That was entertaining, aside from all of the attempted over-exaggerated emotion. I've noticed that this series has a lot of that in it - don't get me wrong, it's a-okay to have the feels in anime.. just with not as much emphasis as this puts on it.

Looking forward to the next match.

I really liked getting the perspectives of the defeated, especially the third year captains. It really throws down a more powerful view on how for every victor, there will be a team that has to go through that.

I really liked what´s portrayed in this episode. If there is a winner, there should also be a loser. For a dream fulfilled, there are also many dreams crushed and regrets left. Though from the parts i read from the manga, this seemed to be a one-time-thingy.
Also really liked the 4th-wall breaking about protagonists especially in shounen ^^

Really emotional episode. D: When Michimiya started crying that really got to me...and all of the people who lost their matches. I felt like this episode depicted loss and coping with it really well.

Noya cheering everyone on in the end was awesome though! He's so cool honestly. Can't wait for the next match. O:

I really liked how absolutely no one was willing to give up. Actually felt pretty bad for the opponents. Same with the girls. Although they will feel somewhat pointless if they never appear ever again…

Damn Noya is awesome. That rolling awesome was pretty awesome. So hyped for this match!

Episode interesting, engaging narrative and loads of different emotions, really great. The screenplay has well expressed the feelings of the people and the atmosphere that you live in a tournament. Drawings and animations well made, the next episode seems more intriguing than today.

Aw, sucks for the girls, but I knew from how she-captain spoke about her members not coming to practice that they would get wiped out :( Wish they had more potential but it's not about the girls' team anyways haha. Kiyoko should help out the girls lol. Her shots are accurate in the break clips where they spike the water bottle :P

Datekyo's cheer team is annoying sounding lol. Especially the lead cheer dude *cringe*

I want a spin-off anime about the girls team.
Me too! It's a really nice touch to remind us of the existence of the girls team and their own struggles.

That episode really stands out among a huge number of already great episodes by giving insight into the feelings of the defeated (a.k.a all these extras who're fated to live in the shadow of the protagonists). That sequence where the POV kept changing from team to team but the ball still followed the same direction was nothing short of fantastic. Let's not forget the fact that it was the perfect occasion to showcase Karasuno's tremendous progress as a team.
The author really took what would otherwise be a fairly mundane match for Karasuno and managed to use it to its full potential. Kudos

I know there's still like 9 episodes left, but those last episodes will have to be a special kind of terrible to prevent me from giving Haikyuu!! any less than a solid 9/10.

ps: meanwhile in oikawa's mind
srsly tho; that fucker is dangerous

probably there'll be another episode where asahi gets more character development as he fights against dateko's wall. hinata and asahi need to provide enough offensive power and with genius kageyama backing both of them up this could be doable.

I think one of the best things about Haikyu is that they kind of make you like a lot of their opponents by making them real people with backgrounds and reasons to be playing, instead of Gods who look down on everyone, like Kuroku Basketball

This episode broke my heart, especially the montage. It's such a relatable feeling. Are you less of a person if you didn't work your hardest? They all deserved to feel sad. If you label yourself as an extra you will never be a protagonist.

This was a good start of the tournament. I liked the addition of showing how the losers feel after the lost match. All this "Let's believe we'll win" talk is getting me so hyped up for the coming matches.

The "Go go. Let's go. Let's go Dateko" chant is stuck in my head now...

I played Volleyball in high school, and this only makes me wish we had a good team and could play in such huge tourneys. We never had anything like that, we just played against local schools throughout the season. I am way more hyped for this team than I ever was for my own school LOL. If only RL could be like anime though.

Favorite episode of the series so far!

I especially liked the parallels between Michimiya and Ikejiri in that they are both inspired by Daichi, yet don't really have that same innate drive he has. They obviously enjoy Volleyball, but don't live and breathe it like most of the Karasuno guys.

Also, hats off to the creator for actually giving the girls' teams a little screen time in an anime that focuses on male team sports. I think this is the first time I've seen it happen XD

Looks like Dateko vs. Karasuno is gonna be a close call. I'll be kinda gutted for Asahi if they don't pull it off...still, I can't see them being knocked out this early ;-;

Ikejiri mumbling some inspirational words to mimic Daichi somehow inspiring his entire team to play better and more resolved was melodramatic and silly. As was seeing him and Yui's devastation that came from losing. Was it bad? Not necessarily. Was it well done? No. If a story wants us to care deeply about someone's drastic emotional state it has to be someone we care about, meaning it has to give us a reason to care about them. Yui is cute. Ikejiri was a cool guy. But by not seeing them work hard to get here and then spending so much time on their crushed spirit with sad music and flashbacks is too much. I like what it was there to do, to show us and Hinata just how hard everyone is working, how everyone wants to win, and everyone wants to play longer. I also understand that defeat can be crushing, I'm sure Ikejiri and Yui would feel the way they did in real life unarguably. However the method of focusing on them to the degree Haikyuu did is where my qualms are. This was more so worse with the newly introduced Ikejiri than with Yui since we had more of a background for her. In fact, I found the way she, was inspired by Daichi to be a strong captain for her team, alike how Ikejiri was to play passionately and stay motivated, only to walk away and break into her weakness when she wasn't around her team to be nearly perfect. Nearly, because it would have had so much more impact if the audience got a little more respect from the anime and it didn't tell us to our face that she was going to break down when alone. Imagine her walking after being so inspirational and strong only to break down into tears out of nowhere because it wasn't said it would happen. It would have been so much more powerful. These are my problems of the Ikejiri and Yui scenes, as well as what I liked about them. They were certainly a mixed bag.

Noya screaming "DAMN IT" showed his passion and the teams seriousness to Ikejiri's team and the audience well. I had assumed Noya was only as caring and understanding as he was towards Asahi, but we saw that that's not the case and that it branches off to the rest of the team this episode. He did his rolling thunder to get everyone's attention and lighten their moods before this tense match, and then let them know it would be okay, that he would be there to cover for them all! What a beautiful little guy.

Blushing Kageyama was so cute.
I think it came from a place of understanding for Hinata. Both have the same drive to stay on the court, and I think Kageyama had a mix of being happy for Hinata, perhaps uncomfortable by the attention he was drawing, but also at a place of deep understanding for him. It was a meaningful moment that hit him hard. :)

And we got the rematch with Dateko coming up. I'd imagine it would come far later honestly!

I feel so bad for them but, I'm so glad that they show the side of the losing teams... Life is just like that, there's always someone who's on top and it can be you; just don't forget that it doesn't always work that way because you could also be the one who will be at the bottom.

loved this episode ☹

that was so disheartening.....when one team wins, another loses, and doesn’t mean they didn’t work as hard or are not as passionate, that was so sad ☹☹ that scene was done nicely to show all the defeated players, beautiful art direction.

new OP and ED are lovely (especially ED) but i miss the previous OP & ED alr

Nice episode. I love how Karasuno was still serious even if they were only a point away from victory. Didn't make me feel bad about the other team, with Daichi's friend in it, getting destroyed. Great handling of this situation. Though I have to say I hated the girls part. If you are not going to put any focus on it, don't show it at all. It was a random fight with no emotions, nothing more nothing less.

Fantastic episode, focusing on the meaning of defeat is a pretty strong point for this anime. We had something like that in KnB, but here it's taken on a another level, coming from the viewpoint of players in many different positions, creating a bigger, all-encompassing idea.

Now i'm depressed because i want spin-off about Karasuno girls' team. I love Michimiya and the other girls from the team are pretty hot and interesting.
This sucks that the teams got eliminated after one loss. I blame this stupid system. Let them play a few matches on group stage, God damn it!
They train for whole year for one fucking game and that's it?!? Fuck this system!

1st half was kind of nice, loved they didn't dragged that match too much, but felt that the karosuno's girls team was out of place. if they would have some foreshadowing and stuff i really wouldn't care, but the way it was shown it felt like filler.
on the other hand they did great in the 2nd half of the episode, i'm glad they didn't made full episode just before dateko match, it was short and nice epilogue and next episode the real action seems to come up.

Loved it. It was sad to see Ikejiri lose. I like that the opponents in Haikyuu are also people who want to genuinely win rather than a team full of egoistic people who just look down on others.

Rolling Thunder makes a long awaited comeback :P
With the upgraded Again Version.

And, now we are up against Date Kogyo.
Their chant "Go, go, let's go, let's go, Dateko." is quite catchy. The next task is to fly past the Iron Wall.
