds, try to have quickie in a toilet with his b/gf's, try to steal money from "Class saving" box, try to break into another room, try to peek at girl's changing room, try to steal exam paper, try to steal a fucking monitor from school, smash car windows etc etc.

If you never seen any of those at your school... I'll be surprise. (Kid happen to be from well off parents)

Also...
It is a not too uncommon for a kid from well off parents caught doing fishy stuff in Japan, and usually, the media do a lot of work on it. (You'll know if you grow up in Asia). Dude, if your kids a bad bully, expect the whole neighborhood to hate your family when they found out, it is just that extreme over at anime land.

Heck, if you drink and drive then injure someone, expect people to paint your house with "murderers" "Monster" "Dog" all over your wall and maybe even smash your windows and such (And no, I am not exaggerating this)

Let's start getting some other facts I came across:

First of 13th of October was a Sunday so the letter was written on a Holy Day. Wonder if it means something. Source:
http://www.dayoftheweek.org/?m=October&d=13&y=1968&go=Go

1968 + 45 years ago = 2013 so that correlates with time frames.

Here are some assumptions:

-A meeting with a supernatural creature created a fear and paranoia beyond anything. Eru freaked out at it.

-The cover of the anthologies always looks to feature supernatural monster or supernatural smaller creatures.

-The way Eru acts around wanting to now the truth gets me to think "Curiosity kills the cat and that cat is Eru" in other words Eru knowing the truth might not make it out mentally. In thinking and assuming that I am not sure she might want to find out.

-If the the truth is a supernatural monster of immense proportions and be being in contact you are cursed to live off from seeing it then I would not be surprised Eru is cursed in fear. Just it's not complete the curse.

-Why did the family lose contact with the family of the uncle? Could it be bad relations? Fear? Or plain simply the curse was known and they cut ties to not be cursed.

These are all interesting thoughts and assumptions that came up to me. This is also another good reason to take the time to take a 2nd looks at Hyouka and each of its episodes.
