Hands down it is the 5th movie, it had the best music, most interesting plot, and had enjou tomoe which i think was a decent character and honestly mikiya is kinda boring lol and i know that may piss off some fans. this is just my opinion though

5th because it has the most amazing fight scene and interesting plot twists, plus fantastic characterization and music overall.

I rated 7th as inferior to 5th and 3rd because the antagonist didn't pose as much threat as the ones in 5th and 3rd, when it was supposed to be the final installment. The 7th is more of a character development I guess.

And 2nd for the last because although it is very necessary to the plot, it was kinda boring at some point.

The fifth movie was the most memorable mostly due to the excellent direction but I found the seventh the most entertaining.

7 really did it for me; what an ending to an amazing series. Next up is 5, which was just wow. After that is probably 3, the Fujino story was great. Then 2, which gave us explanations and a backstory, and I just LOVE explanations. 4 is next, it wasn't THAT special but it was still good. Then, 1. It was extremely confusing, but still better than 6 - easily the worst one. Azaka is extremely annoying and I didn't care for the fairy stuff at all.

tl;dr from best to worst: 7, 5, 3, 2, 4, 6, 1.

The fifth movie is the best for me....it's like the epitome of the whole series.

Blood & gore.

Intense action scenes.

A mystical plot which I still don't fully understand.

Awesome soundtrack.

Funnily enough, the second half of it actually made sense when Souren reveals why he did all that stuff to Fujino etc, so it's obviously the climax of the whole series.

Until then, I'd viewed the other episodes as separate cases of what Touko, Mikiya & Co do at work.

Paradox Spiral is definitely the best, fairytale is definitely the worst. All of the others are more or less on the same level of awesomeness. 10s for 5, 3 and 7. An 8 for the sixth one, and 9s for 1, 2 and 4.

I personally consider 5 the best in terms of cinematography, but 7 captured what I felt was the true essence of the series and offered the most critical development for the main characters. 3 was a brilliant standalone story while the rest worked well in developing the story and while 6 was in no way bad, just a solid entry overall in what is essentially a brilliant series.

For me it's not even a fair contest, the 5th is by very far my favorite. Amazing movie i every way. The third is very good and ties with the 7th when I consider the difference in runtime.

To be perfectly honest, the 7th disappointed me a little. It's not that's it's bad, no that's not it not even close, but from its ranking I was expecting to have my mind blown like in the 5th.

7 was the best. It was such... oniristic. Scenes like Mikiya in his way to Ryougi Mansion or Shiki wandering in alleys has so much climate. I think Satsujin Kousatsu 2 has also the mest music and graphics in all series ( even if they are comparable in these therms ). It was a great conclusion to series overall, also had an amazing ending (last scene before credits and this after them). Shirazumi was an entertaining persona (his psychology, being a "maniacal murder" his connection to Araya, and awakening of the source), but I didn't like his drooling (too disgusting).

6 felt like a filler to rest of the series, starring supporting character. Story could go on without this film (but has beautiful graphics and music as well)

I gave 9 to seventh movie, an 8 to third and fifth, a 7 to first, second and fourth and only six to sixth. Had problem with Satsujin Kousatsu, because it was considerably better than 1&4, but still no match to Musun Rasen and Tasuukaku Zanryuu. (I'd gave a 7,5 if I could)

I definitely agree with the sentiment that the fifth movie excelled in its action and pure thrill, whereas the seventh movie had the greatest character development and exposition of Shiki and the concept of killing.

The 6th movie is pretty good, but i feel kind out of place, maybe is because Mikiya's sister.

The 5th movie is my favorite movie of anime and a little bit closer to my favorite movie of all time, the music is god, the animation was god, the story is fucking smart and i fucking loved the direction of this movie, i loved the mindfuck moments, i loved all of it, i have no complaints about Spiral Paradox. But the rest of the movies have 10/10, minus 6th.

7 and 5 are neck in neck for me. I love the intensity of 5, but I think I like just 7 a bit more because it has more of that horrifying and dark yet beautiful and sweet feel that I love the movies so much for. The 1st one I feel is also amazingly done and the intro in it is probably my favorite intro of all time (and I love the monologue connection to it at the end of the movie); a perfect introduction to the series.

This is a very rare opinion at least as far as I've seen, but it's one that I absolutely agree with nonetheless. The 1st one works in setting up the overall atmosphere and narrative style, not to mention it properly introduces the paranormal/supernatural investigative format of the series. No doubt had they started from say, the second movie, I can see how the jump from a dark romance to a supernatural setup would've been jarring for some. It's the very reason why I like the 1st movie as a proper intro into the series, because it provides the starting premise and style of the series, and while it's not heavy on characterization, this is easily rectified by the flashback chapter of the second movie.

7 hands down, the pathos generated is too damn high. Also best ending of all time. :D

The fifth, dunno, it felt quite "heavy" for me. Shiki' s return felt like a liberation the arcs thing made it kind of boring with the repetitions, but i guess there was no other way around to give a good insight of the characters and what they are capable of doing.

I'll try and describe why from worst to best.

Part 6: Oblivion Recording
+ Develops Azaka's character
+ It has some entertaining moments here and there
+ The animation is really good, even in a unique way. This one's animation is very bright and calming.

- The story is simple
- Most of the side characters are pretty bad
- Doesn't really add to the over-arcing story of KnK.
- Azaka's "I love my brother" gig, gets a bit tiring at times.
- The main cast(Touko, Kokutou) get little screen time.

Part 1: Overlooking View
+ It started the KnK movie series.
+ The action scene with Shiki VS Kirie was amazingly choreographed.

- Since it was released first, it was really confusing.
- Kirie was extremely underdeveloped.
- The story was pretty unclear to me.

Part 3: Remaining Sense of Pain
+ The action was amazing.
+ The main antagonist(Asagami) was well developed
+ Gory(But that can be a turn off for some)

- The story is kind of simple
- Asagami was well developed, but she was very single minded, and kind of bland.
- Shiki and Kokutou get shoved aside in terms of development

Part 2: Murder Speculation(Part 1)
+ After the confusion that was Overlooking View, this movie was a welcome change
+ The romance was a very good addition
+ Shiki's personalities are introduced.
+ It, like the 6th movie, has very calming and beautiful art.

- Kokutou is annoying as all hell, in this movie.
- The lack of Touko from the first movie, disappointed me.
- The SHIKI and Shiki personalities, were a bit confusing.

Part 4: The Hollow
+ Finally explains how Shiki got her Mystic Eyes.
+ The romance is more heartfelt than it the second movie.
+ Kokutou is a much better character, who is no longer a naive shit.
+ Shiki gets a huge amount of development.

- It is slightly less enjoyable than the other movies, due to its slow pace.
- The story is simple.

Part 7: Murder Speculation(Part 2)
+ The story was the perfect balance of complexity and simplicity.
+ Shiki's development finally reaches its peak.
+ It ties up the entire franchise perfectly.
+ Lio is a very good villain, although slightly disgusting.
+ The action scenes are amazing.

- Although I love the ShikixKokutou ship, Kokutou is a bit simple in this movie, as if he lost the entirety of his previously gained knowledge.

Part 5: Paradox Spiral
+ The most complex of all the movies, but I still understood it better than any of the others.
+ Its style of story-telling reminds me of Baccano! which is a definite plus in my book.
+ Enjou Tomoe is a gread character, who gets a huge amount of development.
+ Touko finally gets some development and backstory
+ The main puppeteer, Souren is introduced.
+ The action is unbelievably good.
+ The multiple twists throughout the movie are amazing.
+ It tells a separate story set in the KnK universe with KnK character, and wraps it up perfectly.
+ The romance between Enjoe and Shiki is brilliant.

Surprised at how many people give 5 such high marks. As someone who's actually been educated on things like story construction I found it to actually be rather poor from a technical standpoint. 7 on quite the other hand did just about everything right. The rest served their purpose as backstory, but ultimately felt like a mixed bag of storytelling quality. Type Moon has always had a weakness for not establishing the rules of their stories, which leads to things often getting more and more extreme without the viewer having any basis for what 'reality' is and isn't in the story world. In fact, I nearly lost interest when what started as a relatively realistic world in movie 1 suddenly had fairies and robots and wizards and zombies by movie 6. While 7 didn't really address that problem it sufficiently swept it under the rug and tied things together excellently while simultaneously telling a standalone arc that was easily head and shoulders above the rest. The entire series definitely has its merits--there's enough interesting things going on to keep you wondering and wanting to find out what comes next. Movie 7 was just the only one that couldn't be accurately described as a mess (albeit an enjoyable one).

I love all the movies but i have to admit, for me 7 is the best. (Before that 2 was giving me a nice feeling about relationship development between shiki and mikiya.)

Since it gives conclusion to the story and wrap up everything nicely. And one of the best romance story out there.

If i have to choose probably 7>2>5 are the top three

I vote 5, 3, 2, 4, 6, 1, 7.
The last one was poorly written, just used the murders from the beginning and quickly sketched a random villain. The whole 'Shiki is a murderer' didn't need revisiting for a whole film. Shame for the main track of the ost. I wish they had used it from the start. I must admit that I have no idea how in the hell they managed to fill 2 hours with that story. Extra points for fooling me. When it finished, I couldn't believe for how long I had been sitting there.

Ehh, Lio was hardly random. His entire character construction served as the opposing backbone and antithesis towards everything that Shiki and Mikiya's relationship stood for. If Movie 5 was a spectacle of a detour that veered into classic Nasuverse territory of philosophical musing (which hardly even develops its main cast), Movie 7 is the proper ending that the whole series was building up to and to say that it was unneeded misses the entire point of Shiki's characterization and how she's framed against the entire cast of antagonists.

To say that it's merely a "revisit" of Shiki's characterization as a murderer is misguided especially since Movie 7 actually wraps up all of these threads all while giving her character that much needed final development to fully round out what the series was about all this time.
