The title says it all. Do you think Harry Potter is overrated?

I'm a big Harry Potter fan myself but I think it's a bit overrated. It took me a while to realize this.

Since the series of books and movies have ended years ago, I'm gonna say no because the hype has gone down and I'd say that it's a good series. Not my favorite, but I like it.

It's not one of my favorite things personally but I do understand the appeal and it captures its target audience very well. Unfortunately, I am not really part of the target audience of Harry Potter but I do praise it for its qualities and I think it is excellently written. But Twilight is a whole different level.

I dont think its overrated. Its a beautiful story that takes place in a world full of fantasy and wonders. Its not that harry potter is overrated, a lot if other stuff is underrated.

i rarely ever hear anyone talk about them, i lost interest in them over tiem but they were pretty darn creative and the movie adaptions usually did the books justice, id say they were pretty deserving of praise

I think Harry Potter is a good series of movies and books overall, but not as good as the fandom makes it out to be I suppose. It's overrated, but not nearly as undeservedly overrated as some other works. It at least lives up to some of its hype, so I'm not really bothered by people taking a liking to it.

I thought it took way too long for the movies to catch up to the quality of the books though. And just when I thought Deathly Hallows was going to be a cynical cash grab for being extended into two parts, instead it turned out to be the most faithful and best adaptation yet. Maybe the other movies should have received the same treatment.

I only liked the first movie because I watched it while I was a kid, so it was fresh. I enjoyed the fourth one the most. The fifth one being the weakest. Overall I didn't really love the franchise that much, and the magic kinda bored me sometimes. The story line wasn't engaging enough to me.

Yes, it was an ok book series when i read it as a kid, it was an ok film series towards the end but all in all its just a story that basically takes bits and bats of better stories and smooshes them together with wands.

I mean talking spiders in an creepy forest, Tolkien called, he wants his plot back.

The movies were mediocre. Definitely overrated from all the hype on the books. The books on the other hand deserve the praise and recognition.

The movies are bad, but the books are fine. It was hugeee for the fantasy genre so I have no problems with that. I read all of them, just not the biggest fan like others.

After the second movie, I got really disinterested in the series. But the sixth movie was great. The only HP movies I care for are the 1st, 2nd, and 6th one. The series is definitely is overhyped.

I still haven't watched the last movie.

I started losing interest when they stopped showing us what they do in school (the most fun part about this series)

so around the 3rd or 4rd everything went downhill for me and I stopped caring.

I just stick to the books.

I remember when the first 2 harry potter movies were happy and cheerful (with something bad happening at the end but gets happy again), but 3 onwards it all went dark.

Although the movies were still good, the books were better.

I'd put the books on a level with Panem. Good, no doubt, but not superior.
Lord of the Rings is superior.

Didn't they get another actor to play Gandalf as well? Because the previous one died or something?

I don't give a fuck if a lot of people like something more than I do.
If I think it's good then it's good, if I think it's bad then it's bad.
Calling something "Overrated", would imply that the fandom actually has some pull over my opinion and it doesn't.

Hell no. It's an amazing series. In fact the best series, to me at least. I can re-read it 10 times and it'll never get old. It's a beautiful series, with funny characters, cute romance, epic action. So no, it's not overrated. The movies were good in the beginning and they actually chose actors at the right age for the movies, unlike some others were they're supposed to be 12, but the actors are 20. -.- The actors suited the characters as well themselves. Also they did a pretty good job. But overall Harry Potter deserves every bit of it's popularity.

The movies or the books?

The Movies were overrated, although I still enjoyed them.

The books were absolutely correctly rated and deserved all the hype and critical acclaim it got.

Wonderful books that are very hard to put down.

Probably some of the most fun books I have ever read.

i don't even think of the movies are overrated - most people were excited to see them, including me, but i don't think they received much over/under praise simply b/c they were.... harry potter!

I grew up with Harry Potter, I'm sure many can relate.

I love the series, the books were amazing, the movies great too.
I still re-read the books in 2 languages (Dutch(native) and English) nowadays.
I'm planning on getting a Harry Potter tattoo as well; pretty much the Deathly Hallows symbol on my elbow, not just as a sign of my love towards the series and Rowling as a writer, but also symbolizing the struggle during the time I was suicidal.

Read the books back in elementary school and are what got me into reading. The movies are poor adaptations and I do believe they are overrated. The books are well rated not the best thing in the world but fine books for kids that just getting in to bigger books.

I think it's a little overrated, especially regarding the movies. The books are good, but since the 5th volume it started to get disappointing. Some HBP parts are an exception, though.

My brother reading me Harry Potter before I go to sleep is part of my sweetest childhood memories . If I had childrens around 8/9 or so I would definetly read it to them , but that's about it .
