Made in Abyss Movie 3: Fukaki Tamashii no Reimei

After bonding over a tragic loss, the long-suffering Nanachi joins Riko and Reg on their journey into the depths of the Abyss. Awaiting the children is the Sea of Corpses—the Abyss's fifth layer, and the deepest level from which a traveler can return without losing their human form.

The masked sadist Bondrewd stands between the children and the rest of their adventure. Bondrewd's horrific laboratory serves as a final checkpoint for those wishing to traverse deeper into the Abyss, and the sociopathic scientist has no desire to allow Riko's party to pass through at no cost. Deeply scarred by Bondrewd's impact on their childhood, Nanachi is engulfed in turmoil over his resurgence in their life.

Bondrewd's only apparent weakness is Prushka, a brash child who claims to be his daughter. Riko, Reg, and Nanachi befriend Prushka and work with the girl to overcome her father's machinations and breach the Abyss's sixth layer.

Peak storytelling with peak character growth. This story hits you in a place many men avoid saying out loud. You follow a man who fills the hole in his heart by raising a daughter in a world that crushes everyone. You watch him step into a role that feels like a cure for male loneliness, the kind that turns him into a single father figure who protects without fear. She loves him. He loves her. Their bond drives the whole arc forward.

The Abyss shows no mercy. The danger forces them to act with purpose. Every scene pushes their relationship deeper. You see trust. You see ... sacrifice. You see a connection that grows stronger under pressure.

This is where Made in Abyss hits the highest point for me. The events in Idofront raise the story above most series. The direction is sharp. The pacing never slows. Each moment adds weight to their bond.

Bondrewd ties everything together. He hurts others without hate. He pursues knowledge with focus. His daughter stands at the center of his purpose. You feel the strength of a father figure who goes past normal limits. You see love twisted by obsession, but still love.

The trio, Riko, Reg, and Nanachi, grow in a way that supports this theme. Each step they take shows maturity, pain, and resolve. Every choice feels earned.

This arc delivers emotional power without dragging scenes. The world, music, and character writing align with precision.

For me, this is peak media. A story about bonds born in hardship. A story about a father figure and a daughter who walk through horror and still hold on to each other. This is the part of Made in Abyss that stays in your memory. Best father role model, Bondrewd :)

Mixed Feelings

Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul is where things start to go south, the story is paced oddly, some important things are left unexplained, the mysterious allure of the abyss is not as interesting as in the beginning, weak world-building, some character decisions are stressing and questionable, and the end is unsatisfying. I believe this could be fixed by making this movie longer format to explain and pace things better while also shortening some of the unnecessarily extended scenes.

Most importantly, while in the first season the sexualization of characters could be brushed off as the culture being odd and our characters being innocent, ... here we can start to notice a heavier push towards sexualizing children, and it is only going to get much worse in the following season.

I liked the story but WOW some scenes were quite uncomfortable or incredibly disturbing. Felt like I was watching something illegal at points. Yes it was that bad. I'm so conflicted too, it was such a good story but HOLY COW bro I feel a little traumatized. For context, it was way worse than some of the other scenes in the first season. And for that reason I can't really recommend it to anyone in good faith but I know some people will appreciate the undelying story. There really isn't much else to say without getting into spoilers but, you'll like it if you want ... to continue the grim story of the anime but if the first season already has you reconsidering this show this movie is your answer. Don't watch it.
