http://www.demos.co.uk/press-release/staggering-scale-of-social-media-misogyny-mapped-in-new-demos-study/

"As much as 50% of the sexist harassment women face on Twitter comes from other women, according to findings released on Thursday.

In an international study of tweets posted over a three-week period, British think tank Demos searched for the use of terms like "slut" and "whore" to find specific instances of gender-based abuse online, and discovered women were just as bad as men when it came to spewing misogynistic comments.

Over a three-week period, think tank Demos counted the number of uses of two particular words as indicators of misogyny.

It found evidence of large-scale misogyny, with 6,500 unique users targeted by 10,000 abusive tweets in the UK alone.

Twitter boss Jack Dorsey has said that tackling abuse is a priority.

The research comes as UK MPs - Yvette Cooper, Maria Miller, Stella Creasy, Jess Philips - alongside former Liberal Democrat minister Jo Swinson, launch their Reclaim the Internet campaign, in response to growing public concern about the impact of hate speech and abuse on social media.

The campaign has opened an online forum to discuss ways to make the internet less aggressive, sexist, racist and homophobic.

Launching the campaign, Ms Cooper told the BBC: "The truth is nobody knows what the best answers are. There is more when there is criminal abuse, for example rape threats, that the police should be doing but what is the responsibility of everyone else? What more should social media platforms be doing?"

She said that the campaign was an opportunity for the public to "put forward their proposals and demands for the changes we want to see".

In response to the survey, Twitter's head of trust and safety Kira O'Connor told the BBC: "Hateful conduct has no place on the Twitter platform and is a violation of our terms of service.

"In addition to our policies and user controls, such as block, mute and our new multiple tweet reporting functionality, we work with civil society leaders and academic experts to understand the challenge that exists."

The Demos study also looked at international tweets and found more than 200,000 aggressive tweets using the words, "slut" and "whore", were sent to 80,000 people over the same three weeks. "

That's the thing. This suggests that there's not much disparity in attitudes or feelings towards women between the sexes. It seems obvious and balanced, but many would suggest that it actually should be like 70-90% coming from men.

That being said, it means little. It shows women are just as apt to use derogatory statements against other women as men are, but we "should" already know that. It otherwise says absolutely nothing about gender inequality, one way or the other.

It's not "50% are women", it's "these tweets are 50% more likely to come from women".

Which is of course language used to be deliberately misleading and make you think men are a bigger problem than they really are. You know, for equality.

The actual divide is about 60% - 40%.

I find it interesting that words like "slut" and "whore" are indicators of misogyny.

"Wow you slut, you fucking cheated on me with 4 other guys" <- this person is a misogynist. Apparently.

Meanwhile, it's already established that men get harassed online more than women.

I thought it was already pretty accepted that most slut shaming comes from women, on account of the fact that "sluts" negatively impact "non-sluts", whereas men are only affected positively (those that don't want to deal with "sluts" simply don't and it is relatively neutral).

And thanks to the lax definition of "misogyny", it isn't even slightly shocking if women are just as often the perpetrator, since actual misogyny is actually somewhat atypical. However, good for them, they now have "proof" that the patriarchy is real . . . Why you ask? Cause look how many women have internalized misogyny. Way too many for it to be a coincidence.

Feminazis will never acknowledge the fact that women can be just as if not MORE vicious towards other women than men.

Seriously...it's women who are constantly making fun of other women based on their looks, fashion, clothing, and other superficial bullshit.

Nice try Keys....but facts and empirical evidence means nothing to feminists and their ilk.

The funny thing about Feminists is you never know when certain words are meant to be offensive.

Sex negative feminists like Anita Sarkeesian would definitely think "slut" is a demeaning and offensive word...

But then you have sex positive feminists that go on "slut walks" and try to show off their "slut pride".

Then even more confusing is when these "sluts" want to behave in any manner they feel like and want to be free from all consequences...but they have the nerve to tell society in general "don't tell me how to dress or behave, teach men not to rape".

What?!

And this boils down to what ALL feminism is really about.

Give me extra rights and privileges for no other reason than I'm a woman.

Honestly, if you find it difficult not to rape a woman because she goes around in a skimpy outfit or even buttnaked, that's your problem mate. Most men have enough blood to irrigate their dick and brain at the same time.

Wow.

OK, I'm not gonna get bent out of shape by your comment, I'm just going to calmly explain why when feminists say that statement, they are full of shit.

First and foremost, men are not idiots, we understand that rape is wrong, we don't need to be told not to rape or sexually assault a woman.

Secondly, if someone IS going to rape, they're going to do it regardless of anything that is told to them.

"Teaching men not to rape" is like teaching men not to murder....in other words it's pointless since criminals don't obey the law to begin with.

Lastly...SOME women genuinely believe they can act in whatever way they feel like and think society is going to respect them no matter what...that's not how it works.

Imagine I start insulting some random guy I don't know...and then I cry foul when he beats the shit outta me.

"But...violently assaulting an individual is wrong!"

^Yeah, but you provoked him and although assaulting someone is a crime, some people when pushed will push back.

So...now imagine a woman starts to tease a man at a club...starts to flirt with him...and gives other signals...but ultimately rejects the man's sexual advances...

I'm NOT saying she should be sexually assaulted for doing this...but she also can't think that her behavior won't have zero consequences either.

SOME people push back when they are pushed.

Generally, you shouldn't provoke strangers...don't insult some random guy and don't sexually tease a stranger if you don't have any plans to go further.

In other words, show appropriate behavior so others will do the same...

Where was the slut shaming?

You think it's wrong to tell people to control their behavior around strangers?

You think it's wrong to tell women that they shouldn't be provoking strangers?

Let me ask you something....do you lock your car when not using it?

Why?

People KNOW that stealing is wrong....why should I have to lock my car....teach people not to steal!

That's the logic we're dealing with feminists....and apparently the one you're defending.

@JustALEX

The solution to your problem is to cover your wiminz with hijabs. I live in a free country and I enjoy seeing girls wearing skirts not because they want to "provoke" rapists but because they just want to wear skirts.

Your "logic" is typically the kind of thinking wich validates behaviors like fucking unconscious girls or fucking a girl wearing skimpy outfits "because that's what she was looking for". It can be extended to pretty much anything and make it sound normal.
"Don't go outside without a helmet, you're asking to get bludgeonned to death" "Never carry your wallet if you don't want it stolen".
