Synopsis

"U" is a popular social media platform where people can create a virtual persona and start a new life. Among its five billion users, one newcomer is quickly gaining attention: Belle, a beautiful singer whose alluring melodies slowly capture the hearts of the masses. But in this space where everyone hides behind an avatar, curiosity arises over who the mysterious girl truly is.

Suzu Naito—a shy girl from the countryside—can no longer sing following past trauma, all her efforts resulting in breakdowns and illness. However, when Suzu joins U, she is once again able to project her voice. Under the alias "Belle," her vocals soon go viral, receiving both love and hatred. Meanwhile, rumors spread of a chaotic beast within U, known only as "The Dragon." After a chance meeting during her concert, Belle finds he is not as evil as the stories suggest. Now, both online and in the real world, Suzu has to face the struggles of identity, fame, and opening one's heart.

Background

Inspired by the 1756 French fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on July 15, 2021 and was received with a standing ovation of 14 minutes. It was the third highest-grossing movie at the Japanese box office in 2021, earning 6.53 billion yen as of December 12, 2021.

Belle was drawn by Jin Kim, the character designer of popular Disney productions such as Tangled and Frozen.

Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime had five nominations at the 49th Annie Awards, including one for Best Independent Animated Feature, making it the Japanese anime film with the most nominations ever received in the history of these awards. A novel adaptation was issued by Kadokawa Bunko on June 12, 2021.

Watched this way back then but just wanted to share a review regarding this anime/movie. Personal rating on this one is slightly higher than how it's supposed to be and the main reason is the music. Plot-wise is pretty debatable but the music is just masterpiece.

Going back to the plot, I actually like the modern twist one and I initially anticipated for it to be like the classic "Beauty and the Beast" movie but besides the characters and the chase after the misunderstood beast. it's still a lot different from what was anticipated. Mixed Feelings

The movie was great, from style to suspension. But, it was quite hard to follow at times, and it was jumping all over the place - so it is not really for everyone.
Maybe as a lazy watch this is fine.
The songs are beautiful, and I would suppose the movie has a proper meaning and message, and the art style is fitting for the story. Beautiful choice of colors!

The main character(s) of the story had a well put-together background and development and you could see a bond forming overtime in "U".
I would not say they reacted in a fully realistic way, but what happened ...

Sometimes I wish I was a kid, enjoy endless shiny surprises and never think to ask, how these things are even put together. Just enjoyment is sometimes beneficial to us, however people like me can't really get the kid side of themselves to work again, then enjoying stories like this, is going to be very hard.

When the movie played I took my phone, lay on the couch and started checking my socials till the anime begins. It did not take more than 5 minutes for Belle to captivate me in such way that I put my phone aside, grabbed my glasses and sat up right ...
