I asked a friend of mine which source of entertainment does he prefer between anime and video games. He said " I prefer anime because I watch it for free."

This made me realize that I have watched over a hundred anime and I never paid anything for it, I don't buy dvds or any merchandise either; I just watch anime....for free?? Is that why anime is so popular nowadays since it's easy to stream? What do you think?

You can find anything free if you put your mind to it. Keep in mind most of it is illegal, however.

It's free.

If you illegally stream it from illegal websites.

If you stream it from legal sources without buying their membership or whatever it's still free.

It's not popular because it's free, it's popular because it's anime.

I've already gone the path of pirating, so unless it suddenly becomes a huge crime if you illegally stream anime, I'm not stopping.

Buying merch/dvd's occasionally is nice though.
every single one of my forum posts is dumb and invalid except for 1, I don't claim them it was a different person it was all fake

pretty much this ^

Free and legal streaming exists though, like Crunchyroll. Although on Crunchyroll, with airing series you have to wait a week until you can watch the new episodes.

Since the producers of the anime we watch aren't expecting to get money from us anyway we don't have to feel obliged to support the industry in any way. I personally like to buy some anime stuff.

all anime is free! bby c; *rips off shirt and dives into a pool of cherry blossoms and angsty bishounen tears*

I think the fact that anime is free[!] has made it more accessible and thus easier to become popular, but of course, that's only one factor of appeal. It's good to support the industry as well if possible, but if you choose not to buy official copies or merchandise, anime is still available to you, which I'm guessing contributes largely to the size of the fanbase.

That's only for information. Physical objects can also be free, but you have a higher chance of getting caught.

Depends on what you mean by free.

If you're a japanese teenager tuning into a japanese broadcasting channel at midnight then it's free for yourself. Your parents in that situation would be paying the cable after all.

If you are consuming it from streaming or torrenting, you need to realize that you aren't supporting the anime you love at all. If you feel in the slightest hint of guilt the least you can do is buy a crunchyroll premium account. Or Funimation i guess...

I'm serious.

It's one of the only legal ways to obtain anime outside of buying the DVDs which is iffy and limited anyway.

If you torrent, anime that crunchyroll doesn't pick up though, I wouldn't feel guilty. It's literally the only other way to consume said media after all.

To the Japanese otakus , anime aren't. ( 2 EPs of anime costs more than a full video game ! )

But to the king of pirates like me , everything is free. ( I choose to spend my money on the net bill rather than buying anime DVD/BDs )

There is something called "TV". I am not sure though how much is "receiver TV" and how much is "free TV" in Japan, but it could at most cost as much as the usual "receiver TV" stuff would cost.

So since most of us also pay for that stuff (and/or depending on age and current situation - our parents), in a sense it ACTUALLY IS free for the Japanese people. Well, of course there are the blu-ray releases, so yea, uncensored Ecchi does cost as much as 2 video games.

I cannot imagine how very few anime and manga I would have watched and read if it wasn't thanks to the fansub and scanlation communities.

I think you should support the industry if you really enjoyed a work, but I also understand if you cannot afford to.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

Anything is free when you pirate it, duh. There are legal options for some anime, but the free pirating option is always better. For me, it only costs one internet bill a month and the occasional HDD. So technically, not free.

Majority of anime we had seen in our lives is free only because it has been pirated. Reason for that is that most of the shows hasn't been officially released to the western markets and thus no one outside the Japan can watch it legally, especially not "for free". We wouldn't get our eyes and hands on it if it wasn't pirated. If you find English dubbed show and watch it on US (only) paid webpage, you are watching it legally, but not for free.

It's like those free-to-play games and many websites: you don't have to pay anything, but if you have spare money, they have stuff to offer you - DVDs, figures, dakimakura, whatever... Somehow, there are enough people with spare money in the world that anime keeps existing.
In this sense, anime itself is a really expensive advertisement.

They say that most of Studio Ghibli's money comes from selling plush Totoros, giving the creators enough freedom to make what they want to make.

The anime Blu-Rays that I bought was:
- Sword Art Online I and II (My friends are big fan of the series and they're jealous I bought 2 seasons.)
- Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (cost me a shit ton of money but worth it due to ufotable's animation)
- The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (Managed to grab one at Amazon for 80$)
- Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Rebellion (Big fan of the series so worth my money)
- A Certain Scientific Railgun and Railgun S (FUNimation's Blu-Ray are fucking cheap yo so worth my money)

Note:
-I'm planning to grab the Monogatari Series on Aniplex in a few months.
-I have a FUNimation subscription so most of the anime that I stream are legal. God, their website sucks but their dubs are great. It's the only reason why I haven't cancelled my subscription yet.
-I'm probably going to buy the 2nd Season of UBW. The pricing is just retarded.

I support the anime industry plus the companies who licenses them/dub them. I will only buy an anime if I love it. Streaming anime is more like a test ground for me.

Also, I will never EVER buy one of those merchandises in my life..

I pity people who has never supported the anime industry. Seriously, if the industry dies out, it's all your fault :/.

Some people can't genuenly support Anime/Manga industry.
I live in a country where there's no Anime DVDs/Manga Volumes whatsoever. I also can't use credit card & I also have many problems besides that. People don't give a damn about Anime in my country (A few actually cares).

Back to the main point, Mostly everything is free if you pirate. Games can be also downloaded for free.
