The Story is also about Romance and Music and first love too.
Old shoujo anime of the slice of life/romance/music genre and overall very similar for mood and style.
Also, in both there are love triangles and guys with colourful, fuzzy, epic hair.

Both are great, classic 80's anime with well-developed characters and romance.
In both you'll find the ever-present love triangle and a slice of life mood.
Also, in both series one of the main characters, which is also the most interesting of them all (Madoka in Orange Road, Mao in Hikari) is into music, and is in love with the protagonist.
The main difference is that Hikari is about rhythmic gymnastics, and Orange Road is about Kyosuke's powers.
