Which distro do you use, Working_Designs?

Right now, I'm using Linux Mint 13 with Xfce. I used Cinnamon for a while, but I wanted a change. When I first started using Linux, I used Ubuntu 10.04.

I've been using Windows since my first computer. But I may have to switch to Macbook in a couple months time, because I absolutely hate the Windows 8 system. Much prefer the Windows 7 system.

I have windows 8 but to be fair Win 7 is better if you have no other external products. Win 8 links with my Xbox and Windows phone easily (not saying 7 doesn't link but 8 is built to link up)...

Windows 8 was such a hassle to upgrade and configure to my personal requirements. A few months ago I would have said Windows 7 is better, but now that my PC is all set up and settled, I'm really liking Windows 8.

Though, in all fairness, a good deal of my configuration of Windows 8 was to make it operate and look... just like Windows 7. lol

I don't know what people are saying about "Windows 7 for gaming, Windows 8 for tablets". Windows 8 has slightly better performance than 7.

Start8 for Windows 8.1 lets you log in to the traditional desktop and adds the start menu back where it should be.

Anyways, anyone on here running TAILS?

I don't use Tails, but I do have some information on Tor.

The Inside Story of Tor, the Best Internet Anonymity Tool the Government Ever Built

"That’s ironic, because Tor started as a project of the U.S. government. More than half of the Tor Project’s revenue in 2012, or $1.24 million, came from government grants, including an $876,099 award from the Department of Defense, according to financial statements available on the project’s website."

"Paul Syverson at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington is one of the world’s foremost researchers on encrypting and routing data and one of Tor’s creators."

"For the onion router to work properly, the Navy needed to step back from running it. A cloaking system is not useful if all the cloaks say 'Navy' on them."

"Syverson and other researchers have written voluminously about Tor’s weaknesses. The network operates within the wider Web, and the way users behave and configure their computers outside Tor is one of the biggest sources of insecurity."

"One way the NSA found to get around Tor’s software and spy on users was an attack called 'EgotisticalGiraffe,' exploiting a vulnerability in the Firefox browser. Another approach was to try to reconstruct the encrypted path to find the identity of a Tor user by monitoring relays, according to the 'Tor Stinks' presentation."

"Tor exerts little control over who volunteers to host traffic, and researchers have found evidence of abuse, such as cases where an operator is snooping on traffic."

"In September a security researcher, Robert Graham of Errata Security, analyzed almost 23,000 connections to a relay he’d set up, and concluded that the majority were vulnerable to NSA decryption. Three-quarters of the traffic he monitored used an older version of Tor based on encryption keys that 'everyone seems to agree' the NSA can break, he wrote."

"Yet because of Snowden, we now know that the NSA has been working to unpeel the protective layers built by the Tor system."

"'With manual analysis we can de-anonymize a very small fraction of Tor users,' one slide reads."

"Tapping the line before it enters the Tor network can reveal the origin of the traffic"

"Tapping the line after it emerges from the Tor network can reveal the destination and the content"

you can't use anything else on the screen while using the start menu, so spending so much time getting it set up to work like 7 seems like a waste of time to me.

like, other than modern apps (which don't need to be used) and the start screen, everything else is pretty much exactly like windows 7.

I think you misunderstood me. I have an app called Start8, which allows Windows 8 to login to the traditional desktop by default and adds a start button on the taskbar. It really does work just like Windows 7 now.

I really liked Windows 7. I miss it. I miss the thing you had in the bottom left hand corner (don't know how it's called in english). It was handy. Oh, and turning your computer off was so much easier.
Also, I actually never ever use the possibilities in the home menu, so, there's no point for me in using Windows 8... Nevertheless, I have no choice but using it.

It's still easy:
* pressing power button
* alt+F4 on desktop => shutdown
* right click on start button on Windows 8.1 or Windows button + X => shutdown
* windows button + i => "on/off" (or how it's called in the English version) => shutdown
* shutdown /s /t 0 in a command prompt or in batch file
* using programs with a shutdown feature after they have done their work
* installing Classic shell or any other start menu tool

edit: in 8.1 with update 1 it's even possible to shut it down from the new start menu.

Windows 7 is better for everything. Its just a stylish version of XP that doesn't have the problems of Vista.
Windows 8 is not very user friendly in my opinion.

Surprisingly I've had fewer issues on Windows 8 with gaming than on Windows 7.

And that's saying something since I transplanted a bunch of emulator installs and game installs from my Win7 computer to my Win8 computer.

The only issue I've had with games is the touchpad; it has a lockout feature if a key is being pressed which makes playing FPS shooters a pain without a controller. There's a way to fix this I'm pretty sure but I already spent hours messing around with registry keys and can't seem to find the settings I need. But that's not on Windows8, it's on Samsung.

But Windows 8 seems to be good too. I'm not denying that.

I've got to add the following to my old list:
For Windows 8.1: http://xxinightxx.deviantart.com/art/Aero-8-1-Windows-8-1-413881040

alternatively: http://neiio.deviantart.com/art/Windows-7-on-Windows-8-1-477067334

For Windows 8(.0): http://xxinightxx.deviantart.com/art/Aero-8-Windows-8-350491112

and it looks even more like Windows 7 for those who also have Windows 8(.1), but want to keep both the old design and the new features.

I actually won't though. Why would I waste all my time changing operating systems for no benefit and potential detriment.

There are many operating systems that I've used, hated, and passed over in favour of my current operating system in the past. Who are these people who are just eventually using it anyway, other than those who don't know what an operating system is and think apple invented apps.

I'd say Windows 7 because of the start menu and run bar, but there's really a lot of unnecessary hate on Windows 8 (rhymes all the times)

I think the only reason it's such a big deal is because Win-8 is a slight downgrade instead of a significant upgrade. If I paid the money to upgrade an already existent computer to Windows 8, I'd be disappointed. However, getting a computer with Windows 8 preloaded isn't much different than Windows 7.

Windows 7, because that's what my computer was installed with.

When it comes to software, my policy is "don't fix it if it ain't broken." I've found that upgrades are terrible at least 50% of the time.

If I ever get a new computer after this one, I'll deal with it then.
