Episode 29:

Thanks as always for the extra details, Yoshi! I didn't realise 3rd was important - is that still the case in Japanese baseball? Just because I've never seen 3rd batter being mentioned as anything special in any baseball anime; only the fourth.

I have another question too, this time rule-based rather than strategy - let's say for example there's two-out and a runner on third. The batter hits a fly, but the runner on third runs for home base. If the runner makes it home before the fly-ball gets caught making it three-out, does the run count or no?

Thanks and no problem. As you can probably tell, I love talking baseball. No, he is out in that case. Any out that doesn't require a tag will not score the runner. The runner is just hoping the outfielder drops the ball in this case. If there is only 1 out in this case, the runner must wait until the ball is caught and then tag/touch third base before coming home. "Tagging Up" is the term used here and it is only required on balls caught in the air.

Now, lets say the runner is on second and the batter hits a ground ball out in the outfield. The batter rounds first and is going to second as the runner rounds third and is going home. If the runner scores before the batter is tagged out at second, then the run counts. The inning ends because of the third out, but the run is counted.

Yeah, the #3 hitter is an important batter. The #4 hitter, being the guy that usually hits the most homeruns and has the most power, is often more glorified. #3 hitter is like the most solid in all areas, good average, power, speed, etc. They aren't the best at any of the areas, but are the most well rounded. Generally speaking. Japanese baseball follows this formula as well, but they certainly aren't afraid to shake things up from time to time and run some odd orders. I haven't watched any other baseball anime, but I watch quite a bit of Nippon Professional Baseball. Quite a few stars from their league have made it over to the states in the last few years.

Ahh!! I understand much better now, thanks Yoshi :D Really thorough reply. Very helpful - I love learning about this kind of thing. We don't get baseball shown on tv in the UK, so I can't really watch it unless I pay for a streaming service (can't afford) or something. OTL

@Sandy: Are you sure what Yeung spoke was chinese? He's from Taiwan, isn't he?

And thanks Yoshi for the info!
Like Sandy I have mostly seen the 4th (and 5th & 6th after him) being emphasized in baseball anime, not really the third though. It makes sense though considering he always gets to play first inning even if the first two get taken out.
Unfortunately baseball isn't a thing in my country either and before I've seen it in anime (what was my first baseball anime anyway? Maybe Oofuri? Cross Game? Idk) I always grouped it together with american football as the two US sports that are boring to watch. I didn't know shit about either of them, but learned the rules through anime and while I still think american football is boring as hell to watch (it stops every 3 seconds, seriously) I'm definitely craving some baseball, just because I never had the opportunity to see a match (football is fairly popular in austria compared to baseball so in that case I know what I'm talking about).
Anime (Ippo) also got me into watching real MMA, though I still think boxing alone is pretty lame to watch most of the time. But I love the UFC since I started it to get over finishing Ippo 1,5 years ago xD
I probably regret this post by now.

American Football, the greatest sport on Earth, is played like a chess match. A very brutal chess match. It is the most strategic sport I've ever been a part of (physical sports that is). Baseball is pretty strategic too, but not on the same mass level. It is pretty brutal on the body though. I had a game Saturday night, and am just now able to walk without significant pain, haha. I'm on the interior though (the Line), where we are banging every play. Certain positions have it a bit easier.

I couldn't imagine someone not liking American Football after learning the rules and how the game is played. It is truly glorious. One problem is, it is too American dominant. Soon though, the NFL is going to expand to Europe. They are trying to get a London based team within the next several years. I think that would be awesome and help spread the greatness that is Football around the world.

Well, it's not so much that I don't like the game and how it works, but in practice whenever I've seen a football match (be it super bowl or austrian league) they just stare each other down, then the game starts you don't see anything for 2 seconds then there's a whistle and they start rearranging the same thing half a meter to the left/right taking about 2 minutes before we get another 2-4 seconds of scuffling. Rinse and repeat.
I'm aware that this is not true all the time, but enough of the time to make the sport a borefest to watch, imo. I think you need some emotional attachment to really enjoy the matches.

Not saying that the rules and game mechanics aren't interesting, but I had more fun watching golf on TV than american football xD.

@Higashi-san: Yeah, I'm sure it was Chinese :3 Mandarin is the main official language of Taiwan. Plus, I recognised a couple of words :P

ALSO YES, I TOO WOULD LIKE YOSHI'S OPINIONS ON MAJOR lol. I dunno, I still feel like OoFuri nailed the in-game aspects a lot based on what I've heard people say, even if just for how long the games were, but again a more expert opinion would be great.

Clutch hitter just means someone who consistently gets hits in the clutch (important moments in the game). Some examples could include hits with runners in scoring position (on 2nd or 3rd) in close games, at the end of the game when the game is on the line, when a big momentum boost is needed, whenever your opponents have the momentum and it badly needs changed to your team, etc. Your clutch hitter(s) is who you rely on the most to pull through whenever your team really needs a hit.

Great episodes, I was really happy to finally see Tanba on the mound as well!
I have to say the pace has slowed down a bit, a lot of kinda repetitive 'filler' shots in between the plays and stuff, plus the recaps got longer I think. They're probably having a certain point in the story in mind to end the season on. Well, not that it bothers me too much, I was just surprised to see the match not end in these 3 episodes (now I have a bad cliffhanger to deal with xD).
Anyway, enjoyable episodes, I liked how more players of the enemy team were introduced/fleshed out a bit.

Also keep the gifs coming Yoshi, very educating to see prime examples of what you and the show are talking about. I'd also appreciate one of those links, maybe I'll check out some random game soon (or if you recommend an upcoming game).

I enjoyed this episode quite a lot. The next pitcher seems strong and fired up against Seido so hopefully it'll be a good match. Depending on how long it lasts I may wait until it finished to continue the show though, the cliffhangers during a match are killing me xD.
