| What are some manga that you guys find overrated or underrated on MAL?? Personally, while i think MAL gives really accurate ratings for anime, MAL as a community doesn't always offer fair ratings for manga. Some criteria to keep in mind. Keeping in mind that there are 14366 ranked manga in MAL's database, and following this distribution roughly, 1 - 2% of all manga 2 - 5% of all manga 3 - 8% of all manga 4 - 12% of all manga 5 - 23% of all manga 6 - 23% of all manga 7 - 12% of all manga 8 - 8% of all manga 9 - 5% of all manga 10 - 2% of all manga That means roughly... 10 = 1st to 300th 9 = 300th to 1000th 8 = 1000th to 2100th 7 = 2100th to 3900th 6 = 3900th to 7100th ... So if there is some manga that you would give a 9/10, and it is ranked 1200th, it is not really severely underrated. On the other hand, if there is a manga that deserves 6/10, and it is 500th on MAL, it would be considered overrated in your book. Finally, keep in mind overrated/underrated is subjective. That being said, users should do their best to give reasons as to why it is overrated/underrated or else this thread will be locked. |

| You do know that labeling a manga as 'underrated' or 'overrated' is highly subjective, do you? That being said, I don't find a point in making this topic... Just for the sake of it though, I'm going to say Akumetsu is underrated (despite having quite a high average already). |

Overrated: 20th century boys (4th) - it's pretty good, but not as good as 4th in MAL. Annarasumanara (44th) - someone please explain. Homunculus (298th) - seriously?! Hoshi no Samidare (98th) - not seeing why. Noblesse (45th) - slow-paced, and not really offering a great story. Yet, nothing but praises from a lot of people |

| Overrated: the big 3 (We all know which ones) Underrated: Deus Ex Machina *Two reasons why this so under the radar. One, the name itself is confusing. If you don't know what I mean, Google the name and you'll get everything else but the manga unless you add "manga" aftewards. Secondly if the fact a chapter is released every few months if we're lucky. Don't get me wrong, its a very good manga (22 chapters currently) with a strong female character, a mech for a partner and à touch of the "old west" influence. |

| Objectively the most overrated manga is Dorohedoro. Why? Because the score would be 0.06 lower were it not for this one score manipulator. Meaning it would be ranked about 65th instead of 42nd. If that doesn't make something overrated, I don't know what does. |

If not I don't see how the score is manipulated? Either one person or a single, small, organised group of people working in unison in a deliberate attempt to manipulate stats. Every single one of those accounts has: 20 or fewer manga on their list (usually either one or four) Dorohedoro as one of them, with between 110 and 123 chapters marked as read and a score of 9 or 10 Every series given a score but no scores on the list between 4 and 7, with 3s and 8s being extremely rare. And any series in their list will either always be given a score of 1-3 on every account or a score of 8-10 on every account. No plan to watch or plan to read list. No forum posts or comments No "about me" section No manga favourites from outside a group of just 6 series If they have any manga favourites then it will include Dorohedoro (this one has one exception from the entire list). Usually between 20 and 40 anime on their list, usually from the same 60 or so series (this latter figure is a guesstimate) All are accounts created within the last 6 months (plus a couple of days), and all set their reading figure for Dorohedoro within a week and have not changed it since. Older ones of the accounts that have logged back in almost always have done so to add Pandora Hearts to their reading list and manga favourites. No more than one anime favourite from outside a group of just 7 series. If they have any anime favourites then it will include at least one of the Higurashi series and usually Angel Beats as well. Except for a small handful that feature only Pico x CoCo x Chico instead Favourite characters list which usually includes most of the following: Nico Robin Kousaka Kirino Ryuuguu Rena Furude Rika Light Yagami Saber, Hanyuu, Otonashi Yuzuru and Lelouch Lamperouge show up a lot as well, and there are quite a few that have all 9 of these characters on their favourites list, as well as the group making up almost half the favourites of CoCo out of all users on the entire site. And there are 123 of them. |
