Yeah, you know what I'm talking about. Those wonderful, illustrious backgrounds and the soundtrack perfectly portrays the world you're currently observing in. So, what anime has the greatest atmosphere? Personally, Natsume Yuujinchou has my heart, it invokes so many feelings. The setting looks very stationary at first but when you gradually see more episodes, you'll discover plethora of amazing, dreamlike settings.

I can't even begin to describe how much Mushishi's atmosphere draws me in with its perfect blend of supernatural mystery and ambiance.

Another one that takes advantage of its incredible art and ost is Seirei no Moribito. It gives me the sensation that I'm immersed in that world, not watching anime.

Natsume Yuujinchou, Aria the Animation, and Tamayura among others have very profound yet relaxing atmospheres that let me feel completely at ease.

In terms of heaviness, Texhnolyze does it best, though Ghost in the Shell (1995) comes close. Anime like Eve no Jikan and Aria are more soothing, while Mushishi is more mystical and ambient. Haibane Renmei and Kino no Tabi are idyllic, although the former also has an air of uneasiness and mystery about it.

You know that the guys behind these anime spent a lot of time creating these wonderful atmospheres, that are complimented by great music and sounds that enhance them.

Yeah I too agree Mushishi reigns supreme when it comes to atmosphere.

Also I would like to add Knights of Sidonia which has a really cool atmosphere that I found to be quite immersive.

Aria - Peaceful and quaint
Haibane Renmei - Calm yet heavy
Bartender - Charming and relaxed
Makoto Shinkai stuff - Pleasant but melancholic
Kara no Kyoukai - Cold and hollow

I can't do this, there's so many, not to mention all the ones mentioned so far that I haven't watched yet.

Mushishi is alright. The atmosphere doesn't really draw me in though. After a few minutes I get bored and have to browse the web or something to bring myself out of a coma

Mushishi obviously. That's probably that show's strongest point.

Madoka Magica and Clannad both have fantastic atmospheres as well, mostly thanks to their absolutely superb soundtracks.

The Haruhi movie does a pretty good job of it too, as mentioned before.

Monster - Perfectly captured that old mysterious and eerie atmosphere, everything might look good at the surface but underneath something is clearly concealed, most old german cities (or certain areas ) has.

Champloo - soundtrack gives it a real laid back atmosphere

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 - I can't fully explain this. Lets just say I actually left like I was in the Yamato.

Casshern Sins - depressing, sad atmosphere

Some great choices. Another worthy contender is Shigurui. The tension the visuals and music create, especially in the fight scenes, is just ridiculous. Also, Wolf's Rain, the OST fits it like a glove and it looks great for it's time.

Mushishi is a given here. It is a show that is almost indescribably in its beauty, and it is absolutely immersive. You can almost feel the textures of that world, the atmosphere is so rich and effective.

Aku no Hana is another example of an anime with perfect atmosphere, not coincidently from the same director as Mushishi. You could just feel the dread oozing out of the screen, and the feelings of isolation and resentment that the characters are submerged in.
Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone.

Paprika - just so dreamy!
Natsume Yuujinchou - warm
Samurai Champloo - relaxing yet badass
Mushishi - mysterious, cold but warm (o.O)
Hourou Musuko - painful, dramatic
Serial Experiements Lain - heavy
Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko - I can't describe it, but it feels somehow dark, for some reason
Nodame Cantabile - peaceful, beautiful
AND Aku no Hana!

My first thought was Garden of Sinners, which expanded to "Just about anything scored by Yuki Kajiura" because of tracks like this:

From what I've seen Mushishi does well. Tokyo Ghoul + Death Note do well in capturing the darkness in their cities whilst Nagi no Asukara and Glasslip are beauty animes.

Say what you want about its quality as a whole, but Another had great atmosphere.

Ghost Hound had a really great atmosphere. The little clips at the beginning of each episode where they did a recap of the last episode, but made them uber creepy really added a lot to the overall tone. That show got trippy.

Death Note was superb in this regard. That soundtrack was perfect, and the direction was beautiful. So many iconic scenes.

Natsume Yuujinchou - It's a really calm atmosphere which usuaally relaxes your soul, its OSTs are very good that go along with the backgrounds and such. It's a really paceful anime.

Naruto - For obvious reasons. It has an interesting village system which gives life to the ninja world. I mostly like the background in naruto though.

Hunter x hunter - Best atmosphere, something I cannot describe in words

ah my goddess Dragon ball z - Nostalgia.
