Honestly, I have difficulties with the rating because I had a rocky middle going through this series when I began to grow somewhat tired of the near-Looney Toons like antics within the series. Although some of it was gut-bustingly funny, some of it was painful in an otherwise great bag of variety.

Despite the fact that I would give this a 7/10 throughout the beginning and halfway through the middle, I think it would be criminal to not acknowledge how the story ended. It had a near-perfect resolution and overall, the finale was very very enjoyable.

Very surprising ending that revised how I ultimately look at the development of characters and the intention of characters made as viewed by the artist.

If I could, I would like to say that I would rate episode 19 a 10/10 alone. Everything else feels very unfocused for several reasons. Characters motivations can change from episode to episode with little to no explination or in-depth reason. The whole thing, overall, feels very vapid when so many characters are simply motivated by love and the lack of subtlety is just absurd. I feel like symbols and images are tossed around like confetti to the point where they become annoying and insult the audience's intelligence. Overall, throughout the majority of the series, I felt very uninterested.

I feel the need to back track to episode 19 as a write these comments out because that episode alone shows great competency in establishing character motivation, the reason behind certain emotions and reactions and the thoughtful attention to this resulted in me being emotionally invested in the resolution of the episode. The primary characters (Ayato and Asahina) feel like their motivations and personalities are concrete enough to remain believable throughout the episode while the material is malleable enough to form the beautiful shapes that was the relationship they developed over the course of that stand-alone story. I just feel that it greatly contrasts with every other episode because I constantly find myself yelling at the screen and at the characters for acting contrarily to what was already established in their characters previously. Nothing ever felt consistent with any other character and, as I am watching, it continues to make me very angry.

The only two elements that kept me watching was the fact that I was in the dark about what Mishima was in concept (she could have been a number of things in my head and I wanted to get to the end of the series to find out) and the overall design of the Dolems along with their singing voices. I have always had a fascination with sound in science fiction and I liked how they played around with it but I did not necessarily enjoy how it was played around with. It seems that they just meaninglessly spout terms like "aria" just to make it sound cool rather than giving the actions any other meaning.

Oh yeah. I personally really like the soundtrack as a whole.

I literally finished this series in one day even with all of the work I have. And it was honestly worth it. Painstaking effort went into recreating the atmosphere of post WWII Japan and the carefully written narrative is honestly something that needs to be seen to be believed.

I don't have very high expectations for this...
