Probably more men, but women aren't a tiny minority. I'd say 70/30 with the difference steadily decreasing. People underestimate the amount of women that stay mostly in female-dominated anime communities, even while discussing shounen and seinen anime. And there's also a lot of women that aren't noticed in general online comunities because they either hide their gender or people just assume they are men.
@Sen1793 lol no. Gamefaqs was almost entirely men. Anonymous polls had it 90+ percentile men back in the day. With like 50000 voters lol. |

Your question can be answered by computing the ratio of male:female demographic entries.
Male = 3200 (82.6%)
Female = 674 (17.4%)
M:F = 4.75:1
Male = 3200 (82.6%)
Female = 674 (17.4%)
M:F = 4.75:1
@Zarutaku that's an irrelevant statistic. shoujo and josei are inherently less diverse in their genres, so there are just fewer works. not to mention that there is plenty of anime that has no listed demographics since it only applies to anime based on manga. besides, according to Jump's own statistics, 40% of WSJ readers are female. there are probably more girls reading WSJ than some of the more popular Shoujo magazine. |

Not sure about English-speaking fans of anime, especially since it's only somewhat recently that female fans started to be more visible via social media. But, for Japanese fans, who had longer-lasting female-dominant fandoms since Gundam in the 70s onwards, the results are slightly leaning male, but pretty close to 50/50. According to this survey done last year, manga slightly leans male with 52-53%, while anime is more visibly male with 61-62%. Women are far more visible in male idols/music and sanrio, while men are far more visible in cute girl shows, isekai, and vtubers. So taking that into account, along with the notion that English-speaking female fans are a recent phenomena, it's very likely that we English speakers lean even further male-dominant, even outside of MAL. |

Anime has a 70%-80% male fanbase while the 20%-30% female fanbase are predominant for the most part in male idol, shoujo, BL, reverse harem and series with bishounen male cast. Since they lack a predominant male fanbase [at most gay and bi male Anime fans are into such series but we also has very similar taste to other male Anime fans], such genres are not popular among the Anime community. Also like they say above, women are more interesed in real life than men. That's why its more common for most men to be introduced into escapist stuff early like games and Anime unlike most women. |

There are probably more male fans than female fans, but it's not by too much. It's probably around a 60/40 ratio. It may even be more towards women on ecchi stuff, especially with the extreme things like Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi. More women than men watched it while it was airing.
Every single anime puritan I've met in real life has been a straight white man. I've never met women in real life who are opposed to fanservice.

Because we really don't care that much about basic fanservice. Too much fanservice is cringe, but I'd just avoid it in that case. 🤷♀️ It reminds me of when I was in a discord about Paladins. Most of the people complaining were straight men. Men angry at gay guys with shirtless skins or girls that were "gooner bait". Meanwhile, most girls were just like "Carnival Ying! 😍" I don't know if men actually hate those skins or fanservice. From what I know, I think they view it as a "bad look" for the respective IP. They think it's embarrassing to have a gooner fanbase, so they don't want content tnat attracts gooners. |

@krautnelson And also, some Shoujo and Josei series have high sales. Shoujo/Josei with over 1 million copies per volume: - Sailor Moon - Glass Mask - Boys Over Flowers - Nana - Nodame Cantible - Kimi ni Todoke - Fruits Basket - Itazura na Kiss - Tokimeki Tonight - Rose of Versailles - Don't Call it Mystery - Chibi Maruko-chan - The Tale of Genji - Candy Candy All of those sold over 10 million copies, and have over 1 million sold per volume. And we know that men don't really buy or watch Shoujo and Josei. So someone has to be watching and buying them. |

In Similarweb analytics, among large websites there is surprisingly little deviation. It is around 65-70% male to 30-35% female. With MAL being the lower end of 30%. I also checked Anilist, Animeplanet, and Crunchyroll, which had slightly higher proportion of women, likely because they are more recent sites and older accounts skew more male than newer accounts. |

Overall I think it's about pretty close to even, with a lean toward men. The ratio changes up depending on which show's fandom, and which corner of the fandom you look though. Anecdotally: I mostly hung out in the creative (fanfic, Fanart, Cosplay, Roleplay) or shipping circles traditionally, so most fans I've been around were women. While here on MAL, I def notice this place is a sausage fest. IRL at cons, It feels about 50/50, BUT I notice a majority of the Panels I attend, and Artist alley booths in general, are lead by a lot more women or nonbinary folks then men. |

I've played several games with a form of chat: Final Fantasy 14, Friday the 13th, Paladins, Smite, and Fortnite. I've met other girls on those games. My brother played Overwatch and he's met a lot of girls. The girls that we were friends with played games.

As for why male creativity, is dropping IDK, maybe you can correlate it to men checking out on life or society, that seems to be plaguing some young men, though it is also affecting women too. Anyway I expect anime to lean more to men, I wouldn't be shocked if manga is more equal though. EcchiGodMamster said: Meh speak for yourself. Some of the biggest anime fans I knew in HS were women. I knew another girl who basically was a League of Legends addict, coming into class sleep deprived cause she was gaming all night. You go into certain genres like life simulators or farming games, and it's pretty much all women. Gaming genres can be sex segregated, I know that for sure; however, women game just as much as men today. Which is why many guys find it "weird" if a girl does certain things, I mean if its really just women hiding it for whatever reason we'll then you're just keeping it that way by hiding it Most girls I have known watch anime, play games in some regard. I am not really that surprised. Maybe back in the late 2000s/early 2010s when I was a kid (even then I got pretty exposed early to the Fujo communities), though this stuff is all mainstream now. Even on the addict scale, which probably is more male, due to a variety of reasons, I think if include mobile games, it still actually isn't a major division between sexes. |

Nah, some guys would be weird regardless... Also, if you reveal yourself to not be creepy, girls are more open to speaking on games. I've played several games with a form of chat: Final Fantasy 14, Friday the 13th, Paladins, Smite, and Fortnite. I've met other girls on those games. My brother played Overwatch and he's met a lot of girls. The girls that we were friends with played games. I've seen a lot of girls play games such as: Sims, Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, Infinity Nikki, Borderlands, Valorant, Overwatch, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Minecraft, Genshin Impact, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Zelda, Pokemon, Persona, Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft, Dota, Life is Strange, Elder Scrolls, The Witcher 3, etc. A lot of girls play on PC or Nintendo consoles from my experience.

Imma be honest, if you rarely run into girls that game or watch anime, then they're specifically hiding it from you. I've seen a lot of girls who game and watch anime. In real life and online.

In real life and online. ok, hold on for a second i NEVER said i thought ANY of this i was responding to when you implied the reason why it seems like theres less women is because "women are hiding it due to guys being weird about it" and i gave a solution to that problem nothing more nothing less i also NEVER said i rarely run into girls that watch anime or play games, wtf? in what universe? i probably run into just as many girls as i do guys that watch anime (i dont know as much about manga since i don't read much so i don't ask), its about HOW MUCH they watch and how much they prioritize other things over anime/manga/gaming in comparison to guys for me that matters the most BilboBaggins365 said: Meh speak for yourself. There's more male fans for sure, but female fans are not a minority at all. [but I guess I'm saying that from a female perspective, as I exist in fandom spaces that are purely flooded by women like fanfiction, fanarts, hot anime guy edits - and a lot of my friends also watched anime [but no one to the degree that I did]] |
