| Well, lots of penguins and power rangers transformations. Decent cast. Quite a weird/comedic episode for a drama. I wonder what this show has to offer. |

| Rewatching this. I didn't like Mawaru Penguindrum the first time I saw it. I think I called it "convoluted." I'm more relaxed, attentive, and familiar with Ikuhara's style now; maybe I'll like it more this time. It's also helpful that I hardly remember the story, so it'll be like a fresh start. The first episode was amazing, and not a moment was boring. It introduced the theme (fate), the characters, the problem, and some questions. Why was Himari given a second chance? Who's communicating through that hat? I really enjoyed the OST and art style. 5/5 |
| That was so interesting and fun. Loving this so far! The latter half was a little confusing but still extremely enjoyable, what a good start. |

| Ooouuuu~ I haven't seen an anime transformation type of anime in awhile, haha. Takes me back to the good ol' Sailor Moon days ;D ;D I'm glad I'm not watching this series with my big bro lolol. It'd be awks xD I normally hate incest even in hentai, but occasionally, I can't help it if the characters are so cute x'D YiKES. Kan-chan is so hawt ;A; I guess he could steal a kiss. Shhhhhhh. |
| In the scene where Blue-hair meets the penguin, what I find really interesting is that the mother with her child, who cannot see the penguin, nonetheless seem unfazed by what we presume to be an umbrella floating in midair. It's like the movie with the sunglasses, except here the unseen truth leeks into their everyday reality in a way that would render it palpably absurd. |

| I've avoided all spoilers for this so I'm going in blind. I didn't know she was ill! Poor thing. Also... incest?! O-ok. One thing that struck me was the use of color. The room with the doctor was filled with blue, the garish red in the room with Himari's corpse... and then just the BRIGHT saturated colors of random objects in the world, but especially inside and outside their house. The penguins are so cuuute, one for each of them! I couldn't contain my laughter with the umbrella & the bug spray lmfao I guess the brothers take turns going to school so one of them is always looking after their sister? And we have some insight into their personalities so far- big bro is seemingly a player, and the younger one is uh. More expressive and vocal about looking after Himari. But the kiss contradicts what big bro really feels? Meanwhile Himari is nice but nothing else really stands out. |

| SEIZON SENRYAKUUUUUUU! Ok, overall, awsome 1st ep, Himari must be protected at all costs, and the interaction between the family members were also great. Atrough im not very frendly with Kunihiko Ikuhara's works (like there were certain things i did not liked in Utena...), i think this is an awsome, and sadly underrated anime, im rewathing it rn.. (Also, the episode previews... :D) |

| I'm loving this show from the 1 episode already, just like with Utena. Beautiful character designs, amazing and warm pastel (?) backgrounds, especially inside the house, "blank" background people, nicely done flashback scenes, the whole metro imagery, cute penguins, cute Himari, Utena references during the transformation sequence (which was gorgeous), god I love Ikuhara. I also noticed that the mech we saw during the transformation looked like a certain mech from Diebuster :D Ikuni worked on the 2nd episode of it after all. There's also a kappa somewhere in the episode. There was also one in Utena. Shouma's school friend reminded me of Wakaba A LOT. Little boys at the beginning talk about apples, the universe, Kampanella, afterlife and the power of life. I suspect that Kanba's love for Himari was caused by her taking his heart away during the tranformation (or at least it looked like that, metaphorically of course). Looks very much like sword-pulling from Utena, which is, too, is a metaphor. Notice how Kanba and Shouma hate the concept of fate, while Ringo admires it (she said it in the "epilogue" after the ED) Can a show get more awesome in just one episode? I'm excited to decypher the show's message and symbolism. P.S. I heard that Ikuhara was very influenced by Night on the galactic railroad and watched this movie right after the 1st episode of Penguindrum, the boys' talk about apples and Kampanella makes more sense now. Although I'm afraid that the connection to this movie might spoil me about the fate of the main characters, if Ikuhara directly referenced it. It's a speculation though, because the references might be vague. P.P.S. The metro stations mentioned in this episode are Ogikubo, Ikebukuro and Shinjuku-gyoemmae, and they're not just random. These stations are directly connected to the Tokyo subway sarin attack, particularly its part on the Marunouchi line. Notice that Ogikubo and Shinjuku are the starting and ending stations of the attack respectively. The abovementioned Marunouchi line has 24 stations, and Penguindrum has 24 episodes, with the progression being pictured as travelling between the stations. We see this imagery in the middle and in the end of the episode. There're also a lot of metro-related images in the opening, as well as a circle with the number "95", which references the date of the sarin attack - year 1995. Damn, I'm so excited about this show already! |

| One of the only shows in which I'm heavily influenced by the OP/ED: Nornir is such an amazing song. Even worried the rest of the show would not live up to and mess up the imagery and feel I currently have of the song(spoiler: it won't). Still, it's really that great a tune |

| This episode was anime in a nutshell. It was so anime I can now speak japanese fluently. More seriously, pure insanity, beautiful art, great animation, and an interesting story ? I'm in ! I just hope the characters will be developed correctly because they don't seem very remarkable so far, though I love Himari's design. Also, I hope they have a good reason to introduce incest. |
