Synopsis

Grotesque, Godzilla-like monsters called "kaijuu" have been appearing around Japan for many years. To combat these beasts, an elite military unit known as the Defense Corps risks their lives daily to protect civilians. Once a creature is killed, "sweepers"—working under the Professional Kaijuu Cleaner Corporation—are left to dispose of its remains.

Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man, is unsatisfied with his job as a sweeper. From a young age, he has aspired to join the Defense Corps and kill kaijuus for a living. After a few failed attempts, however, he gave up on his dreams and resigned himself to the mediocrity that provided a decent paycheck. Nevertheless, when an ambitious, 18-year-old recruit named Leno Ichikawa joins his cleaning team, Kafka is once again reminded of his desire to join the military.

Following a chain of unfortunate events and an interaction with the junior sweeper, Kafka encounters a parasite-type kaijuu that forces its way in through his mouth—turning him into a humanoid monster. With his newfound powers, Kafka aims to give his lifelong dream a final try.

Preliminary (3/12 eps)

Kaiju no. 8 was by far the most anticipated new anime of Spring 2024. So, did it live up to the hype? After having watched the first 3 eps, I'd say: Yeah, it did.

The first 3 episodes of Kaiju no. 8 haven't blown me out of the water, but they certainly have not disappointed me. So for that reason alone, I think this show deserves your attention.

Here's the premise: Japan has the highest amount of Kaiju appear in the world. The Kaiju neutralization force has been tasked with the objective of eliminating all the kaiju. Our MC, Kafka Hibino is a cleanup man, having to ... do all the dirty work after all of the flashy action is over. He's always dreamed of joining the force, and now just when he gets an opportunity to do so, he ends up turning into a Kaiju himself!

The premise and motivations are fairly standard for a battle shonen. Our MC wants to reunite with his childhood friend and look good in front of her. Even so, I believe the execution is there, and that's what matters.

Animation: The animation is very solid and clean on this show. Production IG are a great studio, they've personally done some of my favorite anime in Psycho Pass season 1 as well as the more recent Heavenly Delusion, which just released last year (and also had excellent animation). As soon as I saw Production IG's name attached to this project, I knew the animation was going to be handled well. Additionally, the fight scenes in the show are quite smooth. The Kaiju are fully 2D, which makes for an enjoyable viewing experience.

Overall score: 8/10

Characters: I enjoy the cast of Kaiju no. 8 a lot. Kafka Hibino isn't your typical shonen protagonist, as he's in his 30's (so oldies will be able to relate to him easier), and I appreciate that they went that route as it's unique in that regard. Ichikawa is enjoyable to watch and Kikoru, while not my favorite right now, has a lot of potential moving forward and it looks like they are setting up for devlopment beyond just your "typical tsundere". I also like Mina and she appears cold on the outside but actually deeply cares for Kafka on the inside.

Overall score: 8/10

Sound: The sound in this anime is honestly excellent. The sound effects in the fight scenes are on point and visceral, you feel every blow, every attack, every gunshot. Additionally, the top notch voice acting really elevates one's viewing experience. Kafka and Ichikawa's VA's don't appear to have too many high profile roles, but they have been doing a great job so far, and Kikoru and Mina are voiced by Fariouz Ai and Asami Seto respectively, which are 2 extremely talented VA's. I think the sound is probably the strongest aspect of the show.

OP and ED: Definitely the weakest part of the show, but to many, it's the least important. I knew this subject would be controversial the second they announced that western artists would be performing the intro and outro theme of Kaiju no. 8. "Oh no, how dare the westerners touch my precious Japanese animation." was a lot of people's gut reaction. However, after having sat down and listened to the op and ed of kaiju numerious times, I actually like them both. The op is quite serious, giving a vibe of "impending doom". Tho I will say the CGI in it is wack, idk what they were on while making those visuals. As for the ed, its very upbeat and happy go lucky. It doesn't perfectly fit the vibe of Kaiju no. 8, but that doesn't matter, because it's still a good song regardless. The visuals, while simple, go well with the song and are unique for an ed.

All in all, I think Kaiju no. 8 is a very entertaining show that appeals to a wide audience. I feel like it's going to be the "dumb battle shonen with good production values" of the season. If you're looking for the most intricate and complex of storylines, Kaiju no. 8 may not be for you. If you want to have a fun time watching some killer Kaiju action, then Kaiju no. 8 is definitely for you.

Man, after so much promise in the beginning the growing number of red flags is becoming concerning for me. Hopefully things turn around going forward because I really enjoyed the premise that was set up initially. Unfortunately, reading the reviews for the manga has left me feeling uneasy for what is yet to come.

The biggest red flag for me is Kafka potentially devolving into a stereotypical middle school male shounen MC with all of his yelling. Part of my interest in his character was seeing a middle aged guy get a 2nd chance at his dream after giving up. If he continues acting too ... much like a child going forward I might not make it through to the end of the season. Children acting like children can get old fast, but having someone that old acting like that is going to get old REALLY fast. He should act more mature than the younger characters, not less so.

I'm also getting more concerned about the world building. Especially that the need for these super soldiers to take out Kaiju won't be adequately explained. Why can't conventional weapons be used against Kaiju more often while being augmented by Kaiju parts? It's still early so an explanation can be coming later, but unless these Kaiju are appearing by magic, or possibly underground, the larger ones should be detected much earlier to prevent them from causing devastation to cities. The only reason these soldiers would be necessary for urban landscapes is to enter areas not easily accessible to helicopters, planes, tanks, etc. that smaller Kaiju infiltrate into. Large Kaiju coming from the sea are easily detectable by sonar and should be intercepted long before they enter a city, same for air based Kaiju via radar. The first Kaiju in episode one literally appeared from a waterway and it was the size of a multistory building. Not exactly undetectable!

Did I mention there is a large domesticated tiger that attacks a Kaiju as big as a house in episode 1? I was hoping it was some kind of domesticated Kaiju they kept locked away, but nope, it just lives in the apartment of the female love interest. Yeah...

Anyways, there is still time for these things to receive an adequate explanation. It is just concerning that the number of questions without answers are rising so fast while the number of questions answered thus far is comparatively low.

Let's do a few positives quickly.

Kafka was mostly good thus far except for the recent aforementioned immature yelling. Ichikawa Reno has been a likable friend thus far. As expected, Production I.G is delivering on the audiovisual aspects of the show. Everything else is mostly still too early to tell right now, so it's not like it's all bad by any stretch. I'm just feeling much more mixed about the series after the 3rd episode compared to the first 2 episodes.

This series is not about Kaijus, seriously, if you are a kaiju fan, turn around, this is My Hero Academy with 2000's shounen paint.

0 characterization, Kafka is your cringe shouty shounen protagonist whose age is only relevant to make jokes about, otherwise he's a manchild that acts exatly like Asta, Midoriya, etc... I hit 30 recently and low key fell offended lmfao; Sidekick is... Just the sidekick, there's also Bakugo with pink hair, the snobby blonde rich girl, the cold strong dude that doesn't talk much, confident chill guy, childhood friend love interest that's mc's goal to defeat and has the personality of a wet ... tissue, no scratch that, it has the personality of an honest politician, it doesn't exist.

0 stakes, in the first 3 minutes we learn that kaijus are not a threat but barely a nuisance, they only cause destruction while the extermination teams get there, so there's absolutely no point for this story to even take place, mc won't be a paradigm shift or affect anything, heck the closed down an entire district and put kaiju in it to have the superpowered 16 year olds try their powers on them, Hero Exam much?

0 humor, no, shouting and goofing around all the time isn't humor, but if you enjoy the forced goofing all the time and scripted Marvel humor then good for you, or I'm sorry I guess.

0 logic, the kaijus explode and blow up when being shot with 1 bullet, ok??? MC can outrun a 6 legged kaiju, but then can't keep up jogging vs other people, but then can go around running in a battlefield??? Sidekick can lift and swing a stop sign (they weight around 80 lbs btw) and take down a kaiju with a blow, and also deflect a swing from it??? MC also gets his power by eating the hair of the #1 kaiju in the world, sorry, a random fly goes inside his mouth, he transforms and sidekick is just ok with it??? 3 months pass and they don't ever get to question what happened, what's going on, dig deeper into the mystery, nope, MC gets powers and that's it, continue as normal??? Kaijus never threaten anyone, they're just there to open their mouths for a few minutes to somehow try to make you think that they are indeed dangerous and do nothing else, they don't have unique behaviors or opportunities, chase, get to target, open mouth, get killed.

The production quality is pretty good though, art and animation is amazing, OP is unique and good and the music is ok-goodish, doesn't stand out but gets the job done.

This series is only remotely popular because CR is pushing it real hard, if you are the pointing in shock wojak who gets exited because another battle shounen dropped and somehow think it's the best thing ever because "the fights" and don't care about anything else, then you will enjoy it, I'm not one to judge, I have a shit ton of generic isekai under my belt, you can stop browsing through my list trying to find some reason to discredit me, but as a general kaiju and monster enjoyer, this ain't it, I unironically think that if it were a series about Kaiju cleanup, it'd be up there with Dungeon Meshi because that was the only time I felt like there was a thought out world when explaining the characteristics of each kaiju's anatomy and how to deal with it during the cleanup.
