Actually, you can hear it nice and clear, that he says "orera wa", and right after that comes the interference. (just listened to that part 5 times to make sure my mind isn't going nuts on me)

If you read the novels and know for a fact what was said, ignore me!

But I have a strong feeling that interference was put there at that exact moment to trick us into what was actually said. While I agree that it does sound as if "wa" was said, that could have been a trick of the ears due to the should of the distortion merging into the syllable he said changing the "ra" to "wa".

I have an extremely high opinion of Japanese sound directors, this is something they could easily do something like this. Japanese as a language loves to change syllables based on sound, so this is something that they would play with.

Plus, I think that it helps that the writer is not a Japanese native. Having had to be able to learn to hear the difference between these words (which I free admit is my weakness in Japanese) he would probably have more "top of mind awareness" of these quirks. For native Japanese hearing it would be completely natural.

Oh well, I could be wrong, but that is what makes watching shows like this so much fun, you really have to think about it, but in doing so one can overthink as well.

I have read the novels, but that has very little to do with it.

If you strain your ears a bit, and listen to it very closely, you can hear, that BOTH syllables are present.
Well, that, and basic Japanese sentence structuring. 'Ore' and 'Orera' are both pronouns, meaning 'I/Me' and 'We/Us' respectively. The 'wa' sound after that is similar to the english 'is' (as in It is, I am, we are, etc...) (If there are any grammarl terminology issues present, do excuse me, it was about 12 years ago, that I last gave a flying frell about grammar terminology).

waaaah no Sora ; __ ; u can't leave Shiro aloooonee. Oh well, it seems like we'll get some character development for Shiro. Could it be... That finding Sora is the game itself? *gasp* just spouting things but that episode felt waaay too short. It's torture waiting for the next episode T___T

Practically no fanservice and a still badass Jibril, this episode is great~

i like how they also changed the ending to match the ending of the episode ^^

edit2: best episode so far. there's pretty much no fan-service here (the panty bet doesn't count), and more focus on content, though this was only a transition episode before the next game

Wow this episode was another one that completely blew my mind. Especially the ending. Gimme a sec, I actually teared up a bit at the end. Izuna-tan though~ wow, much cute, such kawaii, very shiro-like. The way that Sora and Shiro figured out everything about the warbeasts is just amazing and it was epic just watching them solving everything and becoming the greatest gambler Imanity has ever seen by betting their "Race Piece". Insanely awesome. 1 word for the warbeasts - #rekt. I don't know what Sora did or where he went but I have some vague idea that Sora made a promise or something that had to do with Tet. Otherwise nobody else has the power to just make a person disappear and wipe him from existance. The reason I was tearing up was because the thing that happened to Sora and how it made Shiro feel is the exact feeling from the movie Steins;Gate where nobody remembers Okabe except Mikase Kurisu. That feeling is just so so sad :'( I cri everytime. Then they altered the ending theme song which is a beautiful song that makes me understand a bit of Sora and Shiro's relationship a bit more, but when Shiro is left standing there all alone it just made me sympathise even more for her~ Poor Shiro :'(
Despite the epic and sad ending (which is showing how interesting next episode is going to be), this episode deserves a 5/5 if not a 6/5 for its brilliant style and how it is setting up the story nicely. Honestly people ought to rate No Game No Life higher~ this anime puts the word "Epic" to good use ^^

Not quite, the "wa" is a nominalizer, it makes the proceeding expressinon the topic of the sentence. So Ore wa would technically "As for I" and orera wa would be "As for we". "Desu" would be the equivalent of the "is" (in the case of that particularl line "ja nai" is "is/are not").

GreenDrag said:

Well, that's my problem, even if I strain my ears I can't hear two syllables, only the one "wa". The interference gets in my way. Now timing wise he does have enough time to say both syllables, but that could be explained that when the screen goes b/w time actually stops of that brief moment.

You are probably right, as I said above I know I have trouble sometimes with hearing.

No not the last one, the fourth one.

The first one is "ore wa", "I believe in you"
The second one is definitely "orera wa" "We are one".
The third one is definitely "orera wa" "We are bound by the promise"
The fifth one about "we win games before they start" is "orera wa".

The fourth one though I can't hear. I can hear the "ore" and the "wa" but not the "ra" which is what is needed to change I to we. The "ra" is cut out by the interference. At least it is to me, but that could be just me.

That ending was trippy. Matrix level trippy.

I'm Upping my rating to 9. IT was at 8 only cause the excessive fan-service was a bit much. But even now I have to say this anime has the "IT" factor going. Much like Steins;gate did. The story is not without flaws and there are some negatives. But IT just has "IT". Once you have "IT" you don't need to explain "IT". You just go with IT and enjoy the ride.

Sora's personality disorder certainly is more evident this time. Nobody could just lightly bet an entire race's well being without thinking of the consequences, even as confident as he is. His reaction to Steph asking how he would take responsibility says it all.

Not necessarily. Remember that last episode Sora said that Shiro was "the real one", which implied that he did not view himself as being real (rather that the was empty), so in this context, that he specifically said "I am not a Shounen Manga hero" would make a good deal of sense since he is sending the person he does think is a hero into battle.

I will admit that I want this to be true, that this is a clue that will become important later because it would be I think pretty nifty writing, and since I honestly cannot hear it, I made the guess there was some meaning to it. But if you also heard it then that is two strikes against me.

Wait a second... I already had a weird feeling when the camera zoomed in or that ds looking device, showing the date [19th].

From my experiences of watching anime and playing VNs, time always plays a huge role in the plot, a clear example would be Steins'Gate.

If you looked closely to the epilogue after the ED, the phone after Shiro checked her contact list shows that it is the [21st]. What happened on the 20th? Why did she have no memories on that day? To me, it feels like she just slept through the 20th, and something of course happened on that day. I wonder what happened??

edit: think Sora is in a alternative timeline? or the world Shiro is in is actually fake? I mean it is possible that she is trapped in a world simulation 'game' of some sort, seeing the kedonomini race is technological advanced, and maybe when the moment that she escapes is when the game clears... That could explain Sora's disappearance into thin air, because he might have just [logged out].

Simply epic! I knew Sora would eventually figure out that the mind reading was fake, but I wouldn't have guessed that something like video games would be their secret weapon.

Poor Shiro! I wonder what happened? Sora went off somewhere to help prepare for the game against the Warbeasts, I assume? Is Shiro in an alternate timeline or something? Someone clue me in on this because I'm a little lost.

This anime continues to be amazing. I'm holding off on reading the Light Novel until the show is finished but damn its getting hard not to read it.

*Clap, Clap,Clap,...*

We are on the beginning to the way to the truth :D

No really, the question is: what happened at the 20th?

Well this is the second thing the anime does better than the LN ;-) But that is far easier to do if you see it animated than if you can only read it.

Sora said those 5 things because they were a clue to Shiro for what is coming, so if there was some confusion over a "i" or "we", that would suggest that the 4th statement was the biggest clue and that it hinged on the difference between those two words. But even if there is no ambiguity with that one word, what he said were clues that will have future implications.

Having not read the novels I have no idea how this is going to work out, I have some guesses:
.
But right now I don't care if I am right or wrong, this ending was interesting, and I can't wait to see what is going to happen next.

So, what you are saying is that the line of "... not the heroes of a shonen manga" is crucial to solve this mystery? Does that mean that Shiro shouldn't act like she's the main character even if she's in a pinch?

That means she should be like the opposite of it? Sora wants her to think carefully of her actions...? He is warning her that every action she decides will affect her future...? o_O

Also, Shiro can't make heads and tails of how Sora thinks in strategy games, because he's always being "sneaky", meaning, that their thinking isn't the same... which has been said several times. (you know, the two of them making the perfect gamer, because they both have the thing the other is weak at).

Also, it might be, that something similar happened to Shiro, that was going on with the elves in their games againts the Eastern Union.

GENUINE SPOILER ALERT!
Hey Caleb, check out Takuan's guess
