this was a good ending. Endou pretty much played kaiji but Kaiji did accomplish what he wanted.

This season was great just didn't cover as much as the 1st

Wait a second...

1). 600 yen is around 6$. He blew that on pachinko? Big deal.
2). The guy in the suit gave him 30 yen. That's 30 cents. "Hey buddy, here's 30 cents, don't hold back on your celebration!"
3). Akagi is now a hotel owner?
4). Didn't Kaiji get at least a little suspicious that Endou had a pre-made contract for Kaiji buying him 3 beers in case he goes underground? Sakazaki didn't say a word?
5). Why are you saying that Endou is scum? If he was scum, he would've made the contract say that Kaiji should give him all the winnings and owe him a 100 million on top.

Also, as far as I know the character of Kaiji was based on Stu Ungar. Look him up. Basically, he is a genius in a life-or-death situation, but outside of the battlefield? He loses his wits, loses his compass and slips down into the abyss of hell - all the while ruining himself by being too nice of a guy for his own good.

It was 600000 yen which is 6000 dollars. The guy gave him 30000 which is 300 dollars and it is enough to buy food for everyone.

Am I the only one here who didn't like the 2nd season? It's not shitty by any means but it sucks compared to the 1st season. I mean there were like two games, that dice thingy and pachinko, and neither of them were really entertaining (especially if compared to the life threatening games in S1). Also Kaiji makes such a big deal about repaying his friends and then just wastes the money on pachinko? Hasn't he learned anything from his mistakes? No character development at all it seems. On top of that there's a sucky side cast with that old man crying even more than Kaiji and Ichijou, who's personality is completely shallow and childish ("I was treated bad in the past so I must rise to power and hurt everyone" HURR DURR). Also, who didn't see some kinda backlash coming the very MOMENT Kaiji (against better knowing) signed yet another shady contract from Endouh? It was so called for that he'd end up with nearly no money again... Maybe I'm a bit to harsh here, but I am really disappointed and can't rate this higher than 5/10. It has "mediocre" written all over it and it wasn't keeping me on the edge of my seat, as I was used to from S1.

You're gonna hate season 3 then....

The entire season is one loooooong Mahjong match.

And how are the games not exciting? The only exciting game in season 1 was the Paper-Scissor rock thing. That's it. Everything after that was just idiotic. The crossing bridges thing was way out there/unrealistic. The sadistic card game was ok, and then the tissue box nonsense.

Season 2, you had the awesome bog gambling to start things off, and then you move on to real gambling, trying cheat a machine that can't be beaten. It's more realistic than the first season in my opinion

this was Ok , but season 1 was godlike for me...

6/10.

Me 2, the chinchiro part was cool 10/10 but the bog was too long.

Restricted Janken > The Bog > Chinchirorin > E-Card >>> Human Derby >>> AMAZING box

That's how I would rate the arcs so far. I understand why people who didn't marathon this like I did would think it was too slow, but for me this season was just as good as the first one. Sure, the first one did have the most awesome gamble (restricted janken), but also the worst ones (human derby and amazing box). The human derby was kinda creepy I guess, but there were no tactics or mind games or strategies or anything like that involved (except for the stairs in the end maybe). Maybe the bog was slow, but at least the concept was awesome.

Good conclusion to the series. The first season is still better in my opinion, as it really focused on not only the psychology of desperation, but also how cruel and inhumane we can be to our fellow man, whereas this one seemed to play more to the "Kaiji outsmarts his opponent" angle with a few flashes of S1 brilliance thrown in.

Marathoned this series last night... It was very epic, but a part of me wishes I had never read the manga before hand... I think it cost me a unique experience. The manga was very amazing, and when I originally read through it, it was by far my favorite story of all time. Watching the anime, I realized the suspense of the bog just wasn't the same after knowing what's going to happen.

So I'm really mixed here. It's hard to say amazing things when the enjoyment factor was lower than it could have been. It was the same as the manga, and I rated that very highly and knew it as my favorite story of all time, but since the series doesn't really have rewatch/reread value, I enjoyed the anime less. Anime is my favorite form of media. The music, sound effects, and animation usually make it much more powerful than manga, in my opinion. So I think I've effectively ruined what could have been one of my favorite animes of all time, just by having read the manga.

Very sad here. Very sad.

Oh, I liked that above guys idea of rating the arcs. Here's mine:
Bog > Chinchirorin > E-Card > Human Derby > Restricted Rock Paper Scissors > This box is awesome

For the record, all of them ridiculously epic.

I just freaking loved this ending. And it actually has some pretty good character development for Kaiji.
We got to see what kind of a man he really is. Never backing down from his word, even if all the odds are stacked against him. Because he gets screwed over on a daily basis he knows better than anyone to never ever break the promises he makes.
It really shows character.

But then there is also the sad pathetic human part of him. Kaiji is, and always will be a loser. That's what makes him so human. He gets 1 break and immediately thinks thing will turn out in his favor. This fault is also a very human trait. He's not the ultimate gamber, but the ultimate surviver.

A great man, but a very sad and hopeless fool as well. And that's what makes him so interesting.

The only thing I can think of to say is:

Most satisfying fucking ending ever.

So happy I decided not to read the manga until after the anime ended. If I hadn't seen it animated first then I might not have loved S2 as much as I did.

1.Human Derby (This was the best arc ever. This was the arc with the most thrill in Kaiji.)
2.Restricted Rock Paper Scissors (This was ingenious)
3.The Box (Hyoudo)
4.The Bog
5.E-Card

Such an intense anime, but a GREAT FINALE to an amazing series.

Kaiji might be naive and an easy mark, but he shows yet again that he values human lives and friendship ahead of money.

In the end, Kaiji doesn't change......because he doesn't have to change, that's what makes him great!

I loved this season for all the twist and turns it had, it made every episode exciting and Kaiji is easily one of the greatest Male protagonist I have ever seen.

9/10.....Truly a GREAT anime/series!

The Bog arc was worth it after all.
It was a pretty nice ending, I preferred the 1st season though. Which is funny because, when I first finished S1, I rated it an 8 because of the ending, hoping that S2 would be even more awesome. Turns out that S1 was better, so I raised its rating to a 9.

I rate this season an 8. To be honest, I'm kind of skeptical on what might happen from now on, I think that the manga is on its 4th series already. This could become stale and repetitive, hell, this season already pushed it a bit. The novelty will wear off and it won't be suspenseful anymore since you know that Kaiji will pull it off eventually. I hope I'm proven wrong though.

I'll read the manga someday, first I need to re-watch the 1st season.

I kinda liked the second season more because, with people Kaiji has more control over the course of a game, but with this goddamn bog he is stuck with only a few tricks and the only thing he can do is wait for something to happen in the end.

In season 1 he sacrificed his ear and fingers. In season 2 he sacrificed his psyche xD.

I'd have to go with:

1. Gentei Janken - Most in-depth game of the entire series. Deceptively simplistic at first, this arc had it all. The fall, betrayal, plan, and ascension from hell. Best arc of the series, IMO.

2. Human Derby - Tonegawa's insight into the human psyche is spot on. Lots of great metaphors and use of imagery in this arc.

3. E-Card - Loved the King/Slave dialogue in this one and how Kaiji turns it back on Tonegawa. The wagering mechanism was insidious. Kaiji's final plan to win by using Tonegawa's own reasoning against him is my favorite gambit of the series.

4. Chinchiro - The custom dice just goes to show how resourceful Kaiji is capable of being. He's the MacGuyver of gambling.

5. Tissue Box Raffle - Yeah, this was a bad idea from the start. Somehow I knew this was going to backfire. That being said, they did manage to dramatize something so simplistic rather well.

6. The Bog - This arc starts to drag on and is unnecessarily long. This drew on even longer in the manga. The plan to beat it was interesting though.

My ranking:
1. Gentei Janken.
2. E Card.
3. The Bog (of course it was meant to be dragged out to create suspense, besides, it's a machine, you can't just use some tricks and then hit the jackpot soon after, it's not human, it takes time for everything to occur >.>)
4. Human Derby.
5. Chinchiro.
6. Tissue Box Raffle.

A good show, however what this season lacks in comparison to the first was the psychological speeches like from Tonegawa which really put emphasis on human thoughts and emotions. I felt that really made the series much more meaningful than the actual suspenseful events. Still, it was the best show I've seen recently.

Would have been better had they trimmed down some of the bog episodes. It was ingenious at first, but after all his cards were played all those coincidences seemed to have come out of left field. It wouldn't have been as bad if it wasn't for the fact that they dragged out that arc far longer then they should have. Couldn't help but be reminded of DBZ. The final showdown with the BOG started at what ep 16? we had 8 episodes(2.4 hours) of kaiji trying to take down the bog. Maybe if they had taken 6 episodes it wouldnt have felt as cliched. A lot of time it looked as if they were trying to fill time.

Tissue was a joke. Bridge would be my second worst just because it was so life-threatening and kind of depended more on physicality than strategy and manipulating opponents. All the others were good.

I can't believe the writer could make a pachinko arc with that much depth. The first level with the forest, the second with the jam, and the third levels with the blocked trays. That was just sheer brilliance. There was even some commentary about society again in here although it was pretty much overshadowed by the ball movements and the crying and yelling.

And once again Kaiji pretty much went out without winning anything. Well, that was kind of expected. Afterall, I think Kaiji's only flaw is that he just can't keep money in general. He may win outrageous sums, but he just have no control over saving them. It's like a common gambler's fallacy. Maybe he will change someday. Maybe he will topple Toiei someday.... and maybe I'll read the manga someday.

Give it a 9 just because there wasn't a disappointing ending like that tissue business in season 1. And I almost, almost wanted to see Kaiji meeting that guy's daughter, lol. And it look like "she" did just before Kaiji hugged the gang.

Kanji was too naive, most of the time. After all he went through, he still can't cherish a victory as a true winner should xD

Endou is such a clever guy, it seems so easy to trick the 'winning loser' at any occasion.

The second season gets a 8/10 from me as the pachinko arc was too long and too dramatic to my tastes. Nothing beats the E Card after all.
