I recently installed Windows 8.1 and I really love it so far. Once you figure out the new Start menu with the apps and all that stuff you can't go back. Also I don't notice any perfomance issues. Runs smoothly just like Windows 7.

But doesn't Windows 8.1 have a brightness issues? I mean, you just can't seem to adjust the brightness.

Windows 8.1 is great.

You go to taskbar and enable boot to desktop.
You download something to get back the normal start button(i use ClassicShell simple)

Then windows 8.1 is basically windows 7 except faster for more things.

I'm went from Windows XP to 8.1, i used 7 at school computers
XP boot time 8yr computer: 10 minutes
7 boot time schook computer 1-3 minutes
8.1 boot time new laptop: 5 seconds

But personally i found less options for customizing appearance on Windows 8 than windows 7.
Maybe because Windows 8 is designed to be used for tablets and phones so less appearance options to optimize battery life.

I don't have any issues with my brightness. And I think you can change it just like in Windows 7.

Great until you find out about the dns issues 8.1 is famous for. For dummies, that means your pc will often say that you have limited to no connectivity to ur wifi connection. Of course that can be fixed from time to time with some netsh commands (especially that resetlog.txt command) and flushing the dns cache using the command prompt.

I like windows 7 the best.its easier to navigate.Windows 8 is a pain in the ass to navigate through and seems to have more unnecessary crap in it.When I click on photos I want to see my photos, when I click on videos I want to see my videos not xbox videos or some other nonsense.I do not want to see apps and other crap..I hate the fact they call applications in windows 8 "apps" It's like when ignorant people say "my baby daddy" instead of "the father of my child".In all the other versions of windows when you click on all programs in the start tab it lists the programs in a condensed version. In Windows 8 its like spread out including the subprograms in the program. For example if you had Nero instead of it listing Nero and you clicking on Nero to see whats in it, it would list every nero program. Windows 8 looks like it was designed more for a mobile device instead of an actual computer.

I had no issues with wifi connectivity.

I am a dummy but i always flush DNS cache every month as it seems to make my internet faster. I have no idea if thats why i have no issues or not or if its bad for my laptop.

I also use a wifi adapter not the thing inside my laptop. Not sure if that would fix it.

And my laptop was custom built by Toshiba, online they let you choose what parts you want and then spend 3-5 weeks making it work and then ship it. I order a $1400 laptop for 50% off on cyber-Monday and it took 2 months to ship but i had no issues at all with it.

My cousin got a lenovo laptop, no problems with wifi connection.

My friend and I saw how bad the wifi/network card(idk whats its called) in Lenovo laptops which you can't change.

So my friend got a dell laptop, and no problems with wifi connection too.

Both are good. While Windows 7 has the better visual style, Windows 8(.1) has the better improvements on a technical level like an improved copy dialog, a better Task-Manager, more than 16GB RAM for non Pro and some security enhancements.

It's better to test a system for yourself before rating it down:
Windows 8.1: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/hh699156.aspx
(however, you need to re-install and a normal Pro/non Pro key won't work)

Windows 7: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/trying-to-upgrade-windows-xp-to-windows-7-but-it/e35f39f6-110a-4a1e-84e2-37f0eb57663c
(links are in the answer. You can just activate your key with the corresponding version you've installed.)

If you're trying out Windows 8.1, you might want to try out these things:
- Aero Glass for Windows 8(.1): http://www.glass8.eu/
brings back transparency in window frames

- OldNewExplorer: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/170375-oldnewexplorer-make-your-81-explorer-work-like-win78-one/
in case you don't like the new Explorer view

- Classic Shell: http://www.classicshell.net/
to get the old Start menu back in case you don't like the new full screen one. You can change the button if you don't like the default one: http://www.classicshell.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=853

- Rainmeter and/or 8Gadgetpack for optional customizations

one more thing: if you don't want to create a Microsoft account during installation, simply let the network cable plugged out.

Windows 7 simply because I don't need all that start screen stuff or whatever new and minor features Windows 8 has. I don't see a point in downloading third party programs to make 8 look like 7 when I can just use 7 lol

Those are optional to make Windows 8(.1) look less ugly and/or more familiar. Also, there is no reason to use Windows 8(.1) if you already have Windows 7 and are content with it.

Neither because Linux master race. But between the two, windows 8.1, specially because of the (incoming) dx12, also better visual and better perfomance and speed in some areas, my only problem with windows 8 is terrible backward compatibility with super old dx games.

As it stands: 8 < 7 < 8.1

8 was pretty much a fail. 8.1 solved many problems. 8.2 will presumably solve more...

For the XP people, I have never had one, and the only ones I get on today are public and hopelessly slow, so I can't really compare.

It depends entirely on what you're gonna be doing and if you're willing to learn how to properly use Linux. If you're into gaming on your computer you'll want Windows. Overall besides gaming Linux is by far superior, security and customization alone was the main reason I switched to Linux. You should dual-boot Windows and Linux and see which one you prefer.

tl;dr: i think windows 8.1 is superior to windows 7. it is fast, lightweight, and stable. startup and shutdown time are within a few seconds. it is a beast of an operating system.

I switched to Linux nearly 4 years ago, and I love it. I have old racing wheels, webcams, printers & scanners, some of which are nearly 15 years old and would never work in modern windows, but they all work on Linux as soon as you plug them in.

Linux is so fast, and so light on resources, and you don't need an antivirus, because it's nearly impossible to get viruses with Linux.

I'll never use windows again.
