The franchise is worth 14.1 billion yen (more then dragon ball/precure). Is their something special to this show that made it such a hit or is it just a idol version of precure?

Does being a male and liking this in japan make you look weird or is it normal?

Well, mere kids wouldn't make that possible.

Sunrise brought a "plot" to a idol school story; the Aikatsu girls aren't really moe and don't try to be, there is no ecchi; it's just a simple story, but a good one. Nowadays shows are about cute girls or about boobed bitches, but Aikatsu is different, and people like the unusual.
It reminds me of shonen, today they're all about comedy and friendship, I miss the crazy battles, blood and drama from 90s.

It's pretty much criminal when you consider all the other franchises Namco Bandai has that are worth as much or more. Don't forget it's also an extremely successful arcade game much like Idolmaster started off as though. It's not just that they have the shows to promote these, it's that they also make a massive amount of profit off of horizontal integration and various multimedia tie-ins.

I don't know much about the show itself, but I do follow Sunrise stuff a fair bit and I've noticed they do tend to do a lot of things differently or rather more traditionally like the guy above me suggested since they've been around for so damn long, so it could have something to do with that too since as I understand it the show is pretty popular in Japan as well. A lot of producers, writers, directors and general planners nowadays tend to do things almost backwards where they worry about the moe aspects and doing these elaborate cute scene setups or just have cute girls doing cute things whereas Sunrise productions while sometimes having those elements too (particularly Studio 8) often seems to have a more ambitious concept in mind for their anime or barring that just put the emphasis on things that should matter like character development and a continuing plotline as well as characters having goals and ambitions of their own that they seek to achieve by the time things are over and it becomes a focus rather than just something the cast occasionally flirts with while doing stuff that is considered moe like say K-On. I find it makes a big difference when you see a character you actually care about and or interested in for something beyond their design and personality quirks do something in a show that matters to them or others that will have some sort of lasting impact than when they just do something because it's part of a character archetype and nothing more.

So yeah I'm going to say it's success is probably just the producers at Namco Bandai/Sunrise having their ducks in a row more than most and knowing how to market and deliver a satisfying product for the target audience that goes above and beyond expectations.

Shit, this is that big in Japan? That's kinda cool.

I'd be more happy for it if this second season didn't feel like such a waste.

I thought this was a show for little girls at first but was surprised to learn that it's mostly grown men who enjoyed this show.

Why? I would say that kids (and their parents) are more than enough to make it as big as it is. after all it does appeal to way bigger group than typical otaku, so more people are going to buy more stuff than from some late night anime.

it worked well for Precure or Pretty Rhythm (they were planing to make 5 billion yen on this if I recall).

It's not like that is somehow an unique property of Aikatsu, especially if you look at other morning show franchises and some late night shows as well. Shows like this have existed for decades. Some deliver better than others and chances are you will sometimes stumble on a good season. That's all there is to it. And the girls are moe, precisely because they do things that make you relate and care about them. Working to make your dreams come true, growing as a person, forming bonds etc. You watch stuff like this because you want to see the journey of their life, which isn't all too different from watching something like sports anime or even some battle shows.

it's the characters, man. the plot of them becoming idols...that drama isn't intense enough for me to stay interested but their personalities really shine. w/ that said, i can pretty much put up w/ all the useless stuff they do. sometimes it can be strangely enjoyable.

Its an anime for little girls, so this has a lot of merchandise: toys, CD of music, DVD of the episodes, clothes, etc. So is so simple why the entire franchise has a lot of money.

Little girls and in general kids want all that see on tv, so its easy to make money.

and what does that have to do with the profit in japan? I don't expect Ping Pong to be the top grossing.

It is really big with little girls. I don't think something like Aikatsu needs a "reason" to be popular with its demographic, lol.

When I saw the movie almost everyone there was a parent taking their daughter (probably from like kindergarten to 3rd grade or so). Assuming all those kids want Aikatsu cards, and play the arcade game, and have the DS game, and buy the candies and stuff at the supermarket...etc. Also pizza hut even did a tie in with it earlier this year/last year. The franchise is booming.

I am sure it helps that it does have appeal outside of its age group with older people investing in the blurays and CDs.
