So, while on /v/ a while back I found out about this game called "Undertale". I didn't know much about it, but the demo of it was free so I figured "What the heck" and downloaded it and played it. The demo, while unfinished, has a pretty satisfying ending and I found out that the game is pretty awesome.

In it, you play this dude who fell down a cliff into a labyrinth filled with monsters. A monster/bunny/thing named Toriel (sounds a lot like "tutorial", doesn't it?) teaches you that you can beat all enemies and monsters without fighting. This is where the gameplay starts to get unique. It works like one of those top down old-school style RPGs like old Final Fantasy games except that you can talk with enemies and figure out how to calm them down and win fights without actually fighting. All while doing so, you must avoid enemy attacks in a sort of Touhou style where you move an object around avoiding enemy bullets for a select period of time before continuing to talk down the monster/enemy. Outside of combat, the player travels while performing puzzles inside the labyrinth to keep moving.

The music is great too, as it was made and done by the guy who does the music for Homestuck. (whether you like or dislike the comic, the music is pretty rad)

The game also does a fine job at getting you to care about the characters too, and it really tugs at the heartstrings overall. Its a beautiful game, even in its unfinished, demo state, and I highly recommend it.

The official site is here:
http://undertale.com/ (you can download the demo here)

And its original Kickstarter is here:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1002143342/undertale (its already been funded)

Any of you played it? What do you think of the game? Anyone excited for its release later this year?

EDIT: Steam page for the game- http://store.steampowered.com/app/391540/?snr=1_5_1100__1100

Its already been funded. (and its already about halfway finished) And the fact that it was funded on Kickstarter doesn't make it bad.

The demo. Just play the demo.

So if something starts on Kickstarter it's bad..?

Divinity: Original Sin is an amazing isometric RPG that received over $1mil funding on Kickstarter and reached all stretch goals, and only a few days ago it went into Beta phase. Honestly, sure there is some complete crap on there, but just since something is on Kickstarter, doesn't mean it's terrible. Plus when you pledge money it doesn't leave your account until it becomes successfully funded.

UnderTale has a new trailer and has been added to Steam Greenlight. Its finally almost out.

That music is downright sexy in how good it is.

Its out.
And it appears the soundtrack went from like 20 tracks to 70 tracks. Sweet.
Anyone playing this? How are you going to play it? Kill everything in sight? Do a pacifist route? Or somewhere in between?

It gets compared to Mother a lot. And considering a mother-like character is important to the story...

But anyways, I know how you feel. I've got way too many games to beat. But I'm going to put aside time to play this one. I'm putting MGS5 to rest for a little while.

I never followed development, but I knew about the game since its creator Toby Fox is famous among the Homestuck fandom for his music work on the comic itself. Gotta say, it looks pretty damn beautiful and interesting.

Yes.
Its actually now the second highest rated game on Steam. 800+ positive reviews, 5 negative reviews. Lots of little detail in the game. Has a fantastic story any JRPG fan can appreciate. Also good for bullet hell fans.

Jim gave it a 10/10

Undertale is one of the best roleplaying games I’ve ever played, and I do not say that lightly.

Earthbound is one of my favorite things, so I've had my eye on this one since the kickstarter, though never got around to backing it for some reason.. Good to see it seems to be living up to those early impressions, and then some.

Its got some Earthbound influence, but its its own thing. Its not quite like any other game out there.

Got undertale today. Was doing a full pacifist run until I hit that Toriel boss fight. Sparing didn't seem to do anything nor did talking so I thought it was one of those fights where you had to weaken her until mercy was allowed.

Was doing moderate damage when I suddenly crit her for some reason. Ended up being the killing blow. Fuck, that was painful to watch.

Reload a save before killing her and try again. You can figure it out. Stay determined.

What's funny is that no one cared about it until after its full release, meanwhile I was on the hype train as much as 2 years ago. But NOOOOO. Its overrated as hell!

Should've jumped on the train years ago like I did.
>indie garbage
Stop using that word. Something being indie doesn't mean anything. There are good indies, and there are bad indies, like anything else. I don't get why people bother separating them.
But I agree that Binding of Isaac is meh. At least it has good music.

Eventually, I did figure it out.
Went through the door and then flowey went meta and laughed at me.
The fucker knew I reloaded a save and that I regretted killing her.
He's right
It was humiliating.
And pretty clever on Toby's side.
Can't wait to skin this flowey asshole.

Flowey deserves your compassion and empathy just as much as any other monster in the game.
Also, he doesn't have skin. He's a plant.

Game has visuals and sounds in it that couldn't be in something from 30 years ago. Some instruments sound like real instruments and some graphics are visually well beyond anything in games even as little as 20 years ago.
But anyways, the reason people needed to fund it was so that the dev could devote time to it and presumably not need to have a job and thus less time to work on it.

Finished both pacifist and genocide routes earlier. Gotta say that the game has some absolutely stellar designs. I don't believe I have ever seen fourth-wall breaking being integrated so impactfully well into a video game before, and the amount of detail and humour hiding behind its retro graphics is nothing short of mindblowing.

It makes me re-think if video gaming really is going in the right direction investing so much resources into visual fidelity. Imagine, with the same game design, but a full dev team and funding like the Double Fine kickstarter (for superior visuals), we'd have a guaranteed GOTY on our hands.

This game is the work of a genius. If he stays in the industry after college, he could probably end up as a top game director like Todd Howard or Ken Levine, or pave his own way like Notch.

I had a feeling when Undertale was still in early development that it was going to have a decent following (since it had a lot of "Mother" vibes), but didn't expect it to reach a cult following-like status.

It's already spawned hundreds of fanmade works like:

Props and Congrats to Toby.
