THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I guess every series needs its own annoying character. In the middle of an important operation that annoying kid (won't even call him by his name) kept daydreaming to the point of almost killing his commander... *shakes head*
In my book, should have been discharged. It wasn't just once.

Anyway, that aside, those two finally meet... I hope there isn't much development in romance or I will think that that is what this show is about. Or what the first episode hinted at anyways.

well, that's what this show is about: the feelings of normal people. from the start this was the intention.

and i really like the diversity of the characters. Each anime needs its Michel :)

Michel was a bit annoying this episode with his whining and spacing out all the time, but I still thought it was a great episode.
I like how this Gundam focuses a lot on the characters. Imagine staying in that desert for five days, there can't be a lot to do while waiting.
The encounter with the Apsalus was really sweet, that thing is a beast.

Nothing captivating really happened until the battle...which lasted like five minutes. Interesting character development, though, I guess.

Honestly... this 'character development' is stupid. It's a god damn army and a war. The 'drama' just seems over the top

Michael is a god damn prepubescent kid that apparantly wants to fight in a war but gets scared at any fights...

Pretty normal actually: they ARE human. Unlike some other anime characters that are just made to be pure badassery and all good/cool stuff to the point that they don't look human at all, here I can actually think of them as human since they are not perfect.

Very nice scenery when Karen rappelled down the cliff, early on.

Michel is pathetically immature. He can't even press specified buttons when explicitly told to, because he's fretting over a slightly overdue letter. And then he freezes up in combat, waiting for the slow-moving particle beam to swallow him up. I would wish for a background to justify such a wimp, but he's too boring to care.

I really liked the short conflict between Shiro and Aina. It was cool seeing the Gundam shredded to pieces against a mountain, and the rising trail of smoke that followed.

Over the top drama when a soldier is shown as something else than a ruthless killing machine? Making a big fuss over a "slightly overdue letter" that couldn't be so "slightly" (they could just as well be waiting for more than "just" five days), not to mention they're his only means to keep going in this war?

Sure, it's a bit of a childish romance situation, but compared to other childish dramas in UC Gundams, it felt more natural and not just a poor excuse to create some handicap for the next battle. I myself think the build up to the events of this episode was competent enough, even if it's obvious they're just trying to highlight each character one at time. Myself, I'm more annoyed with Kiki popping up everywhere, even though she was more useful this time than the last episode.

Well, seeing a Gundam getting destroyed like that, it's always a nice sight.

A Dear John letter is probably one of the worst things that can happen to a person while they're deployed. You’re trapped in place far from home and helpless to fix your relationship. Something like that can break the strongest soldier you can find.

Michel's concerns are all valid but Kiki is so damn annoying.
I hated when she just took the letter was laughing while reading it.
Why is she even there she's not even part of the team.

Top notch animation for the mid 90s, just great.

So much this.
What an insufferable brat. People being super harsh with Michel when he had legitimate reasons to space out and be concerned and all, while Kiki has been annoying as fuck during this entire episode (and the episodes before that). I mean kicking someone in the goddam face ? What the hell.
I seriously hope she either changes for the better or gets less screen time, cause as of now I can't stand her.

And yeah, the animation makes me drool too.

Except it was Michel who was not paying attention and almost got Shiro killed. If Kiki hadn't kicked him, Shiro would be dead and the show would be over. But, nope, Kiki is the bad one. Sounds legit.

Anyways, I also found Michel to be on the annoying side this episode. I don't mind the whole B.B. thing, but having already not liking the guy it's just another cherry on top of the annoyance cake. I'm liking Karen, a lot, though. Gundam needs more of her.

Whoa this was a really, really good episode, 10/10 from me.

Everything was just top notch from directing and dialogue to the crazy production values.

I'm considering a favorite spot for this, if it keeps it up.

I actually like Kiki but wanted to punch Michel in the face this episode (he got plenty of that last ep). The character development seems really nice in this series which makes it different from other Gundam ones.

I wonder what will happen now that Shiro and Aina will see each other again.

I don't have a problem with her waking Michel up, though; it's just the way she did it (seemed completely OTT & unecessarily violent).

This episode was straight up shoujo. Like wtf is up with all this romance/drama? Kiki shouldnt be there, she had her 1-2 episodes, thats it, move on, and this kid MICHEL, why didnt they do like the original gundam and kill his ass? The episode did a good job of pissing me off, and if that was their intent then great job.

Maybe not- They could turn the show into The 08th MS Team Alternative and go through Michel's PTSD arc after grinding Shiro into meat

This episode was excellent. The amount of emphasis placed on characters in the UC have never been so much and intensely felt. In the end, Tomino is just great for creating the franchise. It is his 'underlings' which made the following Gundams a huge hit, especially those not of his own work. Look at the amount of Wing, Seed and 00 fanboys. 08th MS, while more obscure, proved to be one of the better titles out there. Having seen this intense episode, I get the idea why this is a decent Gundam series. Half left to go.

The episode was great, but damn it seems we're getting everyone's problems. Sanders, Eledore, and now Michel. Won't be surprise if we'll see Shiro and Karen in the next few episodes.

Even though i love the realism and more human interaction compared to the other series. I wanted to brightslap Michel for acting like an immature brat. He's stupid actions could have killed everyone if he wasn't paying that much of an attention.

Kiki seems to be in loved with Shiro which was expected, but i was hoping they would develop some more. It seems that Kiki just developed feelings to Shiro out of nowhere just by spending time with him. What happened to her and being mad with Shiro for peeking at her???

Looks like Aina and Shiro we'll be seeing each other once more. I never really realized Shiro had some sort of feelings towards Aina. I know they both survived being stranded, but i feel they don't really know each other to the point of developing some serious relationship.

Anyways we're half the show now. Can't wait for the next episodes!

The operation was interesting, the delay and the environment greatly affected the growing tension and despair of the "character of the day" (or one of them), making something sad the worst possible event (who could have led to a death).
Michel did annoy me at times but it was acceptable since he had no way to release his stress.

Kiki was more relevant than before but still gets on my nerves with her crush. By the way, I wasn't expecting from this little southeast asian to read the letter, she might come from one of those ancient french colonial lands.

B.B. ... At first it reminded me of Brigitte Bardot, but now even more due to Michel nationality.

Let's now see the Shiro/Aina themed episode! (at first, I thought it would be a Karen episode)

Kiki not only annoyed me as a person would, in fiction terms it was nothing bad but felt useless. Until the character was exploited in a very interesting way. Right before vanishing... So "useless" is what stucks with me (despite her part in the best OAV of the series).Try to make peoples here understand this difference between peoples and characters worth... just remember about how EVAs characters are liked (or not), there is no hope.
As for your PS, no, I didn't like her even as a character (nor did I dislike her if I remember).

Beam technology was almost nonexistent in 0079, exactly. That was part of the big breakthrough that the Gundam weapon project was. But since then, it had become an "expected component" of the saga, notably thanks to Zeta that made beam weaponry ubiquitous (turning the action into a certain type of ... you'll see). So, despite the inconsistency, this series "had to" feature beams. (just like 0083 had to go bigger/stronger with its suits)

Much better than last week for sure. Ya Michel was annoying but ultimately it tied into the rest of the episode well. Kiki offering to deliver his letter for made me like her a lot more than before. Eledore's song was good moment before the battle. Half way through and the first episode to end on a cliffhanger.

I like the focus on the soldiers, each episode we see that there are mundane things bothering these people, who are at war, and at any moment could lose their life or end up seriously injured. These kinda scenarios can drive someone to a state of mind that would never happen under normal circumstances. How many of us can actually say how we would react in a war scenario with all our doubts and anxiousness? Or how many of us have actually been there?

The episode was really good, I like too see how everyone is human, but the emotions are not actually that overdone compared to say, Macross or the earlier Gundams. And the action by the end was fantastic, great animation and coloring, not to mention the whole tension! This may already be under my favorite Gundam things.

My god Eledore was an ass, but Michel is so stupid he's going to get everyone killed, that's even worse.

He deserved more than the judo throw, a few slugs to the face were also needed.

Everyone has emotions, but damn it soldiers need to put them aside to get the job done, otherwise you get killed. Get over it Michel.

Oh, and this is the last episode to be directed by the original director, all the rest are made by another man.

P.S. Am I the only person on this site enjoying Kiki or what?

P.P.S. Our team has beam guns already, huh. Is it actually consistent with the original movie trilogy? I have a continuous question wandering in my head about this show having too many Gundams way too early.

Is Michel's girlfriend Brigitte Bardot? It would made sense if it was a reference to her, since they're french. Best episode yet, the conflict between Shiro and Michel was really well done and I find Kiki less annoying than some people think. I mean, she's not even a soldier and she still risks her life on the battlefield, don't expect her to act like she has some training.

Alas, the letter-run is the first good scene in this anime since episode 1. Too bad it was ruined with the Shiro/Kiki melodrama later. Gundam, you suck at love stories. Stop doing love stories. Can the people who call this show realistic explain to me why?
